100 People Who Make Windsor Work – Revisited Friday 14th September to Friday 12th October
In 2018 the Festival marks two significant Centenaries: the end of the First World War and Women’s Suffrage. These significant moments in the life of the nation are reflected throughout this year’s programme.
Our literary series provides the platform to discuss the role of women: Shami Chakrabarti talks about her book Of Women: In the 21st Century, Professor June Purvis about the life of
Christabel Pankhurst, Jenni Murray runs through A History of the World in 21 Women and Matthew Dennison rediscovers Caroline of Ansbach.
The First World War is remembered through music and visual art. Eton College’s Great War Remembrance trail offers a chance to view the ways in which its fallen are commemorated, Orpheus Sinfonia and Baritone Roderick Williams present a concert programme which includes music composed during the war, whilst The Choir of St George’s Chapel’s For the Fallen offers music with associations to the Chapel. Voci Chamber Choir celebrate Hubert Parry’s centenary including his Songs of Farewell, and artist Hughie O’Donoghue speaks about his series of paintings Seven Halts on the Somme.
But there is also so much more in the programme: a visit from The Choir of Westminster Cathedral to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of St Edward’s Catholic Church, a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and several local choirs, our Associate Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, in the Waterloo Chamber, and talks from Michael Rosen, Patrick Gale and Salley Vickers.
I hope that you will enjoy discovering these Festival events, and that we will all share in the festivities throughout the fortnight.

PRINCESS CHARLOTTE AND THE SCANDALOUS GEORGIANS WALK Hilary Thompson
When Princess Charlotte, only child of King George IV, died in 1817 her uncles abandoned their mistresses, rushing to marry and produce the next sovereign of the House of Hanover.
George IV spent more than £1million between 1820 and 1830 to transform Windsor Castle into a ‘Gothic’ masterpiece – the same Castle that had incarcerated Charlotte’s grandfather King George III during his bouts of ‘madness’ in his last years.
Learn more about these scandalous royals on this engaging tour amid the wealth of elegant Georgian architecture found throughout Windsor.

EAT, DRINK, RUN.Bryony Gordon
Bryony Gordon was not a runner. A loafer, a dawdler, a drinker, a smoker, yes. A runner, no.
Following the emotional rollercoaster of laying her life bare in the mental health memoir Mad Girl, Bryony began to realise that getting outside, moving her body and talking to others for whom life was also an occasional challenge might actually help. Less than a year after weighing herself at over 16 stone she ran all 26 and ¾ miles of the London Marathon.

OF WOMEN: IN THE 21ST CENTURY Shami Chakrabarti
Shami Chakrabarti’s latest book, Of Women, is a powerful, urgent and timely polemic on why women still need equality, and how we get there.
Considered the greatest human rights abuse on the planet, not limited to one country or historical period, gender injustice is an ancient and continuing wrong. As we move forward in the 21st century, a time of crisis the world over, Shami will lay out the huge challenges we face with honesty and clarity, outlining what we do next and putting women’s rights at the centre of the progressive political agenda.

The beautiful city of Vienna forms the backdrop to this lunchtime concert.
Strauss was in his early twenties when he composed his passionate Violin Sonata. Inspired by his new love and future wife, soprano Pauline de Ahna, it hints at the glamorous, swirling scenes of Der Rosenkavalier that would follow. The 'Improvisation' at the heart of the work also sets the scene for some of the most iconic works by Fritz Kreisler. The master of the Viennese miniature, these include his farewell work Viennese Rhapsodic Fantasietta which closes the curtain on the Viennese ballroom of the 20th Century.

PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA: SCHUBERT, STRAUSS AND MENDELSSOHN Richard Watkins HornAntony Hermus Conductor
The Philharmonia Orchestra make a welcome return to the Waterloo Chamber with three great works of German Romanticism, conducted by rising-star conductor Antony Hermus.
The two completed movements of Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 are an object lesson in orchestral writing, described by a critic at the first performance as ‘a sweet stream of melodies…so crystal-clear that you can see every pebble on the bottom’.
Inspired by a walking tour of Scotland taken by the composer, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 vividly depicts the wild and romantic landscapes of the country, whilst the influence of his romantic writing can also be heard in Strauss’s lyrical Horn Concerto No. 1, performed by Richard Watkins, one of today’s most sought-after horn players.

OUR UNINVITED GUESTS Julie Summers
Julie Summers describes herself as a biographer and historian. But most importantly, she is a story teller.
In this beautifully illustrated talk, Julie looks at some of Britain’s country houses occupied between 1939 and 1945 by people who would never otherwise have set foot in such opulent surroundings. The extraordinary circumstances thrown up by the war meant that Blenheim Palace was occupied by schoolboys, whilst Audley End played host to Special Operations Executives. Northern Scotland was ideal for training secret agents and Shropshire offered inspiration to Ronald Knox when translating the Bible.
This will be an afternoon full of secrets and surprises.

With a delightful orchestration of the work and guided by a narrator, we welcome back the energetic Orpheus Sinfonia to explore the tales of Babar with you in this interactive performance.

In the composer of Jerusalem and I Was Glad, many imagine a stolid Victorian gentleman. Featuring the works of the composer, a narration of his life and musical items which demonstrate his influences and experiences, this evening will reveal that Hubert Parry was a much more intriguing and unconventional character than that.
Discouraged by his conservative family, Parry was a precocious talent. Guided by greats such as SS Wesley and George Elvey, organist at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, he amassed considerable knowledge and skills, and emerged a towering figure of British music, inspiring generations of young composers after him.

HIDDEN WINDSOR WALK Leslie Grout
Hidden Windsor’ does not necessarily mean places off the beaten track (although this tour will take in a few of these), but items of street furniture and buildings that residents and visitors pass by without a second glance.
From incongruous bits of metal, which apparently serve no useful purpose, to evidence of medieval sally ports, pictures of Shakespeare and Ben Jonson, and the remains of a Gothic Revival creamery can all be found on or behind a busy High Street.
Leslie Grout will show you items many of us just take for granted.

In the sequel to her bestselling book A History of Britain in 21 Women, journalist and broadcaster Jenni Murray celebrates great women from around the world – rescuing some from obscurity and shining a new light on familiar names.
Those who led while others followed. Those who stood up and spoke out when no one else would. Those who broke the mould in art, journalism and politics. They each fought, in their own way, for change.
This promises to be a unique, personal, lively and accessible history from the Radio 4 presenter and national treasure.

To commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I, returning Festival favourites Orpheus Sinfonia present a specially curated programme with leading Baritone Roderick Williams.
Taking us through from the beginning to the end of the war, the powerful, yet sensitive theme from War Horse and George Butterworth’s setting of A Shropshire Lad sets the scene of a world on the brink of collapse. Like Butterworth, W Denis Browne and Ernest Farrar lost their lives in battle, but here we have a special opportunity to hear the exquisite music they left behind.
A musical reflection both poignant and uplifting, the evening will draw to a close with Prokofiev’s ‘Classical Symphony’ premiered in 1918 and the positivity of the emerging Jazz era of Gershwin and his contemporaries.

With Debbie Keenan as your guide, walk the streets of a town that has seen hangings and burnings at the stake, as you hear stories of strange sightings in The Great Park and a Royal ghost spotted by The Queen.

THE FIRST IRON LADY: A LIFE OF CAROLINE OF ANSBACH Matthew Dennison
The intellectual superior of her buffoonish husband George II, Caroline of Ansbach is credited with hastening the Enlightenment to Britain through her sponsorship of red-hot debates about science, religion, philosophy and the nature of the universe. In her lifetime she was compared frequently to Elizabeth I and considered by some as ‘the cleverest queen consort Britain ever had’, yet history has forgotten her.
In this talk journalist Matthew Dennison will reverse this neglect, uncovering the complexities of her multifaceted life: an 18th century woman of great political astuteness and ambition, a radical icon of female power.

600 YEARS OF ROYAL MUSIC
Since its foundation in 1348, music has played a core role in the daily life of St George’s Chapel. This exhibition of items from the Archives and Chapter Library celebrates the history of the Chapel’s choir, organists and organs. Over centuries they have contributed to the development of the English choral tradition, provided inspiration in divine service and added to the splendour of many Royal occasions, including Royal weddings and Garter services. It includes 14th century manuscript music, an edition of the first musical setting of the Book of Common Prayer and the 19th century household accounts of the choristers’ lodgings.

100 PEOPLE WHO MAKE WINDSOR WORK – REVISITED
In 2008 Derek Reay held an exhibition for the Windsor Fringe Festival titled 100 People Who Make Windsor Work, the idea being to show the diverse range of occupations and pursuits of people who make up our community. Now, 10 years on, Derek has revisited this community, where there have been some changes. Some people have retired, some have moved on and sadly a few have died. In most cases others have continued the work and, in a few instances, new occupations have been added. The world we live in has necessarily become more security conscious and this has had its effect in our community. A limited edition hardback book will be available with profits being donated to charity.
