The book or paper(s) may be a case history, a report of research represent- ing new results, or primarily expository.

Judgments will be made by the committee using the following criteria:

(1) The magnitude of the contribution to the advancement of the state of the art of operations research,

(2) The originality of the ideas or methods, (3) New vistas of application opened up, (4) The degree to which unification or simplification of existing theory

or method is achieved, and (5) Expository clarity and excellence.

1. DATA BASE ORGANIZATION FOR DATA MANAGEMENT By SAKTI P. GHOSH A Volume in the COMPUTER SCIENCE AND APPLIED MATHEMATICS Series

This timely and welcome volume covers the basic theories and techniques of data organization in computer storage for data management. Its aim is to familiarize students and researchers with the fundamental concepts of data organization without bringing in implementation details. The merits, drawbacks, and trade-offs associated with the various methods of organization of data are fully discussed. CONTENTS: Data Structures. Queries and Query Languages. Searching on One Field. Key to Address Transformation. Alge- braic Filing Schemes. Consecutive Retrieval Property. Organi- zation on Drum Storage. Access Path Retrieval. 1977, 394 pp., $29.50/?20.95 ISBN: 0-12-281850-4

THEORY AND APPLICATIONS OF RELIABILITY With Emphasis on Bayesian and Nonparametric Methods VOLUMES 1 and 2 Edited by CHRIS P. TSOKOS and ISMAIL N. SHIMI

The papers comprising these volumes were presented at the Conference on the Theory and Applications of Reliability with Emphasis on Bayesian and Nonparametric Methods held at the University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida, December 15-18, 1975. The conference was jointly sponsored by the United States Air Force, Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), and the University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida. Both volumes include presentations of the nonparametric, classical, and em- pirical Bayes methods; contributors also discuss philosophical aspects of this approach and its application to reliability studies.

Volume 1 contains theoretical models primarily in the Bayes- ian and nonparametric approach to reliability along with a survey of this subject area. Volume 2 contains more applica- tions-oriented models.

4. THEORY AND APPLICATION OF MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING By G. MITRA

This book begins by introducing the reader to the exciting possibilities of modelling real life situations with the techniques of mathematical programming. This is followed by the two major sections, the first covering linear and the second nonlinear pro- gramming, with the author tacitly acknowledging and describing the use of algorithms specially designed for digital computers. Unique to a treatise of this nature is the chapter on the linear complementarity problem, and the combinatorial aspect of the pivot theory used for its solution. The book also includes valu- able appendices where the techniques of using an up-to-date large scale mathematical programming system and modelling language are considered in detail. 1976, 224 pp., $18.00/?8.20 ISBN: 0-12-500450-8

5. JUDGMENT AND DECISION PROCESSES IN APPLIED SETTINGS Edited by MARTIN F. KAPLAN and STEVEN SCHWARTZ A Volume in the ACADEMIC PRESS SERIES IN COGNITION AND PERCEPTION

Perhaps the most complete examination of important applied decision making areas using the concepts of basic decision making theory, this book provides both new directions for re- search and practical suggestions for practical decision making. Articles show the use of information-integration, social judg- ment, and expectancy theory, and multiattribute utility measure- ment to clarify applied decision making processes in such areas as mass transportation, medicine, the criminal justice system, agriculture, college admissions, conflict resolution, industry, marketing, and the military. 1977, in preparation ISBN: 0-12-397240-X

DECISIONS WITH MULTIPLE OBJECTIVES Preferences and Value Tradeoffs Ralph L. Keeney, Woodward-Clyde Consultants, San Francisco, & Howard Raiffa, Harvard University How can decision makers structure problems? If you're willing to think hard and systematically, Keeney and Raiffa offer the answer. Their approach examines everyday, real-world problems-from elementary problems to the vexing tradeoffs involving incommensurable objectives. The book demonstrates how a reasonable and responsible choice among alterna- tives can be made-and made successfully. In a comprehensive and integrated manner, it shows how decision analysis can be applied to any particular problem- environmental, educational, health, etc. Besides the applications-oriented approach, you'll discover: * Theoretical results and techniques previously found only in periodical literature * Concepts introduced for certainty situations becoming stepping stones for han-

dling the more realistic uncertainty situations * The theory of quantifying preferences over multiple objectives, and applications

of that theory * Mathematical complexities in later chapters, presented in such a way that you

can skip the more difficult sections * Special topics, including preferences over time and aggregation of individual

preferences, choices affecting welfare of others, etc.

If you're interested in making the right decision, you'll benefit from reading this book. It helps you find and make the right choice.
