My dear parishioners, One of the great parts about the conference each year in Steubenville is the ability to pray with dif-ferent men from around the country. Priests, deacons and seminarians come from all across the United States and from Canada. Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, we have holy hours before the Blessed Sacrament. It is a joy to hear the voices of 140 men sing together prais-ing the Lord. As I mentioned in my homily a few weeks ago, many of the men this year looked so tired and beaten down. Many of them shared that it had been a difficult year in ministry. A major part of it is that there are fewer priests available so many men car-ried the load that in the past had been shared. Being able to lift my brothers in prayer was one of the high-lights of the week. On Thursday evening, we had a healing service. One older priest came over to me and just asked me to pray over him. I laid hands on his shoulders as he kneeled down and the music played. I could feel the weight he was carrying and I asked the Lord to lighten his load. I was moved to see how many of the men, who at the beginning of the week looked so beaten, were able to walk tall and rejoice in the Lord’s love. There is no substitute for prayer. Prayer is the food of the soul and God is the center of the soul. Without that constant communication with our Almighty Father, we will not be able to carry the burdens thrust upon us. The con-ference is a time to remind us of the joy of prayer and what we can accomplish when we do pray and pray well. One of the great examples given to us was in a talk by Dr. John Bergsma on St. Barnabas. St. Barna-bas, whose name means “son of encouragement” is a major figure in the early church and is prominent in the Acts of the Apostles. Dr. Bergsma showed us how St. Barnabas was a constant source of encouragement in the early days of the church and how he was instru-mental in inviting St. Paul to participate in the procla-mation of the Gospel. He even pointed out that with-out St. Barnabas, St. Paul might not have ever been trusted by the other leaders of the church. The charge then was for us to be like St. Barnabas to encourage others, especially in the living of the Gospel, but to do so with joy. I pray that St. Barnabas may help us in the living out of our universal call to holiness and to en-courage others to do so. God bless, Fr. O’Connor

Mis queridos feligreses, Una de las partes importantes de la conferencia cada año en Steubenville es la capacidad de orar con dife-rentes hombres de todo el país. Sacerdotes, diáconos y seminaristas vienen de todo Estados Unidos y de Canadá. Martes y miércoles en la noche, tenemos Horas Santas ante el Santísimo Sacramento. Es una alegría escuchar las voces de 140 hombres cantando juntos, alabando al Señor. Como les mencioné en mi homilía hace unas semanas, muchos de los hombres este año se veían muy cansados y abatidos. Muchos compartieron que ha sido un año muy difícil en el ministerio. Una gran parte es que hay menos sacerdotes disponibles así que, muchos hombres llevan la carga que en el pasado era compartida. Poder levantar a mis hermanos en oración fue uno de los momentos más destacados de la semana. El jueves en la noche, tuvimos un servicio de sanación. Uno de los sacerdotes mayor que yo, se me acercó y me pidió que orara por él. Yo coloqué mis manos sobre sus hombros en lo que se arrodilló y se escuchaba la música. Yo pude sentir el peso que él estaba cargando y le pedí al Señor que aliviara su carga. Me conmovió ver como muchos de los hombres, que al principio de la semana se veían tan abatidos, po-dían caminar altos y con regocijo en el amor del Señor. No hay substitución para la oración. La oración es el alimento del alma y Dios es el centro del alma. Sin esa comunica-ción constante con nuestro Dios Todopoderoso, no sería-mos capaces de llevar las cargas sobre nosotros. La confe-rencia es un tiempo para recordarnos la alegría de la ora-ción y lo que podemos conseguir cuando oramos y ora-mos bien. Un gran ejemplo que se nos dio fue en la charla del Dr. John Bergsma acerca de San Bernabé. San Bernabé, nombre que quiere decir “hijo de aliento” es una gran figura en la iglesia primitiva y muy destacado en los He-chos de los Apóstoles. El Dr. Bergsma nos mostró como San Bernabé fue una fuente constante de aliento en los princi-pios de la iglesia y fue instrumental en invitar a San Pablo a participar en la proclamación del Evangelio. El inclusive señaló que sin San Bernabé, no hubieran confiado en San Pablo los líderes de la iglesia. Se nos encargó entonces que seamos como San Bernabé animando a otros, especial-mente viviendo el Evangelio, haciéndolo con alegría. Yo oro para que San Bernabé nos ayude a vivir nuestro lla-mado universal a la santidad y a animar a otros a hacerlo también. Dios les bendiga,
