DUTY OF CARE
Schools have a duty of care to ensure the safety of their students. This involves providing a safe physical and emotional environment for students. Risks to students that involve use of the Internet can generally be considered foreseeable risks of harm or injury, which schools have a duty of care to take steps to prevent.

DUTY OF CARE
Will my child be protected from viewing inappropriate material?
Yes. The NSW Department of Education and Training manages web filtering to reduce the risk of students viewing inappropriate material on web sites, such as pornography.
Is my child's privacy protected?
Yes. Your school or TAFE policy on student access to the internet makes it clear that:
– personal information and information that could result in a student being identified will not be revealed
– personal account details remain confidential.

WEB FILTERING
Web filtering technologies prevent access from a computer to particular types of internet content. The Department actively uses filtering technologies to prevent access to material that can damage the network or degrade performance significantly.
Web filtering technologies are also used to restrict access to material which is considered inappropriate based on its subject matter, for example, depictions of violence and pornography.

Alcohol This category includes URls that sell, promote, or advocate the use of alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, and hard liquors.
Anonymizers This category includes URls that enable anonymous Web browsing through an intermediary to prevent unauthorized parties from gathering personal information, but also allow users access to any Web page and bypass blocking software. Pages that provide free proxy IP addresses are also included in this category.
Art/Culture/Heritage
Web sites in this category contain virtual art galleries, artist sites (including sculpture and photography), and other cultural topics, such as museums, ethnic customs and country customs.
Auction This category includes URls that offer access to online auctions. Online auctions are rarely monitored; therefore these sites may expose users to material that would otherwise be filtered under categories such as Pornography, Weapons, Nudity, or Violence.

A FINAL REMINDER
Web filtering alone is not a web safety solution. Schools are also required to implement ICT Acceptable Use Agreements for students, ensure appropriate supervision of students using the Internet and educate students to participate safely in a global information environment.
