Firstly I would like to congratulate all of the Zone pennant winners and wish them luck with the rest of their campaign. I would also like to acknowledge the great achievement of

Jeremy Henry’s hat trick of World Cup victories played at Warilla last month.

As I write this the Senior inter-Zone is well underway at Milton Ulladulla and Lake Conjola Bowling Clubs. There will be a full wrap up of the event in the next edi-tion, but from the action so far we are set to see some great bowls. Both host venues and weather have com-bined forces to provide perfect conditions; the greens are running like lightning.

I heard a great analogy for the Association during the week: like a duck swimming on a lake, all seems calm on the surface but there is furious action happening under the water out of sight. This is very true for our new marketing department who are working on some big initiatives to be revealed later in the year!

At the board meeting this month it was my privilege to congratulate Greg Helm, CEO of our Association, on his 10 years of service. Well done, mate! And our office manager Courtney will reach a significant milestone of 15 years’ service later in this month. We are lucky to have such a wealth of experience ‘behind the scenes’.

I cannot put this edition to bed without acknowledg-ing one of lawn bowls’ all-time greats, Shane Garvey, who announced his retirement from representative bowls recently. Shane has made a fantastic contribu-tion to our game during his representative career, most notably as the skip of the state Keno Blues side; I wish him all the luck in his future endeavours.

See you in the next edition.

Chris Green

CG calls the shots

CG catches up with Jeremy Henry following his third consecutive World Cup Singles victory

Loving bowlsand life

Chris Green: Great to catch up, Jez, and well done on yet another World Title. We have had many of these chats over the years but I thought it’s time that the others got to hear more about the Aussie Jez they love watching on TV and hear from a mile away when you’re yell-ing for a bowl to HURRY!

Firstly we will start with some bowls chat and then move onto your life away from bowls.

Jez, how did you start bowls and how old were you?

Jeremy Henry: Ah, I was 13 years old and started up with my school mates Ian McClure (Macca) and Barry Moffatt. We all started be-cause Ian’s dad was playing at the time.

CG: First coach or mentor?JH: Never really had one. Macca,

Barry and I all just taught ourselves how to play the game.

CG: You have won too many titles for me to name but can you tell me about your first one?

JH: First title would have been the Irish pairs when I was 16 with

Barry Moffatt. Always great winning events with good friends and espe-cially after starting together.

CG: Who would be your biggest inspiration on or off the green?

JH: Definitely my parents. They have supported me from the first day. Mum’s birthday has actually been a good day for me over the years, in 2000 I won the World Outdoor Singles and just this year on Mum’s birthday I won the World Cup Singles.

CG: Carrying the flag at any inter-national event would be an honour but you claimed that honour at the Commonwealth Games. Out of all the sportspeople representing your country it was you who was reward-ed with this amazing honour. How did that feel?

JH: Felt amazing but a funny sto-ry! The night before being asked to carry the flag I had a late night with a couple of the lads. In the morn-ing the Chef de Mission for North-ern Ireland asks for a meeting with me, which I thought was about the late night before and would lead to

Page 5: Bowlsnsw may jun14

BOWLS NSW • MAY-JUN 2014 5

CG calls the shotsa little trouble. To my surprise the only reason was to ask if I would carry the flag and I gratefully ac-cepted.

CG: What made you come to Australia?

JH: After playing numerous events in Australia over the years I had always wanted to move over and play in Australia. The turning point was playing Wayne William Turley in the 2006 Commonwealth Games Gold Medal match, which he luckily won. After that we dis-cussed the idea and kept in touch, finally moving out to Australia with Macca and playing for Taren Point in 2007.

CG: In your first year you helped guide Taren Point to their first Pre-mier League grand final. But it was a year later in the match that eve-ryone will forever talk about where you guided Taren Point to a memo-rable victory in the Grand Final. By memory you had an outstanding rink that day but the shot I will nev-er forget was your backhand run-ner where you turned to the crowd, arms raised and the bowl was only 2 metres out of your hand.

JH: Haha! Yes, that was a great day and I will never forget that. I always like a crowd and that day was no exception. You led on my rink with Baz (Barrie Lester) and Ali (Forsyth). Still can’t believe Ali got player of the day. Haha!

CG: You and your best mate Macca (Ian McClure) have been an amazing pairing over the years both on and off the green. What is your favourite moment with Macca?

JH: Definitely the World Indoor Pairs.

CG: As the only qualifiers ever to win the World Indoor Pairs I know a few funny stories in the lead up to that result. Can you run us through the roll up you and Ian had before heading out for the final?

JH: Haha! Well, as you know, we went out before the game with our opponents and had a roll up on the final rink. We left after 3 ends be-cause we couldn’t get a bowl within 2 yards of the jack.

Come game time and you can say things changed pretty quickly, Macca and I didn’t play a bowl outside a foot. First set was 13-3 and second set we were up 10-nil, the rest is history!

CG: I have seen it firsthand but many ask me, so I’ll ask you. How

can you tell so early on in a bowl’s journey just how close it will finish?

JH: It’s a big UK thing, all the play-ers over there are good. We like be-ing noisy and creating the atmos-phere but don’t want to shout at bad bowls so we learn quick.

CG: As the age creeps up and hav-ing been in Australia for a while now, can you name some of the young talent that has impressed you?

JH: Definitely Omar (Aron Sher-riff), best from all over the world and such a natural talent. Locally though Aaron Teys has really im-pressed me.

CG: OK, that’s it with the bowls stuff, mate. You’re now happily married to the beautiful Natalie. How’s married life treating you?

JH: Next question. Nah, in all se-riousness you know the answer to that buddy. I love it.

CG: How are you handling hav-ing to look after someone other than yourself with the new addition to the family last year of your little puppy AJ?

JH: Haha! Well, he’s a great dog and the story was it was either go-ing to be my first born or first dog named AJ. Nat’s decision and we got a dog, haha!

CG: You’re a big Manchester United supporter and were cop-ping a lot of stick throughout the season. How did you feel about the final result and what chances do you think of MAN U fighting back next year?

JH: Was always going to be hard without Sir Alex but I’m just glad Liverpool didn’t win. I’m sure we will be back bigger and better.

CG: You have jumped on the Souths bandwagon in the NRL.Do you think they will win a comp in your lifetime? They haven’t in mine!

JH: This year!

CG: Finally, mate, I rate you as one of the greatest guys I know both on and off the green, with plenty of Irish wisdom you have taught me over the years. What’s a piece of wisdom you can share for everyone out there?

JH: Live life to the full.

CG: Thanks, mate, as always it been a pleasure and keep up the good work, look after Nat and may-be pitch in with the cleaning and cooking sometime soon, haha!

1/5/2014 Helensvale Claim Championship

Helensvale has claimed three rinks to one to claim the inaugu-ral East Cessnock Bowling Club Invitational 5-a-Side Challenge. Aaron Teys provided the Goril-las with a great win, beating Brett Wilkie 21–18, but Helensvale claimed the final with wins in the pairs 18–14, triples 17–9 and fours 12–7.

1/5/2014 Helensvale v Warilla Final

Helensvale has powered into the final of the East Cessnock Bowling Club Invitational 5-a-Side Chal-lenge, beating the NSW NTC Boys in all four disciplines.

They will play Warilla, who beat Taren Point on shots countback after both sides won 2 disciplines each. Warilla won the pairs and singles, Taren Point the Triples and

Fours, however Warilla progressed courtesy of a 55–52 aggregate score.

1/5/2014 Semi Finals StageThe NSW NTC Boys will take on

Helensvale in the first of the Semi Finals of the East Cessnock Bowl-ing Club Invitational 5-a-Side Chal-lenge.

The NTC Boys – Ben Twist, Co-rey Wedlock, Chris Herden, Jono Davis and Chris Green – will be keen to make a statement against Helensvale, a side which features five Queensland representatives in Brett Wilkie, Anthony Kiepe, Nathan Rice, Anthony Fantini and Mark Casey.

The second semi-final will see Warilla take on Taren Point, anoth-er clash featuring a number of the sport’s biggest names.

Warilla features recent World Cup Champion Jeremy Henry, NSW State Fours runner up Jared Ham-

ilton and two former NSW Junior singles Champions; Jesse Noronha and Aaron Teys, along with NSW Country player Jamie Mitchell.

Taren Point boasts current NSW Bowlers of the year John Green and Wayne Turley, along with New Zea-land International Ali Forsyth and former Welsh International David Axon. Rounding out the Point line up is former NSW representative Cy Threlfall.

30/4/2014 Down to the Business End

After 10 games, the competition is down to the business end.

Helensvale leads the race, ahead of Warilla and the NTC Young Guns (Boys), Mt Lewis, Taren Point and Belrose.

30/4/2014 Helensvale Power To Top of Leaderboard

At the close of Day 2 of the ECBC

5 a side the star studded team from Helensvale have hit the lead in the overall standings. Nipping at their heels are the young guns from NTC and the Taren Point side round out the podium.

Three singles players remain unbeaten – Ali Forsyth, Brett Wilkie and Steve Halmai – giv-ing their sides a solid boost. The pairs are being led by Mt Lewis with Helensvale and the young guns from the NTC side in third. Harbord is the only pairs combi-nation without a win. The triples is being led by Engadine followed by the very consistent Helensvale and Belrose. Three teams have yet to register a win in the triples: Harbord, Mayfield and Beres-field.

In the fours there are still two unbeaten combinations – pow-erhouse Taren Point and Soldiers Point with both of the New Zea-

land teams without a win after 4 rounds. Play starts again at nine this morning with many sides hoping to make day three the money day.

29/4/2014 NTC Young Guns Misfire

The NTC Young Guns suffered a misfire during the opening games of day two of the East Cess-nock Bowling Club Invitational 5-a-Side Challenge.

The Young Guns picked up only two points out of a possible eight, slipping to 7th on the leader board.

Cabramatta was the big mover, scoring maximum points to move to 21 points and top of the table, closely followed by Helensvale on 19, Raymond Terrace and Warilla on 18, with Taren Point, Belrose, NTC Boys and Engadine all on 16 points. Mt Lewis trails this pack by a solitary point. A group of four sides sits on 10 points, including the Australian Ladies side.

29/4/2014 NTC Young Guns Maintain Lead

The ‘Young Guns’ of the NTC

have maintained their sizzling start to the East Cessnock Bowl-ing Club Invitational 5-a-Side Challenge.

After the first day’s play the NTC Boys have a near perfect record, undefeated in the pairs, triples and fours to lead the field, equal on top of the table with Engadine on 14 points.

Cabramatta and Gold Coast powerhouse club Helensvale are next on the table on 13 points, followed by a quartet of clubs on 10 points (Taren Point, Belrose, Raymond Terrace and Warilla).

28/4/2014 NTC young Guns lead the field

The youngest team in the com-petition are off to a flying start at East Cessnock. Though only at the half way mark on day one of the week long ECBC 5-a-Side, the team led by birthday boy Chris Green and Chris Herden that includes Corey Wedlock, Dylan Skinner and Jono Davis would like to hear the final whistle soon-er rather than later.

Leading the tournament on 8 points and a margin of 26 puts them ahead of tournament fa-vourites Helensvale, Taren Point,

both New Zealand teams and the Australian Women’s team. In a star studded field that con-tains many of bowls’ household names, it is a credit to the young guns that they have kept their nerve and got off to a flyer.

The star-studded Australian womens team are strutting their stuff too in preparation for Glas-gow, and at the half way mark of day one find themselves in the middle of the pack on 4 points, ahead of 8 other teams including the surprisingly slow starting Et-talong, Raymond Terrace, Warilla and Nelson Bay.

Warilla Gorillas Aaron Teys and Jeremy Henry with the runner–up trophy

I was recently forwarded a copy of an article published in an independent bowls magazine

which is produced in Queensland and distributed free to clubs (an author was not credited on the copy I received).

The promising headline of the article, ‘The Future of Bowls’, im-mediately grabbed my interest and curiosity. I scrolled down the page with anticipation, eager to be enlightened by creative ideas and initiatives or perhaps a totally new perspective on ways to modernise bowls and ensure its longevity.

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be. Instead, I found myself reading an all-too-familiar anecdotal negative critique focused on the challenges the sport faces today in contrast to the ‘good old days’ of the past.

As usual there was an empha-sis on the shortfalls and failures of state and national administra-tions as well as the ‘largely incom-petent boards and committees perpetuating the mistakes of the past’, stating that administration of lawn bowls had remained largely the same as it was sixty years ago, which as the article surmises in its very first paragraph, ‘is the major reason why the sport is in decline’.

Aside from its ‘anti-establish-ment agenda’, in short the article tells us that the future of the sport is ‘probably doomed’ but things could be turned around; if the ex-isting members and the authori-ties were ‘willing to cater for the younger generation of mature adults’; if we focus less on junior bowls; if ladies played champion-ships on weekends; if the duration of club competitions were short-ened by restricting entries in con-current events and if the Queens-land State Championships were run the same as in NSW!

The article concluded by com-menting; ‘One thing is certain. If some changes are not implement-ed, bowls will never advance and the decline will continue’.

Unfortunately for many of our sport’s publicity officers or col-umnists, the urge to criticise, ‘fin-ger-point’ and publicise a negative perception of our sport and its administration seems to be much more empowering than offering any evidence-based or construc-tive solutions to real issues or writ-ing articles which (dare I say it) focus on the many positive aspects of the sport.

Over the past few months, the

Bowls NSW Communications and Marketing team have under-taken a project to develop a range of marketing resources with con-sistent key messages and imagery that can be used to promote the sport to the public to challenge negative perceptions.

The research conducted on this project brought into perspective the many positive health and social benefits that we all gain from being involved in the sport and the wider bowls community. As bowlers and administrators, we generally take these benefits for granted and far too often we spend our time focused on criti-cism, and dealing with negative or petty issues, which as high-lighted by ‘the Future of Bowls’ article, only promulgates the idea that the sport is doomed.

We all have a responsibility to be positive ambassadors and advocates for our clubs and for bowls at all times, especially those with the power of the pen or the opportunity to speak to the masses.

One thing is certain. If positive change can be implemented; bowls will advance, and it will grow well into the future.

Seven Commonwealth Games debutants were among the 17 bowlers named in the Austral-

ian Bowls Team for the 2014 Glas-gow Commonwealth Games by the Australian Commonwealth Games Association at the City of Melbourne Bowls Club.

Selectors have chosen five men and five women in the open able-bodied category, while another five members have been selected to represent the para-sport team – including two vision impaired bowlers, accompanied by their directors, and three bowlers with a disability – four of whom are debuting at the Games and will compete for the first time for

medals contributing to the over-all medal tally.

Announcing the appointment of the 17 bowlers and five team officials to the 2014 Australian Commonwealth Games Team, ACGA CEO Perry Crosswhite said, “We are pleased with the very high standard of the bowlers selected – with 10 medals avail-able to be won we have every expectation that our bowlers will make a strong contribution to the overall Team success.”

The able-bodied team includes five members of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games line-up, two representatives who are back in the fold after competing at Melbourne in 2006 and three

who are making their Common-wealth Games debuts.

In the women’s team, Queens-land’s Lynsey Clarke has been selected to compete at her third consecutive Commonwealth Games, where she will endeav-our to emulate her gold medal success of 2006, and is joined by Delhi Commonwealth Games singles bronze medallist Kelsey Cottrell (NSW) and Natasha Scott (NSW), who in 2010 became the youngest bowler to represent Australia at a Commonwealth Games.

Current triple world cham-pion Karen Murphy (NSW), who clinched a gold medal in the pairs in 2006 in addition to silver

medals in 1998 in the fours and 2002 in the singles, has been se-lected for her fourth Games ap-pearance alongside 23-year-old Victorian debutante Carla Odgers.

In the men’s, Aron Sherriff (NSW) has secured a coveted place in the team for his second selection at the sport’s premier competition, as has former world number two Brett Wilkie (Qld), who skipped the triples to silver at Delhi in 2010.

Queensland’s Nathan Rice, who won Commonwealth Games bronze in the pairs in 2006, con-tinues his spectacular return from an international hiatus after miss-ing selection from the sport’s two premier competitions in recent years, the 2010 Commonwealth Games and 2012 World Champi-onships.

Joining Sherriff, Wilkie and Rice in the men’s contingent are two Games debutants entrusted with the nation’s hopes of suc-cess, including 35 year old Mat-thew Flapper, who also hails from Victoria, and 37 year old South Australian world cham-pion Wayne Ruediger.

Testament to the generational change of bowls over recent years, the average age of the women’s side is just 27, while the men’s side averages 34 years of age.

In the para-sport team, two vi-sion impaired bowlers, and their directors, and three bowlers with a disability have been selected to compete for two gold medals at the Games.

2013 International Blind Bowls Association Championships B3 singles gold medallist Tony Scott and director Peter Scott from Vic-toria, and Joy Forster, dual IBBA B2 women’s singles gold winner, in 2009 and 2012, and her director

Bruce Jones, from Queensland, have secured the vision impaired mixed pairs positions for their first Commonwealth Games.

Bowlers with a disability select-ed to compete for the other para-sport gold medal include 2002 Commonwealth Games Elite Athletes with a Disability bronze medallist James Reynolds from NSW, 2013 Lawn Bowls Multi-Disability National Champion-ships singles gold medallist Tony Bonnell from Queensland, and National Bowlers with a Physi-cal Disability silver medallist Tim Slater from Victoria.

Head Coach Steve Glasson said the bowlers would look to build on the nation’s performance in Delhi and aimed to replicate the success of their 2012 World Championships campaign, where it won five gold and two

silver medals out of a possible eight – the nation’s greatest ever performance.

“Australia have had a successful 18 months or so in international competition but we are under no illusion that the Games competi-tion will be intense and we need to be as prepared as we can,” Glas-son said.

“The team is unchanged from the one that defeated New Zea-land at the recent Trans-Tasman

Test which is testament to the way the team performed at that event recently.

“It has been a lengthy process to get to this stage through the trials and training camps and everyone should be commended on how they have prepared themselves to this point but the hard work continues now as the Games ap-proach in just a matter of months.”

Bowls is a core sport of the Games, having been included in the program since the inaugural Games in 1930, with the excep-tion of 1966 in Kingston, Jamaica. Australia’s lawn bowlers have won nine gold, 18 silver and seven bronze medals since 1930, with women not playing until 1982.

The 2014 Glasgow Common-wealth Games bowls event will be held over nine of the eleven days of competition.

It has been said that sport makes great character, but I believe that sport reveals character. Leadership in sport is a perfect example of that. Good leadership is

about finding the right balance. Saying enough without talking too much, leading by example but not to the exclusion of the other mem-bers of the team, doing what is pop-ular and doing what is right.

Leading is easy if all you have to do is what is popular, but inevitably there comes a time when a leader is required to do what is right or what is needed for the good of the club or the team knowing full well it will not be popular. Weak lead-ers shy away from these decisions, putting them off until the last min-ute, some even avoid them com-pletely. Good leaders try to find the balance and try to make the right decisions for the right reasons.

Sometimes getting it right is easi-er said than done, as advisors get in the way and interrupt efficient in-

formation flow, colouring the view or delivering only one part of the story. Good leaders understand that this is almost inevitable and seek to broaden their vision by ex-panding their pool of information. If a leader surrounds themselves with sycophants that is about as helpful as having to fight for eve-ry comma and full stop – once again getting the balance right is important.

Good leaders also cultivate those around them, usually with a little of what they want and a little of what they need also. Providing op-portunities for team members to grow and mature can only benefit the team if it is done well.

Leadership is easy when eve-rything is going well. It is when the group is under the pump that leaders of great character are re-quired. Our sport, and indeed the industry that underpins our sport, is under the pump. We have a state government in turmoil, that even when healthy and stable showed

Sports Development: We need great leaders to take our sport forward

no signs of supporting sport as a possible solution to our health crisis. In a country that has had a rich history of sport it is a pity that we have been beaten to the punch by countries like Wales that have recently seen a boost in sport par-ticipation and an associated drop in hospital and doctor visits.

We need leaders of great char-acter at every level of our sport and we need to have some vision.

In the words of John Quincy Ad-ams, ‘If your actions inspire oth-ers to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.’

And we need to support those leaders, not follow the well worn path of the ‘tall poppy syndrome’.

Questioning is an important part of the governance equation but criticising for the sake of being heard has little merit.

Sport at large, and bowls because it is our chosen sport, is at a cross-roads in this country and we need great leaders.

The East West Challenge between the NSW Keno Blues and Western Australia was played at Taren Point Bowling Club on 25 and 26 March, in the lead up to the Alley Shield campaign.

The series saw two players reach milestones, with Terry Antram bringing up 100 tests for NSW and Ben Twist 50.

Weather was the winner in the First Test, after rain forced play to be abandoned with only a handful of ends completed.

The story of both Tests played was similar, with the NSW Keno Blues establishing an early lead and resisting all fightbacks from WA to maintain and build the lead.

The Blues took both Tests with decisive margins to take the series 2-0 and retain the East West Chal-lenge Trophy.First Test 25 March 4pmWashed OutSecond Test 26 March, 10amKeno NSW Blues 87 def Western Australia 66M Baus, T Antram, W Turley & A Sherriff 29 def S Bainbridge, D Patterson, J Goddard, G Caffell 17R Pearse, M Pietersen, M Berghofer & S Garvey 29 def M Simpson, D Rankin, T Mitchell, J Slavich 15C Healey, J Green, B Twist & D Ferguson 29 def C Adams, M Ayres, K McIlroy, M Ellul 24Third Test 26 March 2pmKeno NSW Blues 70 def Western Australia 47A Sherriff 21 def J Slavich 12S Garvey 29 def M Ellul 17D Ferguson 20 def J Goddard, G Caffell 18

Perennial powerhouse Queensland has sewn up its sixth Alley Shield in nine years after at-

taining an unassailable lead at the Australian Sides Champion-ships in Tasmania.

At the national state-versus-state competition in Burnie, the Maroons established an im-pregnable position after extend-ing their unbeaten streak to six, scraping across the line with a single shot victory against a de-fiant NSW contingent in round

five, and the exact same scenario played out against Western Aus-tralia in their sixth encounter.Despite only capturing eight out of a possible 18 rinks over three days, the Maroons consistently recorded one substantial rink margin to outgun their opposi-tion on the overall scoreboard and obtain their 13th Alley Shield in the event’s 55-year history.

“It’s been very pleasing the way the guys have performed, we haven’t had the rink wins, but we’ve grinded out some tough wins and stuck together to get across the line,” Queensland Coach Bill Cornehls said.

“I’m stoked they have come to-gether as such a unit; all the guys are growing little goatees just as a bit of team bonding, which has really brought them closer to-gether and paid dividends.

“It’s something special, playing against all the other states, es-pecially coming to surfaces that we’re not familiar with up north. I just couldn’t be any prouder.

“The next goal is the Overall State Champions Trophy – if both the men and the women go out and play well against South Australia tomorrow, we should be right up there for a chance to claim that too.”

After 126 matches played, 12 Test matches completed by 74 competitors over three action-packed days, Australia have once again dominated the an-nual Trans-Tasman test series against arch-rival New Zea-land that concluded recently at the Traralgon Bowls Club in Victoria.

New Zealand arrived in Aus-tralia hoping to wipe the bit-ter memories of the one-sided encounter they had to endure twelve months ago on their home deck in Auckland but now leave Australia on this occasion with similar memories after a superb

dominant performance by the Australians.

The Trans-Tasman event, staged in the largest city in the Gippsland region, showcased the best lawn bowls has to offer with both countries fielding 37 elite players each in open, develop-ment, under-18 and para-sport teams and despite displaying great touch and precision at vari-ous times throughout the week and winning individual matches, New Zealand continually battled to finish off the Aussies collec-tively on so many occasions un-able to secure more overall Test results.

Just like it did at the Howick Bowling Club in Auckland last year, Australia collected all but one of the ten single discipline and overall trophies on offer which includes an additional one with the introduction of the para-sport category for the first-time.

The para-sport category is a new addition to the Trans-Tas-man landscape in preparation for the Commonwealth Games where the para-sport, consisting of a Vision Impaired Mixed Pairs and Bowlers with a Disability tri-ple, will compete for medals on the overall medal tally for the first time.

With 12 tests completed over the three-days, Australia won nine Tests with New Zealand’s three test successes coming cour-tesy of the development team on day one, and the para-sport and open team on the final day.

Australia and New Zealand, led by national coaches Steve Glas-son and Dave Edwards, used the Trans-Tasman series as an im-portant preparation for the up-coming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow commencing 23 July.

“I’m a very proud coach today with such strong performances

in all teams across all disciplines,” Glasson said.

“All of our dedicated coaches oversee a committed bunch of quality young bowlers who per-form with great passion and en-thusiasm when the green and gold is worn and that makes our job very enjoyable.

“Both countries are great com-batants on the green which al-ways augurs well for entertaining bowls and hopefully we provided that this week to a great crowd at Traralgon.

“Congratulations to Dave Ed-wards and the New Zealand team on their performances through-out the series and we look for-ward to resuming the rivalry in Glasgow at the Games,” Glasson said.

The Traralgon Bowls Club welcomed over 1200 patrons throughout the week to witness the international bowls series.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BANGALOW BOWLING CLUB on the opening of their newly renovated green on 15 March 2014. Special guests, T.B.D.B.A. President Jim Clark and Treasurer Ron McCauley, were welcomed by Club President Tony Hart and joined invited members from other clubs within the District together

with Bangalow bowlers for a wonderful afternoon of social bowls.

Three months of true Aus-sie grit, determination and a fantastic group of volunteers, under the leadership of Greens Director Gerry Swain certainly has paid dividends. The green is a little slow at present, only just coming in, but is run-

ning true. Come early May the T.B.D.B.A. Reserve Singles Championships are scheduled to be conducted at Bangalow, by which time the green will be up to pace.

Bangalow Bowling Club, the oldest Club in the Tweed Byron District, first opened its doors on 28 February 1910. Although membership has

decreased over the years, there definitely has not been any decline, whatsoever, in the pride, loyalty and enthusiastic drive of all members, men and women alike.

Again, Bangalow Bowling Club, congratulations on your brilliant achievement, May your Club go from strength to strength.

SENIORS WEEK, THIS YEAR, WAS OBSERVED MID MARCH; so what better timing for the T.B.D.B.A. to conduct their Veterans Day on 19 March. Special guests, Zone 1 President Kevin Soward and Secretary/State Councillor Ron Wood-ward, joined with members to celebrate their special day.

38 Veterans and Super Vet-erans from within the District gathered at Brunswick Heads BC to engage in this event.

Thankfully, threatening storms held off allowing the men to en-joy a friendly morning of bowls.

Following lunch, the Badge Pinning ceremony, under the baton of MC District Secretary

Tony Hart, was a grand affair with our special Zone 1 guests performing the honours of badge presentations.

District President Jim Clark would like to thank our host, Brunswick Heads BC for assist-ing in making the day a wonder-ful success. Everyone left with a smile on their face!

AROUND THE ZONES

IN AN OUTSTANDING GAME OF BOWLS the Charlestown quartet of Dennis Fan, Ian Barrett, Damian Robb & Jay Walls have won the Club’s first Zone 2 Fours Championship since 1992. They defeated the Mayfield West combination of Tony Atcheson, David Evans, Jason Banks & Trevor Aitchison 21–20 in a thrilling Final, with the lead changing hands on 7 occasions.

Aitchison’s team appeared set for victory when they scored 3 shots on the 16th end to lead 18–12. Walls’ team then rallied scoring two 2s and a 4 to hit the front 20–18 with 2 ends to play.

Aitchison scored 2 shots on the penultimate end to draw level 20-all.

Walls’ winning bowl was an on shot, which the Mayfield West team failed to remove. It was Walls’ third District Fours title previously enjoying suc-cess in 2008 at Lambton and 2012 at Soldiers Point.

The semi-finals were con-trasting affairs, with Walls scoring 1 shot on the last end to edge out Tim Twining, Anthony Ellercamp, Haydn Bo-jkowski & Michael Abel (Ray-mond Terrace) 20–19. Aitch-ison comfortably accounted for Wayne Smith, Chris Evans, David Horne & Andrew Smith (Lambton) 23–15.

DEFENDING NO.1 GRADE Mid-Week Pennant champions Raymond Terrace will play Sol-diers Point in this year’s Final. Raymond Terrace comfortably defeated Kurri Kurri 62–49 in its semi-final winning on 2 of the 3 rinks. Lennon Scott downed Brendon Baker 24–16 and Jason Stokes beat Andrew Rees 20–12. Australian repre-sentative Matthew Baus lost 21–18 to Nathan Dawson.

The second semi-final was a thriller with Soldiers Point

edging out Maitland City 65–64. Neville Downes & Lee Such being the successful Point skippers. Downes beat Brad Threadgate 29–13 and Such overcame David Dillworth 22–20, while Rod Redding kept Maitland City in the match defeating Terry Antram 31–14. Redding narrowly missing scoring 4 shots on the last end, which would have sent the match into overtime. A report on the Final in the next edition of Bowls NSW.

A NUMBER OF THE ZONE’S most promising young bowlers have contested the 18–25 Years Pairs & Singles Champion-ships. Riley Wells (Beresfield) and Daniel Hill (Soldiers Point) claimed the 18–25 Years Pairs with an exciting 24–22 vic-tory over Brent Christiansen (Beresfield) and Joel Roche (Belmont).

The semi–finals were contrasting affairs with Wells & Hill convincingly defeat-ing Brandon Stacey & Jack Ryan (Belmont) 24–12, whilst Christiansen & Roche edged out Matthew Riding & Michael Staples (Lambton) 17–13.

The 18–25 Years Singles has advanced to the semi-final stage with Adrian Solomons (Raymond Terrace) opposed to Joel Roche and Haydn Bojkowski (Raymond Terrace) plays Brendon Stacey.

COREY REID (Swansea Work-ers) made it back to back Zone 2 Junior Singles titles when he comfortably defeated Molly Wilton (Raymond Terrace) 31–20 in the Final. He is the first junior bowler to achieve this feat since Matthew Baus in 2005 & 2006. Reid also combined with Maddison Fennell (Warners Bay) to convincingly down Brendan Stokes (Raymond Terrace) & Jayden Newman (Redhead) 30–8 in the Junior Pairs Final.

Ten-year-old Brendan Stokes (Raymond Terrace) became the youngest bowler to win a

Zone 2 Championship when he combined with Kate Matthews (Redhead), Molly Wilton (Ray-mond Terrace) & Jack McKew (Redhead) to win the Zone 2 Junior Fours Championship. They defeated Lachlan Freeman, Jamie Dow, Corey Reid & Maddison Fennell.

Eight rounds of the Zone 2 Saturday No.1 Grade Pennant competition have been com-pleted. Defending champions Valentine are in grave danger of missing the play-offs. They are currently in third place in Section 2 on 24.5 points, behind Soldiers Point (36.5) and Beresfield (32.5) noting that the top two sides in each Section qualify for the quarter-finals.

Alder Park (42) and Nelson Bay (34) appear certain qualifiers from Section 1. Raymond Terrace No.1 (43) and Mayfield West (35.5) are the Section 3 quali-fiers. Section 4 is wide open with Kahibah (30.5), Edgeworth (27.5), Kotara (27), Toronto Workers (22) and Raymond Terrace No.2 (21.5) all still in contention. VETERANS DAY, a Seniors Week event, was played at West Tamworth on Thursday, 20th March. This event was sponsored by the NSW State Government, the Central Northern District and West Tamworth Sports and Bowling club. Forty-eight players attended and enjoyed a sumptuous meal before taking to the greens for their games. Winners for the day were R. Walters and D. Page (+22), and runners-up were M. Rose, M. Mor-ris and Keith Moore (+20). Super Veterans badges were presented by CNDBA president Rob Key to Jim McCluand, L. Wilson, Max Inman, Ross McKinnon, Wim Kraan, D. Campbell and Rob Key. Seven Vet-erans badges were also presented to D. James, R. Walters, M. Morris, P. Holloway, Robert Cummings, D. Page and D. Campbell, concluding a most enjoyable day.

MOST OF THE BOWLING ACTIVITY in the past few weeks has been centred on pennant playoffs. A number of matches saw the completion of Zone titles on last weekend, 3rd and 4th of May, in conditions at most clubs which could only be described as shocking, with cold winds, drizzling rain and snow in some cases. Nevertheless, all games were completed satisfactorily, which shows the fortitude of all concerned. This was a complete contrast to the conditions two weeks before, when ideal bowl-ing conditions were experienced.

Results were: The No 1 Zone 3 pennant went

to Lightning Ridge, but the scores have not yet reached the officials, No 2 Pennant went to Armidale City, with 34 points from five games, followed by Kootingal, with 18 points. These games were played at Uralla (3 rounds) and Glen Innes (2 rounds). The sixth game was abandoned because of the weather conditions, and the Armidale City side were in an unbeatable position. A feature of the match was the performance of two juniors in the Armidale side, Jack Whitton and Thomas Inman, who bowled extremely well throughout the rounds. Both Lightning Ridge and Armidale City are now in the State finals.

No’s 3, 4 and 5 Pennants were played in two sections, as there were eight nominations in each grade. In the No 3 first section, the winners were West Tamworth, with 26.5 points, with runners-up being South Tamworth with 21 points.

West Tamworth will now play Narrabri from Section 2, who had 30 points, from an unlucky Armidale Ex-Services side who finished with 29 points, and who lost to Narrabri in the last game with two of their teams going down by one shot each.

In the No 4 Pennant the first section winners were Goodooga with 28.5 points, following their elevation after winning the No 5 State flag last year. Runners-up were Moree Services, with 22 points. The second section was won by Manilla with 31.5 points, followed by Uralla with 22 points.

No 5 pennants’ first section was won by Glen Innes, who put on a strong performance to finish with 28 points, with their only loss being to Walcha, who finished with 23 points. The sec-ond section was won by South Tamworth with 31.5 points, from Kootingal with 19 points.

The No 6 pennant saw only three entries from sides outside Central Northern District and Gwydir District and resulted in a win for Narrabri on a countback from Lightning Ridge, with both teams finishing on 18 points. Armidale City was the only other entrant. The other districts are still completing their games.

The No 7 pennant was played at District level and in New England District the winners were Armidale Ex-Services, with Guyra finishing second and Uralla being the only other en-trant. The other districts are still completing their rounds, and the Zone playoffs will be at Quirindi on 14th & 15th June.

THE CENTRAL NORTHERN DISTRICT State Senior pairs between Dennis Silcock and John Coulton (West Tamworth ) and Kim Greentree and Graeme Harri-ott (Kootingal) was played at West Tamworth on 15th March. After Silcock and Coulton led for most of the first sixteen ends, Greentree and Harriott piked up 11 shots on the last five ends to run out winners 33–22. The winners will now go on to the Zone playoffs at Armidale City on 26–27th July.

The final of the CNDBA State

Singles was held at Kootingal between Nathan Wise and Nick Golledge (both South Tamworth) with Nathan being the winner, 31–25, following a game of excel-lent draw bowls and accurate drives which resulted in many dead ends. The senior singles was held at the same time and resulted in a win for Ian Bannister (Tamworth City), who defeated John Coulton (West Tamworth), 31–20. Ian will now go on to the Zone Senior playoffs at Quirindi on 19th and 20th July.

Well done to Nepean!! Con-gratulations to all the players. I know Longy would have been as proud as punch watching his event being played by some of our past and still present best bowlers and many of

Western Districts could finish either First or last

HAVING BEEN ZONE 9’S INTERZONE COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVE since 2005 Carl Perry is well known through-out the other fifteen Zones. He recently retired from this role and as Zone 9 Senior VP (2012–14), Selectors Chair (2005–14), Match Committee (2006–14). He is still a member of State Match Com-mittee. An outstanding record and much appreciated contribu-tion to Zone 9 and to our sport.

BOWLS NSW BOARD OF DIRECTORS accepted an invitation to visit Zone 9 on 19 March 2014 at Harbord Bowling Club.

The Board met first with the Zone Executive over lunch and then with the Club Presidents, Delegates and Zone Committee members for more than hour with over 50 in attendance. It provided an ideal way for all to discuss matters of interest.

ZONE 9 RECENTLY CREATED a Public Relations and Promo-tions Committee with objective of promoting bowls through liaison with committees, website, clubs, making use of photography, press, internet & social media. It is accountable to the Zone President.

THIS IS ABOUT THE EXTRAOR-DINARY ACCOMPLISHMENT of an 80-year-old North Shore resident, Barney Flanagan, who has been playing the game of Lawn Bowls for 52 years as well as representing a number of clubs in Pennant Teams for 50 years. His first game was on 4th March 1962 and first Pennant match in the 1964 season.

Barney Flanagan is currently a member of The Chatswood Bowling Club having joined in 2005 and also holds the position in that club of President.

He was till recently a member of the Zone 9 Match committee and has been a player in Zone Representative Teams.

His successes in the game have included a number of majors in

Zone 9 State Championships as well as having won every Club Championship with some on several occasions.

THE ZONE HELD ITS ANNUAL LAWN BOWLS DAY for Veteran and Super Veteran bowlers on Monday 14th April at Harbord Bowling Club. The Event was attended by One Hundred and Fourteen players from the 36 As-sociated Clubs in the Zone 9 area. The organisers of the Event are two great stalwarts of the game and Zone, Fred Leane and Bill Burridge.

The Harbord Bowling Club who hosted the day went to much

trouble to ensure the “Over 75’s, Combatants of The Green” had an enjoyable day.

The event which has been held in the Zone for the past 35 years is a day when senior players are combined into teams from all clubs and get to know each in a friendly yet competitive atmos-phere. The oldest playing member on the day was Tim Payne who is 97 years of age and a member of The War Veterans Bowling Club where he plays regularly.

ZONE 9 IS PLANNING to put a concerted effort into recruitment with a Zone wide recruitment drive in 2014/15. The Zone will be providing its 36 clubs with financial assistance towards this objective which will of course largely occur at club level.

ONE OF OUR MEMBERS, Neil Donaldson of Dee Why BC, was in the petrol tanker traffic accident and explosion at Mona Vale last year. A long, arduous recovery that is still ongoing. We wish Neil and wife Jen all the best for the future.

AROUND THE ZONES

THE FRIDAY NIGHT MIXED TRIPLES at Ingleburn proved an enjoyable time again this year with the final played on 23rd March.

Both teams had taken some big scalps to reach the final with very close results in both semi–finals.

A perfect green saw young gun Chris Fitton and his more senior members Marie & Ces Wright winning 5 of the first eight ends to lead 8–5 in the eighth. A 3 in the ninth by Lea McKenna with Ann & John

Roach brought them to 8-all in the ninth but this was immedi-ately countered by a 3 from the Fitton crew.

Many great bowls saw the Roach team pick up 14 shots in the next four ends to lead 22–11 at end fourteen. Persistence had the Fitton crew win five of the last seven ends by only 1 shot each time.

The final result was A. Roach, L. McKenna & J. Roach 25 to C. Wright, M. Wright & C. Fitton 16.

Congratulations to all on a great game.

THE INGLEBURN MEN’S MAJOR PAIRS again proved to be a stellar event this year. Many great rounds with some close results had kept all bowlers on their toes. The semi-finals showed a total of 24 ends with a single shot result and both finalists winning by a 2-shot margin. One semi had a 16-all tie on end 18 and the other a 16-all draw on the 20th end. Left us looking forward to a great final. The final had Warren McInnes & Chris Epple pitted against Dave King & Col Kembrey. Many brilliant bowls sent the King/Kembrey pair of to a flying start 12–2 in the seventh and still 14–5 in

the eleventh. The persistent McInnes/Epple pair secured a 6 in the twelfth and 3 more in the next 2 ends to be only one shot behind. A 5 in the seventeenth had the McInnes/Epple pair with a 3-shot lead and the crowd waiting for the next delivery. With only 1 shot difference in the result of the last four ends the final result was W. McInnes & C. Epple 23 to D. King & C. Kembrey 21.

A great game worthy of a final showing tremendous sports-manship with all players and spectators applauding every good bowl by both teams. A real winner for bowls. Well done to all.

THIS WAS A CLASSIC CONFRONTATION between two of our youngest and best draw bowlers in the club. Brad Mitchell our Minor Singles Champion of 2012 and Ryan Beattie our current Major Singles Champion. Both players defeated some very elite bowlers in the rounds and thor-oughly deserved to be facing each other in the final. And what a final this turned out to be.

Ryan raced out to a 10–2 lead at the 5th end only for Brad to hit back and win the next 4 ends and lead 11–10. Ryan once again took charge to lead 20–12 at the 15th end and so the game went back and forth and at the 31st end was locked 28-all and then 30-all at the 34th end. Finally the game was decided with Brad edging out Ryan 31–30 to win the Blue Ribbon event and become our new club cham-pion for 2014 in one of the best Major Singles Final ever played at our club. Congratulations to both players for a truly memorable and exciting grand-final.

THE FINAL OF THE MAJOR PAIRS was also played at Homelea Ave between the much younger Troy Russell/Frank Schocher pairing against Shane Matakaiongo(Spiff)/ Nathan Spence(Chicka). The cream rises to the top and here we have the best of the best and in contrast to the other matches the combined age of this lot was a mere 165 years. Certainly not teenagers anymore but still at the top of their game. Spiff & Chicka got away to a dream start with a 4 on the 1st end, a nice confidence booster. From there they were never headed until the 18th end when Troy and Frank fought back and went to the lead by a slim one point! 16–15.

However the young guns hit back hard and won the last 3 ends to take out the final 21–16. A really good game with little between these two pairs all the way. There’s no substitute for experience, but youth will find a way.

“I saw something very unusual”, writes Graham Gollan from CBT&BC.

CBT&BC were playing Mount-ies in the State Reserve Fours.

The match was very tight. At around the halfway mark, a strange situation evolved. CBT&BC had the first toucher (Tony Micallef).

A Mounties bowl came down slightly disturbing the original toucher and became the official toucher. The third toucher oc-curred when another Mounties bowl arrived sandwiching the jack between the other two bowls and locking it there – thus becoming the third resting toucher.

The umpire declared the end a tie and it was counted as a ‘played’ end.

I have seen two, but not three resting touchers – surely a very rare occurrence indeed.

ON SUNDAY 27TH APRIL the finals of our Major and Minor Singles were played and resulted in Rod Vial defeating Kevin Oldroyd 31–19 in the Major Singles and Barry Whitton defeating Michael Lew 31–17 in the Minor Singles. The games were played in unpleas-ant conditions, but spectators congratulated all four players on their performances.

Earlier in the year the team of Ted Price, Athol Allen, Wayne Kelleher and Rod Vial

defeated the team of Steven Way, Dennis Whittaker, Ross Dalton and Jason Stretton in the final of the Club Fours.

This was particularly memorable for Ted Price as it was his first ever Club Champion-ship, after many years of trying.

The Club is presently in a close battle in Section 1 of Grade 4 Pennants and expecta-tions are high that they can proceed to the Zone Pennant Play Offs.

FRANCIS DRAKE CLUB fours final was an exciting game with three players Bob, Mick and Laurie all striving for their first Major Club Championship in their respective teams. Dave Spowart’s team got off to a great start with Dave sitting a bowl for 5 on the first end.

Alan Lawson’s team tried hard but Bob and Mick continued to draw close bowls which enabled their team mates to capitalise and eventually the team of Bob Gouttman, Mick

Macfie, Rick Asbury and Dave Spowart win-ning 27 to 14 over Warren Surplice, L Hardy, J King and Alan Lawson. Club Major Pairs Final saw Rick Asbury combining with new mem-ber Les Warner, playing in his first final at the club, played some magic bowls to defeat John Waugh and Jack Johnson 24 to 7. The Minor Pairs Final was won by Lardy Hardy and new member Stuart Robertson who defeated Guy Savoca and Terry Healey 23 to 12.

THE TWO FINALISTS in Sutherland’s Club Singles Championship for 2014 were no strangers to playing in finals. Fred Bullock, a former multiple winner of the singles title is almost a “regular” in semi final and finals of Sutherland’s team championship, whilst his opponent, Phil Raymer, was runner-up in the Club Major Singles in 2013 and then went on to win the 2013 Minor Singles title.

With both finalists playing inspired bowls in the earlier rounds, a tight game was antici-pated. However, it was Fred Bullock who really brought his “A” game on the day to have a comfortable win 31 to 13.

RAMSGATE RSL MAJOR SINGLES was won by Rob McNab with Bruce Nottage a valiant runner-up. The Major Pairs went to James King and Rob McNab who overcame quality opposition in Tom Pearce and Graham Conen, more championships are underway.

We are pleased to report that after several years of sub-standard greens and the loss of some bowlers as a result, Ramsgate RSL now have new Championship standard greens. These came into play earlier this year and con-sequently we are now attracting new bowlers to the club. Our Grade 4 and 6 Pennant sides are in with a chance to make the play-offs, good luck guys.

MAJOR TRIPLES. Winners : Graham Magree, Garry Smith and Keith Thompsondefeated David Holmes, Reg Savelby and Keith McCallum.

MAJOR PAIRS. The Winners were George Mclearn and Bill Stephen, with Peter Bryant and Brian Quinsey Runners up.

MAJOR SINGLES. The Winner was Peter

Hvass and runner up John Roberts. At South Cronulla Bowling Club, the last

Championship Triples competition was won by Skip Graham Magree, Gary Smith and Keith Thompson. The Annual Bert Martin Ag-gregate Point Score for every game played was completed and won by Jim McKerihan. Jim joined the club only last year. Well done, Jim.

On behalf of everyone in the Zone I would like to congratulate Paul on his re-election.

SAWTELL MEN’S BOWLING CLUB ON EASTER SATURDAY 19th April, held a special game sponsored by Peter Dubois Smash Repairs for those bowler not going away for Easter weekend. Fifty-six bowlers filled the two greens avail-able for a “Pluck-a-Partner Easter 3 Bowl Pairs” tournament consisting of 2 games of 13 ends, changing skips for the second round. 20 points for a win plus 1 point for each end won. Two teams drew and with a count back, the winning team was John Mola and Norm Drysdale; second Ron Smithers and Graham Campbell with Tony Griffith and Joe Frank getting the money for third place. Sawtell Grade 4 have come in winners for the MNC Grade 4 Pennant 2014 after completing six rounds of the competition with a margin of 6 points over Bellingen who came in second. This was a short pennant season for grade 4 as there were only four clubs entered.

URUNGA BOWLS CLUB on Sunday 30 March saw an unusual contest of extremely high standard competition between two in-form father and son combinations.

Bones and Corey Wedlock against Brett and Chris McDonnell as they fought out the 2014 Urunga Major Pairs final in ideal conditions with the two sons skipping and the fathers relegated to leads.

It was the Wedlocks getting up to take the title 26 shots to 13 with Bones Wedlock having an outstanding game.

DESPITE THE COMPOSITE SIDE racing to an 11–0 lead after just 6 ends, the less experienced Kemp-sey Heights four fought back to a respectable scoreline of 20–12 after 17 ends. However the experience gained in senior pennant ranks shone through for the composite side and they were able to close out the final with a healthy 25–14 final score.

Zone 14 President (Neale Craig) paid tribute to the manner in which the match was played and encour-aged the Kempsey Heights boys (most of whom have been playing for less than 12 months) to “stick with it”. Their names are sure to feature in Junior ranks over the next few years.

The Champions can now look forward to the NSW Junior Cham-pionships to be held at Warilla in July during the School Winter Holidays.

Zone 14 Junior ChampionshipsThe Mid North Coast pair got

off to a flying start, conceding only 1 shot in the first 10 ends to take a commanding 17–1 lead. The Kempsey Heights brothers could easily have given up, but they resolutely kept on trying against their more experienced opponents. The final score line of 34–8 did not reflect the amount of effort both sides put into the match.

Ben Wynter earned the unofficial title of the “comeback King” when he and playing partner, cousin Cody Griffin, turned a 5–10 deficit into a seemingly comfortable 23–11 victory. This must have seemed like déjà vu for young Alex Pyke who had suffered a similar fate in the singles semi–final against Ben.

As had been the case in the Singles final, blustery wind condi-tions had a significant influence on the performance of all players. Josh and Sam adapted much faster, and despite dropping 7 shots in just two ends, managed to edge ahead 12–10 after 9 ends.

IN ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS ever seen at West Coffs, eight of the best bowlers in the club contested the Major Fours Final on Saturday afternoon February 15 in front of a big crowd of keen and appreciative supporters.

The Kent Price quartet looked to have the game sewn up mid way through the contest when they led 19 shots to just 6 but somebody forgot to tell the

opposing skip Rob Wardrup and his three team members as they dug deep to fight their way back into championship contention.

With the scores locked at 21 shots each after the regulation 21 ends, the game went into a sudden death extra end which the Price team managed to win by two shots to the well deserved acclamation of the almost 100 spectators.

AROUND THE ZONES

SUNDAY 4TH MAY was a bitterly cold and windy day at Kahibah for the annual representative games against Zone 2 (Newcastle) and Zone 6 (Hunter/Manning). The format requires the host team to field two sides of four rinks and two rinks of U18’s.

The Zone 15 Reserve side included several players repre-senting for the first time and the attitude and performance of the players was commendable. Zone 15 won the morning game against Newcastle’s B Side by five shots on the master scoreboard with rink wins by Shaun Ireland and Darren Vetter. The U18’s also won with rink wins by Mitchell McDonnell and Jayden Moody’s teams.

The afternoon game was against the well performed Newcastle A side which included Lee Such, a highly skilled ex Premier League and State player. It was a close tussle for the best part of the game but Newcastle gained the upper hand in the latter half to win by 20 shots. Dick Nowland’s team of David Weige, Steve Guilmartin and John Hannan recorded a solid 19–14 win. Special mention to Wayne Hensley’s rink of Adam Davidson, Luke Rash and Adam Pinkerton who played particularly well to go down in both games by just one shot. The U18’s lost their afternoon game by 12 shots with Mitchell McDonnell’s team of Bai-ley Meti, Michael Bressington and Jacob Casswell putting in a strong performance for a 16–12 win.

Overall the Reserve side recorded a win and a loss on the day with the Newcastle B side recording the best overall margin. The chairman of Selectors Dick Love was encouraged by the players’ performance in difficult conditions and commented “the Zone’s future looks assured”.

BOWLS CENTRAL COAST hosted Volunteers Day at The Entrance on Tuesday 13th May in recognition of those volun-teer workers who contribute to the running of their clubs in a variety of different ways. Over 80 volunteers from 21 clubs took to the greens at The Entrance in a friendly morning game of bowls followed by a luncheon in the Fu-sion Family Feast Restaurant.

Bob Moran, a Director of Bowls NSW, was in attendance as a spe-cial guest and he addressed the gathering before being invited to present a Bowls NSW Volunteer Certificate to a nominated person from each club in attendance. He acknowledged the importance of volunteers within our culture

and our sport and without them we would be a very different and much poorer society. Bob personally congratulated each recipient for their outstanding contribution to their respective club and handed them a framed certificate.

A great day was had by all those in attendance and it reflected the friendship and camaraderie that the sport of lawn bowls gener-ates within the community. The recipients of certificates were: Ray Delaney – Avoca Beach BC, Paul Hannagan – Bateau Bay BC, Bill Rempel – Breakers BC Wam-beral, Les Patience – Davistown RSL BC, Ray Toomey – diggers@ theentrance BC, Steve Thornhill – Ettalong Memorial BC, Howard

Frankland – Everglades Country Club, Graham Norris – Gosford City BC, David Noble –Haleku-lani BC, Ronald Burgess – Moris-set BC, Alf Davis – Munmorah United BC, Col Paulson – Norah Head BC, Bill Davison – Our-imbah/Lisarow RSL BC, Brian Williams – Terrigal BC, Keith Shanahan – The Entrance BC, Ian Hume – Toukley District BC, Peter Grogan – Toukley RSL BC, Mark Speerin –Umina Beach BC, Bob Knight – Woy Woy BC, Alan Morris – Wyong Men’s BC, Max Jones – Wyong RSL BC, Peter Taylor – Bowls Central Coast Selectors, Wendy Heath – Bowls Central Coast Recorder, Colin Bray and Doug Rose – Bowls Central Coast Executive.

FORMER AUSTRALIAN PLAYER AND THE CURRENT COACH of the Australian team, Steve Glas-son, was invited by the Zone 15 Chairman of Selectors Dick Love to address a gathering of Zone 15 rep-resentative, emerging and Under 18 players at Terrigal Bowling Club.

Steve gave a brief outline of how he came to take up bowls through his father who was a Qld representative player and how he came to play against Kelvin Kerkow as a junior which turned into a lifelong friendship on and off the green. He then walked the players through a presentation on how to build a successful team emphasising commitment to the game, realising personal goals, building team spirit and respect for the opposition, team mates

and the uniform you are wearing. Regardless of whether you are representing Australia, your State, Zone or Club, Steve stressed there is no place for individual egos and they are not to be tolerated at any level of our sport.

It was an interesting and entertaining talk presented in a

friendly down-to-earth manner and thoroughly enjoyed by an appreciative audience. Dick Love thanked Steve for the giving of his time and reiterated that his talk highlighted many key points that are worth pondering upon if we are going to develop as individuals and team players.

THE ANNUAL PHIL BUSHBY CHALLENGE was held during March at Albion Park Bowling Club. A new format was tried this year to keep this event going. Instead of the North vs South format, the Zone Selectors had the zone Open Team playing the Zone Senior Team over 4 rinks.

This will be used as a selection trial for both sides for both the State Interzone Championships. The game was of a very high standard and close right up to the last end. The Open Team ran out close winners 82 to 77 with 2 rinks each.

The selectors picked a very strong Senior Side of 16 players which will be cut back to 13 play-ers after another trial on Sunday 13th of April at Engadine Bowling Club.

These 13 players will contest the State Senior Interzone Champi-onships.

WHAT A FINAL the large crowd were treated to on Friday afternoon 21st March 2014.

Peter Kendall & Brian Suckley squared off against Brian Fox & Tom Gillespie on the number one green in front of the club house packed with spectators and supporters. The match up always promised to be a close one and so it turned out to be, with the fifteenth end proving to be the championship decider.

In a game of some high quality bowls the lead altered 10 times and after 14 ends the scores were tied at 15-all. It was on the 15th end where Peter and Brian scored a 5 where the game was decided for, try as they may, Brian & Tom could not peg back the margin finally going down by 6 shots 25–19.

Congratulations to Peter & Brian on becoming this year’s

Major Pairs Champions also to Brian & Tom on an excellent effort and a great game.

Peter and Brian will go on to represent the club later this year in the zone events.

BELLAMBI BOWLING CLUB is the surprise packet of this year’s pennant season with all 3 teams leading their sections after Round 8 and appears certain to be playing some games during the pennant playoffs. This is the first time for many years that the club has fielded 3 pennant teams.

After a few years of the main club struggling to keep financial, things are starting to turn around and with the addition of a few new players the club is enjoying a very good pennant season.

Also another of the smaller clubs who have been struggling, Kembla Heights has qualified for the Grade no5 playoffs. The last pennant they won was back in 1961 and this is the first time since they have made the playoffs.

WOONONAThe Major Singles final between

Anthony O’Neill and Steve Anger was played on Sunday 4th May in very blustery windy condi-tions. The game was a close affair for most of the game with Steve finally getting on top and win-ning 31–27.

DAPTOThe Major Singles final was won

by Brian Suckley who defeated Alan Stonham 31–15. The Minor Singles final was won by Brad Whitford who defeated Ricky Mc-Clelland 31–12.

DAPTO CITIZENSFours Winners were Chris Green,

THIRROULThirroul Bowling Club has com-

pleted both Fours and Major Pairs Championships for the year 2014.

The Fours Champions for 2014 are Carl Morgan, Paul Jones, James Jones and Anthony Jones with run-ners up Greg Watters, Rolf Dern, Dave Walters and Bob Johnson. The three Jones’s in the winning side consist of brothers, James and Anthony and father Paul.

The Major pairs was decided on Sunday 4th May with Mick Eng-lish and Mick Cooper prevailing to be 2014 Champions and brothers James and Anthony Jones again being in the final, filling the run-ner up position.

ALBION PARKOn Monday 7th April the 14th

Annual Jerry Remfry Fours Tour-nament was held.

A strong field contested the event with the winners being a team from St John’s Park skipped by State player Ben Twist.

Some strong teams were skipped between Shane Garvey, Paul Robertson, Eric Johannes, Scott Bateup, John Ferguson, Ray Parkes and Brett Pieper.

All teams played 3 games over 12 ends.

Unfortunately because of a computer failure, some results were lost.

However, the winners with 3 wins plus 53 were George Hum-phries, Barry Lancaster, Josh Berry and Ben Twist from St John’s Park. Runners up with 3 wins plus 29 were Warren Kelly, Roger Kelly, Mark Walton and Mick Duprez from Albion Park.

CLUB NEWS

“F rom humble beginnings” states the history page

of the Warilla Bowls and Recrea-tion Club’s website, and indeed they were. Foundation President George Williams, now a spritely 93-years-old, remembers those times like yesterday. What started out with a meeting of 28 men with an interest in lawn bowls has now grown to a modern, sprawling fa-cility, complete with a full indoor green, 4 outdoor greens (3 grass and one synthetic), a new 240-seat ‘bar and grill’, outdoor children’s area, 3 function rooms which can cater for up to 250 guests, Cow-ries café, 20 on-site cabins, 20,000 members and is heralded as one of the country’s premier Bowling Clubs. World Bowls CEO Gary Smith calls the Club “the best bowling club in the world”. He should know – having been all around the world he looks forward to the World Cup at Warilla every April which has been held at the Club for the past nine years.

The Club underwent exten-sive renovations in the latter half of 2013, including replacement and upgrade of the Club’s air conditioning system, a brand new restaurant – the Red Sands Bar & Grill, the all new Cowries café which replaced the old cof-fee shop, a new sports lounge which replaced the old TAB and completely new main bar and toilets. The Club foyer and gam-ing lounge were also extensively renovated. Whilst the renova-tions caused a major disruption to trading, Club Chairman Steve Feeney said: “We knew that the financial year during the renova-tions would be a challenging one with the place ripped apart for 8 months, but we have a progres-sive Board that understand the need to modernise to maintain relevance in the marketplace and the renovations should set us up for the next 50 years.”

Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club celebrated 50 years this

March in true Warilla style with 250 guests, including five surviv-ing foundation members and the Club’s longest serving General Manager (now retired and a state bowls selector) Neil Bayo as spe-cial guests.

One foundation member who I had a long chat to during the evening, a down to earth straight shooter (which he said always got him into trouble with the Com-mittee during his playing days) made the point that whilst the Club may have changed over the past 50 years, bowlers haven’t. In his words: “The joint is a bit bigger but bowlers are still only getting beaten by the greens, the weather, bad luck and anything else but their own ability.”

When further asked if this meant he thought maybe that bowlers overestimated their abil-ity on the green he replied: “They have been forever! During pen-nants season, if you could buy a bowler for what they’re really

worth and sell “em for what they think they’re worth we could’ve built another harbour bridge.” Even in 50 years of lawn bowls some things don’t change.

The Club, during those 50 years, has enjoyed much success on the greens, the highlight being the State no. 1 pennant in 2004. The Club’s junior bowls academy now headed up by coach Leif Selby is the envy of Clubs around the state, whilst over the years Inter-national, Australian and State players such as Terry Baldwin, Tom Ellem, Eric Johannes, Rob Parella, Troy Sommerville, Kevin Walsh, Willy Wood, Rocky Stone, Geoff McGillivray, Karen Murphy, Jeremy Henry, Ian Taylor and Alex Marshall have all been proud to be part of the Club’s success. Not to forget the new breed – watch out for Aaron Teys, Jesse Noronha and his cousins Samantha and Natalie. These kids are the stars of the future. Here’s to another 50 years as good as the last 50.

BOWLS NSW • MAY-JUN 201434

As we are into the quieter time of the year on the greens, the NSW Bowling

Greenkeepers Association run their many events. In May, Fed-eration Week was held in the ACT. This is a chance for all the Greenkeeping states to get to-gether. It occurs every 3 years in a different state and in a different part of each state. We play a se-ries of test matches between the states and also hold our national championships.

The week is not just about bowls with several talks from sponsors throughout the week-long event. It is a great opportunity to con-nect with the new and innova-tive products that come on to our market, as well as refreshing the knowledge and use of some ex-isting products and machinery. This was well supported by Turf Industry suppliers and manu-facturers. This year’s highlight was a comprehensive tour of the Parliament House and grounds. The guided tours went through all the restricted-to-public areas and gardens that most of us reg-ular taxpayers never get to see.

The week begins with a dinner and catching up with old mates and of course making some new ones. It’s all friendly food and a few drinks until we hit the green the next day.

The test series is a round robin; with the first day’s play at Quean-beyan RSL club, with NSW beat-ing Queensland and South Aus-tralia defeating Victoria. 2nd test moved to Tuggeranong BC and saw South Australia def Qld and NSW over Victoria. The next day saw two games played at Wes-ton Creek with the second game played under lights. With SA getting over the locals NSW and Qld def Victoria. The trend con-tinued into the night game with SA remaining undefeated with a win over Victoria and NSW

dominating Qld with another win. The 5th Test went back out to Queanbeyan, this time at the Queanbeyan BC, with the unde-feated SA winning again against Qld and the poor old Vics getting dusted by NSW.

The final day and the 6th test was played at Belconnen with the game for the series being played between the previously undefeated SA and NSW, with NSW getting the better of them on the final match. Qld beat Vic-toria leaving the Vics with no wins for the week.

The Final results were SA 5 wins, NSW 5 wins, Qld 2 wins

and Victoria 0 wins. South Aus-tralia was declared the winners with 18 rink wins over NSW 16.

In between all the test match-es the Australian champion-ships were held. We play fours, pairs and singles, with each State nominating their teams for championship. The final re-sults were Fours won by NSW team of M Bateman, P Chorley, K Bowcock, M Gosper 24 def D Ryan, S Cooper, B Anderson and R Cooper 16 from NSW as well. The Singles was taken out by M Turner Qld 31 def N Pederson SA 22. The pairs final was won by R Edwards and J Gregory SA

22 defeating R Ward Jnr and D Thulburn 21.

All the boys had a great week, with the ACT boys providing fantastic greens and all host clubs deserve a big thanks for the support and help they offer throughout the week.

Don’t forget to contact the Greenkeepers Association if you have any queries about our trade.

STATE PENNANTSThe Post-Sectional phase of Dis-

trict and Zone Pennants is well and truly underway in most areas and qualifiers in each Zone will be look-ing toward their participation in the State Pennant Finals scheduled for the 9th–11th August. For those who qualify one of the key things will be the appointment of a Side Manager to take care of the many aspects required on the weekend. I would urge clubs to appoint a club member who has the organisa-tional capability to handle what is required. The SMC will be issuing a Side Manager’s Information sheet, setting out the important require-ments for the finals series.

It is not unusual for some sides to seek the use of a player who may not have fulfilled the eligibility re-quirements during sectional play to have qualified for post-sectional play. Clubs are required to com-plete form 4.21 “Application to Waive Eligibility Requirement for Post-Sectional Play” and submit it through their District/Zone to the SMC for approval. This should be done in sufficient time to allow for

a decision well prior to the finals series.

As we consider the 2014 Finals Series we look forward to 2015 and Bowls NSW is now seeking expres-sions of interest from clubs to host the 2015 State Pennant Finals Se-ries. Full details are available on the homepage of the Bowls NSW website.

2014 STATE ROOKIES SINGLES AND PAIRS

Entry forms for this popular event are now available through your District/Zone or on the Bowls NSW website.

Entries are to close on 25th July with all entries, together with pay-ment, to be forwarded direct to Bowls NSW.Draws will then be done and forwarded to Zones for publication. The State Finals for both events will be held at the Ray-mond Terrace Bowling Club on 1st–2nd November.

2014 BOWLS NSW CLUB CHALLENGE

The SMC have made two chang-es to The Conditions of Play for this

year’s event. The Mens Silver Divi-sion eligibility has been extended to players with a No 3 pennant grading or below in the current season and all pairs games will now be 18 ends in duration.

Entry forms have been circu-lated to all clubs and entries will close on 14th August with the draw to be published by 4th Sep-tember. First round games are scheduled to be completed by Saturday 20th September. The State Finals will be conducted at the Warilla BC on the weekend of 5th–6th December.

2015 STATE CONDITIONS OF PLAY

The SMC is hopeful that a draft of the proposed 2015 COP will be cir-culated in July for comment with the Board to give final ratification of the document in September.

This would enable publication of the 2015 COP by mid October.

This timeline has been set up to allow for any new changes to the Laws of the Game from World Bowls in August of this year, which we stand by for.

S tarting on 10th January this year Frank Peniguel set out

to create a Guinness world record for “most bowling clubs played at in a 12 month period”.

Playing a mandatory 10 ends per club at 3 clubs a day Frank estimates that his record could be set as high as 900 clubs. To date Frank has played at 276 clubs; this is slightly behind schedule (due to bad weather and vehicle break-down), but he plans to make up the shortfall once daylight saving resumes.

To keep up to date with Frank’s progress you can check out his blog at www.hittheroadjack.net.au.

The Difference between Aero & the othersWhen you buy other brands you will note it will be only Aero that offer you a written guarantee that every set of every model is the same.Aron Sherriff, saw this on the greens and this has given him the confidence to change to Aero Bowls in the prime of his career. Better Equipment. Better Game.

Times have changed.Aero Bowls have designed 9 different models to suit bowls all over the world. We make bowls very differently from the other brands. Aero are years ahead in technology giving bowlers the world’s most advanced and accurately made bowls. Turning out absolute precision day in and day out is our only aim.One need to only look on any green and you’ll see it is only Aero Bowls that have the same line everytime. This has never before happened in the history of the game.A date stamp on an Aero means nothing in terms of line. A 21 stamp model will be the same as a 26 stamp model. Aero hold their value for this important reason.

Things have changed. Aero have arrivedA state of the art factory, perfect sets, written guarantees, over 70,000 perfect bowls and one thing that every bowler has to agree on, the ability to deliver the same line everytime™ no other brand comes close!

Continuing success• Aero are the only Bowls sponsor of the Australian Open to

be held on the Gold Coast over the next 5 years.• Aero are a sponsor of the Australian Premier League (APL).• We are the only Bowls Company to support Bowls at the

grass roots level by being the Official Bowls Partner of Bowls Australia.
