This book embodies the later results of the long series of investigations which, con-tinued through several decades with distinguished success, give to Mr. Bandelierhis eminent position among archaeologists and ethnologists.The author and his wife devoted seven months of the year 1895 to exploration ofthe Islands of Titicaca and Koati, in Lake Titicaca, and such sections of thelake shores as were geographically and historically connected with them. Ex-tensive excavations were made, and many valuable discoveries followed.The ruins on the islands are described in detail. Numerous ground plans, photo-graphic views, and plates representing the antiquities obtained, accompany thetext; also two maps of Lake Titicaca and its islands. This important early Portuguese map is the second of a series, now in course ofpublication, which will Illustrate the gradual expansion of knowledge concern-ing the geography of the New World, as known at the opening of the sixteenthcentury. It bears no date, but there is good reason for believing it was drawnas early as 1S02. "Opus nicolay de canerio ianuenais" is the legend appearingin the lower corner on the left, which pives us the name of the author.Little is known concerning Canerio; and we are left to conjecture as to whetherthis excellent piece of work was done in Portugal, the country whose languagehe employs, or in Italy, his native country. It belongs to the same type as doesthe Cantino, and it seems probable that they are somewhat modified copies ofa common original.

THE HISPANIC SOCIETY OF AMERICAThe original map, and the only copy known, from which this facsimile has beenmade, was discovered a few years ago by L. Gallois in the Archives du Service

hydrographique de la Marine, Paris. It appears that the map came to thearchives of the State Department in 1669, which was before the first collectionof papers relating to French Marine affairs was ordered by Colbert, and morethan one quarter of a century before the creation of the Archives of the FrenchNavy.The Canerio map measures 325 by 115 cm. It is drawn with great care andartistic skill. Its reproduction has been difficult by reason of the crinkled andinjured condition of the parchment. Every inscription of the map, however,is legible; and this reproduction in ten sheets is true to the original in everydetail.

Its nomenclature is that of the Cantino map, perhaps of like date; but it containsimportant additions. The north continental area of the New World has herea farther extension southward than in the Cantino, and at both extremities ofthe Atlantic coast line Canerio has placed a Spanish flag. It is further notice-able that the southern continent has an added> extension of ten degrees. Cane-rio, proud of his countryman, writes "The Antilles of the king of Castile dis-covered by Colonbo, Genoese Admiral"; Cantino omits the word "Genoese."Canerio gives us on the eastern seaboard of Brazil, for the first time, the names"Porto de Sto Sebastiano" and "Alapago de Sam Palo."Though wanting some of the artistic touches of the Cantino map, Canerio hasgiven us one that is scientifically of greater value, one richer in nomenclature,the oldest known marine chart on which are indicated degrees of latitude.

It seems altogether probable that the Canerio map or a copy of the same is thePortuguese sea-chart to which Waldseemiiller refers in the "Supplementum" ofthe Strassburg Ptolemy of 1513. It is further to be noted that the agreementbetween Waldseemiiller's Carta Marina of 1516 and the Canerio chart is so strik-ing as to lead to the opinion that the Carta Marina is a printed edition of theCanerio chart on which, however, are to be seen some changes and some im-provements.

Canerio's influence was undoubtedly far-reaching on the early sixteenth centurycartography of the New World, and this influence was enhanced by the work ofWaldseemUller.$20.00

A facsimile reproduction in four sheets of the parchment map of the world pre-served in the Biblloteca Ambroslana, Milan, Italy. Edited by Arthur JamesWelse, M. A. The original is in two sheets, the one measuring 82 by 60 cm., theother 93 by 60 cm. The parts are not so drawn as to admit a perfect adjust-ment; they are, however, clearly the two parts of one map.Although a. hasty examination of the date suggests the reading 1S87, it does notcall for the trained eye of the paleographer to detect in the original as we nowfind it, a forgery. Until Desimoni, a few years since, called attention to thealtered date, the reading 1587 had been accepted. Vesconte de MaloUo held aplace of first importance among the cartographers of his day.

This map exhibits certain very striking features, notably the Pacific coast of theWestern Continent. For South America it is continuous, but is "Terra in-cognita." To the northward of "Stretto dubitoso," this coast extends in widesweep almost parallel to the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, approaching the At-lantic seaboard in the region of the Carolinas.In North America we find the regional names "Lavoradore," "Corte-Reale," notably"Francesca" in which country the French flag is particularly conspicuous,"Tera Florida," "Terra de luchatan de Spania."Along the Atlantic coast, which has the erroneous and rapid trend eastward socharacteristic of early Spanish maps, numerous French names appear, most ofwhich are repeated in the Verrazano map. Cuba- and Haiti are each without a name, though names are given tomany of the islands of the West Indies. The outline of South America re-sembles that of the Turin-Spanish map with the exception that Maiollo has thehypothetical western coast. Only the explorers Corte Real, Columbus and Ma-gellan, are especially referred to on this map; yet it seems evident that it wasdesigned to call special attention to recent French exploration, that is, the ex-ploration of Verrazano.The Old World has been well drawn, but omits the eastern coast of Asia. TheMolucca or Spice Islands are conspicuous. The map is highly ornamented withbuildings indicating the location of important cities, or of those supposed to beimportant; the rulers of little known regions appear ih state; flags are numer-ous indicating the respective claims of those nations participating in the recentdiscoveries. Compass roses and loxodrome lines are numerous, and ships sailthe seas over routes now well known.

In the winter of 1856-7 Ticknor saw and studied at the Sapienza the copy of theTirant lo Blanch referred to above.In his history, pp. 207, 297-9 of vol. I concern the Tirant lo Blanch. A publicationof the current year, most opportune in its relation to the present issue, isthe handsome, folio, large paper volume of 170 printed pages entitled Discursoslefdos en la Real Academia de Buenas Letras de Barcelona en la RecepcidnPiiblica de D. Isidoro Bonsoms y Sicart el dia 9 de Mayo de 1907, Barcelona.The two discourses are entitled respectively La Edici6n Principe del "TirantLo Blanch", Cotejo de los tres ejemplares impresos en "Valencia, en 1490,linicos conocidos hoy dia, por D. Isidro Bonsoms y Sicart and Discurso de Con-testaci(5n del Sr. D. Antonio Rubid y Lluch. Four valuable appendices accom-pany the first discourse. PUBLICATIONSago of the literary significance and value of the Tirant lo Blanch. Theappreciation given by Don Antonio Rubi6 is a felicitous commentary upon thewhole of the criticism of the curate in Don Quijote and especially upon thewords: "aqui comen los cabaUeros y duermen, y mueren en sus camas y hacentestamento antes de su muerte, con otras cosas de que todos los demds librosdeste g^nero carecen." The Tirant lo Blanch, as the other two Catalan fictionsof the same class, shows the Breton cycle brought to earth and fact under thejoint influence of the Catalan national character and the Italian Renaissance,the latter as shown especially in Boccaccio. Men^ndez y Pelayo is cited asdeclaring that it is one of the best books of chivalry that have been written inthe world. In it Don Antonio finds rapid dialogue and excellent descriptionand narration, but also passages of desperate monotony. As a monument ofthe Catalan tongue it is also of rare importance.There exists no more perfect bibliographical study than that which Seiior Bonsomshas made of the three existing copies of the Valencian edition of 1490, viz. : thatof the University of Valencia, that of the British Museum and that of theSapienza, now in the possession of the Hispanic Society. In his third appendixSefior Bonsoms presents the typographical variants and a facsimile of the firstand second pages of the three copies and gives their water marks and those ofsome leaves of a fourth copy owned by D. Angel Aguil6. The history of eachcopy so far as attainable is also given. The Sapienza copy was sold in 1861 bythe Cardinal Ludovico Altieri with the consent of His Holiness Pius IX to theMarquis of Salamanca. He sold it to the Baron AchiUe de Seillifere. From thefamily of the latter it came unto the hands of Quaritch. The details of thestory, particularly those relating to the purchase from the Roman University,are of great interest.
