GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS
REVIEW PROCESS
The Journal welcomes articles on subjects of interest to professional conservators. Subjects may include conservation treatment case studies; issues of conser- vation history, philosophy, or method; conservation
research; or technical studies aimed at addressing questions in allied fields. Short communications as well as longer submissions are welcomed.
Manuscripts are reviewed for their interest and over- all suitability for the Journal, as well as for accuracy, clarity, and effectiveness of communication. The author will be expected to complete minor revisions within one month and major revisions within three months. Length of time between submission and
publication varies according to the amount of revi- sion necessary. If an article is accepted with minor revisions, and the author successfully responds to the editor's suggestions, the article is usually published within six to eight months of submission.
Format
Papers must be submitted in English. If an author is not fully bilingual, a professional translator should translate the paper into English. Authors should submit eight copies of their article and artwork.
Manuscripts must be typed in a 10- or 12-point stan- dard typeface, on 8.5-by-11-inch white paper (one side only), double-spaced (including captions and
references) with a 1-inch margin or more on all sides; pages must be numbered and stapled top left. Numbered section headings should be used. Papers should include the following parts (in this order): an abstract of 100-200 words, the text, references, a list of suppliers of equipment (if any) with addresses, an author biography of approximately 100 words, and a list of figure captions (if applicable). Recent back issues of the Journal should be consulted for format and style.
Length
Manuscripts should be limited to 30 pages double- spaced, including references; illustrations should be
limited to a number equal to the length of six printed
pages of theJournal. The submission of short commu-
nications is also encouraged.
Reference Style
Reference style should be in the author-date format
described in Chapter 16 of The Chicago Manual of
Style, 14th edition (examples follow). Footnotes
should not be used, and endnotes should be limited
to three.
ARTWORK
High-quality copies of illustrations and photographs are acceptable rather than originals for the review
process, but authors must include eight sets so that
each editor and reviewer can have a copy.
Black-and-White Photographs
Eight copies of all black-and-white photographs must be submitted for the review process. Copies should be high-quality reproductions so that review-
ers can discern the nature of the photo. Original artwork is not needed during the review process. Black-and-
white prints or slides may be used for the final production
process. Contact the AIC production manager when consid-
ering submitting electronic files.
Color Photographs
Only photographs and illustrations that require color
to be fully meaningful will be considered for color
printing. Prints or high-quality copies must be
submitted for the review process so that reviewers
can discern the nature of the photographs. Again, authors must supply eight copies for the review
process. Photographs should not be scanned into the
manuscript portion of the document, but rather
attached as separate hard copies. Original artwork is not
needed during the review process. Color prints or slides may be used for the final production process. Contact the AIC
production manager when considering submitting electronic
files.

GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS
Illustrations
Upon acceptance of the article, one copy of original illustrations must be submitted. All black-and-white illustrations must be of a suitable visual standard for
reproduction. Drawings must be in black ink, sharply rendered; figures, graphs, and tables must be printed on a laser printer (at least 300 dpi), typeset, or
provided in another high-quality camera-ready form.
Again, eight copies of illustrations must be provided so that each editor and reviewer will have a set to review.
Captions
Each photograph and illustration should be identified on the front with the author's name and figure or table number; Arabic numerals should be used. All illustrative material must be accompanied by a listing of captions at the end of the paper. Captions should be concise. Detailed discussion of what the illustrative material shows should appear in the text of the paper; the text should include a reference to the figure or table by number. For magnified photographs, the
caption should include a correct description (such as
scanning electron micrograph) and should include the magnification. Appropriate credit must be given for all photographs not taken by the author. The owner of any work illustrated should be listed.
Captions for a work of art should include artist, title, date, media or materials, dimensions (in metric), and credit (including museum number).
PERMISSIONS
Authors are responsible for the content and accuracy of their articles as well as for obtaining written
permission to reproduce material owned or copy- righted by others for national and international distribution. This written permission must be submit- ted to the AIC office.
ACCEPTANCE FOR REVIEW
Only a complete manuscript with all the parts indi- cated in these guidelines, and prepared as specified
herein, will be accepted. Authors must supply eight copies of their article so that each editor and reviewer can have a complete manuscript.
Previous Publication
The substance of proposed articles must not have been published previously, or have been submitted elsewhere, with the following exceptions: The Journal welcomes articles that have appeared in AIC annual
meeting preprints, AIC specialty group preprints and
postprints, and training conference postprints. Ques- tions about submitting papers that have appeared in
proceedings of other meetings should be directed to the editor-in-chief through the AIC office at (202) 452-9545.
Corresponding Authors
If there are multiple authors, one should be desig- nated the corresponding author who will be respon- sible for all communication with the editorial office.
COMPUTER DISCS
If your article is accepted, you will need to provide a
copy of the revised article on disc, either in Microsoft Word or as a text-only file. There is no need to supply the disc for the initial review.
PAGE PROOFS & OFFPRINTS
Papers will be copyedited to conform to JAIC style. Authors will have the opportunity to review both
manuscripts and page proofs before the article is
published to ensure that nothing in regard to the
meaning of the paper has been changed. However, JAIC reserves the right to maintain a consistent style. As such, any changes the copyeditor makes in regard to reference style, punctuation, capitalization, stan- dard American spelling, etc., will not be changed to suit individual tastes. If authors object to the article
being copyedited for style, they may choose to with- draw the paper at this time.
Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author

The author will receive 25 free offprints; in the case of multiple authors the number remains at 25. More offprints may be obtained by prior agreement, with the author or authors bearing the additional cost.
DEADLINES
The deadlines for receipt of manuscripts are: Febru-
ary 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1. Please address questions and send manuscripts to the editor, in care of the American Institute for Conservation, 1717 K Street, N.W., Suite 200, Washington, D.C. 20006; (202) 452-9545; fax: (202) 452-9328; [email protected].
