Family Holidays/Perfect Attendance

Parents are encouraged to book their holidays to coin-cide with the school breaks. Regular attendance at school is a necessity both for academic success and for students to feel part of the school community. We acknowledge perfect attend-ance in December, March and June.

Parent Council Update:

Thank-you to all families who participated in our fall Chocolate fundraiser. We were able to raise enough money to fund the following:

Library books to run the Forest of Reading program

Scientest in the School for every classroom

Graduation photos for each grade 5 student

Field trip supplement for each student

Briarcrest Bulldogs team shorts

Through other fundraising efforts, the Parent Council has also committed to purchase 10 new Chromebooks and a set of Dash & Dot robots to be used by the entire school this year.

A special shout out to the small team of dedicated parents who’ve volun-teered their time to help make fundraising at Briarcrest a success. We could-n’t have done it without you! CONGRATULATIONS OCTOBER FUTURE ACES

SCHOOL EVENTS

Riste A. All ran their hearts out. They sure gave it their all. Congratulations go out to Kai and Breazzlyn who repre-sented Briarcrest with dogged determination at the TDESAA City Finals on October 26th. Way to go Bulldogs!

Halloween Activities

Our Halloween Parade took place right at 8:45, followed by our Future Aces Assembly.

Social Justice Club

The Social Justice Club is fundraising for an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. We are collecting new and small toys, sporting equipment, children's underwear and t-shirts, and school supplies. Items will be brought over by Madame Bryson's family so must fit in two large suitcases! All addition-al items will be donated to a Women's Shelter.

Thank you for your support!

Islamic Heritage Club

On October 26, students were invited to the library to learn about Islamic Culture. All ac-tivities were student run and student created. Thank you to all the presenters and to the teacher-leaders, Mme Badaloo and Mrs. Rao.

Superflex Has your child told you about Superflex?

He’s a super-hero who fights “unthinkables” like Rock Brain (who gets stuck on an idea and won’t be flexible), or

DOF “Destroyer of Fun” (who gets too com-petitive and ruins the fun), or Brain Eater (who gets easily distracted), or

Energy Hare-y (who has too much energy) or Glass Man (who has huge reactions).

This is a social thinking program that we are using

at Briarcrest to help students develop a better understand-ing of their own reactions—and to give strategies on how to fight these “unthinkables” which effect our relationships and our learning.

Cross Country

The Briarcrest Bulldogs Cross Country team ran their hearts out this fall! We had over 100 students participate on the team. Congratulations goes to our Cross Country Bulldogs who qualified for the West Region Champion-ships. Daniella F, Breazlynn T, Kai S, Jessica B, Ivy W and

Kindergarten Gate:

Parents and guardians picking up children from the kindergar-ten area are asked to be diligent about keeping the gate closed.

Kiss and Ride:

A reminder that there is a Kiss and Ride on Rangoon right behind the bus loading zone every morning from 8:10 to 8:25 and

after school between 3:00 and 3:10. Parents are encouraged to make use of this to help ease the congestion at morning drop-off.

Front Door Drop Off:

Student drop off and pick up should be at the back of the school. It is the safest place to collect and drop off. We ask that you refrain from dropping off your child at the front door in the morn-ing, or after lunch, unless

they are late. If your child is late, they must stop in at the office to sign in.

Girls and Boys Soccer

Congratulations to the Girls and Boys soccer teams for very suc-cessful seasons. The Girls won all three games in their initial tour-nament without even allowing a single goal! In the semi-final game of the Western conference, the girls lost a close 1-0 decision to the eventual Western champions Millwood.

The Boys also had a stel-lar first tournament, winning 2 of their 3 games and advancing to the Western quarter finals where they lost to Tumpane School 2-0.

Both teams showed great sportsmanship, grit, and determination. They really gave it their all, and made Briarcrest proud.

Special thanks to all the parents who came out and supported the team, especially those who drove the students to tournaments and friendly games.

Dear Parents and Students,

As your Trustee, I wanted to write this letter to let you know of my current situation and aspirations. As well as being a TDSB Trustee, I sit on the Toronto Board of Health as its education representative. The Board includes several city councillors including Mike Layton – Jack’s son. Last summer, Mike called me and said the NDP was looking for nominees for the Spadina-Fort York riding for the next provincial election. I had moved downtown about a year ago to be closer to the University of Toronto where I am pursuing doc-toral studies. After some consideration, I have decided to seek the nomination to be a candidate. My hope is to be a candidate in the June 7th provincial election and to advocate for communities at Queen’s Park. I will continue to serve our schools as your Trustee, as I have done for the past seven years. I will continue to answer your calls and respond to your emails. I will also continue to work on nine initiatives for this year: 1) Paid employment for people with intellectual disabilities 2) Addressing community violence 3) Advocating for a community centre for Etobicoke Centre 4) Improving bike safety by reducing “dooring” incidents 5) Developing partnerships to improve the condition of school fields 6) Rolling out keyboarding for grade 3 students 7) Rejuvenating Kipling Collegiate 8) Developing partnerships for community programming at Central Etobicoke High School 9) Finding the Richview Bell Having the Richview Bell displayed at Richview CI! As always it is a great honour to serve as your Trustee. I will continue to work hard for our students and our schools. Also, I wish to express my gratitude to all of those who helped in the search for the Richview Bell (please see the story in the Etobicoke Guardian). Yours sincerely,

Chris Glover TDSB Trustee Etobicoke Centre
