W e’re now in an El Nino season, so as predicted by meteo-

rologists, this has been a very wet, dry season. For those who are new to Florida, don’t be fooled. There are seasons when we have extended periods of drought, creating extremely dry conditions. As you ponder options of plants to install in your landscape, add fire resis-tance to the selection criteria for plants that will be closest to your house. The Florida-Friendly Landscaping Principle of “right plant, right place” is key when designing a firewise landscape.

Fire resistant plants do not readily ignite from flame or other ignition sources. The stems and foliage of plants do not readily contribute to the fuel or fire intensity. Accord-ing to the website firewise.org, fire resistant plants have moist, supple leaves; minimal dead wood; water-like sap with no strong odor; and very little sap or resin materials. Examples of fire resistant plants are: ajuga, chives, coreopsis, aloe, cactus, azalea, trumpet vine, coreopsis, iris, daylily, mahonia, blanket flower, purple coneflower, flowering dogwood. Plants that accumulate a lot of dry material ignite readily and are not fire resistant. Junipers and oakleaf hydrangeas are good examples of plants in the landscape that will ignite readily.

Place large trees at least 30 feet away from your home. Leaves that fall from trees hanging over the house can accumulate on the roof and in the gutters; thus, serving as a source of fuel during a wildfire. It is recommended that trees close to the house be kept at a

level just below the eves of the house. An ideal defensible space can be created by placing large trees and shrubs in a border on the perimeter of your property with grass closer to the house.

Always think about the mature size of the plant before installing them in the garden. Dense vegetation, especially those with plants that are not fire resistant, can serve as a source of fuel for wildfires.

Maintenance of plants should be ongoing. Prune out dead branches from trees and shrubs as this a source of fuel. Mid to late February is an excellent time to prune deciduous trees before they start to leaf out in the spring. Plants that are characterized as fire resistant can still burn, especially if not properly maintained. Do not allow the mulch in the flower beds to dry out excessively, it will readily ignite.

A firewise landscape is one tool in the battle to prevent your home from being devoured by a wildfire. If building a new home or making renovations to your garden this spring, consider using fire resistant materials.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, you will likely see a lot of red home decor items in retail stores. Red is a strong, bold color that can perk up a space year-round. If you are look-ing to infuse the color red into your home decor, now is an ideal time to snag some key pieces.

Shades of redRed comes in all shades and

tones, and you don't have to limit yourself to using just one in a space. For example, it's OK to mix tomato red with burgundy in the same space. This technique essentially involves using a tint or shade of a dominate color. In home decor, some of the easiest shades of red to work with in a space are ruby red, bright poppy and rich tomato. These

shades of red can serve as ideal pops of color.

How to use redRed, like other bold accent

colors, can be used in virtu-ally any room of the home, but be sure to use the color purposefully in order to not overdo it. Some of the best ways to bring red into the home are through the use of bold, bright pops of color in deliberate and thoughtful ways. Incorporating small yet impactful red accents could be achieved through

the use of pieces such as chairs, artwork, toss pillows and even area rugs. These types of accent pieces will allow you to bring the color red into your space, while still allowing versatility should you choose to swap in another accent in the future.

The use of a bold accent color will not only make a statement and add interest, but could also serve as the springboard for the rest of the color story around your space.

Q: The pictures enclosed turned out pretty good, I thought.  I may have missed out by not taking one of the side of the vase opposite the lizard handle, which is the whole of the spider web with the spider about to be con-sumed by the raven.  Enclosed you will also find a sketch of the bottom of the piece which is complete.  The vase is almost 9 inches tall.

I have taken the liberty of enclosing pictures of another piece, which has since been taken to Boulder, Colorado, by my son and daughter-in-law. We found no markings on the bottom and we are curious if it is Depression glass. It is about 4 to 5 inches in diameter. We value your input on all the above.

A: You have an attractive hand-painted porcelain vase. Teplitz is a name widely rec-ognized by collectors of fine porcelain in the antiques mar-ketplace. Decorative porcelain was produced by a number of factories in the Teplitz-Turn area of Bohemia during the late 19th to early 20th century. Your vase was made prior to World War I. Potential dollar value is $250 to $500.

The fluted glass bowl with the beaded edge in opaline

and marigold colors is called Carnival glass. It was pro-duced in massive quantities by a number of manufacturers in America prior to World War II. It was cheap to produce the iridescent finish to give it the look of the very expensive Tiffany art glass. Originally, it was marketed under the names Nancy glassware and Taffeta glass. Taffeta and Nancy glass was used by various companies as premiums for purchasing their products, e.g. groceries, gasoline, and for prizes in large quantities at carnivals. Col-lectors gave it the tag name Carnival glass. Carnival glass has been a specific category of collecting for decades. The bowl you have would sell in the $100 range.

The only thing it says on it is “Made in Japan.” Can you give me any infor-mation on it and possibly its worth if anything?

in Japan as marked. This type of ceramics is called Satsuma style. It is a commercial grade pot-tery produced in Japan for export starting in the late 1920s and continues being made currently. Your decorative vase

was likely made prior to World War II.  Until 1921, pottery made in Japan was marked Nippon so it is likely the vase was made in the 1930s or later. Potential dollar value is below $50.

Q: I have a violin that my father purchased while in France during World War II. The inside has the inscrip-tion Stradivarius and I wanted to know if you know where I could take it for inspection to see if it is the real thing. — L.S., Internet

A: The chances that you own a genuine Stradivar-ius are slim to none. In the late 19th century various mail order catalogs e.g. Sears & Roebuck, Mont-gomery Ward, etceteras offered copies of Stradi-varius violins including

antique finishes and Strad labels on the inside of the violin. The potential dollar value of your violin is based on how good a copy it might be and how well it plays. Is it strange to get excited about your bathroom? Maybe. But I sure love this little space in my cottage. I've long been a believer in making every room in your home equally lovely, even those out-of-sight private spaces like your bath. So when we were remodeling our little fixer-upper on the lake, I knew this functional room had to also be beauti-ful. My bathroom is kind of an odd space, but it suits me to perfection.

Since the en-suite bath-room leads right to the

bedroom, with its large, dark, religious paintings Dan discovered years ago in Europe, the bath also had to make a strong visual state-ment. My tool? Artwork. I've been collecting nudes for some time and had them scattered throughout my home in Atchison, Kansas. So I decided when we moved I would amass the entire col-lection in this private space, completely papering the walls with them. It allowed me to squeeze in a whole lot of artwork — something I needed to do all over the cottage if I was to find room for every piece of art I loved from my old house.

Maybe one reason I love the nude studies so much is because they celebrate women of all different shapes and sizes, a reminder that we are all beautiful and need to feel good in our own skin.

Instead of a traditional sink cabinet, I decided to splurge just a bit and instead use a stately piece of furni-ture, then transform it into a vanity. Instead of just a plain-old sink, I wanted this to be the focal point of the room.

I started with this gorgeous sideboard, then had marble fitted on top. In general, I want to keep the furnishings at Innisfree consistent with

the style you would expect to find in a lake cottage: simple, casual, comfortable. This elegant vanity was one of my few departures.

Instead of installing a light over the vanity mirror, I kept with my sideboard approach and placed a pair of lamps on each side of the counter-top. Every time my sister visits she complains about this setup, declaring that it's awful lighting for putting on makeup. But I don't care. Even though it's not the most practical thing in the world, I like the look of the stately blue and white lamps gracing

LOS ANGELES — Four years after it first listed for sale, the Napa estate of late actor and comedian Robin Williams has sold for $18.1 million in an all-cash deal.

The 640-acre property, called Villa Sorriso for "villa of smiles," returned to market two years ago for $29.9 million and was more recently listed at $22.9 million.

The sprawling estate, built for the comic more than a decade ago, cen-ters on a limestone-clad mansion of nearly 20,000 square feet.

Features include a two-story entry with a rotunda and bell tower, a billiards room, an oak-paneled library, a 12-seat home theater and three safe rooms. An elevator services each of the home's three floors.

Climate-controlled cellars provide storage for artwork and wine.

In all, there are five bedrooms and 10 bath-rooms in the main house. A caretaker's house adds four bedrooms.

A 65-foot-long infinity-edge swimming pool, a tennis court, lawns and rolling gardens make up the mansion grounds.

Elsewhere on the prop-erty are more than 18 acres of producing vineyards, hiking and horse riding trails, mature olive trees and a spring-fed pond. A nine-stall horse barn is among the equestrian facilities.

Williams, who died in August 2014 at 63, rose to fame on the sitcom "Mork & Mindy" (1977-82).

Among his films are "Good Morning, Vietnam" (1987), "Dead Poets Society" (1989) and "Good Will Hunting" (1997), for which he won an Oscar for his supporting role.

Swinging for a home sale

Retired Major League Baseball player Mike Lieberthal has put his home field in the North Ranch area of Westlake Village on the market for about $5 million.

The 9-plus-acre spread includes a 9,627-square-foot Mediterranean villa, a custom swimming pool and spa, a pool house, a lighted basketball court and a putting green.

Inside, the two-story floor plan features a foyer with a chandelier, a custom home theater, a wine closet and an oak-walled game room with a row of flat-screen TVs, a billiards table and a wet bar.

Other living areas include a gym, an office/library, seven bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms. A wide center island, a country-style range and tray ceilings highlight the cook's kitchen.

Fireplaces are found in the living and game rooms, breakfast area and master bedroom.

French doors open to a covered patio overlook-ing the park-like setting. A porte-cochere, a motor court and a four-car garage sit at the entrance to the home.

Lieberthal bought the property in 1999 for $3.5 million. The house was on the market for as much as $6.5 million last year.

at Westlake High School and was later taken third overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1990 ama-teur draft.

The catcher played 14 seasons in the majors for the Phillies and Los Ange-les Dodgers, making two all-star teams. He retired in 2008. 

Last call in Hollywood Hills

Adam Carolla will have to find a new bar to belly up to in the coming year.

The comedian and his wife, Lynette, have sold their home in Hollywood Hills, which features a vintage pub with its own entrance, among other things, for about $4.8 million.

The Spanish Revival-style villa, called Vista del Lago, sits behind a double-gated entry and has a circular driveway.

Beyond a hand-carved front door, the house opens to a two-story entry with a detailed ceiling, Saltillo-tile floors and a wrought iron staircase embellished in colorful tile. A dining room with cathedral ceilings and a step-down living room with dark wood floors are in keeping with the original 1920s style.

Other areas include a retro-inspired kitchen with a center island, a second living room, a gym, five bedrooms and six bathrooms. A private balcony and free-standing brick fireplace highlight the master suite.

An inner courtyard with alfresco dining and a tiled fountain sits between two

wings of the home and is accessed by arched French doors. In the pub, porthole windows look onto the swimming pool.

A massive garage with a lift and parking for up to 10 cars is also within the more than half-acre grounds.

Carolla and his wife bought the house in 2003 for $1.63 million.

The exact sale price was $4,801,500.

Carolla, 51, is an actor, producer and writer whose television credits include "The Man Show" (1999 to 2003), "Crank Yankers" (2002 to '07) and "Catch a Contractor" (2011 to present).

He has hosted "The Adam Carolla Show," a daily podcast, since 2009.

His new home is a knockout

Former professional boxer Mike Tyson has

added a new trophy to his collection: a 10,401-square-foot mansion in the Las Vegas suburbs.

Tyson recently paid $2.5 million for an Italian-style home in gated Seven Hills, a golf course community in Henderson, Nevada,

where he and his wife have lived since 2008, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The two-story house, built in 2001, opens in grand fashion to a double-height foyer with marble flooring and a sweeping wrought iron staircase.

In my family, no one ever seems to be able to hang their towels back on the towel bars. So I have given up and look for creative ways to hold my towels. In my bath, I put hand towels in a delicate crystal bowl. It makes for a lovely display, along

with the silver mirror and jar, filled with cotton balls.

Maybe it comes from living in old homes, which are notoriously short on storage, but I like to keep the things I use every day out where I can see them, displayed in beautiful containers. I used one of the silver trays I inher-ited from Dan's mom as a staging area for a few daily necessities and treasures that make me

happy. An antique mug with my monogram holds my makeup brushes and reading glasses. Another footed bowl is my make-shift jewelry box. And the rest of the space holds things that make me smile, like a photo of my sweetie, Dan, and another of me and my dad.

Everyone in my family makes fun of me for my nightly bath ritual. They all prefer showers. But me? I take a long, hot,

luxurious bath every night. I soak until I'm a prune, letting the heat steam away the day, relaxing and reviving me. I keep my bubble bath on a sweet little bench, which used to be in my mom's house. The glass jar holds my razors — and my readers, because I can't see anymore to shave my legs! I've covered the window next to the tub in a simple black and white cafe curtain. They provide

privacy while still allow-ing the room to be flooded with natural light during the day.

In Atchison, I had a beautiful pedestal tub. But I thought that would be too much in our cottage. So I picked a standard tub and did the walls in subway tile with gray grout. I splurged on the fixtures, all in a warm gold finish. A lot of people have switched from brass hardware to silver,

then to brushed nickel. In my book, you should never follow a trend when selecting hardware for your home — trends change too fast. Instead, pick a finish you love now, and will for years to come. For me, it was the warmth of gold.
