The present progressive is the present tense of estar and a present participle, which in English means ―to be doing.‖ The present participle is the –ing ending in English. In Spanish the present participle ending for –ar verbs is –ando, and for –er/-ir verbs is –iendo. There are no stem changes for –ar/-er verbs.

Verbs that end in –er/-ir and have a vowel ending on the stem take on the present participle ending –yendo instead of –iendo.
Verbs that use –yendo include caer(se), construir, creer, ir, leer, oír, and traer. The past participle of ir is ―yendo‖ but it is almost never used.
Example: I am reading. = Estoy leyendo.
Stem-changing –ir verbs stem-change in the present participle. Verbs that change e—ie and e-i in the present tense change e-i in the present participle.
Verbs that are o—ue in the present tense change o—u in the present participle. Other verbs that have spelling changes include decir, venir, and poder—diciendo,

The preterite show completed action in the past; it has a definite beginning and end. We know exactly how long or how many times it occurred.
