Grandparents’ DayToday was one of the most enjoyable days of the School year. The children love their grandparents visiting their classrooms, sharing their learning, introducing their friends and teachers and doing special activities with these very important people in their lives. Thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to bake and serve a delicious morning tea for the grandparents.

Year 5 campYear 5 camp at Lake Ainsworth, near Lennox Head, was exciting! It was about twelve o’clock when we got there. We firstly had a tour of the camp grounds. We saw the cabins, toilets, and where some girls stayed. The rooms were called Beachside. We returned to the spot where we started, it was called ‘Spot X’. We also saw a place where we would do night activities and BMX riding. The night activity place was called ‘The Stadium’ where we did some cool activities. We could see the rock climbing wall outside of it. We walked to our rooms, the boys were next to each other and the girls were separated from the boys. When we unpacked we had to go the dining hall. We had lunch there before we split into our groups: Dugongs and Whales. I was in the Dugongs.

The activities over the next few days were: rock climbing, cookout, BMX riding, raft building, night games (one of my favourites), ultimate scissors/paper/rock and a county fair where we played games (like a fair) and we would earn “money” and we could spend it on other games. My favourite activity was raft building because we were in a team and we got to have a swim in the lake. Raft building was where we got some materials - two canoes, five pipes, lots of rope and oars.

Overall this camp was one of my favourite camps because we got to go on the beach and we got to swim in “Coca Cola Lake” I truly loved this camp.

Peer Support Next week, our Peer Support Program wraps up for another year. The Year 6 leaders have done an outstanding job of engaging students and promoting positive relationships with their group members. Students are looking forward to sharing their peer support experiences and reflections in the coming weeks.

Year 2Throughout the term, Year 2 have been investigating toys and the forces of push and pull through a series of fun experiments and hands-on activities. The students combined their knowledge of how things move and what they know about toys, then designed their very own using recycled materials. Here are a few of their entertaining creations.

“My toy is a jumping toy. Put it on the ground and push down on the end of the paddle pop stick. The force of your push will make it jump and turn in the air. It can also be used as a catapult.”

Tyler

“My toy rolls on it’s wheels when you push it. You can pull the ball back and then let it go. This will pull the toy forward and it will roll. I had fun making it.”

Ava

“My toy is a pig that you can pull along and play with. It also has a lead that you can also use to reel it in towards you. It slides on it’s belly.”

Emotional Resilience ProgramYear 4 students took part in an Emotional Resilience program at the Sunshine Avenue campus.

The goal of the Enhancing Emotional Resilience program is to teach coping skills to improve a child’s abilities to bounce back and face potential difficulties with confidence.

Leanne, a child psychologist from The Lakeside Rooms, ran four workshops with the students in Year 4 and demonstrated different strategies to support a child’s emotional resilience in school and at home.

Aggression through subtle means as well as controlling any angry feelings was discussed and how children can deal with those uncomfortable situations and remain calm, relaxed, confident and strong.

Children were then encouraged to talk more about how they are feeling at home and in school through a series of challenges that were sent home.

This was an excellent program that encouraged lots of discussion and deep thinking.

Early Learning CentreKindergartenKindergarten Swimming Program

Kindergarten students have been having a fantastic time in the pool. From Weeks 6 to 9 each Kindergarten class has been going to the Tweed pool twice a week for intensive swimming lessons. The students thoroughly enjoy their lessons and have really grown in confidence, developing and improving their skills. Next Tuesday is their final week and we will be practising rescue procedures. It has been an amazing experience for all the students and we are certainly ready for the FUN swimming carnival next term!

PreschoolFather’s Day - Preschool KoalasTo celebrate Father’s Day in the Preschool Koalas’ room, fathers were invited to spend time in the classroom after they attended the Big Boy’s Breakfast on Friday 28 August or the morning of Wednesday 2 September. On both days the students enjoyed spending time with the dads who could stay and play. Everyone was very excited to give their fathers the special card and gifts they had made.
