Last week we met many of our new crop of Kindergarten students for 2020. This is an exciting time of the year as we start to plan for the next 12 months. It is always lovely to meet new families. Please remind children who cross Terence Street, the only place to cross is at the marked and supervised crossing. We had a near-miss yesterday with children darting across the road to their parents. Deputy Principal’s Message Congratualtions to 3M the class of the week at the 3-6 asembly last week and to 2L the class of the week at the K-2 assembly yesterday. Your excellent behaviour at assembly is something to be proud of!

Drop off and pick up Zones Many of you may have noticed the parking officers at our various school gates over last week. It is for everyone’s safety that we abide by the parking and pick up rules around the boundaries of the school. So that everyone is aware of their obligations in this respect I have included the Tansport for NSW brouchure on Drop off and Pick up Zone Safety Tips. Belair Language of Resilience The current resilience focus is: Control

The Control element fits in well with the use of the Catastrophe Scale. Kind regards, Kathie Colley

Bandfest Last week the Belair Beginner Band and Senior Band competed at Bandfest. These students have demonstrated high levels of commitment and discipline and worked incredibly hard this year to learn a new instrument or develop their existing musical ability. Many of the Beginner Band students were playing a musical instrument and performing on a stage for the first time. It was fantastic to see these students stepping out of their comfort zone and showing resilience even when nervous. The Beginner Band had 40 musicians and Senior Band 39 musicians performing on the day and their hard work paid off. They both gave outstanding performances and the Beginner Band were awarded 1st place and the Senior Band 2nd place. We would like to thank all our band families, instrument tutors and staff for the constant support you provide the children with throughout the year. A special thanks to our fabulous conductors Louise Gleeson (Beginner Band) and Graham Lamond (Senior Band), who always go above and beyond for our kids and our excellent helper Jocelyn Karsten for her support on Tuesday and at band rehearsals. Finally a BIG THANK YOU to our band members for your commitment and your discipline. As teachers there is nothing better than seeing the students we teach and guide every day face new learning challenges and grow as life-long learners. You have been given the chance to nurture the gift of music making and have put a smile on the faces of all the people who are lucky enough to hear the music you make. The band members are now looking forward to showcasing their talents at our Performing Arts Evening on Wednesday night and then performing at other up and coming school events. On Wednesday 6th November there will be an information sessionat 5.15pm in Mrs Bartel’s room for parents of Year 2 to 5 students who are considering trying out for the 2020 band program. The session will look at how the program is run and what is required from families and students in the program and we strongly encourage parents that have never been involved with the band program to come. Once again many thanks and happy banding! Mrs Bartel and Ms Loredo Band Coordinators

2020 school travel applications now open

To assist with any enquiries you may receive regarding student travel applications, we have provided some information below.

Applications for student travel in 2020 opened on Friday, 11 October 2019.

Students progressing to Year 3 and Year 7 no longer need to re-apply if they:

• are continuing at the same school • are residing at the same address • have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2019, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2020.

Year 3 Newcastle Excursion All of Year 3 went on an excursion on Wednesday 23rd October to the Newcastle Museum and the Nobby’s beach area. We enjoyed a lovely walk between both. On the day we had gorgeous weather and did lots of learning. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to join us on the day. A huge thank you to Hannah Ayton, Hayden Mason-Powell, Margaret Carmichael, Lee-Anne Marsh, Kaley Raine, Amy Schofield, Renae Slee, Renee Clarke, Elizabeth Kocon and Anna Reid for sharing your day with us.

My ultimate event of all time was the Year 3 excursion! We walked to the beach and I absolutely loved seeing the Supercars track being built. It was amazing! I was also in awe of the booming, loud, old and amazing plane that flew around the beach. It felt like it was 15 metres above us. Elias V

On Wednesday Year 3 went on an excursion. My two favourite parts were the coal show and playing with the science equipment at

the museum. At the coal show they explained how they made steel. Heloise D

We went on the excursion because we needed a break from class and we extended our knowledge about Newcastle and its history. At the museum, we went to the coal area first. I found a massive piece of coal. Jarryd R The BHP Steel show had really loud noises, it was exciting! Joel B

I spotted some dolphins in the harbour after lunch. Jasmin and I were counting all the animals we could see. There were over 30 dogs around the beach! Eadie Q There was lots of exhilarating parts of our day. We arrived at the museum just as the clock tower started to make

donging noises for ten o’clock. The parts that were definitely my favourites included going to the beach, hearing the cannons firing from Fort Scratchley and the big plane that flew by. April D In the Supernova exhibition at the Newcastle Museum we worked through a rope challenge. It was absolutely amazing! Caden T We did some drawing and sketching on the breakwall of the city, the lighthouse or the Stockton Bridge. The beach looked so beautiful to draw in front of the city. Chareti S

Knights Chess Competition Last Tuesday was the Knights Chess Competition at Marks Point Public School. As several of our players were at Bandfest, three reserve Knights players attended: Bronson B, Bailey T and Liam C.

Chris E attended as well as a regular Knights team member. All students did a fantastic job, particularly Bailey T who won every game! The boys are to be congratulated for their efforts on the day. Liam C was impressive winning two games at his first ever chess competition.

A huge thankyou to Mrs Carr who transported the students to Marks Point Public School.

Chess Club is on every Thursday lunch break (12:00-12:30) in the library.

Belair Bootcamp This Friday we will be holding our Belair Boot camp. This is our only major fundraising activity for school this year with funds going towards supporting our additional play opportunities including spare part play and nature play.

We ask that students seek sponsorship to complete as many laps as they can on our age appropriate boot camp circuit.

Students can bring money in with their sponsorship form before the event this Friday or alternatively bring in their form this Friday and collect the sponsorship donations after the event.

This is an out of uniform day with students to either wear sporting team or active wear clothes.

Please ensure all students are wearing joggers.

25 October 2019

Dear Belair Primary School families,

From 11 November 2019 St Nicholas OOSH will provide high-quality education and care, out of schools hours (OOSH), at St James Primary School, Kotara South. The service will be available to students between the ages of 5-12 attending St James Primary School, as well as neighbouring primary schools.

As an agency of the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle St Nicholas OOSH is committed to providing educationally sound and professionally staffed services that support family life. We have a great track record for delivering excellence in care and now operate in over nine locations across the Diocese.

To enable St Nicholas OOSH to commence operations from next month the current provider, YMCA is in the process of transitioning their operating licence to our organisation. We want to take this opportunity to thank YMCA management and staff, who for many years has provided care for students at St James Primary School.

St Nicholas OOSH and the YMCA have developed a partnership approach, to ensure a smooth transition for students currently enrolled in the OOSH service, their families and existing staff.

The operating hours (including vacation care), location, enrolment capacity and fees established under YMCA management, will remain in place for St Nicholas OOSH operations. St Nicholas OOSH complies with all national regulations and licensing requirements and is Child Care Subsidy approved, enabling parents and carers to apply for government- subsidised fee-support.

St Nicholas OOSH has been meeting with YMCA Kotara South staff, to inform them of the license transition and to offer them employment with St Nicholas OOSH.

St Nicholas OOSH, in partnership with YMCA, invites you to attend a parents and carers information evening at Belair Primary School (the gate for families to enter is in Carolyn Street), on Thursday 31 October at 6.30 pm. Staff from both organisations will be in attendance to share information regarding the transfer process and answer any questions you may have. RSVP is not required.

St Nicholas OOSH is committed to providing a welcoming environment where children and families are respected and actively encouraged to contribute their ideas for activities and learning experiences. If you have any questions about the transition process or St Nicholas OOSH and cannot make it to the information session, then please contact me. Otherwise, I hope to see you at the upcoming information session. In the interim, you may wish to check our website www. stnicholasoosh.org.au or look us up on Facebook or Instagram.

Kind Regards Tracey Sweetman General Operations Manager St Nicholas OOSH Mobile: 0499 015 502
