SUPPER PROGRAM WISH LIST

The Supper Program continues to provide meals on a take-out basis for approximately 60-70 guests, Monday-Friday, from 5:30 to 6:30pm. We thank the wonderful volunteers who serve on an as-needed basis, and the incredible product donors, like Wegmans through Samaritan Harvest, Palmer’s, Baker St. Bakery, and Evening Star Coffee in Avon that supply the foods needed to provide meals. During this time of suspended Masses, which include monthly second collections at Blessed Sacrament, the program would benefit from additional donations, which can be sent to the parish office: Blessed Sacrament Supper Program, 259 Rutgers St., Rochester, NY 14607. The current wish list includes: takeout containers, cookies, Ziploc bags (small size for cookies and bread), salad dressings, olives, lettuce, tomatoes, tuna, elbow macaroni, mayo, egg noodles, hearty soups, ketchup and parmesan cheese. If you can provide any of these items, please contact Mary Jo at [email protected] or by phone at 585-442-5279, to arrange the donation of wish list items. We thank you for your support! We thank those community members who have been so generous with their donation of food items.

Faith Formation Information We are planning for summer and beyond! We (Faith Formation personnel from several parishes) have some fun, safe ideas for Vacation Bible Camp. More information will be coming with ideas of options for classes in the upcoming school year. Like everyone, we are dealing with many unknowns about what the future holds. But, trusting in God’s love and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we walk by faith into the future with confidence. Watch for more information from me and share what you received with neighbors or family members who may be new to our parish family or looking for a church community to join.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

(taken from Morning and Evening Prayer of the Sisters of Mercy)

“Spirit of God, come and transform us. Stir up in us an ardent

desire to do your will and bring about the reign of mercy and

justice. Holy Spirit, praying unceasingly within us, give our

tongues the words to praise you, our hearts the fervor to love

you. Sanctify the work of our lives that all our acts may give

glory to God, today and always. Abide with us that we may abide

with you. This we ask in faith. AMEN.”

HOW ARE YOU SPENDING YOUR QUARANTINED TIME? WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHILE STAYING HOME? Karen and Megan Kilmartin report that this 750 piece puzzle was HARD and are now ready to “burn it”. So much for the thought that a jigsaw puzzle can be relaxing!!

A Word From Father John...

I am happy that all of our collective efforts at social distancing, wearing face masks, washing our hands and the like are starting to bear results in terms reaching a point in the midst of the pandemic where the restrictions are beginning to be eased. The decision late last week to permit gatherings of ten people with appropriate social distancing initially in the context of religious services and then expanded to secular contexts as well has only spurred our eagerness to return to celebrating Mass in our churches. This may be all the more so, since prior indications had been that we would not be returning to liturgies in our churches until Phase IV of the NYS “re-opening” plan, New York Forward. While I too look forward to that day when we gather to celebrate the source and summit of our faith in the Eucharist, I also am aware that we will be returning to Mass in a very different context that requires prudent and thorough planning in preparation to do so.

At this time, our parish is not ready to begin public Mass with no more that 10 people present. We still are working to meet all of the stipulations laid out in the bishop’s memo of May 14, 2020, along with those added by his memo of May 21, 2020. It appears that we are closer to securing sufficient quantities of hand sanitizer to be offered and used by all who enter our church buildings. But we are still in the process of identifying and securing sufficient quantities of sanitizer and other supplies required to sanitize our church facilities after each liturgy, with particular concern for protecting the health of those who will perform the sanitizing and our congregants, as well as the finish of our wooden pews and other items. At the same time, there are number of logistical and practical steps that need to be completed. Among these are: (1) Determining the seating configuration and capacity of our churches based on maintaining a minimum of six-feet of separation required for proper social distancing; (2) Determining the best and most efficient way to usher people in and out of church and approach Holy Communion while maintaining social distancing; (3) Setting up a fair and equitable “reservation and ticketing” system that limits attendance to permitted levels; (4) Developing a safe process of cleaning and disinfecting all “touch” surfaces after every liturgy: (5) Recruiting, equipping and training “non-vulnerable” parishioners to carry out the cleaning and disinfecting process for each church; (6) Preparing the church buildings and grounds by removing unnecessary chairs, tables, furniture, along with all missalettes, hymnals, and pew cards, by closing off spaces (e.g. cry rooms, nurseries, unused spaces), by cordoning off unused pews and marking aisles to assist with proper social distancing; by obtaining sufficient receptacles for people to deposit collections (no passing the basket at offertory), and by placing six foot markers outside entrances to church to assist with social distancing as people wait to be “checked-in” upon arrival for Mass; (7) Recruiting, equipping and training “non-vulnerable” parishioners to assist with “crowd control”: welcoming, hand sanitizing, assigned seating, communion procession, and orderly dismissal from pews at end of Mass; and (8) Communicating all the changes, expectations and requirements involved in celebrating Mass in church during a pandemic clearly to all those considering joining us, and through signage at church.

As the bishop makes clear in his memorandum, our parish cannot begin celebrating public Masses in our churches until we are able to meet all necessary diocesan policies and guidelines which are spelled out in the attachments to his memorandum. I assure you that we will be working as expeditiously and prudently as possible to meet those requirements. If you would like to assist with any of these, especially preparing the church building, sanitizing after liturgies, or assisting with “crowd control,” please contact Sue Howard, (585-271-7240 ext. 123; [email protected]).

As those diocesan policies and guidelines make clear, our experience of the Mass will be different in a number of ways. There will be no social gathering inside or outside, before or after Mass. Everyone who comes to church must bring and wear a facemask from the moment they arrive until they depart. Everyone will be asked to use hand sanitizer provided by the parish as they enter church. Households and individuals will be directed where to sit by specially designated ministers. The number of liturgical ministers will be limited, at least initially. The collection will be deposited in receptacles not taken up by ushers. There will be no processions at start or end of Mass or offertory. Those receiving Holy Communion will be invited by specially designated ministers a pew at a time to form single file line in center aisle maintaining six-foot social distancing as they approach priest. At end of Mass, congregation will be dismissed by pew by specially designated ministers to assure proper social distancing. Like other businesses and organizations that have sought to have larger numbers of people gather, we have been asked to make some changes to how we do things in order to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. We may not like them or feel that they are an infringement of our rights. But we endure them in pursuit of a greater good in seeking to celebrate Mass together as church.

While the easing of restrictions may have begun, we are still in the midst of a pandemic that requires us to move with all due prudence and care to protect the health and welfare of everyone, especially those who are especially vulnerable to the effects of this deadly disease. I would ask for your patience and understanding as we endeavor to get this right the first time, knowing that mistakes may have tragically deadly consequences for some and may result in a return to suspension of public Masses and long term negative repercussions for our parish churches.

Please keep reading our parish bulletin and twice-per-week email newsletters in order to keep posted on our efforts and any further developments.

In addition to these efforts, we are in the process of interviewing candidates to fill the new positions on our parish staff that are the result of Sue Howard and Deacon David Palma’s impending retirements on June 30, 2020, as well as all the other pastoral demands of our parish.

On this Pentecost Sunday, may the Holy Spirit come down upon us to inspire and guide our efforts as the Holy Spirit has done for all members and leaders from the time of the earliest beginnings of the Church.

Yours, Fr. John

RENEWING & REFRESHING ADULT FAITH

Reflection on Staying at Home

This time of staying at home has been a blessing in disguise. As much as I miss seeing my friends at school and dance, I have been able to enjoy other parts of my life that I usually don’t make time for. Since quarantine started, my mom has invited me to go for MANY walks. I am very fortunate to live right behind Highland Park. At the beginning of April, when I walked through the park with my mom, we noticed these beautiful little blue and white flowers. There must have been thousands! They covered most of the grass! We had never seen them before. We think the reason we had never seen them before, is because we never go for walks at that time of the year. We are so wrapped up with school and work that we didn’t make time to go for a walk. Since the beginning of April, I have been able to see many flowers blossom that I have never taken the time to notice before. Even though the Lilac Festival was canceled, I will still be lucky enough to observe the lilacs bloom. I will miss the fried food, though. Staying at home has made me appreciate the outdoors and the beauty it offers.
