In planning for a successful reopening of school with a fully
virtual learning program, the BCSD Reopening Plan is grounded by
these core values and priorities:
B E D F O R D C I T Y S C H O O L D I S T R I C T
B C S D R e o p e n i n g P l a n | 2 0 2 0 / 2 0 2 1 - 4 -
Students will commit to a hybrid model of learning or to a fully
remote model of learning for the entire semester. Those committing
to the hybrid model will come to school based on their last name.
Students with last names beginning with A-L will attend every
Monday and Tuesday. Students with last names beginning with M-Z
will attend every Thursday and Friday for grades 4-12. Grades K-3
will attend school M, T, TH & F. There will be no change in
Preschool. Bearcat Wednesdays will be similar, allowing time for
student intervention and teacher planning. On the days students
will be learning from home, instruction will be a blend of live
streaming, synchronous and asynchronous learning. (See Curriculum
section)
Students must bring their district-issued Chromebooks to in-school
learning each day, fully charged, along with their charging cords.
These must then be taken home for at- home learning. Intermediate
and primary school students need to bring headphones and/or earbuds
daily. Students who need a Chromebook, or students who have an
issue with a Chromebook, should visit
chromebook.bedfordschools.org.
The district will continue to implement special education services
that are aligned with each student’s Individual Education Program
(IEP) and Distance Learning Plan (DLP) as we transition to a hybrid
instructional program.
Breakfast and lunch will continue to be provided for both in-person
and remote learners, and all students can eat for free for the
remainder of the school year. However, the Ohio Department of
Education is encouraging parents to submit free and reduced meal
applications so new enrollees and newly eligible students for the
meal program will be included in the EBT benefit. Also, fee waivers
are affected by applications.

As previously stated in the Overview section, students will commit
to a hybrid model of learning or to a fully remote model of
learning for the entire semester. No placement changes will be made
after a parent chooses to commit to either the hybrid or remote
learning model for the second semester.
Please know that if a student remains learning remotely, there have
been some changes and expectations to which s/he must adhere. The
same rules and consequences will apply for online learning as they
do in the school setting. They are as follows:
• Students MUST have their cameras on during instruction.
• Use a neutral, non-distracting backdrop or one of the options
provided through Google.
• Refrain from using your bed, bathroom, or other private locations
of your home for your virtual setting.
• Refrain from moving throughout your location with your
device.
• Have all supplies ready to go.
• Recording, taking screenshots, or taking digital images of your
instructor or peers is prohibited.
• Complete all work and assignments by established due dates.

Grades K-3 (there will be no change to Preschool) Students will
have two options for return to school in grades K-3:
• IN-PERSON (4 days per week in-person with a consistent teacher*
daily) OR
• 100% VIRTUAL (4 days of virtual instruction with a designated
teacher* per grade level, similar to the same format we are
currently implementing)
If students choose IN-PERSON, they will report to school for full
days of face-to- face instruction on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and
Friday. In the same respect, those students who opt to be 100%
virtual will interact four days a week as well with their
designated teacher with instruction looking similar to the current
model -- a mix of whole class and small group activities, both
synchronous and asynchronous, using Google Meet, GoGuardian and
SeeSaw.
Wednesdays will be similar to how they are now, with a portion of
the day devoted to teachers providing targeted interventions with
predetermined teacher-identified groups of students. The other half
of the day is set aside for teacher planning, training and
meetings.
Based on the previous parent commitment survey, we believe that we
will be able to accommodate safe distancing for the 4-day return of
those students wishing for in-person instruction. If the new parent
commitment survey indicates that more than approximately 50% of the
students want to come back to in-person learning, this plan may
have to be modified.
* Please note that students are not guaranteed the teacher with
whom they started the year. Class lists and student schedules will
be dependent upon survey results.

Grades 4-8 Students will have two options for return to school in
grades 4-8:
• HYBRID (2 days per week in-person; 2 days of live streaming)
OR
• 100% VIRTUAL (4 days of live streaming)
If students choose HYBRID, they will be in cohort groups, either in
person on Monday and Tuesday or on Thursday and Friday. On
students’ “remote” days, they will be expected to livestream into
the classroom. This will allow for all students to continue to
receive four days of instruction from, and contact with, the
teacher.
100% VIRTUAL students will be expected to connect to class daily
(Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) via livestream (Google Meet,
GoGuardian and Google Classroom).
Wednesdays will continue as previously described.
Curriculum
Grades 9-12 Students in grades 9-12 will have an additional option
for a total of three choices:
• HYBRID (2 days per week in-person; 2 days of live streaming)
OR
• 100% VIRTUAL (4 days of live streaming) OR
• 100% VIRTUAL PLATFORM (Edgenuity)
The first 2 options (HYBRID or 100% VIRTUAL) will be the same as
described for grades 4-8.
If they choose the 100% VIRTUAL PLATFORM option, students will
receive self-paced instruction via a learning platform, Edgenuity.
The Edgenuity students will have 24/7 access to course instruction
through the online platform and will have the option to communicate
with content area teachers for additional assistance daily between
the hours of 2:30-4:45 p.m. The current COMPASS Academy staff will
assume these additional students as part of their caseloads,
dependent on student course enrollments. Please note that some
courses may not be available through Edgenuity and students may be
provided with alternative options.

• A Quality Assurance Cleaning Program will be implemented,
including the use of additional high efficiency sanitizing
equipment and cleaning products. Buildings are being disinfected
every evening with electrostatic sprayers.
• Social Distancing will be enforced. Smaller class size ratios
will be implemented and the appropriate number of students per
square footage will help ensure social distancing. Floors will be
marked to indicate spacing.
• Students will have limited class-to-class transitions.
• Hand Sanitizer Stations have been installed at entrances and
throughout halls.
• Students and staff will be required to wear face masks.
• Daily student/staff health self-assessments will be required each

to those who return to in person learning. Daily health checks
include taking temperatures and assessing for symptoms. Anyone with
symptoms or a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher must stay
home.
• Any student who has been diagnosed with or is seeking a diagnosis
of COVID-19 must not report to school. The absence should be called
into the school with an explanation that the student has tested
positive for COVID-19, has been tested and is awaiting test
results, or is seeking diagnosis of COVID-19.
• Student and teacher plexiglass safety barriers have been
installed at necessary locations, including on teachers’ and
students’ desks. Note: Some students may be required to carry the
plexiglass safety shields from class-class.
• Students will have their own school supplies, as supplies will
not be shared.
• Students will bring their own water bottles. Existing drinking
fountains have been covered or removed, and additional refrigerated
water bottle fill stations have been installed.

and procedures will be implemented for students who are suspected
of having COVID-19 symptoms.
• Extra-curricular activities and athletic events will comply with
ODE, OHSAA and CDC guidelines.
• The district will make every effort to assist the Cuyahoga County
Board of Health with contact tracing and will notify parents if
their students have been in close contact with someone who has
tested positive for COVID-19.
• Adjustments will be made as needed to stay compliant with all
federal, state and local legislation and health department
directives to ensure the safety of students and staff.
• Bus riders will sit in only one seat per row, with the exception
of siblings who may sit together. Masks must be worn at all times
in school buses.
