Making Shiftwork Tolerable Timothy H. Monk and Simon Folkard
This excellent, practical, and jargon-free book guides the reader through the many and varied forms of shiftwork, adopting from the outset a broad definition of the term to embrace any regularly-taken employment outside the "day working window," those hours between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The authors note the influence of changing family organization, where a dual income/ double-jobbing (moonlighting) household will opt for the flexibility of shiftwork and out-of-hours availability of goods and serv- ices to secure an acceptable standard of liv- ing. They review three classes of study: field, survey, and laboratory simulation.

Fitness for Work The Role of Physical Demands
Analysis and Physical Capacity Assessment
T. M. Fraser
Based on his distinguished career in occu- pational ergonomics, Professor Fraser reevaluates the medical selection procedures for disabled and able-bodied labor market entrants. He emphasizes the role and signifi- cance of "physical demands analysis" and "functional capacity assessment" and pro- vides a re-examination of the whole concept of fitness for work. He acknowledges the prerogatives of management and labor, but emphasizes, too, the need to consider hu- manitarian and legislative concerns.

American academics are faced with crucial new changes in their pension plans. This is the only book that tells them how to take advantage of the opportunities, and
avoid the pitfalls, of the new environment.
How TIAA-CREF Members Should Deal with the
Dramatic Changes in Their Pensions
Willard F. Enteman For decades, the major pension insurer for American academics, TIAA-CREF, had virtual monopolistic control of its partici- pants' savings. The funds were locked in until retirement and the only option thereafter was to purchase an annuity from TIAA- CREF. Those restrictions were removed in 1990. Retirement 101 is the first guide to the TIAA-CREF changes. Readers will find clear, jargon-free, nonbiased advice on all aspects of retire- ment planning, critical to plan members who now not only can, but must, make decisions about their future.
