    Causes of the War

    The following events represent themajor events along the way to war.While it would be hard to point toany one event that singularly led tothe Revolution, there is no doubtthat the American view that theywere entitled to the full democraticrights ofEnglishmen, while theBritish view that the Americancolonies were just colonies to beused and exploited in whateverway best suited the Great Britain,insured that war was inevitable.

    800 British troops on April19th, 1775. The battle broke outat Concord. Seventy-threeBritish soldiers were killed andover 200 were wounded. TheAmericans lost 49 soldiers and

    Valley Forge-Winter 1777-1778

    With the British Army secure

    in Philadelphia, the Americanarmy settled into winterquarters at ValleyForge. Itwas a winter of hardship andsuffering for the troops. It wasalso a winter of training, in

    which the American troopswere taught how to beprofessional soldiers.

    Battle of Yorktown 1781

    General Cornwalis arrived in Petersburgin May of 1781. After receiving conflicting

    instructions, Cornwalis went to Yorktownand began preparing a naval base there.General Washington moved south and,together with French ground and navalforces, surrounded the British army,forcing its surrender and effectively

    ending the war.
