Far Eastern University in the University Belt Area, West Sampaloc, City of Manila, is a nonsectarian, private university in the Philippines. Created by the merger of Far Eastern College and the Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance, FEU became a university in 1934 under the

guidance of first president Nicanor Reyes, Sr. FEU’s campus is noted for a number of historical buildings preserved from the first half of the 19th century.!

In 1989, Reyes introduced substantial revitalization to FEU that took place over a number of years, with renovation and modernization of facilities and grounds and upgrading of the University’s standard. This resulted in the accreditation of the Institute of Arts and Sciences, the Institute of Education, and the Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance, and, in the mid-1990s, the Deregulation of the University by the Commission on Higher Education. The auditorium was upgraded to accommodate modern stage productions. The university also received an ISO9000:2001 for Quality Management and became one of the pilot universities in assessment of IQUAME. Last year, FEU was granted with Autonomous Status. THE HISTORY OF BUKIDNON BIOTA CHAPTER By Dr. Andrea G. Azuelo

The Bukidnon BIOTA Chapter as an association was organized in July 1984. It started from a small group of teachers in Central Mindanao University with 18 active prime movers, greatly dedicated to lay down their commitment to promote biology education. The association was headed by Dr. Victor B. Amoroso, a faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The first set of the BIOTA Officers were the following:

President - Victor B. Amoroso

Vice-President - Elsie P. Laurente

Secretary - Andrea G. Azuelo

Treasurer - Estela Y. Cequina

Auditor - Medino A. Yebron

P.R.O. - Novesica S. Bolivia

Social Managers - Luzminda C. Gurrea

Arturo Blancaver

The membership expanded to a nearby college, the Mountain View College, Valencia, Bukidnon. Through the years, it has received support and participation of increasing number of schools not only in the province and region but from all over Mindanao.

For the past twenty-eight (28) years, BIOTA Bukidnon Chapter fostered a series of annual conventions, workshops, field trips, exhibits and established linkages with other scientific organizations. It has also disseminated research information and improvement on teaching and learning activities through the BIOSCIENCE Bulletin. Since then, an annual two-day convention and meeting has been held at different venues in the province with varying themes each year.

As past lead active president, Dr. Victor B. Amoroso, was once a member of the Board of Directors of the National BIOTA-Philippines, Inc. He is currently the Director of Center for Biodiversity Research and Extension in Mindanao (CEBREM) and Higher Education Regional Center (HERRC).

It is with great pride that from a core of few active teachers, the association has grown to become a very potent instrument delivering the information in the promotion of biology education in the country.

24TH AABE CONFERENCE IN THE PHILIPPINES (Cont’d #om page 1)

Aside from the large delegation from Japan, next to us, participants came from Australia, India, Malaysia, South Korean, Singapore and Thailand.

The cultural day tour brought participants to the Viilla Escudero Plantations in Tiaong, Quezon where participants were serenaded while riding carabao-driven carts. They enjoyed most the buffet lunch at the waterfalls and the colorful Filipino dance festival.

As the conference came to an end, the university campus lit up as the “Pailaw sa Pasko” ushered the Christmas holidays. Everyone bid each other “not goodbye, till we meet again” at the farewell dinner where “Sanghabi” an indigenous music group amazed participants with an interactive rendition of various ethnic instruments/sounds and motion, like being one with nature. It was an awesome experience.

Thank you BIOTA for having this Philippine experience of AABE a successful and a memorable one. We invite you to join the 25th AABE Biennial Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 2014. We hope to see you all there.

THE HISTORY OF WESTERN VISAYAS BIOTA CHAPTER By Antonio G. Recodo, Ph.D.

The Western Visayas (WV) BIOTA Chapter was established after the Siliman University Convention in the Summer of 1982. That was also the time Western Visayas was preparing to host for the first time the national convention in 1984. Dr. Minda Formacion was the WV chapter president. She acted as the chair of the convention which was hosted by the University of the Philippines, Iloilo Campus.

The chapter was inactive for sometime until its intention to host the National Convention for the second time after 16 years. To prepare for the big event, a school-based chapter, the University of San Agustin (USA) Chapter was organized in June 1999. This was also for the members of the faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences organizing themselves to support the regional chapter and the national governing board. This school-based chapter worked closely with the WV Chapter.

The Annual National BIOTA Convention in 2000 was hosted by the USA Chapter and it has remained active up to the present working with the WV Chapter where some of its activities are delegated to the school-based chapter. Since then, the USA has been organizing seminars, trainings, and competitions to support the objectives of BIOTA.

Dr. Antonio Recodo was the first USA Chapter President. When Mr Recodo assumed the presidency of the revived Regional Chapter, he was succeeded by Mr. John Rover Tavarro. Other officers were Dr. Rex Sadaba (Vice-President), Ms. Jesusima Menserate (Secretary), Ms. Victoria Sustento (Treasurer), Ms. Egna Ballais (Auditor), Dr. Asuncion Faro, Ms. Eden Rose Calaor, Ms. Charina Vallente, Mr. Marvin Cadornigara (Board of Directors) and Dr. Minda Formacion (Adviser).

Presently, both the USA and WV chapters are active in supporting the mission of BIOTA by sponsoring regional convention, seminars, research presentations and competitions. Both chapters are manned by officers of professional competence with the previous officers serving as source of inspiration and encouragement to the organization.

THE HISTORY OF CARAGA BIOTA CHAPTER By Ana Marie T. Acevedo

When I studied MS Biology at University of Santo Tomas in 2003 to 2005, Prof. Rosie Madulid was my thesis adviser. At that time she was the National Secretary of the BIOTA-Phils. Upon Prof. Madulid’s invitations, I was able to attend a BIOTA national convention. Prof. Madulid kept telling me to organize BIOTA in our school and that the the National Chapter officers are very much willing to assist us if ever we will organize seminar and workshops.

For two years, I was afraid to accept the challenge. But later, I felt that there was really a need to organize a local chapter of BIOTA so that those who cannot afford can update their educational horizon through attendance in seminar-workshops. I presented the matter to our Surigao Del Sur Campus Director Dr. Cerila O. de los Argos. Without second thought she approved the proposal to host a seminar-workshop. Then I presented the idea to our school president Dr. Remegita C. Olvida, who told me to make the activity region-wide.

Hence a 3-day regional seminar workshop on “Enhancing Teaching Competencies of Biology Teachers for Quality Education” was conducted in September 19-21, 2007 at Surigar del Sur Polytechnic State College-Surigao del Sur Institute of Technology Cantilan, now Surigao del Sur State University Cantilan Campus. I was the over-all chairman of the seminar-workshop. Invitations were sent throughout Caraga region. The speakers were from the BIOTA National Chapter headed by Prof. Rosie Madulid, who oriented the participants about BIOTA. Prof. Alfonso G. Pagulayan talked about Curricular Updates/Updating Science Education, Dr. Jessamyn Marie O. Yazon, Dr. Edna A. Amparado, Ms. Genersol G. Monton conducted a workshop on Science Investigatory Project, while Prof. Dolores A. Mateo and Ms. Genersol G. Monton conducted a hands-on/practicum on Construction of Instructional Materials.

On the third day of the seminar-workshop, an organizational meeting was held, and the Caraga BIOTA Chapter was born. There were 55 regular members coming from different private and public schools in Caraga region from elementary, secondary and tertiary levels. The first set of elected officers for 2007-2009 were: Ana Marie T. Acevedo (President), Emmylou Borja (Vice-President), Chaile M. Salinas (Secretary), Gemma A. Gruyal (Treasurer), Maurice A. Tajonera (Auditor), Dr. Tito G. Rafil (P.I.O.), Ma. Theresa Q. Yusico, Jocelyn Alipao, Mauricio A. Adlaon (Board of Directors, College level); Zaldy Alima, Carlenie Aranas (Board of Directors, Secondary level); Oysie P. Sabejon and Septeriano Senoc (Board of Directors, Elementary Level).

The first regional Caraga BIOTA Chapter conventionn was held on August 20-22, 2008 at the Surigao Education Center, Surigao City. The theme of the convention was “Biotech and Bioresearch.” The annual regional convention that followed from 2009 to 2012 were held at Butuan City.

In 2009, Caraga BIOTA Chapter was awarded as one of the finalists for Most Productive Chapter during the National Convention. And for three consecutive years (2010-2012), our chapter garnered the first prize as the Most Productive Chapter awarded by the National BIOTA Chapter during Annual National BIOTA Convention and Scientific Sessions.

DILIMAN BIOTA CHAPTER HOLDS SEMINAR

As a pre-national convention activity, the BIOTA Diliman Chapter conducted its 9th seminar at the University of the Philippines College of Education on March 23, 2013 with the theme “Bioethics in Teaching Biology”. Ms. Sally B. Gutierez, Science Education Associate II of UP NISMED and Ms. Lea Ivy O. Manzanero, Co-Chair of ECCAP WG13 of UNESCO Bangkok, Thailand each shared a lecture emphasizing the need to provide the introduction of bioethics in biology teaching, promote the appreciation of the critical role of bioethics in the advancement of science, identify topics in biology for the integration of bioethics, and enhance the role of ethics for the practical applications in daily life.

The first part of the seminar highlighted the significant role of bioethics in enhancing the critical thinking skills of high school students. Moreover, the benefits and risks of the advancement of science and technology such as genetic engineering, stem cell research, cloning, and their social acceptance comprise most of the issues which the students can be made aware of because they as well share the responsibility of knowing the impact of science and technology.

The second part of the seminar was a lecture which covered the importance of animal ethics and the need to integrate the knowledge and the values that have to be developed even in the high school curriculum. The lecture revolved on the discussion of the unjust treatment and disproportionate suffering of animals and the examination of the ethical concepts such as consciousness, sentience, intrinsic value and the right to life.

These lectures were offshoots of the papers presented by the invited lecturers in the 13th Asian Bioethics Conference concurrent with the Sixth UNESCO Asia Pacific Schools of Ethics Roundtable conducted in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia last August 27-30, 2012.

The seminar ended with the awarding of the certificates of appreciation to the speakers and the certificates of attendance to the participants and the election of the new set of officers for 2013-2015. The list of officers is as follows: President: Jason A. Orozco; Vice-President: Sally B. Gutierez; Secretary: Welyn M. Mayor; Treasurer: Kyrie Grant G. Taclobao; Auditor: Kamila C. Ortega; P.R.O.: Reynald Alfred A. Recede; Chapter Adviser: Rosanelia T. Yangco.

THE BIRTH OF BICOL BIOTA CHAPTER By Socorro P. Del Castillo

In February 1969, I joined a 3-day training on the BSCS (Biological Science Curriculum Study) Green Version sponsored by the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports (DECS) and the National Science Development Board (NSDB) (now the DepEd and DOST). It was held at the University of Nueva Caceres, Naga City with Dr. Vicenta Reyes, Ms. Perpinan, and an American Professor as trainors. Participants were selected Biology Teachers from both public and private high schools in Region V. After the training, we, the participants, organized ourselves into Bicol Biology Teachers Association (BBTA). Nick Acosta of Ateneo de Naga was elected as the President; Anita Hidalgo of Colegio de Sta. Isabel as Vice-President; Socorro A. Perez of University of Nueva Caceres (UNC) as the Secretary; Raquel de la Torre of Camarines Sur National HIgh School as the Treasurer; and Prof. Margarito Delgado of UNC (not a participant) was the adviser.

In Summer of 1967, I was enrolled at the Graduate School of Philippine Women’s University (PWU). As a graduate student major in Biology, I was invited to attend the BIOTA Convention hosted by Biological Science Department of PWU. Prof. Felicisima Garcia and Prof. Alicia Sta. Maria (who were my professors then) were the ones in charge of the convention.

I returned to Naga City in June 1967 to resume teaching. I encouraged all the officers and members of the Bicol Biology Teachers Association (BBTA) to attend the next convention which was going to be held at Centro Escolar University (CEU) in Summer of 1968. The BBTA officers and members also decided to associate BBTA to BIOTA and formally rename our group as BIOTA-Bicol Chapter.

We were more than ten (10) participants from Bicol who attended the BIOTA convention in 1968. Inspired by the warm reception of the National BIOTA Officers and the professional growth the group had gained, the Bicol Chapter became very active and sponsored various activities, recruited more members, including student associates. A monthly meeting was hosted by different high schools both private and public at different towns.

In Summer of 1976, the Bicol Chapter was brave enough to host National BIOTA Convention for 3 days at the University of Nueva Caceres, Naga City. Then in 1992, the Bicol Chapter once again hosted the national convention in Naga City, at Colegio de Santa Isabel (now Universidad de Santa Isabel).

Through all these years from 1967 at PWU to date, the BIOTA Bicol Chapter never failed to attend the national convention of BIOTA. Though it has become dormant sometimes, due to sickness and/or change of assignment, bulk of school obligation, the chapter never died, its nucleus remained visible. Given more prodding and encouragement, young and energetic members accepted the persuasion of an Old BIOTAn. Now, the chapter is under the leadership of its President: Dr. Michael Clores; Vice-President: Ma. Aurora Conde; Treasurer: Dr. Ramona Renegado; Secretary: Alice Naag; P.I.O.: Malyn S. Siguenza: Business Manager: Bernie Azores. The chapter is inspired by the generous Ex-Officio: Mrs. Josephine G. Arcilla and Past Presidents: Mr.Nick Acosta (ADNU); Ms. Socorro del Castillo (ADNU); Ms. Teresita Mino (CBSUA); Mr. Eriberto Bacud (SRNHS); Ms. Elna Martinez (NCF).

Motivated by past accomplishments of BIcol Chapter, the current local officers took the challenge of hosting the 47th Annual National BIOTA Convention. It was held last year at the Ateneo de Naga University, one of today’s premiere universities in southern Luzon.
