WeLComeIf you are thinking about signing up for a course you are in the right place.
Our brochure is packed with a huge range of classes and courses which can help you to develop new skills; find employment; further your career; gain a qualification; share an interest or attend solely for personal pleasure and enjoyment. The choice is yours… and we are happy to help you find the right course and get the most from it.
Our courses are taught by skilled staff who have a well-deserved reputation for their enthusiasm and experience and the many thousands of adults attending our courses, bear out our success in providing learning opportunities at a competitive price and to a high standard.
All students are very welcome and our services are accessible to learners at all levels and incomes.
This year we hope that you will see some service improvements which respond to the issues you have raised with us so watch out for the introduction of faster online enrolment; more short courses, especially Saturday classes, and more activities designed to help learners compete for jobs or start up a business.
We look forward to providing a welcoming and friendly service to both new and returning learners.

Concession entitlement explainedThe Skills Funding Agency will only fund tuition fees for those on Active Benefits in 2012/2013. However, Hammersmith & Fulham Adult Learning and Skills Service will still continue to help you financially if you are claiming income-related/means-tested benefit, such as Income Support.
If you are claiming any of the benefits listed below you will be asked to pay the published concessionary fee which represents a registration and exam fee. See below for a list of benefits.
Active benefitsThese benefits are designed to support people who are actively seeking employment. If you are claiming Active Benefits (guaranteed conc. fees) and are enrolling on a qualification course, please let us know as we will be able to claim most of your fees from the funding body. We must have your National Insurance number at time of enrolment.
Financial help for those on Active Benefits may be available to help with additional fees. Active Benefits are:

Class informationOur minimum class size ranges from 8 to 12 depending on the type of class and health and safety requirements. We have planned some courses allowing for lower enrolments but the fees for these courses are higher to reflect this.
If a class doesn’t enrol to minimum agreed level it may, in some instances be possible to keep the class running if all the students agree to pay an additional amount. This can be discussed with the tutor.

Feedback from and to studentsNo hot drinks and food in classroomsVia the student feedback cards many of you have asked us why (as
adults) you can’t take hot drinks and food into classrooms. We think it’s
important you know and understand why we are insisting on this.
Most accidents with hot drinks happen when you move around with them. Hot
drinks cause burns. Drinks get spilt on floors and stairs making them slippery and
dangerous. We have adults with learning and other disabilities and children on these premises
who are particularly vulnerable to these accidents. We have recently refurbished and updated some of our classrooms and we don’t
want spillage, marks and stains from messy food and drinks. We are trying to ensure that you have a safe and pleasant learning and teaching
environment please help us to make this possible. Please keep sending us your comments and feedback and we will
respond. Many thanksJean Milloy Beryl LesterCurriculum Manager Head of Operations and Support

“I’ve always been interested in sewing. My children wanted some new curtains for their room but buying proper ones can be expensive. Watching TV programmes like Kirsty Allsopp’s Handmade Britain inspired me, so I enrolled on a course.
The class was very enjoyable, the teacher very knowledgeable and I’ve made some wonderful, interlined curtains that look beautiful. It feels good to have done it myself!
This year I enrolled on the upholstery class and I am upholstering a chair that belonged to my grandmother. I’ve enjoyed being creative and I intend to keep learning.”

“Many years ago I lived in Syria and worked for the United Nations helping refugees. When I moved to the UK and my husband and I started a family I decided to spend a few years at home with my young children. I now have six children, the oldest is nine, an eight year old and triplets aged six. While my children were young I had my hands full but at the same time I also studied very hard to improve my English.
I am ambitious and I want a good future for my children and myself so I knew it was time to go back to college and get some qualifications and skills, so last year I enrolled on a level 2 childcare course, which I loved.
I spent two days a week in college and one day a week in a work placement. This year I have progressed to the level 3 course which is more challenging but my tutor Iffy is excellent and very supportive.
The reason I chose this college is because of the excellent quality of the course and the high progression into employment for the childcare students. The course includes a business module and my plan is to start my own childcare business straight away.”

“After years working as a solicitor I decided I wanted a career change – I knew I wanted something creative but I just wasn’t sure where to start. That is where the Macbeth Centre helped me, and ultimately changed my life! A year on from my first course at the Macbeth Centre I now work as a cake decorator at the Hummingbird Bakery and I couldn’t be happier with my new career.
Last May I enrolled on a six week evening cake-decorating course at Macbeth with Julia. I had never done anything like it before, but I soon found out that the atmosphere at Macbeth is very supportive and friendly and everyone is very happy to help each other. I loved the course so much that I enrolled on her more advanced course and then a substantial year long cake-decorating course with Patricia who has taught me techniques in royal icing, pastillage and sugar paste and we are now learning wired sugar flowers.
I worked very hard and would go home and practice and practice until I got it right. Once I felt confident I sent photographs of all the cakes I decorated along with my CV to the prestigious Hummingbird Bakery and they offered me a job.
The best thing is that I have been able to completely change careers and I am excited about my career ahead – all thanks to taking a short adult education class and the wonderful tutors at the Macbeth Centre.”

Diploma in public service interpretingTrain as a professional legal interpreter. Previous experience, though useful, is not essential. The course prepares learners for the IoL (Institute of Linguists) DPSI exam in June 2013 through a mixture of practical classroom based activities to improve both translation and interpreting skills and background lectures to deepen their understanding of the English legal system.
Each course will only have speakers of a particular language to maximise practice opportunities and exposure to the target language from the start. Small class sizes (5-10) will enable learners to have greater contact with and feedback from the course tutor. The languages offered are Spanish, Portuguese, French, Polish, Russian and Mandarin Chinese. Full course information is at www.hfals.co.uk. Ask for an application form.
The Diploma in Public Service Interpreting is for anyone wishing to obtain a high level professional qualification in interpreting. All of these DPSI courses are accredited by the Institute of Linguists. Please note there are no concessionary fees available for these courses.

“Dear Ms Colak,
I just wanted to thank you for your kind support and encouragement, for sharing your thoughts and experiences, for helping me regain my self confidence and self esteem, and for following up on me through Mr Denis Jones.
Also, a big thank you for introducing me to the Macbeth Centre and the ‘Write Away’ workshop which has been such a delightful experience with such a supportive tutor and it has been a way of forcing me to pour my thoughts onto paper and that on its own gave me much relief and satisfaction for I consider it an accomplishment.
Take care and keep wearing your lovely smile.”
