2012 Land Rover Range EvoqueBy Mike BlakeCarliSlE EvEnTS

A major player in the luxury sports-utility niche is Land Rov-er, the second oldest four-wheel-drive car brand in the world, be-hind only Jeep. First launched by the Rover Co. in 1948, Land Rover has earned a 64-year reputation for delivering tough, durable, go-anywhere, 4-wheel-drive utility vehicles without sparing comfort or tech. Now owned by Tata Mo-tors of India, Land Rover contin-ues to produce safe, sturdy, high-tech and high-ticket off-roaders.

That tradition takes another step with the all-new 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, as-sembled in Halewood, U.K. The name Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is a mouthful, but the par-ent, Land Rover, is marketing the Range Rover line as a hip, fashion-able road-toy badge, keeping its more conservative vehicles for the Land Rover line.

Smallest land RoverA compact crossover (nothing is

a mere sports utility vehicle any-more), Range Rover Evoque is the smallest vehicle Land Rover has ever built, and it is the company’s first two-door model – a base four-door version is also available. Some 16 inches-plus shorter than the Range Rover Sport, Evoque is also the lightest and most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever pro-duced, at 3680 lbs. with an EPA rating of 18mpg in city driving and 28 on the highway.

Evoque measures 171.5 inch-es long, 77.4 inches wide and 64.4 inches high on a 104.8-inch wheelbase with a minimum ground clearance of 8.5 inches. Engineers say that it can success-fully attack 19 inches of ground or stream water.

Classic StylingExterior design cues feature

new interpretations of the classic Range Rover personality, includ-ing the signature clamshell bon-net, the floating roof and the solid wheel-at-each-corner stance. New for the brand, Evoque adopts a dynamic profile with its rising beltline, a muscular shoulder run-ning the length of the car, and a distinctive taper to the floating roofline. The sculpted corners re-duce the car’s visual overhangs front and rear and ultra-high-

strength boron steel in the A- and B-pillars retain the slim profile without compromising strength or safety.

Exterior enhancements include back-up camera, power windows, panoramic roof, sunroof with sunshield, rear spoiler, fog lamps, auto-off headlights, rear parking aid, power liftgate, intermittent rain-sensing wipers and heated mirrors.

intelligent Drive SystemThe lightweight Evoque utilizes

an innovative full-time intelli-gent all-wheel drive system which continuously varies the front/rear torque split using an electroni-cally controlled Haldex center coupling to deliver optimum grip and balance for the current driv-ing conditions. The transverse, front-engine, all-wheel drive SUV is powered by a turbocharged di-rect-injected 2.0-liter inline 4 en-gine that puts out 240 horsepow-er and 250 pound-feet of torque. Mated with a six-speed automatic transmission, the system delivers an agile and responsive ride that accomplished a zero-to-60mph sprint in 7.2 seconds en route to a 15.9-second quarter-mile. Even with time on the track, on Premi-um fuel, my test fried averaged a flat 20mpg in mixed-use driving.

On the highway, Evoque handles more like a car than like a tradi-tional sports-ute, as its indepen-dent MacPherson strut front and rear suspension with stabilizer bars, and electric speed-propor-tional power steering coupled with Continental Cross Contact 235/55R19 tires smooth out pave-ment inconsistencies while the stiff ride handles corners with only a little sway and no trucki-ness. Off road, Evoque can play well. The Terrain Response system offers different settings as needed to adapt to the conditions, and the crossover is steadied by Hill De-scent Control and Gradient Re-lease Control to help stabilize and control the vehicle during tough descents.

Well-endowed CabinInside, Evoque is packed with

luxury and tech, but its small physique seems to impact roomi-ness. With seating for five, front headroom is 40.3 inches with 39.7 in the rear seats, but the per-ception is that it is closer to 38 inches.

Legroom and shoulder hip fig-ures were not released when this vehicle was test driven, but cramped legroom feels like 36 inches.

Evoque’s cabin is endowed with LED ambient lighting that pro-vides illumination at night, with a range of colors that can be cho-sen by the driver. Standard cabin features include an alarm, vehicle anti-theft system, cruise control, keyless start and entry, adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel, power steering, trip computer, climate control, front floor mats, power door locks, electrochromic rearview mirror, mirror memory, power driver mirror and premium front and rear seat entertainment with the option package.

Safety is attended to with front and rear head airbags, dual front side-mounted airbags, passenger airbag occupant sensing deacti-vation, 4-wheel anti-lock brak-ing system, electronic brake force distribution, stability control, emergency brake assist, corner brake control, emergency brak-ing assist, ventilated front disc / solid rear disc brakes, rear door child safety locks, engine immo-

bilizer, auto delay off headlamps, dusk sensing headlamps, remote anti-theft alarm system and tire pressure monitoring.

The Evoque Pure (base mod-el) starts at $43,995, the Pres-tige at $52,395 and the Dynamic at $51,495. My Pure in Fuji White mated to a Cirrus /Lunar Grained leather interior added the Cli-mate Comfort Package for $1,000 (heated windscreen, front seats and steering wheel, heated wash-er jets); and Premium Package for $4000 (Navigation system, 825-watt Meridian Surround Sound

System with subwoofer and 16 speakers, voice control, adaptive headlamps and passive keyless entry). The sticker as tested was $48,995 and included destination charges of $850.

Chrysler 300 Sedan still turns heads

By aNN M. JOBFor ThE aSSoCiaTEd PrESS

The Chrysler 300 flagship sedan offers style on a grand scale and a roomy interior reminiscent of the big American sedans of yesteryear. But the V-8-powered SRT8 ver-sion of the 300 provides another, less nostalgic blast from the past: It guzzles gas.

The 470-horsepower, 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8, with the per-formance to rival pricier Mer-cedes-Benz and Lexus sedans, has a government fuel economy rat-ing of only 14 miles a gallon in city driving and 23 mpg on the high-way. That’s worse than the V-8-powered 2012 Jaguar XJ and Lexus LS 460 and even the 2012 Chev-rolet Silverado pickup truck with V-8.

But no one would confuse the expressive Chrysler 300 with a truck, a Jaguar or a Lexus.

Revamped over the past two years but still using the same rear-wheel-drive platform, the Chrys-ler 300 seems like a new, full-size sedan.

What once looked like a Bentley now has a more modern headlight shape, light-emitting diode day-time running lamps and a black-colored grille that adds a sinister, yet attractive flair to the 300 SRT8.

Inside, the 2012 300 SRT8 has an upscale appearance, with standard seat covering that feels and looks like real leather, 12-way power ad-justments on both front seats, real carbon fiber trim, richer-than-

expected carpeting and a built-in Garmin-based navigation system with an 8.4-inch display.

Best of all, the 2012 300 SRT8, which weighs more than 2 tons and stretches a full 16.7 feet long, rides comfortably and handles well.

Starting manufacturer’s sug-gested retail price, including desti-nation charge, is $28,995 for a base 2012 300 sedan with 292-horse-power, 3.6-liter V-6.

The 2012 300 SRT8, with 6.4-liter, Hemi V-8 producing 45 more horsepower than the previous V-8, has a starting retail price of $48,995. This includes a $1,000 gas guzzler tax imposed by the federal government.

Competitors to the 300 SRT8 can include the 365-horsepow-er, 2012 Ford Taurus SHO sedan, which has a starting retail price of $38,950 with 3.5-liter, tur-bocharged six-cylinder engine. Meanwhile, the 380-horsepower,

2012 Lexus LS 460 with 4.6-liter V-8 has a starting MSRP, includ-ing destination charge, of $68,005, and the 2012 Mercedes S550 with 429-horsepower V-8 starts at $95,375.

Some of today’s V-8 sedans, overworked with electronics and controls, don’t quite convey the forceful power that a V-8 can pro-vide.

But the Hemi V-8 in the 300 SRT8 is a throwback pushrod en-gine with overhead valves, and the transmission is a five-speed auto-matic.

While technology plays a role — specifically operating a two-stage variable intake and exhaust-valve timing system — the 300 SRT8’s low-end “oomph” or torque comes on fast at both low and higher speeds.

I squealed the tires backing up into my garage and zoomed for-

ward on highways with smooth force.

Torque peaks at 470 foot-pounds at 4,300 rpm, which is up 50 foot-pounds from last year’s V-8. Now, the sedan goes from 0 to 60 in a sporty 4.4 seconds, which is better than the 5.4 seconds that the LS 460 and S550 sedans boast.

The average fuel economy over combined city and highway travel was just 14.8 mpg. This translated into a 282-mile travel range on a single, 19.1-gallon tank. Chrysler advises to use premium gasoline to get peak performance.

People on the streets, hearing the engine growl, would stop to see what was coming. The big sedan and its Black Vapor, dark spoke wheels and low-profile, 20-inch tires held their attention.

Some tire noise came through as I drove on rough pavement, but the 300 SRT8 tester also was un-

expectedly quiet at stoplights and on new asphalt. There’s consid-erable sound insulation, and the optional uplevel stereo system de-livered crystal clear sounds.

Everyone but the middle rear passenger gets a generous amount of room on well-padded seats. In fact, sitting in the back seat with front seat up a bit on its 10.6-inch track, I stretched my legs and crossed them with ease. A full 41.8 inches of legroom are available in the front seats and just over 40 inches in the back seat. Not even a Cadillac Escalade offers this much rear-seat legroom.

By comparison, rear legroom in the Lexus LS 460 is 35.8 inch-es, and the Taurus has 38.1 inch-es. However, because of the drive tunnel hump in the middle of the 300’s rear floor, the middle person back there has no convenient spot to put his or her legs.

Vehicle title washing woes When you buy a used car,

you’re happy if the seller vacuums the interior and gives the exterior a good wash and wax before you take possession. But there’s one kind of “cleanup” that you want to avoid when you’re buying used: title washing.

T i t l e - o r “ b ra n d ” - washing occurs when a seller takes steps to hide the damaged or totaled condi-tion of a vehicle. When a vehicle is damaged or de-clared a total loss due to flood, fire, accident, natural disaster or other circum-stance, the state in which it’s titled will “brand” the title, noting the condition on the document. Unscru-pulous sellers circumvent the branding by repairing or camouflaging the damage and then titling the vehicle in a different state.

“ W h a t t i t l e wa s h i n g means for consumers is that they can end up pay-ing far more for a salvaged or totaled vehicle than it’s worth, thinking they’re buying a used vehicle in good condition,” says Josh-ua Steffan, director for Ex-perian Automotive. “Often,

a buyer will be unaware of the vehicle’s true condition until they’ve completed the purchase, driven the ve-hicle and started to expe-rience problems related to the hidden damage.”

Bureau of Transportation statistics indicate that in any given year, the number of used car sales is about three times the number of new vehicle sales. With the recession driving demand for used vehicles over the past few years, incidences of title washing have also increased.

In fact, during the first six months of 2011, 257,245 ve-hicles were initially brand-ed and then transferred or retitled in a second state with a clean title, accord-ing to the AutoCheck vehi-cle history report database. In 2008, that happened to just 185,000 vehicles. Most of the title washed vehicles in 2011 were branded as salvage (39 percent) or re-buildable (26 percent).

Title washing also tends to increase in regions that have experienced a natural disaster, like a hurricane. In such situations, flood wa-ters will often leave many vehicles unusable and many states will brand a vehicle’s title as flood damaged.

So how can you protect

yourself from the risk of buying a title-washed ve-hicle? Steffan offers some advice:

• Check the vehicle’s background by purchasing a vehicle history report. Most title-washed cars keep their original vehicle iden-tification numbers (VIN), which is all you need to or-der an AutoCheck report. The report includes infor-mation on the status of the title (including if it’s been branded), a check of pos-sible problems, an odom-eter check, the history of how the vehicle was used (as a rental or private vehi-cle) and any events, such as accidents or flood damage that have been reported on the vehicle. You’ll also get the ZIP code of where the vehicle has been registered, and you can use online re-sources to match that in-formation to regions where the vehicle might have been exposed to floods or other natural disasters.

• Have the vehicle in-spected by a mechanic. Some title washers, how-ever, are pros and may have reconstructed a car so well that it’s hard for even a pro-fessional to tell.

• When you first see the vehicle, look for discolor-ation on seats, seatbelts or

door panels that might in-dicate mineral deposits left behind by flood waters. You may see moisture on the inside of the instrument panel. Do a sniff test. A wa-ter-damaged vehicle might smell moldy or musty. Or, it might smell strongly of potent cleansers that the seller has used to mask the odor of mold.

• Fresh paint on newer-model cars may indicate the vehicle has been in an accident and had bodywork done. Mismatched panels and extremely low mileage may also be red flags.

• Always check to ensure the VIN on the vehicle’s paperwork matches the one on the vehicle. The location of the VIN varies from ve-hicle to vehicle, but you’ll often find it on a small metal plate in the corner of the windshield near-est the driver. Other loca-tions include on the engine or engine block, or the right front wheel well.

“Ultimately, a title check from a vehicle history re-port is the optimum way to know as much as possible about a vehicle you’re con-sidering buying,” Steffan says. “A modest investment can help you avoid making a costly mistake.”

GM recalls Chevy Sonic to check

brake pads

AssociAted press

DETROIT — General Mo-tors Co. said on Friday that it is recalling more than 4,000 of its 2012 Chevrolet Sonic subcompact cars to check for missing brake pads.

The possibility that some Sonics could be missing an inner or outer brake pad was discovered during warranty service for a rental vehicle customer. GM said the prob-lem “is expected to exist in

very few cars,” and there are no known crashes or injuries related to the issue. A miss-ing pad could require longer stopping distance, and con-tribute to a crash.

The recall involves 4,296 of GM’s 2012 Sonics sold in the U.S. The affected models are from the Orion Township, Mich., assembly plant, where the Sonic is built for sale in the U.S. and Canada.

Dealers will inspect the front brakes for missing inner or outer pads and, if a pad is missing, install new pads. If needed, a new brake caliper or brake rotor, or both, will also be installed.

This year, millions of Americans will be hitting the roads and facing cold temper-atures, along with the snowy and icy conditions winter weather brings. These factors are not only a nuisance, but at times, very dangerous, even for the most confident and experienced drivers. Simple driving maneuvers, such as starting, stopping and mak-ing turns can become very challenging if vehicles are not properly prepared for inclem-ent weather.

After their homes, the sec-ond-largest financial invest-ment for most is their vehicle; helping it stay in good work-ing order during the colder months of the year should be a top priority. Because mon-ey is often tight in the given economy, you may be reluc-tant to spend on services or maintenance that could be put off, at least for the short term. Such decisions, howev-er, could potentially shorten the life of a vehicle, decrease its fuel efficiency or even help create unsafe driving. To pre-pare vehicles for the winter months ahead, here are some simple tips to help you.

traction is keyThe economy has forced

many to postpone tire pur-chases, but with wet weath-er and unpredictable winter conditions ahead, now is not the time to have low tread on your tires. Your tires need good traction to help keep your car on the road. It’s im-portant to have the correct tire tread and in particularly

cold climates, drivers should consider investing in winter tires. The Winter Reactive Technology used in Good-year’s Ultra Grip Ice WRT tires offer a combination of innovative tire features to help drivers react to chang-ing weather conditions with enhanced starting, stopping and turning traction for su-perior performance on the roads. Winter driving experts such as the ILR Car Control School, located in Mount Al-bert, Ontario, choose Good-year UGI Ice WRT for supe-rior performance

Feel the pressureAs temperatures change,

so does tire pressure. Proper tire inflation is essential for increased automotive safe-ty, optimum driving perfor-mance and even good fuel mileage. Tires should be in-flated to the vehicle manu-facturer recommendations printed on the vehicle door placard or in the glove box and should be checked at least monthly. Over-inflation can lead to premature or ir-regular tire wear and under-inflation reduces a vehicle’s fuel efficiency by an average of 3.3 percent.

Keep it cleanKeeping vehicles clean will

help protect them from the chemicals and dirt that may attack the car’s finish and undercarriage. Be sure to use quality cleaners and waxes specifically designed for han-dling a car’s finish.

Keeping older relatives safe

As the American home has con-tinued to evolve with the speed of new technology, so has the garage. In order to keep up with the every-day busy lives of homeowners and the need for these homeowners to spread out and utilize all the space within their homes, garages have become a new frontier for func-tioning space within the home.

The majority of homeowners use the garage as the main entrance way into their homes, making the garage door and its opener imper-ative to the security of the home,

protecting the people and property behind it.

Before, garage doors only opened and closed to let your car in and out of the garage, and you had to be there to do it. But garage doors and openers have improved dra-matically in the last decade to do more. If you’re interested in up-grading your home’s security and curb appeal, don’t forget to check out some of the newest high-tech features:

• Control from anywhere around the world: Garage door openers are high tech now, and the LiftMaster openers with MyQ Technology al-low you to control your garage door - as well as other household items - from inside your house, while at the office or even from halfway across the world by using your

computer or smartphone. This technology lets you monitor if the garage door is opened or closed and allows you the freedom to operate it from a remote location, perhaps to grant access to a family member or allow a delivery.

• Electronic eyes - New garage door openers come with safe-ty sensors that prevent the door from closing if something were to be underneath. If an object breaks the beam of infrared light spanning the width of the door, the garage door won’t close - and if some-thing were to cross the sensor as the door is closing, it would cause the door to reverse direction and open up again. This can help pro-tect small children and pets from being struck by the closing door.

• Timers for closing - You’ve

probably forgotten to close your garage door after pulling out of the driveway at least once in your life, leaving your home and prop-erty wide open to anyone passing by. New garage door openers al-low you to customize the settings on your garage door opener to en-sure that the door will close after one minute, five minutes or even 10 minutes of being open.

• Power out? Not a problem - The harsh winter weather can leave many homes without power for extended periods of time. Lift-Master openers are equipped with battery backup, which is very use-ful during a power failure in severe weather conditions, providing your family with reliable, uninterrupted access to your home and automo-biles in the garage.

• Shed light on safety - Exterior lights also have seen technology upgrades, and when placed next to your garage, can deter unwanted visitors. Save money with solar powered lights, or lights that are motion-activated to brightly shine when something approaches the garage. In addition to discouraging unwanted visitors, lights also give your family members a safer envi-ronment when arriving home af-ter dark. Using new technology in and around your garage helps you maintain security and safety and can improve your life in so many different ways. How to keep your garage tidy during winter season

When families are gath-ered together this holiday season, you may start to notice changes in an older relative’s driving behav-iors and begin to have some concerns. You are not alone.

With the number of driv-ers 70 and older increasing - and one in five Americans caring for an older loved one - the number of adults dealing with concerns about their older relative’s driving abilities is on the rise and many are unsure on how to address their concerns.

Resist the temptation to bring up this sensitive topic: Do your homework first

“Taking time to prepare can alleviate concerns and help you start out on the right foot with a thought-ful, positive conversation,” says Jodi Olshevski, an ex-pert on aging for The Hart-ford, an insurance compa-ny. “Once you get the facts and educate yourself about the resources available, you will be in a better position to help.”

Just because your loved one is older, it doesn’t auto-matically mean you should be concerned about their ability to drive. Plenty of people over the age of 70 get around just as easily as their more youthful coun-terparts.

If you’re worried, you should find out if your con-cerns are valid. Learn the warning signs, get in the car

and observe the older driv-er. “Choose the right mes-senger - the person who has the best rapport with the driver, and choose the right time - which is most likely not during family gatherings,” says Julie Lee, vice president of the AARP Driver Safety Program.

Warning signsIf you’re concerned about

your loved one’s abil-ity to drive, the first thing you should do is get in the car to observe them first-hand. A comprehensive list of warning signs for older drivers and other resourc-es for older drivers can be found at www.safedriving-foralifetime.com. Here are some examples of the types of things you may want to look for:

Fairly minor warning signs: Vehicle dents and scrapes that weren’t there before, single mistakes that appear to be more of a fluke than a pattern. More seri-ous warning signs: Trouble making left-hand turns, driving in the wrong lane of traffic, stopping in traf-fic for no reason, consistent and frequent mistakes.

“Making a single, minor driving mistake doesn’t mean that a person needs to stop driving,” says Ol-shevski. “Families need to look for patterns of warning signs and an increase in fre-quency and severity of the warning signs.”

initiating the conversation

Ideally, families should initiate the first conversa-tion about safety long be-

fore driving becomes a problem, advises Lee. Car accidents, near misses, self-regulation of driving and health changes all provide opportunities to talk about driving skills.

There’s nothing that can make this conversation an easy one, but there are ways you can promote productive dialogue. If you determine that there’s reason for con-cern about your loved one’s ability to drive, approaching the situation in a thoughtful and nonthreatening way is important.

“Comments about how much more congested traf-fic has become recently or about an accident in the news can be a good way to start a conversation about driving safety,” says Lee.

In addition to offer-ing safety courses for old-er drivers at www.aarp.org/drive, AARP also of-fers an online seminar for those who may need to ap-proach the topic of driving with older family members at www.aarp.org/weneed-totalk.

Starting the conversa-tion is often the most dif-ficult part and your ap-proach can set the tone for how it proceeds. Here are a few suggestions for starting the conversation in a non-threatening way that will make the older driver more comfortable expressing his or her feelings.

• “Did you hear about the car accident in the news to-day?”

• “Have you asked your doctor about the effects of your new medication on your driving?”

• “That was a close call yesterday. I worry about your safety on the road.”

•“I’m worried about you getting in a car accident with all the ice and snow on the road.”

• “I’m glad that you’ve cut down on night driving. I would never want you to drive when you’re not com-fortable or feel that it’s too risky.”

some other tips• Prepare for the conver-

sation and do your home-work.

• Choose the right mes-senger and the right time.

• Be supportive, positive, factual and nonthreatening.

• Have transportation al-ternatives ready.

• Note that it might take more than one conversation to address the issue. Let the person know you’re there whenever he or she is inter-ested in chatting about the subject.

Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all solution when addressing problems your older driver may be having behind the wheel. Some issues can be reme-died with improvements in physical fitness, increased attention and driving safe-ty classes. Other situations may call for more immedi-ate action.

To learn more about ini-tiating a productive con-versation about driving with your loved one, visit The Hartford’s website and download a free guidebook titled “We Need to Talk: Family Conversations with Older Drivers.”
