Board of Trustee Report
July 15, 2013
Office of Admissions Due to the hundreds of visits made to high schools/community colleges, there were more than 15,000 prospective students added to the undergraduate recruiting communication plan between July 2012 and July 2013. The 2013-2014 JSU Ambassadors were recognized at the President’s Home on April 9 and had the opportunity for team building and leadership development at their retreat later in the month. JSU Director of Enrollment Management, Andy Green, attended Ellucian Live during April to gain valuable insights on the recently purchased Ellucian Recruiter, a constituent relationship management piece which will drastically change the communication with prospective students. At present, the Division of Information Technology and the Admissions Office are provisioning the system with an expected rollout in September 2013. The JSU Admissions Team as well as several JSU staff members and alumni spent countless early morning and late evening hours presenting scholarship awards to our first time freshmen and transfer students accepted for the fall semester. Their hard work and willingness to present these awards is evidence of their commitment to Jacksonville State University and was greatly appreciated by the students and family members of those receiving awards. In May, the Office welcomed Ms. Crystal Edenfield to the Admissions Team as the Assistant Director of Enrollment Management. She comes to JSU with several years of higher education experience and recently completed her EdS in Higher Education. In June, the Admissions Counselors attended the annual meeting of the Alabama Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (ALACRAO) in Montgomery, Ala. Admissions Counselor Whit McGhee presented “Admissions Counselor – No Experience Necessary” before an audience of several collegiate admissions counselors. At the meeting Director of Enrollment Management, Andy Green, passed President Gavel of ALACRAO to the new President and now serves as Immediate Past President representing the State of Alabama this year to the Southern and American Associations of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. Fall Preview Day is scheduled for the morning of September 28 and will provide prospective students with the opportunity to speak with university representatives from several areas on campus. In addition, they can take a tour of JSU and enjoy our campus on a football game day. Career Services A review of the Self Study for Career Services is complete; the review team conducted an on-site review on May 20-21, 2013. The Self Study Report provided by Career Services served as a guide providing details of the career services processes. Based on the Self Study Report and interview with faculty, staff and students, the Program Review Team has provided observations and made recommendations for the unit. 18 students engaged in the Cooperative Education Program with Anniston Army Depot, Best Buy, Carmin Industries, CK Business Solutions, CVG-Piedmont, GSA, Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, International Automotive Components, Kohler, Noble Bank and Trust, Parker Hannifin, Solutia, Southern Company, and Wakefield’s.
One Cooperative Education Student converted to full-time employment at CVG-Piedmont; 134 new student/alumni user registrations were approved; 142 new jobs were posted for JSU students/alumni. University Police On, April 24, 2013, JSU held a meeting to address recommendations from the Virginia Center for Policing Innovation (VCPI) assessment of the Police Department. The recommendations were as follows: All UPD personnel would take the following two classes online offered by VCPI: Community Policing Defined (completed in May 2013) New Perspectives on Community Policing (completed in May 2013) Dr. Davis would provide additional community police training which has been scheduled for two days to prevent interruptions of services on July 16 and July 19, 2013. Add three additional certified officers to the UPD staff as funding becomes available either through unfilled vacant positions in other areas or through grants. UPD has applied for the COPS Grant which, if awarded, will fund one certified officer for three years. Refine the parking appeals process: Change to one appeals committee for everyone. Committee to contain one each: student, staff and faculty. Those appealing are to submit written documentation as to why the citation should be dismissed using a control number and not appear in person before the committee. UPD recertified on Pressure Point Control & Defensive Tactics on May 13 through 17, 2013. On May 24, 2013, six officers attended Virginia Tech Presentation on active shooter on Collegedale, Tennessee. On May 29, 2013, UPD began the process to replace Officer William Lowe who accepted a position with the Pelham Police Department. UPD completed the yearly training in Police Ethics, Preventing Bias-Based Profiling, Use of Force, and Dealing with Emotionally Disturbed Persons on June 12, 2013. University Housing and Residence Life Staff Report: Mrs. Rochelle Smith, Assistant Director of Staff Development and Community Standards, reported that the following individuals have joined our team as Residence Life Coordinator: Ms. Candice Young at Stadium Tower Ms. Shannon Coleman at Logan and Patterson Halls Mr. Travis Smith was transferred to the Apartment Area from Logan and Patterson Halls. Critical Mass, a program of Photolucida, is about exposure and community. The idea
is simple—photographers (from anywhere) submit a 10 image portfolio. This work is then pre-screened by a committee of approximately 20 great jurors. From those votes, the 200 top Finalists are determined, whose work then goes on to a jury of approximately 200 of the world’s best photography professionals who have agreed to view and vote on the Finalists’ work. The Top 50 are chosen from this group of 200 finalists.
