Unlike much previous research in this area, the articles in this issue are non-traditional. Some adopt an ap- proach based in institutional analysis, while others begin from a more structural approach. All take seriously how the economic changes that are under way in the region are deeply embedded in a variety of political and social,
% as well as economic relations-and they recognize that to t fully understand how these changes are occurring, we
must explicitly incorporate that insight into the analysis. ^ Empirically oriented, each article examines the transfor-
