Zita, Aras and their three kids live in a beautiful, serene neighborhood. Their bunga-low is always party central, with neighborhood children and their parents often coming over to swim or socialize. But, there was just one problem.
Their bungalow’s choppy layout meant that while the party was going on in the living room, Zita was segregated in the kitchen while she was preparing food. They were looking for a kitchen that would open up plenty of new pos-sibilities when it came to the recipe for a good party.
This project started as a kitchen reno, but it rapidly expanded to include the living and dining rooms, too. The plan was to knock down two walls, opening up the entire fl oor to the beautiful backyard view of pool and ravine. The eat-in kitchen area would be removed and replaced with lots of storage cabinets, an oven, microwave and built-in freezer and fridge. We would relocate the cooktop under the window,
and move the sink to a giant peninsula in the center of the kitchen.
Even though we were knocking out the walls between the kitchen and the living and dining rooms, we had to be very careful not to crack the beautiful plaster crown molding in those rooms.
The solution was to cut the wall well before it joined the ceiling, leaving a bulkhead that would protect the integrity of the plaster design.
I’m a huge fan of natural stone coun-tertops. In this case, I wanted to install something durable but made from a material that was also timeless and classic. Honed marble was the solution — a beautiful sealed white stone with grey veining was the perfect choice for both counters and backsplash. The marble is complemented by cabinetry in two different tones: oyster for the upper cabinets, contrasted sharply with an ebony oak fi nish for the lower cabinets. We even painted Zita and Aras’ existing
wooden hutch in the same oyster color, so it would meld with the new cabinetry.
For the dining room, we chose an inviting round walnut-stained table surrounded by fi ve comfortable chairs for family dinners. We also placed four grey leather counter-height stools along the island, providing additional seating between the kitchen and living room.
This open concept kitchen is absolute-ly stunning. I didn’t want appliances distracting from the impact of the design, so I chose built-in, concealed fridge, freezer and dishwasher units. The professional-grade, in-counter cooktop is positioned right in front of the window, so the chef can sample the view while sampling the broth. The state-of-the-art cooktop even features a concealed fume hood that pops up at the

Q: I think snails are eating my plants. I don’t always see
them eating, but there are holes in some of my plant leaves,
especially on my margarita sweet potato vine. Is there anything I can do? They are about the size of a dime or a little smaller.
A: Florida is home to a
number of terrestrial snails,
many are native, and we have a few that have been introduced. The one that has a hearty appetite for our North Florida plants is the Asian tramp snail. They are mollusks and normally hide out in moist areas of your landscape.
Snails can cause a great deal of damage to the plants they feed on. You will see them on leaves, but they will feed on all plant parts.
First, you will notice irregular holes in the leaves or clipped off stems or tips. Not all feeding damage is snail-related, so look for the tell-tale snail calling card of slime trails on the leaves or surrounding surfaces.

the name of her scooter. I am from a family of 14 children, and we had a scooter like she described. We received the scooter in 1942, and it had already
been used, but Daddy fi xed it. It was painted bright fi re-engine red. It had four wheels and you sat on the seat with both feet on the
sides of front wheels and pumped the handle to make it go. I seemed to remember we called it the Irish Mail. We all had much fun on it, and it was repaired many times. In 1970, I found the scooter under the house where I was raised; it was rusted and in need of repair. I restored it, and it is now in the Historical Society of my hometown, Buckhan-non, West Virginia.

WILBER: Sago palms can be male or female
A good management strategy to control snail damage relies on a combination of methods. The fi rst thing to do is to eliminate their hiding places. They will hide under thick mulch, boards or debris. In areas like wooden decks or ledges, regularly remove the snails. Snails can be a sign of an overwatered landscape. Make sure you are only watering one-half to three-quar-ters of an inch when you water. With all the rain we have been getting this summer, evaluate whether you even need to be irrigating.
Handpicking snails can be effective if you do it often. Wear gloves whenever handling snails, and discard them in a bucket fi lled with salty water. You also can make a trap for snails by putting a piece of card-board on the ground overnight near where the damage is occurring. The snails will move under the dew-moistened cardboard, and you will be able to remove them from the area. Beer traps can be used to get snails, too. Simply pour beer and a few slices of banana in a steep-sided bowl. The snails are drawn to the smell and crawl in, but they cannot crawl out. Barriers such as copper fl ashing or screen can keep snails out of plant beds.
Also, a barrier of diatomaceous earth, available at retail garden centers, can stop snails from moving into a landscaped bed. Diato-maceous earth needs to be reapplied after a heavy
rain or irrigation because it washes away. There are a couple of pesticides such as metaldehyde that can kill them. Poisons should be used with caution around children and pets, so be sure to read the pesticide label carefully. An organic alternative to the poison is a product that contains iron phosphate. When the snails ingest the iron, they stop feeding.

A: Sago palm is a common cycad that
is used in our North Central Florida land-scapes. Cycads are an ancient plant, and they are dioecious, meaning they will either be a male plant or a female plant. The male sago palm send up a 12- to 18-inch cone structure almost every year. This cone contains pollen that then is carried to a female sago fl oral spike. The female sago fl ower may only appear once every two years; only the female sago palms will make seeds. The fl ower spikes do not need to be removed. They will fade out after about a month or two.

A: A “standby” genera-tor system is a
permanently installed residential generator that runs on propane or natural gas. In the event of a power outage, the system automatically starts up to supply electrical power to the
home. In most cases, this is not a do-it-your-self project, and profession-al installa-tion and permits are required. In
my experience, early summer can be a very good time to install your standby generator system for the following three reasons:
1. Most likely your contractor may be dealing with issues like pouring a concrete pad, trenching and landscaping, and drilling holes. So, early
summer weather condi-tions can be ideal to complete these tasks.
2. Also, you want to be ready and have your standby generator up and running for late summer and winter storms well in advance.
3. The installation price may be a little sharper since you’re not trying to rush the job with a quick fall install or dealing with wet weather in spring.

The rapper closed on that compound two days after Apple Inc. offi cially announced it had acquired Beats, the company he co-founded with Inter-scope Geffen A&M Chairman Jimmy Iovine, for $3 billion.
