PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Thank you for favor received. S.M.C.

Volunteer Tour Guides NeededALBANY – Do you have a passion for local and national history? Are you looking for new pursuits? Why not become a volunteer tour guide at the Shaker Heritage Society? As a guide, you will greet museum visitors and lead tours through America’s first Shaker settlement. Share the unique history of the Shakers, a group that helped to shape local and national his-tory that first settled right here in Albany. You will guide visi-tors on a tour through the Shaker Historic Site to see buildings, the landscape, and the Shaker cemetery. Prior guide experience is helpful but not necessary. Training and orientation is pro-vided to new guides. Tours are offered every Saturday through September 29 at 1pm. If you are interested in becoming a vol-unteer tour guide, or to find out more about the Shaker Heritage Society, please contact Samantha Hall, Education Coordinator, at 456-7890 x23 or [email protected]. Tours begin at the 1848 Shaker Meeting House at the site of America’s first Shaker settlement. The historic site is adjacent to Albany Inter-national Airport off of Heritage Lane. (A)

Borrow a Nook COHOES – The Cohoes Public Library has 2 Nook eRead-ers to loan to patrons 18 yrs. and older with no outstanding fines. These Nooks are each preloaded with a fixed set of varied books and are available for a loan period of 14 days. This is a great opportunity to see if you enjoy the eReader experience. And, if you already have an eReader, the librarians can give you information on how to download library books. See www.CohoesPublicLibrary.org for more information. (A)

Students’ Books on DisplayALBANY – After three months of hard work, more than 220 Troy elementary school students are excited to display their artwork at the Albany Institute of History & Art. The student exhibition of accordion books will be on display during regu-lar museum hours from May 29 through June 3. Students in grades 4 and 5 from the Carroll Hill Elementary School and grades 5 and 6 from School 16 participated in Book Arts in Troy 2012: Arts in Education Partnership from February through May 2012. The children explored book structures through historic and contemporary examples of the book arts. With architecture as inspiration, they created and printed their own accordion books. The program is a celebration of Troy’s heritage, providing a vehicle for children to connect with the history of their city. An exhibition was created and displayed at each school in addition to coming to the Albany Institute. The program was supported by funds secured by the Albany Institute of History & Art from the New York State Council on the Arts and Troy Savings Bank. (P)

Male nurses haven’t always been such a minority. Although men comprise only about 6 percent of today’s total nursing population in the United States, nursing schools for men were actually quite common and about half of the nation’s paid nurses were male during the early 1900s. By 1930, however, the percentage of male nurses dropped to a meager 1 percent, as men fled the profession for more lucrative occupations. That was the case for several decades, until the late 1980s, when inflation, nursing short-ages, a rise in nursing salaries, and shifting attitudes about gender combined to attract new generations of men to the pro-fession.

Research indicates that men and women enter the profession for the same reasons. Both men and women are interested in working with sick and injured people and they are seeking ca-reers that offer challenges, rea-sonable job security and good salaries. And with many parts of the United States and other

More men seeking nursing careers

western nations facing nursing shortages that are expected to peak in the mid-2020s, when much of the current generation of nurses will retire, men will have a vital role to play in fill-ing those gaps. Some research-ers have even predicted that the nation’s ability to handle the projected shortage of nurses hinges on strong increases in the number of males entering the profession.

While the number of men in nursing programs is growing, the public perception of male nurses, which has unfairly car-ried a negative connotation through the years, persists and continues to keep them away from the field. Many male nurses also recount stories of patients assuming they are doc-tors or asking why they had de-cided against attending medical school -- as if being a nurse was

a fallback position rather than a first choice. Others note that the scarcity of male role mod-els, instructors and mentors has made it more difficult not only to enter the profession but also to advance their careers.

At the same time, nursing schools and organizations have launched initiatives aimed at recruiting men, and these ef-forts are paying off, albeit slowly. The population of male nurses is increasing by roughly 2 to 3 percent each year and it has been predicted that by 2020, males nurses will make up about 25 percent of the total nursing workforce. An-other factor that may spur the increase in male nurses is age. On average, male nurses tend to enter nursing at a younger age than female nurses and therefore have the potential for longer careers.

Guys love gadgets. Be it the new-est smartphone or the latest model television, men revel in staying up-to-date on the latest gadgets and giz-mos to hit the market. While many popular gadgets are geared toward entertainment, some are aimed at making life safer for consumers. Such is the case with the following gadgets and innovations, each of which makes the roadways safer for drivers and their passengers.

* Blind spot detectors: Blind spot detectors and intervention systems use radar or image detectors on side mirrors to determine if an object is in the car’s blind spots. Intervention systems are connected to the braking system of the car. The systems pull the vehicle back to safety should the driver attempt to change lanes into potential danger. While this tech-nology has the potential to prevent accidents, sometimes the detectors offer false positive warnings, pick-ing up oncoming traffic, parked cars and even trees.

* Back-up cameras: In an era of monster-sized vans and trucks, some drivers have difficulty gauging the length of the vehicle with respect to items behind it. Also, taller vehicles may have obstructed vision in the back by the rear bumper, which can be a safety hazard should a child or object be in the path of the auto. The camera can provide an image of what’s behind the vehicle to bet-ter assess whether it’s safe to go in reverse. A beeping sound or other signal also may alert to a potential obstruction.

These gadgets make driving safer* Lane departure warning: This mechanism is designed to warn a driver when a vehicle begins to move out of its lane, unless a turn signal is activated to alert to the lane change. These systems use a camera or another tracking device to pick up on the visual lines on a roadway, accommodating for turns. Some will signal with an audible sound, visual notification or a vibration of the steering wheel if the driver is veer-ing into another lane. Other systems will work in concert with the steer-ing to keep the car in its lane.

* Night-vision technology: Individ-uals who do a good portion of driv-ing at night may want to consider night-vision options on a vehicle. This is a system that increases the driver’s perception and seeing dis-tance in darkness or poor weather beyond the scope of headlights. Many systems rely on the driver looking at a screen that portrays a video image, which some assert is a danger in itself because it takes one’s eyes off of the road.
