Beth Israel – The West Temple
BULLETINDecember 2019, Kislev – Tevet 5780
from the Rabbi's Desk...
Hanu… Channu… Chanukah
In her book, How to Spell Chanukah… and Other Holiday Dilemmas, Emily Franklin has collected stories from eighteen writers sharing their re flections and memories on how they celebrate Chanukah. The essays are comedic, edgy, poignant, poetic and more. “As many ways as there are to spell the holiday, so are there ways to enjoy, anticipate, loathe, and love the festival of lights.” Some quotable quotes include:
• “What a holiday! No pestilence, no slavery, no locusts, no cattle disease, or atonement.” Joshua Braff
• “It would surely be easier for us, as modern Jews – fully assimilated! credit-approved! – to disavow the tangled skein of our history. Chanukah schmanukah, we might say…” – Steve Almond
• “Since I grew up in Manhattan… fellow Jews gasp in horror when I tell them I have spent every Chanukah since birth in Idaho… Can you import this holiday from loxland to landlocked Idaho? I have learned that you can…” – Jill Kargman
• “The menorah moved to the old yellow bookcase in the foyer, the first thing visitors see when they enter our apartment – the first thing we see when we come home.” – Joanna Smith Rakoff
• “The candles are lit, the songs sung, and the frenzy is underway. ‘Presents!’ my sons shriek… To my writerly embarrassment, my older son is of the belief that books do not count as presents…” – Tova Mirvis
• “It was my first Chanukah as a father, my first Chanukah without a father.” – Adam Langer
continued on p. 2.
December 2019 Beth Israel – The West Temple 2
continued from p. 1.
And what is your quote? If you were to share a Chanukah memory (old or new), what would come to light? We light the candles, tell the story, enjoy foods and games… and, okay, presents, too. We could easily let it slide, but we don’t. We could easily not go into our child’s classroom with dreidels and donuts, but we do. We could easily use an app on our phone to “light” a new candle each night, but instead we set up our menorah and enjoy the glow (and the warmth) of the candles… and family and friends.
First candle is lit on Sunday evening, December 22nd this year. May your Chanukah (no matter how you spell it) be light-filled, may your donuts be jelly-filled, and may the memories you make be joy-filled.
Chag Urim Sameyach – Wishes to you for a joyous festival of lights,

It can be used to pay dues, event tickets or any other temple charges from an app on your phone. Venmo is data secure and is no cost to you. Venmo address is: @bitwt

news from Circle of Friends—the Women's Rosh Chodesh Group of BI-TWT...
October's Get-Together: Love of Books!
Eileen Kollins volunteered to host our first Circle of Friends of the year at her very warm and lovely home in The Village, the evening of Wednesday, October 30th. Our west siders happily carpooled to Eileen’s home on the east side, but the high point of our evening was that the location made it possible for Alice Marks, who now lives at Wiggins, and Rhoda Rosen, who now resides at Stone Gardens, to join us. Both had regularly attended Circle of Friends, often hosting our meetings. It was such a treat to have them with us again. Lots of conversation and catching up to do – it was hard to move on to our program.
Love of Books! Rabbi led us in a short service to celebrate Rosh
Chodesh Cheshvan, and then everyone shared a book or film that they
wanted the others to know about. Attached is our list from the evening.
This is a favorite program, and we hope you find some interesting things
to engage your mind and inspire your soul. (Pictures courtesy of Susan
Wagner and Barbara Schwarz.)

Celebrate a Winter “Soulstice” and Mitzvah-making!
Our next program will be Thursday, December 19 , 7:00 – 9:30 PM, in Ratner Hall at
Beth Israel . We’ll be creating no-sew fleece blankets that we will donate to those living in shelters.
Also, please bring socks, gloves, hats, etc. - we are hearing that it will be a very cold winter, and these,
along with the blankets, will be helpful to the people who receive them. Please bring some snacks to
share and a pair of sharp scissors (with your name on them). This is a great activity for all ages, so bring
your daughters, aunts, mothers, grandmothers, and friends to share in this mitzvah and winter
celebration.
Please call Barbara Schwartz to let us know you are coming and if you need a ride. Contact Barbara by email: [email protected] or call H: 216-228-5246 or call or text cell: 216-973-2489.

Book and Film Recommendations:
Eileen Kollins – All the Rivers by Dorit Rabinyam. This is a novel by an Israeli author about a love affair between an Israeli writer and a Palestinian artist. In 1915, the Israeli Ministry of Education banned the book from schools, making it not just a popular book, but a best seller in a backlash against the right’s attempt to limit free speech.
Margie Ordog – People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. This is a book of historical fiction about the real Sarajevo Haggadah, a book that has survived over five centuries and was hidden from the Nazis. The story is about the fictional Dr. Hannah Heath, who comes to restore the book and recreates its history.
Margie’s second recommendation – The Badass Librarians of Timbuktu
and Their Race to Save the World’s Most Precious Manuscripts by Joshua Hammer. This tells the story of brave librarians rescuing 377,000 ancient manuscripts that Al Qaeda would have destroyed.
Deb Girard (and Susan Wagner) – The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris. This is a work of historical fiction, based on the true-life story of Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew deported to Auschwitz. He became the tattooist and was able to save others and the young woman he fell in love with. Both survived, finding each other after the war, got married, and moved to Australia. He told his story to the author before his death at 90 in 2006.
Susan Wagner – The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. This is a historical novel based on the true story of a female spy network which took place during World War I.
(continued on p. 10)
Table of Contents
December 2019 Beth Israel – The West Temple 10
Rhoda Rosen – Go High: The Unstoppable Presence and Poise of Michelle, edited by M. Sweeney. A collection of photographs and inspirational quotes of the former First Lady.
Rhoda also recommended - Hugs Obama: A Photographic Look Back at the Warmth and Wisdom
of President Barack Obama, edited by M. Sweeney. Photographs and quotes celebrating President Obama’s warmth and compassion. Rhoda read to us a couple of quotes from the book, which resonated with our Jewish values. “We may not be able to stop all evil in the world, but I know that how we treat one another is entirely up to us,” and “The arc of the universe may bend toward justice, but it doesn’t bend on its own.”
Jessica Sackett – The Bookshop of the Broken Hearted by Robert Hillman. This novel takes place in Australia and follows the relationship of Tom, a farmer, and Hannah, a survivor of Auschwitz, who opens a bookshop.
Shosh Ault – The Dove Keepers by Alice Hoffman. The human stories of the zealots on Masada during the siege by the Roman Empire.
Barbara Schwartz – Educated by Tara Westover. The author describes her life being raised in an abusive survivalist family in the Idaho mountains. She did not attend school until the age of 17, and although she had taught herself math and grammar, she realized she knew little about the world. She eventually went to Harvard and Cambridge. She clearly articulates the pull of her family and the grief of separating herself from them.
Barbara also recommended the documentary, Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War, aired on PBS. This is about a couple, Waitstill Sharp, a Unitarian minister and his wife Martha, a social worker. They were sent to Europe by their church in February, 1939,
leaving their children in the care of their parish, to carry out dangerous rescue missions. They were honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations.
Rabbi Enid – Wayfinding: The Science and Mystery of How Humans Navigate the World by M.R. O’Connor. Written by a journalist, she investigates how our ancestors navigated the world pre-technology and how this has affected our human development. Rabbi says she looks forward to thinking about how our Jewish values help us navigate our world.
Hope these recommendations do not increase the pile of books on your nightstand to a dangerous height, but we hope you find wonderful things to read. I will also share some words of wisdom passed on by Eileen Kollins for those who feel they “must” finish a book: Time is short, so if you subtract your age from 100, the remainder is the number of pages you should read. If you reach that point and the book has not engaged you, you have The Librarian’s permission to stop and move on to something else.

December 2019 Beth Israel – The West Temple 11
from the Social Action Committee...
Beth Israel–The West Temple has been busy with social action learning and activities in the last few months! Thanks to all of the people who have volunteered and made donations to support these projects.
In October, temple member Erin Huber made a presentation to the religious school and adult learners about the amazing work Drink Local Drink Tap is doing locally and internationally under Erin's leadership. This educational opportunity will lead up to a variety of water-focused projects including a beach clean-up this spring. On November 24, Barbara Feldmar led a discussion with congregants interested in being part of a BI-TWT "Green Team" to plan other activities related to climate change and the environment. If you are interested in volunteering with environmental projects, please contact Barbara at [email protected].
Beth Israel - The West Temple was also recently awarded a mini-grant in the amount of $5,000 from the Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus Initiative for Immigrant and Refugee Justice at the Religious Action Center. This mini-grant will amplify the efforts our members have been dedicated to and advocating for with Cleveland's immigrant and refugee communities. With this grant, the Beth Israel high school class and social action committee plans to partner with local immigrant-serving organizations to get resources to families in need and to advocate for policies that welcome refugees and immigrants into our community. As a first step, Beth Israel's high school class partnered with the teen group from the Turkish Cultural Center to provide over 100 snack and hygiene kits for people impacted by immigration and detention traveling through Ohio (see pictures on the next page).. As part of the project, leaders from the InterReligious Task Force joined the students to discuss how immigration policy impacts families and teens here and abroad. Future plans for this immigration work include education, advocacy, and service actions. If you are interested in being part of a congregational team to plan activities related to this grant, please email Judy Wright, Social Action Chair, at [email protected] to get involved.
Keep an eye out for additional projects and programs in the coming months. As always, if you have ideas about social action activities you'd like the congregation to do, please reach out and let us know!
