Awards for All - what is it?• Awards for All is the Big Lottery Fund’s small grants programme

• The programme aims to help improve local communities and the lives of people most in need.

• The programme is always open, and there are no deadlines.

• The application form is short and simple.

• You will find out if you are successful within six weeks.

Current success rate = 70%+

Awards for All - How much you can apply for?

─ Between £300 and £10,000

─ Only one application at a time

─ One Awards for All funded project needs to be completed and the End of Grant report approved before you can apply again

─ One organisation cannot receive more than £10,000 of Awards for All grants in any one year period.

Who can apply to Awards for All?You can apply if you are a:

voluntary and community organisation

school

parish or town council

health body

You cannot apply if you are a:

× individual or sole trader

× profit-making organisation

× statutory organisation other than those listed above

× organisation not established in the UK

What can Awards for All pay for?─ equipment hire or purchase

─ information technology equipment

─ building and refurbishment work

─ sessional workers

─ updating equipment and premises for health and safety reasons

─ training

─ volunteer expenses

─ transport costs

─ venue hire These are just some examples

VAT and buildings

─ BIG will only fund non-recoverable VAT.

─ Any planning permission needed must be in place before making an application.

─ For building projects, applicants must own their own freehold or hold a lease that will continue for at least five years.

─ Total costs of building works must not be more than £25,000 (including VAT).

Examples of what Awards for All cannot pay for:─ Activities that happen or start before BIG

confirms the grant

─ Day-to-day running costs

─ Existing activities and repeat or regular events

─ Items that mainly benefit an individual

─ Salaries of permanent or fixed term staff

─ Projects or activities that the state has a legal obligation to provide Repeat activities

opportunity to learn in a place that suits you without the expense and time of travel. It will give you support and guidance on applying for funding and top tips

to presenting your project.Webinars run every week and last approx 40 minutes to an hour. You can ask

Reaching Communities- what is it?• Reaching Communities is the Big

Lottery Fund’s large grants programme

• The programme aims to help improve local communities and the lives of people most in need.

• The programme is always open, and there are no deadlines.

• It is a 2-stage application process. If successful, typically it takes around 6 months from initial application to getting funded.

Current success rate at Stage 1 = 20%+

The Reaching Communities programme has two strands:Reaching Communities •Grants from £10,000 for revenue projects lasting up to 5 years•Expect average grant to be £300,000•Applicants for projects over £500,000 must contact us to discuss before applying•Capital grants from £10,000 to £100,000

Reaching Communities Buildings

•Grants from £100,000 to larger capital projects•Can now apply for revenue funding associated with capital projects•Applicants must contact us to discuss the project before applying

Reaching Communities:Who can apply?

Reaching Communities

•Registered charity•Voluntary or community group•Statutory body (including schools)•Charitable or not for profit company•Social enterprise

Reaching Communities Buildings

•Same as for the Reaching Communities strand except the only statutory bodies that can apply are town and parish councils•Only projects within one of the eligible areas can be funded – use the Postcode eligibility checker on our website

We will assess the project and let you have a decision ASAP (we will give you an estimate on receipt of application).

Common Reject Reasons

─ Outside programme remit - apply for things we do not fund (more suited to another lottery distributor)

─ Insufficient evidence of need

─ Unclear outcomes, or does not make link between project’s outcomes and programme outcomes

Making the best application: Hints and tips

• We are always happy to talk to you about potential projects at an early stage – call or email the Big Advice Line.

• Read the guidance! Use the application form help notes.

• Keep your answers simple, clear, specific and consistent.

• Act on any feedback we have given you.• Remember to budget for everything i.e. inflation,

auditors, evaluation costs, full cost recovery. • Don’t rush – plan carefully. It might take longer than

you think to set up your project.• Proofread your form or ask someone else to read it;

talk through what you’ve written. Use the form’s checklist.
