From the Editor…
I would like to welcome the management, players and supporters from Fremantle United for today’s games. Today is a historic occasion for the Balga Soccer Club, our first home game back in the semi-professional Saturday competition in seventeen years. A big thank you must go to club President Ken Shorto and various committee members in recent seasons, who have pushed hard to make this happen. Also a big thank you to senior coach Martyn Day and his players, had we not improved on the pitch like we had over the past two years, we probably wouldn’t be back in the State League. Now that we are back, the hard work has already started, with many things going on behind the scenes. We are determined to make this year a good season both on and off the pitch. We are also providing this free match day program at each home game during the season, the first time the club will have a regular program since the 1980’s. If you have any club news, be it juniors, seniors, masters or women, please email me at [email protected] Please enjoy the hospitality and facilities on offer at Balga Soccer Club throughout the day. From the President…
Welcome to all our supporters and visitors from Fremantle United. Today is the culmination of many years of planning and hard work behind the scenes to have Balga back into State League football. We can all be proud of the steps taken over the past three years both on and off the field. I would like to say a big thank you to all those who helped upgrade the interior of our club which now is as good as most in the league. I am also very proud of the senior players over this time, who along with our coaching staff led by Martyn, have worked very hard to lift the standard of football at Balga. These steps forward are definitely not the end of our journey and much is still to be done for us to become a permanent fixture in these leagues. We need to continue to make improvements especially behind the scenes to ensure that the future people at Balga from the six year olds to the oldest masters player can all enjoy their football at the highest level available. On that point it was a disappointing start to the year last week with several incidents of bad behaviour on and off the field. We all must respect the fact that everyone who walks onto the football field have the same goals. To win the game and enjoy the experience. A couple of opposition teams forgot that last weekend and we hope that with the support of the football authorities and our own players , we can help improve this situation. It is not acceptable also for our supporters and parents to be involved in verbal abuse of players or officials and we ask everyone at the club help make the football experience a good positive one throughout the Club. Looking forward to seeing you all this afternoon at what will be a great day for Balga. Ken Shorto Balga SC President

From the Coach…
Good Afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the committee, players and supporters of Fremantle United, in what will be our first home game back in State League Soccer in seventeen years. After my first two successful seasons as the club's first team coach in Sunday soccer, I now look forward with the rest of my coaching staff and players to the transition into State League soccer. I know it is a big step up from Sunday Division Two, but with the acquisition of a number of experienced players at this level, combined with the players we have retained from last season, I feel that we are equipped to cope with the demands of this division. Unfortunately our first league game against Forrestfield did not go as we would of hoped and we were on the end of a 6-0 score line. I felt in this game that we had players who were overwhelmed by the occasion and did not deliver the kind of performance I know they are capable of. With a number of our injured players soon to return, I feel we will be more than capable of competing at this level. Here's hoping for a win in our first home game of the season. Marytn Day

Round One Review
The All Flags State League Division Two season finally got underway last week. League
favourites and newcomers to Saturday football Joondalup United got their league campaign
underway with a 2-0 win away to Kingsway Olympic. Goals either side of the break from
Adam Buckley and team captain Aaran Maplestone were enough to give Joondalup the
three points.
Forrestfield United made an early statement of intent by beating Balga 6-0. The first half
was an even affair, with both sides having chances to hit the lead before Jordan Hart put the
home side in front just before half time. Forrestfield dominated play in the second period,
Jason Godfrey made it 2-0 only minutes after the re-start. Trent Wood and Rhys Loxley then
went on to both score twice.
Quinns FC starting the season off well with a 4-3 win over Kelmscott Roos at Gumblossom
Park. The scorers for Quinns were Brian Cairney (2), Dom Elliot and Alex Sallery, while for
Kelmscott it was Christian Hogge, Joe Tomlin and Jonathan Ingram.
The surprise of the round was Ellenbrook United’s shock 4-3 win over Rockingham City.
Ellenbrook were 4-0 up until the 82nd minute when Rockingham, who had earlier had Sean
Brady sent off, got one back to make it 4-1. Two further goals in quick succession made it 4-
3 before Ellenbrook were just able to hang on for the win.
In other games, defending champions Joondalup City drew 1-1 with Curtin University, while
there were eight goals scored at Hilton Reserve, when Melville City defeated Fremantle
United 5-3.

Previous league games against Fremantle Utd
Fremantle United and Balga have met on eight previous league encounters,
with Balga only winning one of those, which was in 2002 with a 3-2 win. There
have only been two draws, with the black and whites winning the other five
encounters by fairly big margins, including the 8-1 thrashing here at Princess
Road Reserve back in 2005.
This will be our first league meeting in the Saturday competition, all previous
games have been contested in the Amateur League Premier or First Divisions.

The Fremantle United Soccer Club was founded in 1977 and joined the Amateur League in 1982. It made the Amateur Premier Division by 1986, and then became one of the strongest Amateur clubs in Western Australia, winning eight state amateur league titles, plus five amateur cups. The club then decided to join the Saturday State League Division Two competition in 2012.

1978
As this is our first year back in the Saturday league, it would be fitting for
today’s Balga flashback be the 1978 season, our very first year in the semi-
professional competition.
We were in the brand new SFWA Fourth Division, with nearly all of the teams
coming from the Amateur League the previous season. Balga along with
Graylands were the favourites to finish in the top two and gain promotion to
the Third Division (which would be called the Second Division in today’s State
League).
However, it wasn’t to be, and the club finished its first season in the SFWA
competition in mid-table. Balga were also knocked out in the Preliminary
Round of the State Cup, losing to Dianella JUST 5-1.
First team coach in 1978 was Dave Clarkson, Bill Munro was club President,
Jackie Carrick was secretary, while Trevor Allen was treasurer.
