New research has shown that a chemi-cal compound in beer may be able to improve cognitive function. The beverage once thought to obliterate brain cells when consumed in abundance may actually have the opposite eff ect and boost brain power.
No one should run out an start imbibing just yet, however. The study that ran in Behavioral Brain Research in October 2014 was preliminary and only conducted on lab mice. During the study, scientists discovered that xanthohumol,
a type of fl avonoid found in beer, seemed to improve brain function in the young mice given xanthohumol doses. The cognitive fl exibility of the mice was tested with a specially de-signed maze, and younger mice showed signs of intellectual im-provement. Older mice showed no improvements. Researchers believe xanthohumol and other
fl avonoids, such as those found in red wine, blueberries and dark chocolate, may play a role in helping a person form memories.
The mice were given very high doses of the fl avonoid. A per-son would have to drink roughly 2,000 liters of beer a day to equal what the mice consumed to show improvement. However, should a supplement hit the market down the road, it may just be possible for men and women to con-sume a potentially benefi cial amount of xanthohumol with-out bellying up at the bar.
One of the goals of the xanthohumol study was to exam-ine its potential effi cacy at treating age-related defi cits in memory. Xanthohumol also may benefi t those with meta-bolic syndrome, a condition associated with obesity and high blood pressure, as it can speed metabolism and reduce fatty acids in the liver.
Flavonoids are plant compounds that often provide plants with their color. Scientists have attributed many health ben-efi ts to fl avonoids in foods and plants and have even sug-gested fl avonoids can help in the fi ght against cancer and heart disease. Xanthohumol is rare and is most often found in the hops commonly used to make beer.
While doctors and researchers do not suggest running out and consuming a few six packs right now in the goal of improving brain function and cramming for that next test, xanthohumol may one day be harvested from beer hops to slow down age-related memory defi cits.
CAN BEER BOOST BRAIN POWER?
Consuming excessive amounts of sodium not only aff ects your health but also may aff ect your appearance. A diet that’s rich in sodium has long been linked to a host of health prob-lems, including high blood pressure, stroke, kidney disease, and stomach cancer. But consuming too much sodium also leads to increased water retention, which can cause weight gain and make men and women appear puff y and bloated. According to the American Heart Association, the recom-mended daily sodium intake is 1,500 milligrams. But the AHA
DID YOU KNOW?
notes that the average American consumes more than dou-ble that amount on a daily basis, and Health Canada asserts that Canadians also eat roughly the same amount of sodium each day as their American counterparts. While sodium is an essential nutrient, the human body does not need a lot of it to reap its benefi ts. Bread, processed meats and soups are
some of the major contributors of dietary sodium, so men, women and even children, who the AHA notes are far more likely to develop high blood pressure as adults if they con-sume a high-sodium diet as a child, should study packag-ing on these items to ensure they aren’t overloaded with sodium.

Nikki is an 11 year old female Pomeranian and weighs 23 lbs. She’s a very sweet dog, housebro-ken and walks well on a leash. Nikki is looking for a lap to sit on and someone to take her on walks. She would make a great companion for a senior and she qualifies for our senior program and would be a free adoption to someone over 65 yrs. old. Nikki is spayed, is up to date on her shots and is micro chipped. For more info, please
contact us @ 518-424-2878
Meet Gus! — a great mix of playful kitten, calm lounge cat and enjoyable companion. He’s a mellow, sweet and
relaxed kitten who likes to sit back and watch the all the action around him. Gus loves playing with his toys and
mice but especially enjoys “supervising” his foster siblings (why run around when you can lounge and observe). Gus has super soft bunny rabbit fur with a gorgeous tiger grey coat and tan undertones. He’s loving and enjoys getting attention from his humans but is not the kind
of guy who needs to be on top of you all the time. Gus gets along great with the other kitties in his foster home and would most likely fit in well with any family. Gus is 5 months old (as of Dec 1, 2014). He is neutered, up to date
on his shots and negative for FIV/FeLV.
Sally is a 6 year old female Hound mix and weighs 52 lbs. Sally is a stray from Warren
County. She loves to play with dogs and rides well in a car. Sally is housebroken and crate
trained. We have taken her to adoption clinics and she loves everyone she meets. We are
learning more about her every day and she is doing very well! Sally is spayed, is up to date on her shots and is micro chipped. For more
info, please contact us @ 518-424-2878

AFFORDABLE AND ADORABLE HOMES.D&R Village, a division of UMH Properties, Inc. Clifton Park, NY (518) 383-9977umh.com/community/dr-village
(NAPSI)—Whether you’re considering cashing in on your equity, downsizing, trading up, moving for a change of scenery or relo-cating for better prospects, a few smart investments and improvements can help your home stand out from the competition so you get top dollar. Even if you’re not planning on moving any-time soon, these strategies can maximize your home’s value and increase its mar-ketability:
• Sprucing up the exterior. If you think you’ll have a few years before you move, work on your landscaping now to give plants time to mature. Look for easy-care peren-nials such as hostas, which multiply on their own. If you have less time, you can still achieve a quick makeover by power washing paths and siding, painting or up-grading your front door and
keeping the lawn watered and weeded.
• Removing eyesores inside. Some minor adjustments can help buyers recognize what’s great about your home. Swap outdated fi x-tures, remove wallpaper and give everything a deep clean. Replacements don’t have to be top of the line; they just need to eliminate hang-ups for potential buy-ers.
• Improving the kitchen—to a point. You probably won’t recoup the cost of a full kitchen renovation but smaller projects such as upgrading appliances and painting or refi nishing cabi-nets can modernize the space.
• Refreshing rooms with neu-tral paint. This is a time-hon-ored tip for a reason. While seeing your favorite bold hues on the walls makes you
happy, potential buyers may not agree. A fresh coat of neutral paint can help them envision their own belong-ings in the space.
• Focusing on energy ef-fi ciency. The right energy-smart upgrades can assure buyers they’re seeing an effi cient home where util-ity bills can be minimized. Adding insulation to the attic and walls can make a dramatic improvement in many homes. Consider the windows as well. Adding a heat-rejecting window fi lm such as 3M Sun Control Win-dow Film can reduce cooling costs and typically does not change the windows’ ap-pearance. Since the window fi lm can reject up to 99 per-cent of UV rays, it can protect the investment you made in your hardwood fl oors, rugs, window treatments, furni-ture and artwork.
