Holiday offi ce parties are highly anticipated events at many companies. Some busi-nesses prefer to go for broke with regard to their holiday parties, hosting lavish aff airs for employees and clients alike. Other companies opt for more low-key events at-tended only by employees and their signifi cant others.

Those tasked with planning holiday offi ce parties often must make a host of deci-sions, all in an eff ort to en-sure everyone has a good time. That can be a tall task for party planners who work for companies that boast a diverse staff and/or clientele. But the following tips can help those tasked with lay-ing out a holiday offi ce party plan an event that’s festive and enjoyable for everyone.

· Start early. The longer you wait to begin planning the party, the less options you will have at your disposal when you do start to plan. For example, if you wait too long before you start plan-ning, restaurants or banquet halls may already be booked solid on Fridays and Sat-

urdays, the most common nights that holiday offi ce parties are held. So start your planning as early as possible, consulting with the person in charge with regard to the re-sources you will have at your disposal before you begin your research.

· Choose the type of event. Holiday parties do not often change in style from year to year, so this decision may al-ready be made for you. For instance, if last year’s holiday party was an informal aff air for employees only, then this year’s event is likely to fol-low the same formula. But confi rm such details with your superiors. You may have more or less room in the party budget this year, so confi rm the type of party your bosses intend to throw before you begin contacting vendors.

· Choose a date and time for the party. Every employee should be able to attend the holiday party, so try to choose a date and time that is agreeable to everyone. The chances of 100 percent attendance are slim, but

you can still aim for a date and time that works for as many people as possible. If staff members include over-night workers, consult with management to determine if those employees can get the night off to attend the party. Such a gesture will be appreciated by the overnight shift, and it makes it possible for more employees to join in the festivities.

· Make and share your sched-ule for the night. Even the most extravagant holiday of-fi ce parties tend to be some-what loose events, but it’s still important to create a sched-ule so guests know when and where to be at various points throughout the party. In ad-dition to what time the party starts, the schedule should include information about when cocktail hour begins, when food will be served and when any special announce-ments, if any, will be made. The schedule will ensure that no guest feels like he or she missed any important events that unfold during the party.

· Don’t forget entertainment. Entertainment can make

a holiday offi ce party that much more memorable. Large parties may require the services of a professional deejay or live band, while small parties may survive with a portable music player playing holiday music or popular party fare. In addi-tion to music, think up some games to keep guests en-gaged throughout the night. Give prizes, such as an extra day off or gift cards, to em-ployees so they have some-thing to look forward to if they win the games.

· Arrange for transportation. If you plan to serve alcohol during the party, then ar-range to have transportation available after the party for anyone who may need a ride home. It’s fair to assume that some employees may party a little too much, so make sure the night does not take a tragic turn by letting every-one know there is transporta-tion available if they need it.

Using a cell phone, texting and drinking alcoholic bev-erages are all activities that can lead to fi nes or arrest if done while in a moving ve-hicle. But in some areas, it is already illegal or may soon be, to smoke in a vehicle if in the presence of children.

Since 2006, several commu-nities across North America have implemented laws to prevent smoking in cars when children are present, and campaigns for smoke-free car laws are poised to continue.

The public has become in-creasingly aware that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Sec-ondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, includes the smoke that a smoker exhales and the smoke that comes from burning tobacco products.

Thousands of toxic chemicals are present in secondhand smoke, including formalde-hyde, lead, butane, cyanide, and carbon monoxide. These dangerous chemicals can be inhaled and tend to linger in the air for hours or longer. Smoke residue also clings to a smoker’s body and hair and can even surface inside of a home or vehicle, according to The Mayo Clinic.

Asthma, heart disease and cancer may result from con-tact with secondhand smoke. When someone smokes within the small enclosed space of a car, passengers are exposed to air that is many times more toxic than what the EPA considers hazard-ous air quality, even if a win-dow is down. What’s more, the particulates of tobacco smoke that are absorbed in the upholstery off -gas back

THE DANGER OF SMOKING WHILE DRIVING

into the air even after many days have passed, exposing riders to toxins well beyond when someone smoked in the car.

The developing bodies of children and their small stat-ure put youngsters at risk for

greater complications from cigarette smoke, although any passenger is at risk.

Laws vary depending on location and typically ap-ply to children ages 16 and under. Smokers are urged to quit smoking for their health

and the health of others.

But those who continue to

smoke should refrain from

smoking when inside a vehi-

cle, especially when children

are present. SC143038

Rich ConstructionCUSTOM KITCHENS & BATHS

“To make an omelet, you have to break some eggs.” This is the expression 42-year-old Nassau native Rich Zach uses toreassure his customers on construction projects requiring considerable tearing apart as a step in the process. Zach, who has owned his own business, Rich Construction, for 12 years, learned how to do repairs when he was very young.“I worked with my grandmother, who had rental apartments, and learned how to do repairs,” he said. He began to work forhimself after tiring of being laid off and since friends asked him to do work for them. Although he does everything from the ground up, “foundations to roofs,” his favorite jobs are custom trim and tile. “It is moredetailed and not everyone can do it,” he said. 24-year-old Josh Hilton is his “right hand man,” who has been working with him “since he was a little tyke.” Although Hiltonwent to school for carpentry, he said he has learned far more from Zach than anything in school. Zach has owned a home in Nassau for 8 years and done numerous projects there. “I am like a shoemaker with bad shoes,”he said. He removed all the vinyl siding and restored it to the way it looked in the 1920’s, “so you can see the cedar.” His currentproject is finishing the bathroom with glow-in-the-dark tile. “I’d like to thank my customers,” he said, “for keeping me gainfully employed and for helping me raise my kids [16-year-oldtwins Joseph and Kaianna and 15-year-old Katelyn] over the years and for keeping me as their sole contractor.” Zach’s motto is “There is no job too small for me to help my customers with.” Written by Ron Jacob

Dachshund Mix Puppies

Amelia

Tubbs & Ash

This little cutie is a little lab mix who was brought in with 7 siblings. She was the last of her litter to find a forever home. She is up to

date on shots, wormed and vet checked.

Another sad story and way too long to get into. We can only say that these guys were thrown out

of their home into the cold. I can't imagine the fear that they felt after being inside on their favorite chair to one day face the harsh reality that they

could not be indoor kitties anymore. ASAS could not leave them outside. We are filling up very fast and need adoption of our older kitties or else we will not be able to take in and give safe haven to

more babies left out in the cold. Please come and adopt. These guys are up to date on vaccines and

spayed and neutered.

The mother was surrendered when the puppies were three days old. She is a registered red long hair dachshund. She weighs about 9 lbs. (The father was a wire haired Terrier.) She had eight puppies. These are the males. The females

and Mom have already been adopted with Mom going to the foster who took care of them. They were born July 23 and have had 3 vaccinations and

wormed three times.
