PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS: The May Tech Session
was a productive one.
Two members now
have working
hydraulics in their
Healeys. Next Tech Session is scheduled for June 6th,
12:00 noon, at 2177 West 2200 South. The main subject
is to make an attempt at breaking a rear differential’s
habit of marking its territory.
If it wasn’t for Tech Sessions this year, the Hundred
would be languishing in the garage. At least the weather
has been dry enough to go to the Sessions. We drove to
the May meeting in the Hundred, but as we approached
the half way mark, the weather turned really wild. The
winds and rain were so bad that Sandy thought that a
tree was going to fall on us. The rain blew horizontally
through the side. I hadn’t put in the side curtain.
The Brighton/Silver Fork drive also had inclement
weather forecast. The Club still did the drive, or at least
part of it. As a group, we decided to skip the top of the
canyon, and just stop at for lunch. We missed all you fair
weather people.
For those of you who missed the May meeting. Doug
Lewis was there, looking very good after his fight with
CCS, (Cancer, Chemo, and Surgery). I’m sure he will be
even better looking than before.
I called Don Hughes the other day. He is doing fine for
just having a heart valve replaced. His doctor said that
with the amount of calcification on his valve he was only
a week or two from having a major problem. Don was
very lucky to have a personal physician who spotted his
problem when he did. Get Well Soon.
June 20th is the annual BCMU Field Day at Liberty Park. I
am planning on attending. I hope to see a large
contingent of Healeys there.
Healey on up to the Citris Grill on June 9th.
Happy Healeying.

EDITOR’S COMMENTS:
Shortly after this issue
is published, I’m set to
undertake one of my
major “Bucket List”
trips. Some of you
know that I’m a big fan of European motorcycle
road racing. For the last year, my son and I have
been planning a trip to the Isle of Man for the TT
races. If you are not familiar with the Isle of Man, it
is an island situated in the Irish Sea between
England and Ireland. Since 1907, except for the war
years in WWI and WWII and one year for a “mad
cow” quarantine, the TT has been held. It is run on
a 38 mile street and road course that runs through
villages and over the mountains on the island.
Famous winners include Geoff Duke, John Surtees,
Mick Hailwood, Giacomo Agostini, Joey Dunlop,

John McGuinness and many more motorcycle
legends. The Isle of Man has about 75,000 full time
residents and adds over 35,000 spectators and
racers for the TT.
In addition to Healeys, most of us are, to some
extent, Anglophiles. The sports cars and motorcycles
of the 50’s and 60’s were amazing and are still
amazing now. Just go to British Field Day to see
what I mean. British racetrack names such as
Brands Hatch, Silverstone, Goodwood, and Thruxton
are well-known in the United States. The music of
the “British Invasion” in the 60’s and 70’s was the
soundtrack of our lives. James Bond, Sherlock
Holmes, Monty Python, Peter Sellers, John LeCarre,
the Royal Family and many other British icons are
favorites in the U.S. I’ve always been interested in
all things British. I’m not sure if my interest in
Healeys was a result of this interest or if this interest
was the result of my love for Healeys. Anyway, I’m
looking forward to my trip and wish I could make a
visit to Warwick to see the Healey works in its
prime.
I received an email from Paul Klein, who is a friend
of David George, indicating that he would like to
purchase a 50’s-70’s Jaguar either an “E” type or a
XK120/140/150 or a Big Healey. If you can help, he
can be reached at [email protected].

TECH SESSION- May 2, 2015
There’s always something new to learn about
Healeys and the latest Tech Session was no
exception. The day dealt with problems such as
steering issues at slow speed (Ernie Reno) and how
to rebuild clutch and brake master cylinders (Jim
Thornton and Craig Ward). We learned to read and
be very careful with the descriptions contained in
the master cylinder rebuild kits from the Moss
Motors catalog. We were also shown upright
hydraulic fluid bleeding techniques to be used
before re-installing the master cylinders in the cars.
Attendees included Dave Maxwell, Ernie Reno, Craig
Ward, Jim Thornton, Glenn Schimmelpfennig and
Craig Mossberg.

Silver Fork Lodge-May 16
Nine hardy souls and their BJ-9's of various flavors
met up at the parking lot at the base of Big
Cottonwood Canyon at 10 am on May 16. It is well
that we took the weather forecast seriously as it
proved to be on target. At the base, it was decided
to go only as far as Silver Fork Lodge and there was
no argument on that suggestion. It was pretty much
dry on the drive up but started to snow lightly as we
approached Silver Fork Lodge. A little later, the
snow picked up but was never what one would call
"significant" and the temperatures were such
that nothing was sticking. With a fire in the fireplace
inside the lodge and snow outside, it was
more winter-like than in January and February.
Conversation was lively and broad ranging...from
proper care and maintenance of Healeys to
overpowered Bugeyes and Prince to the size of the
trees that gave their all for the parking barriers just
in front of the lodge. Attendees included Ernie and
Vickie Reno, Dave and Sandy Maxwell, Craig and
Linda Lee, Terry and Peggy Hartt and Jon Hanson.

Origin of Words and Phrases
*HOT OFF THE PRESS* As the paper goes through the rotary printing press friction causes it to heat up. Therefore, if you grab the paper right off the press it is hot. The expression means to get immediate information.
*CURFEW* The word "curfew" comes from the French phrase "couvre-feu", which means "cover the fire". It was used to describe the time of blowing out all lamps and candles. It was later adopted into Middle English as "curfeu", which later became the modern "curfew". In the early American colonies homes had no real fireplaces so a fire was built in the center of the room. In order to make sure a fire did not get out of control during the night it was required that, by an agreed upon time, all fires would be covered with a clay pot called-a "curfew".
*HOGWASH* Steamboats carried both people and animals. Since pigs smelled so bad they would be washed before being put on board. The mud and other filth that was washed off was considered useless "hog wash".
