Civil Engineering (CVE) Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and

maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works such as bridges, roads, canals,

dams and buildings. Civil engineering is the oldest engineering discipline after military engineering, and it was

defined to distinguish it from military engineering. It is traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines including

environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, water

resources engineering, materials engineering, coastal engineering, surveying, and construction engineering. Civil

engineering takes place on all levels: in the public sector from municipal through to federal levels, and in the

private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.

Opportunities exist in the public and private sectors in large numbers in all branches of design, construction and

maintenance, infrastructure development in both Mauritius and abroad. Right now constructions industry is

booming as there is growth in infrastructure requirement throughout the world. This is going to stay for next few

decades. Scope of civil engineers lies with many developing countries in Middle East, Africa, and Asia where

infrastructure development is picking up and civil engineers are in great demand.

Civil Engineers can find job in Government departments, private and public sector industries, research and

teaching institutions etc. Job opportunities for civil engineers are expected to increase as fast as the average for

all jobs, although the construction industry is vulnerable to fluctuations in the economy.

Civil engineers will always be needed to maintain and repair existing facilities and structures and to construct

new ones. After doing Bachelor degree, one can look for jobs in road projects, building work, consultancy firms,

quality testing laboratories or housing societies. The experts say there is a high demand for experienced civil

engineers in developed countries for construction of highway, skyscrapers/high raised buildings, dams,

suspension bridge and other infrastructures.

Civil engineers are employed in all the major construction projects carried out by the state or central

government, the railways, private construction companies, military, engineering services, consultancy services

etc. Civil engineering graduates can also go in for research and take up teaching or they can open their own

independent consultancy services.

• Will I be able to succeed?

Studies in Engineering can be effectively managed with the right concentration in class, regular study

(review) hours daily, and dedication to this cause throughout the semester.

• What if I find the course too hard?

i. Students are encouraged to maximally interact with their lecturing staff, especially in class

and in tutorial sessions to overcome any difficulties.

ii. A continuous monitoring system allows students’ progress to be effectively managed

throughout a semester of academic activities by Professors and Lecturers.

• How many hours per week are spent for theory and practical classes?

6 theory subjects of 4 hours of lecture time and 3 hours of 2 laboratory sessions are scheduled/week.

• How many hours will be required for me to devote to studies?

Regular attendance of classes & regular review and study usually only demands two to three hours

of work per day.

• Are there any assignments or tests to evaluate students’ understanding level?

i. After completion of specific units or chapters, assignments are given to help the students get

prepared for semester-end VTU examinations

ii. A component of overall evaluation of any theory or practical subject is internal assessment,

of which three are held for each theory subject and the best two results are averaged out.
