Yr 7 Meet & Greet for Families

4 February, 5.30 pm , SMC

SUCCESS:Every Student, Every Day.

Well, we have come to the end of another year. I would like to

thank everyone inside the Ayr High family as you have all contributed to making 2019 another fantastic year for the students of Ayr High. The Ayr High family is made up of a very broad range of stakeholders that contribute to our school. It is the students, the parents/carers, our wonderful staff, our partnership organisations like Rotary, QMEA, ARTIE, FOGS, Queensland Health, Evolution Mining, Wilmar, Ergon, TAFE and all of our local businesses that support our school and come together to create the fantastic educational opportunities we offer. As 2019 ends, our focus turns to 2020. Last week, we had our Year 6 into 7 Orientation Days. They were two days where we as a school, welcomed in our new Year 7 students for 2020. The students came from 11 different schools from across the district and they were able to meet their classmates, their teachers and their ”buddies”. The students participated in a range of

activities including sports house-based activities to help for friendships, team spirit and general confidence before starting with us officially next year.2020 is also a Musical year! The 2020 Musical production will be ROCK OF AGES: High School Edition!! This musical is full of 80's glam metal rock with songs from Bon Jovi, Poison, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Styx and Journey just to name a few. Mums and dads, this will finally give you a reason to play your music at home, for research purposes of course. I am super excited to see all the spandex, big hair and fluro leopard-print costumes that will make our production of ROCK OF AGES: High School Edition another huge hit in 2020.2020 will also bring us our first cohort of Year 12 students in the New QCE system. We have been working really hard this year to ensure our students are best placed to achieve at their very best. We are also committed to ensure our graduation celebration traditions remain the same allowing the Ayr High

family to congratulate and farewell our seniors in a manner befitting finishing 13 years of schooling. On behalf of the Ayr High family, I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. I am looking forward to welcoming everyone back in January for the 2020 school year, its going to be awesome!Yours in education

Craig WhittredPrincipal

Season’s Greetings!

As one cohort finishes their secondary phase of education,

another begins. Last week, it was my absolute pleasure to be part of our Year 6 into 7 Orientation Days. Students from over 11 primary schools joined staff and students for two days of house spirit, fun and friendship. The focus of these days was student wellbeing as LIP Leaders and staff helped the newest members of the Ayr High family navigate their new environment, school expectations and class groupings. These two days, however, are only one facet of our transition program which supports students from Year 5 through to Year 9.As our current Year 7 students move into Year 8, we will continue to support their transition by continuing their relationship with some of their Year 7 teachers. Mrs Boland, who has taught the current Year 7 students, will also teach Year 8 and will be the Year 8 Co-ordinator. Ms Dorset and Mr Hugo who

From the Deputy Principalby Ms Anna D'Ilario, Deputy Principal

currently teach the Year 7 students will also take a Year 8 class next year. In addition, Mrs Fran Keane, who was at Ayr State School, will also be joining the Ayr High junior secondary team and will be teaching across Year 7 and Year 8 next year. Welcome Mrs Keane! This week, Mr Whittred, Mr Flynn and myself were honoured to be part of the graduating ceremonies at some of our primary schools. It was wonderful to see so many Year 6 students acknowledged for their achievements and success, and I am sure I speak for all our staff when I say that we are excited that you are joining us at Ayr High next year! With a new school year, comes new opportunities! 2020 will see Ayr High’s production, ROCK OF AGES: High School Edition, capture staff and students in a web of nostalgia as they re-live the classic rock songs of the 1980s. Yes, 2020 will herald the return of leg warmers, fluro colours and even bigger, louder hair! I knew my teasing

Students’ Summer Scholarship Successby Ms Anna D'Ilario, Deputy Principal

Congratulations to Jack Shaw and Geraldine Jones who have both been

awarded full scholarships to the University of Southern Queensland’s McGregor Music Retreat over the Christmas holidays. Both Jack and Geraldine will travel to Toowoomba for the residency program (13-17 January, 2020). The goal of the program is to support, teach and encourage musicians through individualised lessons and specialist sectional tutors. Students from across the state will work with industry professionals and gain an understanding of recording and music production techniques.Jack is our 2020 School Vice Captain and features as the bass guitarist in local band, PolyX, who have performed at various charity events in the Townsville and Burdekin regions, including McHappy Day. Whilst Jack is the leading bass guitar player in the school and is a member of Ayr High’s Senior Concert Band, he also has skills on the guitar and piano, and regularly switches between them during performances. He has participated in many school and community performance opportunities including the Burdekin Eisteddfod, Burdekin Festival of Arts, as well as Popstars: the 90’s Musical in which he was part of the live band. Jack studies Music in Practice in school which compliments his extensive history of live performance opportunities. USQ’s summer retreat program will enable Jack to work one-on-one with a professional bass guitarist for the week, exploring various instrumental techniques that will take his bass playing to a sophisticated professional level. Geraldine is a talented multi-instrumentalist who studies both Music and Music in Practice at Ayr High. Her talents lie primarily with the piano, ukulele and guitar - which she’s been able to show off at lunchtime performances to students in her cohort and to younger grades in the music classroom. Geraldine also produces high quality compositions, often drawing inspiration from classical masters such as Beethoven and Mozart, as well as more contemporary music featured in Anime TV shows and Korean pop. Geraldine has studied classroom music from Year 9 through to her senior years whereby she’s been able to cement her performance and composing talents and challenge herself with exposure in public events. USQ’s scholarship provides Geraldine with the opportunity to work with a professional pianist, as well as the chance to explore a variety of different genres on piano including Jazz, Blues, RnB and Reggae. This is a fantastic opportunity for both music students to develop their instrumental techniques under the guidance of professional musicians and will allow them to see how music fits into a tertiary setting. Special thanks go to both Mr Phillips and Ms Wall, for both their encouragement and dedication to music students, and the Music Support Group for their continued support of the performing arts program at Ayr State High School.

$20 Boss Challengeby Ms Irima Vee, Business Teacher

Throughout Semester 2, the Year 9 Economics and Business class has undertaken the

$20 Boss Challenge as part of their unit on entrepreneurship. This is an in-school challenge developed by the Foundation for Young Australians that lends each student $20 of start-up capital to create their own business. The program builds financial literacy and enterprise skills. Students are then able to put these skills into practice in a ‘real world’ challenge, where they develop a unique business concept and then market and operate this business in the school community. Students launched their business concepts prior to a two week trading period and gained valuable feedback on their ideas from local business people. A huge thanks to John Bonanno (Sportfirst), Diane Hutton (Valley Cash Store), Hayley Escriva (Tosh’s Convenience Store) and Dimitrios Papadimitriou (Amdett Services and Plastic Recycling) for their input at this critical phase.

All Paws InAll Paws In has focused their business on a niche market, offering animal themed products such as pens, key rings and socks to customers. In addition, they implemented other fundraising activities such as the petting zoo, sold raffles for a hamper and held a ‘Guess the Number’ lolly jar competition. A clever marketing campaign drawing paw prints leading up to their stall, engaging parade announcements and a partnership with Lids 4 Kids, helped them capitalise on their various products. The creative idea and use of the groups very own pets being brought in for the petting zoo to increase student wellbeing, as well as the groups marketing campaign, saw the business achieve a profit of over $230 throughout the two week trading period. Profits will be donated to the local Burdekin Pet Rescue, an important cause assisting animal foster care and adoption in the local community.

Ice Cream GalsThis enterprise brought the fan favourite ice-cream to Ayr SHS this term. Customers were able to choose to eat their ice-cream in cones or cups with a variety of toppings. Despite being located in A Block at the Retail Centre, their parade announcement proved quite effective as students were lining up for this cold treat on the first day of trading. Working within the Retail Centre, allowed the business to operate effectively as they had use of the freezer within close proximity. This made the operation easier to run when serving customers. Despite only making a modest profit, this group gained valuable insight into the importance of effective marketing strategies, logistics, business operation and the importance of working as a team. Profits will be donated to the Community Education Counsellor program run by Mrs Ollie Henaway.

Issue No 14 - 2019 SUCCESS: Every Student, Every Day. Page 7

Lids 4 KidsThis enterprise offered a unique service to the school community highlighting the importance of recycling with a strong planet focus. In collaboration with the newly launched school operation Global Hawks, Lids 4 Kids provided a recycling service throughout the school which involved collecting, washing, sorting and counting lids that had been collected during their lunch times. Though a timely process, the business remained dedicated to their cause and consistently made sure their message about recycling continued through their use of marketing strategies such as posters, student notices and parade announcements. Although a profit was not made for this enterprise, their main focus of planet and changing the mindset and behaviour of their target market, could be considered a success as over 1500 lids were collected throughout the term. All profits will be donated to the Lids 4 Kids organisation.

Pop ItFun, bright and bubbly was brought to the Pop It table (stall) and remained as part of the business branding throughout trading weeks. The resilient three, produced all of their own products from scratch and set up their stall along the busy walkway outside the office and Resource Centre, proving to be a successful business decision. This fun-sized product was extremely popular with the students as they sold out every lunch time they were operating, even selling out within 10 minutes of their first day of trading. The business soon realised that the demand was much higher than expected and an increase in production lead to a higher profit margin being made. With an impressive profit of over $410 achieved, this proved that dedication and resilience leads to great things. Profits will be donated to Laurie’s Love.

Puffy DogsThis enterprise got off to a rocky start with a couple of changes to the team leading up to the launch and trading weeks. Nevertheless, the team was adamant about getting the puffy dog formula perfect before trading took place with the assistance of a couple of Lids 4 Kids members helping them test the product. The first week of trading proved difficult with the business learning that marketing is definitely a key element of any business, especially when the location does not receive a lot of foot traffic. They also learnt that maintaining stock and working with different ingredients can throw a spanner in the works. In addition, confusion with product prices impacted sales dramatically. Nevertheless, this duo continued producing puffy dogs in the face of adversity with the assistance of several helpers. They put up some posters the following week and reinvigorated their recipe by adding cheese to the puffy dogs on the last day of sales. These adjustments proved successful as they sold out of the product. The duo finally finding their groove within the market. Nonetheless, this enterprise made a profit of $51.00 and will also be donating to Laurie’s Love.

Orientation Days

by Ms Anna D'Ilario, Deputy Principal

Last week, Ayr High was proud to host 110 excited Year 6 students as part of our Orientation Days.

After weeks of preparation, the newest Ayr High cohort joined our LIP leaders and teachers for two jam-packed days of activities designed to both welcome students to the Ayr High family and support them in their transition to high school. Mrs Brock organised a daily breakfast for the hundred or so staff and students who were keen to start the day with a full belly. Next, students collected their badges which identified their house group and class group, before moving onto some ice-breaker activities. Morning tea and lunch (hotdogs), were sandwiched between students rotating through a range of activities, such as treasure hunts and relationship building which were designed to help the Year 6 students get to know each other and our school. At the end of the first day, students were then organised into their class groupings and got to meet their future classmates and Year 7 teachers. The second day again started with a hearty breakfast and students organising themselves into House Families where war cries and house skits were practised. Again, morning tea and lunch (subway) were sandwiched between students rotating through sessions before arriving at the event everyone had been waiting for - the house competition! Each house competed in a series of challenges that required participants to co-operate with one another. There was dancing! There were war cries! There were hula-hoops! There were balls of various sizes! In the end, only one house could claim the Spirit Stick! That house, was Phillip! Congratulations, Phillip!Special mention goes to all of our wonderful staff and students who contributed to the success of the day. In particular, our LIP Leaders did a terrific job of helping our newest fledglings find their “wings”. Not even the sweltering humidity could dampen our LIP Leaders’ exuberance as they organised treasure hunts, assembled students into class groupings, played handball, prepared house skits, developed friendships and rallied the future Year 7 students until their spirited cries could be heard across the ovals! Great work, team!Next year in Semester 1, our LIP Leaders will be organising lunchtime activities with our future Year 7 students, participate in the Year 7 Afternoon and join us for our two days at Alva Beach.
