The informal survey: 20 somethings in London Ivana: 29. Uses e-‐mail only for Uni and finding a job. Uses Facebook
rarely as she is so busy studying but does text and make calls from her mobile phone, and
mainly while she is ‘on the move’. Olivia: 24. Uses e-‐mail at work only and for finding another job when she is at home. Uses
the BB messenger , rarely texts but is on her cell phone on-‐the-‐move and at home. Uses
Facebook a hell of a lot.

mode of communica\on. Has a Facebook but doesn’t use it very much.
Tom: 26, Actor. Uses text messaging, Facebook, calls through his mobile phone mainly and
only emails when he needs to send a CV out.

“My name’s Betty...and I only use e-mail for work and rarely have a lunchbreak....and I don’t have a landline
phone” E-‐mail. I only use e-‐mail for work. Even my friends, who are also at work, won’t even e-‐mail me even though it’s ‘free’. They’d be more
likely to send a text or Facebook me. No\ce how I’m saying ‘FACEBOOK ME’.
We used to say ‘call me’, we used to say ‘text me’, here and there someone will say BBM me and hell, people even used to say ‘write
me’ but now you can just Facebook me. Facebook, like the text, the call or the email, has become its’
OWN MODE OF COMMUNICATION.
Mobile phone. Mainly for calls to my mum, looking at Apps (Facebook) and texts every now and then.

My 11 yr old brothers Wall
My 11 year old brother has had an ac\ve Facebook account for about a year and has 80
friends. Despite having 80 friends, his communica\on is done more through the chat func\on with mainly
4 people (school friends) and uses the wall func\on/comments generally as a means of
keeping in touch with his family members who do not live with him.

Social Media spend to increase to $4.8 billion by 2014 (an increase of $2.3 billion in comparison to 2009 spend).
Puts things into perspective a bit, doesn’t it?

WARNING: If we don’t contact our respondents through the modes of communica\on they most oken use...MR really will be dead...
“MR is dead” -Andrew Jeavons, (has been saying this
since 2009)
Be#y Adamou, Nebu, UK Part 2: Session 3, Convenor Sue York, Chair Ray Poynter, schedule = 1:48pm to 2:12pm (GMT/London)
MR?
Be#y Adamou, Nebu, UK Part 2: Session 3, Convenor Sue York, Chair Ray Poynter, schedule = 1:48pm to 2:12pm (GMT/London)
Shock me. Keep one step ahead.
Let’s not be the leech on technology anymore...

EVOLVING WITH THE TIMES
• So we’ve seen how we need to evolve in terms of the modes we use to communicate with our respondents.
• Lets talk about evolving with the way we communicate with our respondents.
• Next is a four point guide to increasing those response rates
Be#y Adamou, Nebu, UK Part 2: Session 3, Convenor Sue York, Chair Ray Poynter, schedule = 1:48pm to 2:12pm (GMT/London)
First of all, if you want my attention you got to...
GRAB IT Because I’m NOT coming to you...
Be#y Adamou, Nebu, UK Part 2: Session 3, Convenor Sue York, Chair Ray Poynter, schedule = 1:48pm to 2:12pm (GMT/London)
Secondly.... Create an App.
No, don’t argue with me...no, nonononono, I don’t want to
hear it. Just do it. Get on Facebook. Get on Twitter.
Get on with it. What are you waiting for?
Why? Because if you’re not on an app, if you’re not on the social networking sites I use
the most, then we just won’t ever cross paths. Ever.
Be#y Adamou, Nebu, UK Part 2: Session 3, Convenor Sue York, Chair Ray Poynter, schedule = 1:48pm to 2:12pm (GMT/London)
Thirdly, speak my language...
So, the modes we use to communicate have changed, but also the way we communicate, the language we use...even how we use punctua\on

Fourthly, by doing much more RESEARCH ON RESEARCH!
If you tell everyone a goldfish has a 3 second memory, they’re going
to believe it.
(By the way, goldfish do NOT have a 3
second memory...see how easy it is to believe the lies?)

Challenging long term
beliefs and patterns
of working is hard
(even if the truth makes your life easier)
BUT WE HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE
