SAVE MONEY ON HEATING WITH ROTEX Whether you’re building a new house or refurbishing your existing one, include a heating system from ROTEX. We provide a complete solution combining underfloor heating with domestic hot water, assisted by solar power.

The system works by means of a heat pump which is the most efficient and economical way to heat up your house. The amount of energy you need to use is further reduced if you complement the system with ROTEX Solaris, providing free energy from the sun.

EFFICIENT APPLIANCESThe modern household uses a variety of appliances to perform several different daily functions, and today, the energy consumption of such appliances has been called into question – so much so that efficiency ratings and Energy Guide labels are utilised to help homeowners select the most efficient models of refrigerators, washing machines and everything in between.

apart from these ratings, certain features within appliances can also alert you to their efficiency. When it comes to washing machines for example, top-loading vertical axis machines are not as efficient as front loaders with a horizontal axis, both in terms of energy and water use. and when selecting a top-loading machine, you should also pay attention to the energy-saving features offered in temperature settings, rinse cycles, and load sizes. Meanwhile, refrigerators also have different efficiency rates according to features including defrosting, door style, and size. Top freezer models outperform side-by-side models in the efficiency stakes while partial automatic or manual defrost models are more efficient than fully automatic defrosters. as for dishwashers, many offer features that improve energy efficiency, including booster heaters and no-heat drying. It is also important to note how much water is required by each model when making your green selection.

ECO-FRIENDLY APERTURES One of the main things to keep in mind before purchasing apertures for your home is energy efficiency, as well as the different types, styles and treatments available. The main materials for apertures are generally wood, aluminium and PVC, each possessing advantages and disadvantages.

Wood apertures are traditional and attractive, and there are specific areas where MEPA encourages the use of timber apertures. However, while wood does not conduct cold or allow condensation, it can shrink, swell, or rot over time. aluminium, on the other hand, is virtually immune to moisture and rot, and is common due to its reasonable price. It is durable but perhaps not the best insulator, and the metal can expand and contract during temperature changes. Meanwhile, PVC apertures are another great option due to the low level of maintenance they require as well as their green credentials. High-quality PVC makes for a great insulator, resists condensation, and will not distort when exposed to extreme heat or cold.

Other factors to consider are energy-efficient solutions such as double or triple-glazed windows, which provide additional insulation and significant energy savings. another option is a thermal break or barrier, which reduces or prevents the flow of thermal energy and

GO GREEN AT HOMEas Malta sets out to achieve its 2020 energy goals of producing 10 per cent of its energy from renewable sources, Sarah Micallef explores the ways in which you can turn your home greener and more energy efficient.

SOLAR-HEATED POOLSIf you’ve got a pool that you like to enjoy during the winter months, you can significantly reduce swimming pool heating costs and effectively make it a lot greener by installing a solar pool heater. Price-wise, they are on a par with both gas and heat pump pool heaters, and boast low annual operating costs. Solar pool heating is considered the most cost-effective use of solar energy in a variety of climates, and works by pumping pool water through a filter followed by a solar collector, where it is heated before it is returned to the pool.

sound transmittance. Additionally, reflective film helps reduce glare and heat gain. Malta’s climate should also factor into your choice: pay attention to a window’s u-factor and SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) to determine how well it is insulated.

GREEN AIR CONDITIONING UNITS Cooling or heating your home using an air conditioning system need not be harmful to the environment, with green air conditioning becoming more widespread as ozone-depleting refrigerants are phased out in order to meet new government regulations. apart from the absence of these refrigerants, a number of technological innovations are also doing their bit to make aC units greener.

Such features that can help your home air-conditioning units’ green credentials include two-stage compressors which automatically compress less on cool days and more when in higher temperatures; customised systems based on a home’s individual heating and cooling needs; geothermal heat pumps which use the earth as a heat sink, capitalising

on the natural flow of heat; and programmable thermostats that allow you to program the thermostat to remain off when no one is at home and automatically turn it on when it’s time for you to return.

PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELS Photovoltaic systems use solar cells to capture the sun’s rays

and convert that energy into electricity. Installing such a system in your home allows you to generate electricity in a clean, reliable, and quiet way that can offset the cost of future electricity costs and decrease your dependence on the national energy grid.

as has been the case for a handful of years now, a new

photovoltaic grant scheme has once again been announced by Government for 2016. The grant covers 50 per cent of the total eligible expenditure up to a maximum of €2,300 or €757/kWp (whichever is the lowest). A feed-in tariff of 16.5c/kWh (capped at 1600kWh/kWp/year) will need to be guaranteed for six years, and payment of marginal cost (for exported electricity) will apply thereafter. The grant should really serve as a further boost for you to consider installing a PV system for a truly green home that makes a significant difference on your energy consumption.

SOLAR HEATINGSolar water heaters work double duty as an eco-friendly and cost-effective way to generate hot water for your home. These heaters work by converting sunlight into renewable energy for heating water using a solar thermal collector, comprising various technologies that are being increasingly used worldwide. While different types of solar heating systems are available, most are designed to deliver hot water to your home throughout the year – yet while the high levels of sunshine the

Maltese Islands are blessed with should guarantee hot water on the vast majority of days, in winter there sometimes may not be sufficient solar heat gain to deliver a steady supply of hot water. In this case, a supplementary gas or electric booster is recommended. BB

It’s common knowledge that local property prices are on the rise, and with a good portion of your budget blown towards getting the property of your dreams – be it for yourself or

as a future rental investment – the prospect of decorating can seem extra, daunting and expensive, but it doesn’t have to be.

The ever-popular trends of upcycling, shabby chic and a host of other DIY-focused activities for the home are promoting the reuse of old and cast-away items that can be obtained at a fraction of the price of brand new items. These trends have made it possible to spruce

up your home on a budget, and made it acceptable and heck, fashionable to save money without skimping on style.

However, while DIY is likely to save you a bunch of money, it is not the ultimate solution to decorating on a budget. In fact, it’s important for you to have the right skills, patience and interest necessary to start and finish a DIY project, as it could actually end up costing you more than if you had hired professionals to begin with. Figure out what you are and are not capable of doing, and if you find that this is not the route you want to take, look into alternatives. One of the

Don’t let a limited budget get in the way of achieving a great finish for your home. Martina said discusses some tips and tricks to help you get the best bang for your buck.

SMALL BUDGET, BIG DREAMS

HOMES

best and easiest ways to control costs is to keep things simple, which means choosing materials that tradesmen are familiar with and sticking to standard-sized fittings. The more complicated something is to lay, fit or cut, the more it’s going to cost you to get it installed.

With this in mind, here are some ways to achieve a tasteful and quality finish for your home without breaking the bank.

UPDATE EXISTING FURNITUREThe kitchen and bathrooms are the first rooms to be gutted of existing furniture and appliances once you start working on making a place your own. While I won’t argue with changing such necessities as toilets and sinks if they’re dated and no longer in good condition, you certainly can hold on to kitchen cabinets and worktops if they’re not in a dilapidated state. Get old and dingy cabinets, clean and treat them for stains and grime, and repaint them in a fresh and bright colour. and if you must replace the tiles, splashback or worktop, opt for a standard, hard-wearing and often cheaper option that you

know will last you longer than a pricey, statement piece.Giving a bathroom a facelift isn’t too difficult either – paint the walls and replace the tiles if necessary, but add fun and colourful accents through accessories and details that you can get for a bargain. Wicker baskets or containers are popular and pretty, and a repurposed vanity cabinet or upcycled mirror will save you money and give your bathroom an on-trend look.

HUNT FOR BARGAINSSocial media and Google have made bargain hunting a breeze compared to the old times, as plenty of pages and sites have been set up with the sole purpose of selling, exchanging or even simply getting rid of old furniture that would otherwise end up in a scrap yard. Visit charity shops, flea markets, bazaars, house auctions and online sites too, where you’re likely to come across great pieces of furniture at a decent price. and if you’re not happy with the way it looks, all you need to do is paint it, wax it or wrap it for an entirely new appearance.

If you know of family members, friends or acquaintances who are redecorating and getting rid of some items, organise a swap party and you just might bag yourself a fantastic bargain – an unloved item in your house might be just what your friends need for theirs. The same applies to obtaining pieces of fabric that might transform an old cushion, a torn armchair or even a seat cover. Visit the section of discounted materials at your nearest fabric shop or bazaar, and find out how much you can do with so little.

MIX AND MATCHMany houses of character nowadays are being transformed into modern marvels by combining old pieces with new ones, and this same mix-and-match style is a clever and cost-effective way of renovating and offsetting more expensive items with off-the-shelf or bargain buys. The kitchen and living room are two areas of the home where you can really get away with this technique. Cheaper units can be dressed up with high-quality handles or knobs, while an upcycled or discounted coffee table can be adorned with a beautiful centrepiece.

INSTANT IMPACTWallpaper is becoming a popular choice for Maltese homes, but rather than covering an entire room, try it on one wall to add interest to an area of the room and draw the eye to a particular aspect of it. It’s a small and relatively inexpensive option, but will make a dramatic difference to your space.

also, do not underestimate the power of a tester pot of paint. Save money and avoid buying litres of paint if all you’re looking to do is upgrade a chair, a small table or a bookcase, and you’d be amazed by how one, eye-catching coloured item can add interest to any room. Source an old rocking chair from a charity shop or paint a door in your home that you reckon is looking tired and old, and spruce it up with an on-trend colour and good finish. If you can’t tell the difference between paints and finishes, primers and waxes, ask your local ironmonger for advice. BB

RENOVATING FOR RESALEThose who are looking to improve a space with the intention of re-selling it or renting it out can do so with a relatively modest budget. This trend is on the rise both locally and overseas, and one can choose to spend as little as €5,000 or as much as €15,000 to improve and redecorate a property, depending on your target buyer and its size.

If you’re considering buying property for this purpose, be sure to do your homework before – be choosy in terms of location, size, the age of the building and how much work and money the project requires as, in the end, you want to guarantee a return on your investment.

You’ve been counting down the days for months, and the excitement has

reached fever pitch now that it’s finally time to jet off on your long-awaited summer holiday! Your bags packed and passport in hand, you make your way to the airport and check in. Ooh, the gates are open, it’s time to go! and as you walk over to the plane, you can’t resist snapping a photo. You open your Facebook app on your smartphone and post it, along with a teasing caption: ‘and we’re off! See you in a week Malta!’While this all might seem like a bit of harmless fun, that

one status or photo could be enough to put your home at risk. While your friends may wish you well, social media posts may easily fall into the wrong hands, leaving you inadvertently alerting potential thieves that your home will be left unattended for a certain amount of time. The risk is a real one, so much so that Matthew Formosa from JF Security & Consultancy Services advises against ‘advertising’ your holiday on Facebook entirely.

But that’s not the only precaution you can take when it comes to burglar-proofing your home this summer. Of the services offered at JF Security

& Consultancy, Mr Formosa highlights CCTV monitoring, alarm monitoring hooked up to their 24-hour control room and patrol visits as options you may wish to consider. Particularly when you’re away on holiday, he maintains, “installing an alarm and hooking it up to our 24-hour control room is your best option. However, we could also offer patrolman services that carry out random inspections while you’re abroad.” This is ideal if you don’t have a family member or friend you can trust to keep an eye on your home while you’re away.

a security system can also come in very handy on a day-

to-day basis too – particularly now that summer is upon us, bringing with it all manner of events and occasions that have us spending far more time out of the house than in it. If you’re a first-time home owner, taking into account all the expenses that come with setting up a new house, installing a security system might seem like an unnecessary luxury, but things like an intruder alarm should not be seen as extras. In the long run, they can make all the difference.

Meanwhile, Mr Formosa has some further words of advice to help homeowners keep their home as safe as possible. “alarms are your biggest help,

but you would also do well to ensure you utilise proper locks. Don’t entrust keys with everyone, and install metal bars and safes where appropriate,” he advises.

a common misconception is falling into the trap of thinking nothing will ever happen to you or your home, but this will only make it all the more devastating if something indeed were to happen. Contrary to popular belief, protecting your home against intruders and break-ins needn’t cost an arm and a leg, and is certainly a worthwhile investment into keeping your property and belongings truly safe, while you’re abroad or otherwise. SECURING YOUR HOME THIS SUMMER

When Philip attard Sr founded attrans in 1976, he

was one of the first Maltese who reformed overland driving into a commercial activity. Mr attard started off as a sole trader who would import machinery and vehicles from the united Kingdom, drive them to southern Italy and ship them on the only ‘ro-ro’ service available at that time. after a few of these trips, other local importers began to approach him, primarily to move their cargo from North Italy and united Kingdom to Malta. In a short while, attrans was recognised as a 100 per cent privately-owned Maltese transport company. Since then, the company has established itself as a fully-fledged international transport operator, now in its second generation, under the stewardship of Philip attard Jr. and while it now boasts a diverse and multicultural workforce based in Malta as well as overseas, many of the company’s employees have been with the company for decades – some since its very foundation.

Sales and Business Development Manager Kevin Filletti explains that the firm’s primary business is international transport, covering imports and exports to and from any European destination, as well as Morocco, algeria and Tunisia. “attrans specialises in both groupage and full load movements tailored to our clients’ needs. Whether is it normal road cargo, oversized cargo, hazardous or refrigerated freight, our network of European consolidation hubs will be able to deliver the shipment to or from anywhere in the world, including the

united States, the Middle East and asia. Better yet, this service is offered on a weekly basis.”The organisation prides itself on controlling a constant flow of vehicles from all countries it operates in. “We believe that attrans are market leaders due to the knowledge and commitment of our planners, operational staff and drivers, combined with years of experience. We have been successful in dealing with several shipping matters locally and in foreign countries too, namely Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Spain and the uK. For this reason, we believe that attrans offers

the best available transport services on the island,” Mr Filletti says. “Our trailers are built specifically in our workshops, by varying internal heights and fittings. Our services were always tailor-made to the customers’ needs and that is why we can provide our customers with service that is second-to-none. Besides our overseas offices, which support our domestic brand, attrans is also offering services to and from North africa, as well as East-to-West Europe. We also offer a road service from the Netherlands to Iran. Our intention is to continue investing in our own offices and

gradually increasing attrans’ network in Europe.”

attrans faced a tough challenge a few years ago when it faced the possibility of losing its largest account due to competition from container service. However, they did not let this faze them, but rather, used the challenge as a push to diversify and expand. “We set up various offices in Holland, Italy and Slovenia, thus spreading our risks and most of all tying in a cluster of clients which produce or trade in the Med and North Europe, leading to our continuous growth in Morocco and Tunisia especially. We now not only have attrans BV and attrans Italia, but also attrans North africa and attrans Slovenia, all diverse in their activities but all performing under the attrans brand. all have been instrumental in placing attrans as one of only a few transport companies which connect North africa, Central Europe, Turkey and lately Iran through a network which evolved from a small transport company originating in Malta.” BB

17INTERVIEW

onathan abel is one person who is proudly doing what he loves most: working on radio. “I absolutely loved

listening to the radio when I was in my early teens, and found it unpredictable when compared to a cassette or CD of my favourite tunes, where I obviously knew what was coming next. Plus, I really wanted to be the guy behind the desk taking all those technical decisions and playing around with those faders and knobs!”

“When I was in my twenties, I had been hosting a weekend show for about five years and, in the meantime, graduated as a physics and maths teacher at De La Salle College, the same school I used to attend. Then, in December 2003, the breakfast show spot opened up at the station I was working at and I was offered the job. It was a huge dilemma – should I leave all my students and friends at De La Salle half way through the scholastic year to plunge into this venture? It wasn’t easy but I just followed my heart and went for it. I had wanted a show of that sort for so long and knew the opportunity wouldn’t present itself again. Timing is everything!”

Nowadays his breakfast show, the Morning Vibe on Vibe FM, wakes his listeners up with plenty of on-air hilarity, accompanied by his co-hosts. “Radio is everywhere, and no matter how advanced technology gets, there’s nothing more spontaneous, intimate or popular as it is. It’s a natural choice for the majority of people. However, we constantly work to ‘up’ production levels and to keep our listeners engaged,” he says. “It must be working, as the Morning Vibe has been confirmed as the top breakfast show on the island.”

“Keeping it up there is the challenge, of course. I’d like to think that I do that by producing crazy moments on air such as offering a dream job in radio as a reward to someone who eventually became my future co-host, handing out big cash prizes daily for the past 12 years or so, giving out flight tickets to the MTV VMas or to watch Rihanna live in concert… I also halted traffic in St Julian’s once – simply because I walked on the beach in Borat’s swimming costume in February!”

Jonathan says that John Bundy was the DJ he followed on air most during his teenage years. “He got me hooked on radio and inspired me to work towards becoming a DJ too. Since then, my work with station manager and producer Terry Farrugia has taught me everything about the job over the last 16 years. Our excitement for radio just converged. We live it.” His dream DJ collaboration would be with Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike – “a Belgian-Greek DJ and record producer duo composed of brothers Dimitri Thivaios and Michael Thivaios.

They currently hold the number one spot on DJ Mag.”

When he’s not on the air, Jonathan spends his downtime reading, watching documentaries, jogging or simply meditating by the sea. He is also an extremely dedicated dad to his six-year-old daughter Nia. “My day is a lot longer and more demanding since she came along, especially since I’m now separated. But I wouldn’t change a thing,” he smiles. “I have a formula that works:

Dad and radio DJ Jonathan Abel is one of the most well-known voices on the Maltese airwaves, waking us up with lots of laughs. Here he talks to Jo Caruana about his daughter Nia, the intimacy of radio and stopping traffic in Borat’s swimsuit.

THERE’S STILL TIME TO ENROLL YOUR CHILD IN ONE OF MALTA’S BEST SUMMER CLUBS

The aim of the Sports 4 Kids Summer Club for boys and girls between the ages of six and 12 years is to expose them to a varied programme of both indoor and outdoor sports disciplines, combined with arts, crafts and cooking. This keeps their bodies busy and their imagination alive.

The summer club is held at St Dorothy’s School, located on the outskirts of Zebbug on the new Mdina Road and is easily

accessible from all areas, with a large car park available for pick-up and drop-off. Children from different schools unite within different groups, according to their age, and participate in all the sports activities during the seven weeks of summer between the 11th July and the 2nd September. One can choose between a three-day programme or a full week programme. The school employs qualified coaches and instructors who work hard to

introduce to the children the basic rules, playing methods and fundamentals.

The school timetable is devised so that each child over the age of six attending the Summer Club will have a minimum of one swimming session every day. Other sport activities include badminton, hockey, martial arts, football, basketball, team building and life skills. We also hold arts, crafts and cooking sessions, which are important to give children a hands-on experience, and encourage them to experiment creatively. activities start daily at 8.30am and keep on going until 12.30pm with three different 70-minute sessions each day and a 30-minute mid-morning break.

Early morning supervision and afternoon supervision is also offered. Door-to-door minibus transport is provided to any part of the island (conditions apply). Special outings will be held during the summer club programme, where children

of different ages will go to the National aquarium, Noah’s ark, Popeye Village, bowling and many other places.

at the end we will also invite all parents to attend our open days so that they can watch their children participate in

various activities. The open days will be held on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd September during school hours.

YOUR FAVOURITE HAIR FUDGE, IMPROVED Get some flexible style to your head with firm hold Matte Hed Extra. Your favourite hair fudge now comes with something extra – extra hold and an extra dry finish! Work through your hair for definition and movement with extreme matte texture. The end result is flexible and effortless, with a natural finish for a raw edge. SLEEK, FUSS-FREE SUMMER HAIRMany of us have hair which tends to frizz up during summer, especially if we’re often by the sea or pool. It’s hardly healthy to keep straightening and blow-drying hair over and over again. Not only is it a waste of effort because it’s so humid, it also causes extra damage to your hair because there’s more heat present in the atmosphere during summer. So what can we do?

First of all, whether you have straight or curly hair, you need to invest in shampoos and conditioners with moisturising ingredients to replace the moisture that is lost due to the heat. Shampoos and conditioners made from olive oil, macadamia nut and argan oil extract have enhanced hydration properties and will help keep your hair supple and mobile. a good anti-frizz serum will prevent fly-aways and tame hair that just won’t sit down. Make sure you don’t over-oil, otherwise your hair will end up looking greasy and crispy at the same time – not a

good look. additionally, a good leave-in conditioner after swimming will save you from a lot of long-term damage caused by sun, salt and chlorine.

You might also want to look into having a keratin treatment done at your salon. Keratin is naturally found in hair, and keratin treatments put the protein, which can be lost due to age and chemical services, back into the hair, making it shinier, less frizzy and easier to style. Since the solution takes time to work, you shouldn't wash your hair for three or four days after getting the treatment. To make sure the frizz doesn’t come back prematurely, make sure your shampoos are sulphate-free and stay away from beach sprays – they’re often packed with sulphates and salts, and will cancel out the effects of the treatment faster than you can say ‘beach hair’. Hair that has undergone a keratin treatment which is then carefully maintained can be expected to remain frizz-free for up to three months.

It’s the season for festivals, parties, holidays, beachside barbeques and generally having a good time, so the weather shouldn’t be the only thing that’s hot. Marie-Claire grima finds out how to look your best with the minimum amount of effort.

NAIL THAT LOOKSummer is the most fun season for nail colours. Getting a tan sets off most colours beautifully, so get rocking those hot pink, coral or emerald shades – the perfect complement for your cocktail Instagram shots! Bright shades are also being used to give a zesty twist to the classic French mani – a bold stripe instead of the demure white tip. However, if you’re not a fan of bright shades, you’ll be happy to know that nudes and neutrals are very much in vogue too. During the spring-summer 2016 fashion week in Milan, the most eye-catching design was a taupe base finished with a sleek black line from cuticle to tip.

If you’re an acrylics devotee or have long, strong natural nails, the it-shape of the moment is no longer the ‘coffin’ but the ‘squoval’ – basically, a square-shaped nail with rounded off edges, as seen on Kylie Jenner and other assorted Kardashians. They’re more practical and less dangerous than pointy nails, but still long and tapered enough to look glam.

BROWSE THESE BROWSThankfully, the days where we would pluck our brows into skinny, barely-existent strings are long gone, and everyone knows the importance of a pair of solid, well-groomed eyebrows. Not only do they frame your face, but they are also the basis of most of your facial expressions – which is why people who over-pluck their eyebrows into unnatural arches tend to look permanently surprised. Poorly-maintained eyebrows can make you look tired and much older than you really are, while a pair of beautifully-kept brows will rejuvenate your face and take years off you.

To give your eyebrows an extra boost, you may be interested in HD brows – a seven-step eyebrow shaping treatment that focuses on the design and maintenance of your eyebrows. Most of the celebrities who have envy-inducing eyebrows have done it. Brows are tailored to each person’s face, overall look and even personality – if the super-bold eyebrow trend isn’t up your alley, you don’t have to choose that. They can be made dark or light, thick or slender and sharp or soft.

Getting HD brows involves a combination of techniques, including tinting, waxing and threading. Even over-plucked brows can benefit from the HD treatment – your beautician will be able to advise you on a regrowth programme that will help your brows get back into shape over a course of visits. They will also teach you how to enhance and keep up your brows between one salon visit and another.

MAKE IT UP AS YOU GONobody wants to feel foundation sliding down the sides of their face and getting their pretty maxi-dresses stained orange, so summer make-up has to be as light, breezy and melt-proof as possible. Embrace the natural look by skipping the base entirely and hiding any shadows, spots, or blemishes with just concealer – this way, you won't have to worry about blotting away your make-up and excess oils. You will probably want to buy concealer that’s a few shades darker than your ordinary concealer, since many of us will be out in the sun more often and are likely to tan. If you’re not comfortable going completely nude, go

with a tinted moisturiser which will protect your skin and nourish it while covering up any imperfections.

To keep minimal summer make-up glowing, you can incorporate light-catching highlights into your make-up routine. Blend a touch of liquid highlighter on the tops of the cheekbones and brow bones and down the bridge of the nose – however, don’t go all the way down to the tip of your nose as that will just make you

look like you’re experiencing a surfeit of oil. If you’re a fan of the smoky eye, simply switch your eye shadow palette from charcoal to bronze for a sultry look that still screams summer. Don’t forget to go with a waterproof mascara to top it all off – not only will it last long and save you from the dreaded ‘panda eyes’ look when you’re coming out of the pool, but it will also prevent mascara dripping into your eyes when you’re particularly sweaty. FOOTBALL

SANDRO MICALLEFTVM sports journalist, General secretary Malta sports Journalists Association “Germany are favourites to win this year’s edition and I think they have the strongest starting line-up. With the likes of Neuer, Boateng, Hummels, Can, Khedira, Draxler, Özil, Schürrle and Müller as the backbone of the team, I find it very difficult to see Joachim Löw’s team failing to make it at least to the final. That said, I will continue to support Italy, as I have done since I was young.”

“a player I particularly admire is Poland’s Robert Lewandowski. although I usually tend to like more defensive-minded players rather than strikers, this June I will be following him closely. He is always keen to get involved in the build-up of the attack, and most importantly, he is not selfish in the box, but lethal when it comes to get a shot at goal. Simply a complete striker.”

“Belgium’s coach Marc Wilmots is a mastermind. Even though

Belgium will not be able to field Vincent Kompany, I still believe that they will be the smartest in Group E and start as favourites to progress for the Knock Out stage as group winners ahead of Italy.”

LARA SEYCHELLFreelance sports journalist “I was born into a family of England supporters so I grew up siding with England, but in 2003 I fell in love with aC Milan and started supporting Italy. Nowadays, I’m not that bothered about the Italian team – it has loads of Juventus players and I can never side with them! Since moving to the uK, I’ve started following the football here again. Jamie Vardy’s story is an incredible one, especially with what he’s achieved with Leicester City. I’m sure he’ll do well in the Euros too, and it would be nice to see England lifting the cup.”

“The 2004 edition was the most memorable for me. I was siding with Portugal in the final but Greece ended up winning. It was a crazy match! I think

Germany will do well due to the strength of their line-up in this edition, but Spain has the smartest strategy. When you add that to the top quality players they have, it makes their football beautiful to watch and tactically astounding.”

CHRISTIAN MICALLEFnet TV sports journalist, replay presenter“I side with Italy and have been supporting this team since I was young, but they’re clearly not favourites to win this year’s Euros. I think Germany will make it till the end – they are full of talent and are poised to add the European title, following their World Cup victory. I highly admire their mentor Joachim Löw too. However, England just might surprise everyone!”

“My favourite player is Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. I consider him as a history maker and the greatest goalkeeper of all time. I had the privilege to interview him twice. He is a champion on and off the pitch!”

SHONA zAMMITHibernians midfielder“My all-time favourite team is Germany. I am a huge fan of Bastian Schweinsteiger – I play in the same position as he does, and I try to take a lot from watching him. To me, he defines what football is all about, and his style of play and overall teamwork are incredible.“

“In my opinion, Belgium have a very good setup that starts from their youngsters and keeps on going to their senior team. In fact, they are currently ranked fifth in the world, above big teams like Italy and Russia. They started working on and building from their grassroots about seven years ago and as a result, they are now producing some really promising players.”

“The two most likely teams to win this edition are France or Germany – they have many renowned players who will lead their country through the stages and eventually into the finals. That said, when it comes to football, anything

can happen and that’s the real beauty of it!”

RACHEL CUSCHIERIApollon Limassol midfielder “England is my favourite team as I support Liverpool FC. I particularly admire former captain Stephen Gerrard as he always showed passion and dedication towards the team and his mates. However, France has a very strong line-up, thanks to players such as Pogba, Payet, Evra and Griezmann to name but a few. On the other hand, Germany has the smartest strategy. They are very sharp and consistent, and many of their players are versatile and can be played in many different positions. “

“I was particularly struck by the performance given by the Greek team back in 2004. This is because Greece was considered unable to win but indeed they did. It just proves that any team participating has a chance to win especially at these times when football is so unpredictable.” BB
