Bethel's Mission

To Gather, Grow, and Go!

The month of March brings many changes our way. The last gasps of win-ter start to fade, and signs of spring begin to manifest itself. Daylight Sav-ings Time returns ushering in longer light to brighten our evenings and tu-lips and daffodils begin pushing up from our gardens bringing a hopeful sign of a new growing season soon to arrive. It is a month filled with hopefulness.

In our church life, March opens with us in the midst of our Lenten journey to the Cross and comes to a close with us celebrating the Easter promise of Resurrection. As followers of Jesus, Easter is the feast of feasts. The Eastern Orthodox liturgy for Easter provides us with a powerful image. Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and bestow-ing life on those in the tombs. Just think of that: “trampling down death by death.” By his death Christ has destroyed death, and by his rising to life he has brought renewed life to all the faithful.

I find the traditional icon of the resurrection an extraordinary image. Christ is depicted as rising from the tomb victorious; the grave covers are smashed and askew. Christ is reaching down into the darkness of chaos and death and brings up the dead. The promise for us is that from that darkness we, too, will be raised.

This month, Pastor Ray and I both urge you to remain steadfast in your Lenten disciplines, by prayer, by attending mid-week and Sunday worship and also by attending Holy Week worship. Because while we will ulti-mately reach Easter joy at the end of the month, we enter this month still on the journey and we cannot celebrate Easter without first encountering Good Friday.

May the month of March be a month filled with the hope and expectation of God’s promises of new life!

Blessings, Pastor Wise

Hunger When I worked at the food pantry the first Tuesday in February, three people stayed in mind. One was a lady who had never been to a food pantry. She was telling me that she had lost her job and had just started a new job. She had not received a check yet for her new job and was running out of food for her kids. She was very grateful for what she got. The second lady was there with her daughter. They had never been to the Westside pantry. She was in a wheel chair, and they had come by COTA Mainstream bus service. They were so appreciative. The mother kept thanking me. She said that they live on $1000 month and get $16 a month in food stamps. Their rent is not subsidized and by the time they pay their bills, there is very little left for food. They were so grateful. I started thinking of how I would live on $1000 a month paying full rent. It would be a challenge.

The third lady, around 70 years old, came for the fresh produce with her little red wagon to carry home her items. She said that she has no other transportation than walking or taking the bus. She was walking about 8 blocks. She also was sharing that her arm only lifts so high because of a bro-ken arm she suffered last year. She went to the emergency room and from there she was to see an orthopedic doctor. She had to choose from the ones on the Westside that she could get to by bus and that were on her insurance plan. She had to wait 5 weeks to get in for an appointment. By the time she got there, it was healing incorrectly. Her choices were to have it broken again or live with it. She chose to live with it. All are God’s children and all have their own story. Your contribu-tions make a difference.

Breaking Bread at Bethel The meal is on the third Saturday of the month from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. for anyone in the community

who would like a good free meal or a chance to meet others in the community for fellowship. Our next

meal will be March 19. We will be serving fried catfish, macaroni & cheese, baked beans, coleslaw,

cupcakes and coffee, milk, and juice. If you have questions, contact Kathy Papic at 313-9492. Thanks to

all who help and donate food!

Sheep Are Coming During March and Lent, we will be collecting donations to pur-

chase sheep for ELCA Lutheran World Hunger. It costs the organi-

zation $125 to purchase and get a sheep to the intended family. The

warm durable sheep’s wool creates a world of opportunity for a

family struggling with hunger and poverty. Wool can be woven into

hats, sweaters, coats, and blankets to be sold or used. There will be

collection boxes available as well as a poster to show our progress.

First Friday will be Friday, March 4 at 11:30. Pastor Ray will dis-cuss the connection between Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter. For more information and to RSVP, you can contact Ellen Paoletti at home, 649-7845, cell 327-5722, or at email at

We, the members of Bethel Lutheran Church Believe That we are all created in God’s image, male and female, and are all called to love our neighbors as Jesus loves us.

We believe that we are many members, but one body in Christ, called to unite all people in God’s love.

We welcome and affirm all people.

We invite those who are seeking God’s presence in their lives, to join us in our common journey.

Our faith community seeks to unite persons of all ages, races, nationalities, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, mental and physical abilities, socioeconomic levels, and theological backgrounds.

Together in our diversity, and being empowered and directed by the Holy Spirit, we will continually strive to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God.” (Micah 6:8)
