W Connell, Nancy Fraser, Rosemary Hennessy, Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Chantal Mouffe, Linda Nicholson, Cindy Patton, Shane Phelan, Gyan Prakash, Ali Rattansi, Steven Seidman, Iris Young Cambridge Cultural Social Studies 47516-3 Hardback $59.95 47571-6 Paperback $19.95

Reason and Rhetoric in the Philosophy of Hobbes Quentin Skinner Using, for the first time, the full range of manuscript as well as printed sources, this book docu- ments an entirely new view of Hobbes' intellectual development, and reexamines the shift from a humanist to a scientific culture in European moral and political thought. By examining Hobbes' philosophy against the background of his humanist education, Professor Skinner rescues this most difficult and challenging of political philoso- phers from the intellectual isolation in which he is so often discussed. 55436-5 Hardback $49.95

The Social and Political Thought of Bertrand Russell The Development of an Aristocratic Liberalism Philip Ironside This pioneering study of Bertrand Russell's social and political thought between 1896 and 1938 is the first book to undertake a thorough investi- gation of the intellectual and cultural context out of which Russell's ideas emerged. Main- taining a sympathetic but critical stance towards Russell's almost innumerable political postures, the author renders that thought both plausible and coherent by placing its development against a significant historical background. 47383-7 Hardback $49.95

Riches and Poverty An Intellectual History of Political Economy in Britain, 1750-1834 Donald Winch The work of Adam Smith provided a key for studying the rich and poor and assessing the American and French revolutions and their aftermath. By focusing on the entire revolutionary tide from the beginning of the large-scale Land Reform in 1946 through "Socialist Reconstruction" to the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, the gap is closed between the perspectives of the historians and the social scientists.

"Rethinking the Chinese Revolution" should be required reading for all scholars studying modem China. < Rebuilding the 3 Economies of Posteommunuist Europe Editor: John L. Campbell, Harvard University

] Rebuilding the Economies of Postcommunist Europe examines many of the important economic changes that Q have occurred in the political economies of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union since the

2 collapse of the old communist regimes beginning in 1989.

Unlike much previous research in this area, the articles in this issue are non-traditional. Some adopt an ap- proach based in institutional analysis, while others begin from a more structural approach. All take seriously how the economic changes that are under way in the region are deeply embedded in a variety of political and social,

% as well as economic relations-and they recognize that to t fully understand how these changes are occurring, we

must explicitly incorporate that insight into the analysis. ^ Empirically oriented, each article examines the transfor-

mations that have occurred in several postcommunist countries, and then contrast these transformations with the situations that existed under the old communist

Q systems. This comparative and historical approach i provides insights into the important differences as will as

similarities among the countries involved, and serves as a reminder not to generalize excessively about the changes

o that are unfolding. For those interested in political and social economics, this in-depth scholarship is a unique and valuable examination of the key issues currently facing the countries in postcommunist Europe.

,] MARX, DURKHEIM, WEBER: FORMATIONS OF MODERN SOCIAL THOUGHT by KENNETH MORRISON, Wilfred Laurier University

ZD |Any course in sociologi- cal or political theory requires a keen under- standing of Marx, Durkheim, and Weber. Yet, for undergraduates, their first encounter with the ideas of these three thinkers often proves a difficult experience. Now, Kenneth Morrison offers students a clear, exhaustive guide to the key ideas produced by Marx, Durkheim, and Weber. Not only does he

D III 1 explain the meaning of key ideas but he also places them in their appropriate historical context. Students therefore gain an immediate grasp of both the roots and contemporary relevance of the concepts presented- and, just as important, how they relate to classical tradition. In addition, an unparalleled glossary is included.

If you are teaching a course on sociological or political theory-or if you want a quick brush-up on the ideas of these three key thinkers-look no further than this volume. 1995 (November) / 350 pages / $69.95 (h) (75627) / $21.95 (p) (75635)

Local Governance Around the World Editor: Henry Teune, University of Pennsylvania

This issue of The ANNALS explores the impact of democratization on local government and politics.

Local Governance Around the World looks at local and global linkages that are impacting local politics in countries throughout Europe and Asia.

The articles combine theoretical perspectives on change with empirical data from local political leaders. The central theme is that local politics

Q : ) must be examined not only simply as local-national *_ = relations, but in the context of global changes that

are now directly impacting localities.

* - Local Governance Around the World will be of ?3 ro interest to anyone concerned with the future,

structure, and strength of local politics. As the n - 4 political landscape around the world continually ^ X :=transforms, the study of politics and governance

outside of national capitols is essential for P= understanding the practical problems of change- '~ 0 especially in light of the fact that these changes are 4*i Vn once again focusing on the grass roots of 0 democracy and issues of local autonomy.
