Heavenly Father, You sent Your Son to save us and thus establish the Church as the Bride of Christ. Your Church is in need of servant leaders who will spend their lives in witness of their faith. We beg You for good and holy priests. In every age, You call men who follow Jesus to become servants and shepherds of Your people. You also call women to embrace a religious community and in doing so, to serve Your Church in love and charity. Send forth Your Ho-ly Spirit and open their hearts to Your call and give these men and women the courage to give their lives completely to Jesus Christ. Be their rock of refuge and their light as they discern. Help us to support them on their journey, and to love them as His disciples. Give them the grace to guide the Church to fol-low Christ more closely. We ask you this in the name of Jesus Christ, the High Priest who intercedes for us before Your heav-enly throne. Amen.

Loving God, as Your Son hung upon the cross, He entrusted His Disciples to the tender care of His mother and thus formed from His own suffering a family of faith for all those who believe in Him. Help us now to embrace one another as brothers and sisters and strengthen the family Christ has called us to be. In the midst of our sadness, may we find comfort in the Virgin Mother’s arms. May we walk togeth-er to encounter the risen Christ in our hearts and in one another. And may the Holy Spirit unite us as we give witness to You, our God and Father, through Christ our Lord. Amen

MERCY’S MEASURE “Our Sacred Honor”
The Declaration of Independence of the American colonies has three major parts to it: 1) acknowledging the rights of people; 2) enumerating the grievances against the British Crown; and 3) the pledge of the signers to achieve the independence they have declared. We all are familiar with the phrase “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This phrase is in the first part of the Declaration and states that these “rights” are given to us. But the founders did not end their document solely relying upon the gifts God provided. After listing their grievances, the founders then declared what they were willing to do in order to realize the independence that they proclaimed. They end the document by writing, “with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” Where before the three gifts are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness, there is now a three-fold pledge: “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” Anyone who studies the Revolutionary War knows the great sacrifices made in lives lost and fortunes ruined. By any measure, these two pledges alone show the cost of obtaining what should have been an “unalienable right.” The third pledge, “our sacred Honor,” which for my generation at least, is far more important than either life or fortune, tells us that they were willing to sacrifice everything to win their independence. In our day, throughout most of the Americas, Independence Day and Liberty are wildly celebrated by the great-great-great grandchildren of the founders. We did not “win” this independence; it is a gift bestowed upon us by generations past. And although our independence was actually threatened on January 6th when people tried to stop the certification of the election, the insurrection lasted only a short time. Every country in the Americas has had this same experience: that someone should try (sometimes succeed) to steal the independence we now take for granted. Sadly, most people just sit by, protecting their own lives and fortunes, but not their sacred honor. Instead of being honorable, political affiliations, conspiracy theories and just plain greedy selfishness have stained the gift that once shone brightly for all the world to see. As always, the Gospel today gives us insight not only to our current experience, but also calls us to grow in our understanding of God. Today, we hear Jesus remarking that “a prophet is not without honor except in his native place.” He, of course, is responding to the crowds who failed to accept His wisdom because He astonished them. We are beginning a new parish community, one where the people of Resurrection and Immaculate Heart of Mary join together with Our Lady of Mercy to rebuild the Church of Chicago by becoming disciples on mission. In order to accomplish this task, we already know that we must live as a community of faith and that we must offer from our own fortunes (or lack thereof) support to this new parish. More importantly, we must honor one another’s astonishing history and wisdom and faith if we are to truly honor Christ. Peace,
LA MEDIDA DE LA MERCED “Nuestro Sagrado Honor”
La Declaración de Independencia de las colonias americanas tiene tres partes principales: 1) el reconocimiento de los derechos de las personas; 2) la enumeración de las acusaciones contra los repetidos agravios y usurpaciones de la Corona Británica; y 3) el compromiso de los firmantes de conseguir la independencia que habían declarado. Todos estamos familiarizados con la frase ‘dotados por su Creador de ciertos derechos inalienables; que entre estos están la vida, la
libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad’. Esta frase está en la primera parte de la Declaración y afirma que estos “derechos” se nos dan. Pero los fundadores no terminaron su documento confiando únicamente en los dones que Dios proporcionó. Después de enumerar sus acusaciones, los fundadores declararon lo que estaban dispuestos a hacer para obtener la independencia que habían proclamado. Terminan el documento escribiendo, ‘con absoluta confianza en la protección de la Divina Providencia, empeñamos nuestras vidas, nuestras fortunas y nuestro sagrado honor’. Y aunque nuestra independencia en realidad se vio amenazada el 6 de enero cuando la gente trató de detener la certificación de la elección, la insurrección duró poco tiempo. We would like to encourage families to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life and to ask their children if they have an interest in learning more about a religious vocation.
Each week, a family at Mass will be invited to take home the “Vocation Chalice and Paten” which comes from Jerusalem. Each day, we ask the family to say a special vo-cations prayer, to pray for our priests, our deacons, the religious sisters, and mission-aries like Father Zacharias in Tanzania. My name is Fr. Leonel Sepulveda, and I am very excited to meet and get immersed in the community of Our Lady of Mercy Parish. I was born and raised in the state of Jalisco in Mexico, my parents are Gabriel and Ana Sepulveda. My early education took place at the local parochial school, where I learned and fell in love with our Catholic faith. As a child, multiple subjects and topics seemed interesting to me, but, especially after making my First Communion, the priesthood began to represent something quite special for me. I loved what parish priests did at the altar, at school, and else where, as they ministered to people in all sorts of situations. It was thus that my vocation to be a priest began to grow in my heart.
When I was 16 years-old, my entire family and I moved to the Chicago area permanently to begin a new life. Being only a sophomore in high school, I dedicated all my time to learning English and studying all the regular subjects in order to gradu-ate, knowing, all the while, that I still wanted to enter seminary and study for the priesthood. Upon graduation, I applied and entered St. Joseph College Seminary at Loyola University where I began formation and philosophy studies. Four years later, I entered Mundelein Seminary. I was ordained a transitional deacon in August of last year and a priest this past May. I hope I can get to know this community right away, as I learn to be a priest with you!

Mi nombre es el Padre Leonel Sepúlveda y estoy muy emocio-nado de conocer y sumergirme en la comunidad de la Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Merced. Nací y crecí en el estado de Jalisco en México, mis padres son Gabriel y Ana Sepúlveda. Mi educación temprana comenzó en la escuela parroquial local, donde aprendí y me enamoré de nuestra fe católica. Cuando era niño, múltiples temas me parecían interesantes, pero, especial-mente después de hacer mi Primera Comunión, el sacerdocio comenzó a representar algo muy especial para mí. Me encantó lo que los párrocos hacían en el altar, en la escuela y en otros lugares, ya que ministraban a las personas en todo tipo de situa-ciones. Fue así que mi vocación al sacerdocio comenzó a crecer en mi corazón.
Cuando tenía 16 años, toda mi familia y yo nos mudamos a Chicago permanentemente para comenzar una nueva vida. Siendo sólo un estudiante de segundo año en la escuela secun-daria, dediqué todo mi tiempo a aprender inglés y estudiar todas las materias regulares con el fin de graduarme, sabiendo, todo el tiempo, que todavía quería entrar en el seminario y estudiar para el sacerdocio. Después de graduarme, apliqué y entré en el Seminario ‘St. Joseph College’ en la Universidad Loyola, donde comencé estudios de formación y filosofía. Cuatro años más tarde, entré en el Seminario Mundelein. Fui ordenado diácono transicional en agosto del 2020 y sacerdote en mayo del 2021. ¡Espero poder conocer a esta comunidad prontamen-te, ya que mi deseo es aprender a ser un sacerdote con ustedes!

La liturgia, por su propia definición, es el pueblo orando jun-tos. A diferencia de las devociones, las liturgias, especialmente la Misa (o liturgias eucarísticas) son momentos en que la oración común, las palabras comunes son importantes. En la liturgia, cada participante tiene su propia parte: uno puede leer la Palabra de Dios, otro puede ayudar a recoger las ofrendas, otro responde a la invitación a orar por invitación del sacerdote o diácono. Según el Concilio Vaticano II, la Eucaristía es “la fuente y cumbre de la vida cristiana”. Como la “fuente”, la Eucaristía nos inspira a unir nuestras vidas a Cristo, a abrazar la misión de Cristo de evangelizar el mundo y de llevar a Cristo a los demás. Como la “cumbre”, la Eucaristía es la forma más elevada de alabanza que podemos dar a Dios, el momento en que estamos más cerca de Dios mientras estamos vivos, y el tesoro más pre-cioso entre todos nuestros dones espirituales y bendiciones. La Eucaristía es Cristo verdaderamente presente en forma de pan y vino, el Hijo de Dios viene a nosotros en una manifestación física. El Prólogo en el Evangelio de Juan nos recuerda que “todas las cosas llegaron a ser a través de Él y sin Él, nada llegó a ser”. El Hijo de Dios es la fuente de toda vida; así, la Eucaristía es también la fuente de vida cristiana. En el Evangelio de Mateo (28,18), Jesús dice, “todo poder en el cielo y en la tierra me ha sido dado”. Por lo tanto, Él es también la cumbre de nuestras vi-das, ya que Él preparará un lugar donde vivamos para siempre. (Jn 14,2-3) La Liturgia Eucarística no es la adoración de Jesús, como algunas personas piensan. No es una repetición de la Última Cena como otros creen erróneamente. Jesús no “se sacrifica de nuevo” durante la Misa. Más bien, la Eucaristía es la liturgia donde esta-mos unidos a la Pasión de Cristo, donde el tiempo y el espacio se abren para que podamos estar con el Señor y todos Sus discípulos de manera como Él se ofrece como propiciación de nuestros pe-cados. Pero la Eucaristía requiere nuestra plena participación, tal como los Apóstoles participaron en la Última Cena. Nosotros también debemos tomar el pan que se ha convertido en el Cuerpo de Cristo y comerlo; nosotros también debemos beber el vino que se ha convertido en la Sangre de Cristo. Adorar a la Eucaristía es consumir lo que se nos da. No se limite a sostenerlo, o levantarlo, o arrodillarse ante ella como si usted fuese indigno. No, escuche a Jesús: tomen y coman. ¡Así es como debemos adorar la Eucaristía!
Liturgy, by its very definition, is the people praying together. Unlike devotions, liturgies, especially Mass (or Eucharistic liturgies) are times when common prayer, common words are important. In liturgy, each participant has her own part: one may read the Word of God, another may help collect the offerings, another responds to the invitation to pray extended by the priest or deacon. According to the Second Vatican Council, the Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life.” As the “source,” the Eucharist inspires us to unite our lives to Christ, to embrace Christ’s mission to evangelize the world, and to bring Christ to others. As the “summit,” the Eucharist is the highest form of praise we can give to God, the moment when we are closest to God while alive, and the most precious treasure among all our spiritual gifts and blessings. The Eucharist is Christ truly present in the form of bread and wine, the Son of God come to us in a physical manifestation. The Prologue in John’s Gospel reminds us that “all things came to be through Him and without Him, nothing came to be.” The Son of God is the source of all life; thus, the Eucharist is also the Christian life. In Matthew’s Gospel (28:18), Jesus says, “all power in heaven and earth has been given to me.” Thus, He is also the summit of our lives for He will prepare a place for us to live forever. (Jn 14:2-3) The Eucharistic Liturgy is not the worship of Jesus, as some people think. It is not a repetition of the Last Supper as others mistakenly believe. Jesus does not “sacrifice Himself again” during the Mass. Rather, the Eucharist is the liturgy where we are joined to Christ’s Passion, where time and space are broken open so that we may be with the Lord and all His disciples as He offers forever Himself in forgiveness of our sins. But the Eucharist requires our full participation, just as the Apostles participated at the Last Supper. We, too, must take the bread that has become Christ’s Body and eat it; we, too, must drink the wine which has become Christ’s Blood. To worship the
Eucharist is to consume what is given to us. Do not simply hold it, or raise it up, or kneel before it as if you are unworthy. No, listen to Jesus: take and eat. That is how we worship the Eucharist!

Para usted, registrarse como miembro significa que usted tiene una familia parroquial un lugar donde su voz y sus oraciones son escuchadas. Si se le pide ser un padrino o madrina, si usted necesita una carta de apoyo o de referencia para inmigración, si tiene una entrevista de trabajo o una aplicación de la Universidad, éstas cartas sólo se pueden escribir para feligreses registrados atestiguando la frecuencia o cuán bien la persona practica su fe.
