Page 4: Bruderkrieg - Baccus 6mm

The DeutscherKrieg of 1866 Prussia and Austria were in confrontation over Schleswig-Holstein, a state shared by both countries following the 1864 war with Denmark. Bismarck inflamed the confrontation, hop-ing that France, Italy and Russia would leave them to it. The question was, would the Prussians be able to stand against the might of the Austrian Imperial Army? In 1860 the German parliament had halted the plans of King Wilhelm to reform the Prussian army in reply to a crisis in the state. In reaction to this the king ap-pointed Bismarck as his Prime Minister. Bismarck was a hardliner who made the changes to the army despite any opposition. Bismarck‟s, and Wilhelm‟s, aim in making the Prussian king‟s position stronger in Parliament, either with or without Austria, had been achieved.

Apart from Russia the Austrians had the largest army in the European arena, however Austria‟s 850,000 plus soldiers couldn‟t mobilize in the few short weeks allowed. The Prussians began the war with 350,000 men against, not including their Italian allies, Austria‟s 320,000 men. The Prussians were better prepared and organised it seemed. The well trained Prussian soldier would prove deci-sive; they were also armed with breech-loading rifles. Their Austrian counterparts had to make do with out-dated tactics, old muzzle-loaders, marching in close columns and using bayonet assaults. The outcome was in the balance.

Troop types Infantry units in this era formed in increasingly more open formations with a Skirmish line in advance and a formed reserve deeper in the rear of the formation. In attack however, columns were often used to de-liver fast moving assaults like the Austrian “Stosstactik”. Infantry: Most infantry, known as Regulars, Land-wehr, Grenzer, Guard, Foot Guards, Grenadiers, Fu-siliers or any other name, are formed units and are armed with Muzzle or Breech-loading Smoothbores or Rifles and bayonet. They can deliver their fire by command or individual shots to break up attacks or rely on the charge to break the target.

. Skirmishers: Jaegers, Kaiser Jager, FeldJagers, Ber-saglieri or Sharpshooters etc. These are not generally depicted by distinct bases of their own, but by a Skir-mish capability factor which is assigned to standard infantry bases. This represents the infantry base‟s abil-ity to Skirmish. However they can also be represented as individual Infantry bases as well.

Cavalry units did not generally fare well against the increasing ranges and rates of fire of Infantry and Artillery fire during the period. Compounding the issue was that Cavalry formations were often parceled out piecemeal by both sides‟ generals. The cavalry arm therefore was mainly used in pre-battle scouting, harassing a retreating enemy or providing rearguard actions to delay the enemy. In some cases though, shock action was employed by cavalry, such as the Austrians at the Battle of Custoza.

Light cavalry: Hussars, Uhlans or Lancers, Reiters, Light Horse and Uhlans etc. Cavalry trained to scout, Skirmish and screen in front of the army, but also capable of charging.

Heavy cavalry: Dragoons, Cuirassiers, Heavy Horse & Carabiniers etc. These are cavalry trained to charge but, are also capable of scouting and screening.

Artillery and Rocket units were mainly used to sup-port defensive lines by breaking up attacking move-ments. They would also be used in suppressing enemy lines, counter battery fire and closely supporting at-tacks. The war had a mix of Smoothbore and Muzzle Loading or Breech Loading Rifled artillery; it was generally therefore used to engage targets at a mixture of ranges. The Austrians were used to grouping and massing their artillery at key points whereas the Prus-sians in particular were slow to mass and found they had to expose themselves and move in closer to sup-port attacking formations with their own artillery. Artillery: Batteries were able to closely support infan-try or cavalry attacks and unlimber close to the enemy line. The Heavier „Corps‟ or „Reserve‟ guns were usu-ally placed in support of troops in defense, however they could also be deployed forward on the gun line.

Tempo & Bombardment

Polemos — Bruderkrieg 1866 5

Tempo bidding (CDB p.10) At the start of each move the CinC throws 1D6 and gets this number of tempo points (TPs) plus:

Prussian CinC’s: • 4 TPs for an Energetic CinC. • 3 TPs for an Experienced CinC. • 2 TPs for a Listless CinC.

Prussian Subordinates: • 3 TPs for each Imposing officer. • 2 TPs for each Competent officer. • 1 TP for each Confused officer.

Austrian CinC’s: • 3 TPs for an Energetic CinC. • 2 TPs for an Experienced CinC. • 0 TPs for a Listless CinC. Austrian Subordinates: • 4 TPs for each Imposing officer. • 3 TPs for each Competent officer. • 2 TP for each Confused officer. German CinC’s: • 3 TPs for an Energetic CinC. • 2 TPs for an Experienced CinC. • 0 TPs for a Listless CinC. German Subordinates: • 3 TPs for each Imposing officer. • 2 TPs for each Competent officer. • 1 TP for each Confused officer. Italian CinC’s: • 3 TPs for an Energetic CinC. • 2 TPs for an Experienced CinC. • 0 TPs for a Listless CinC. Italian Subordinates: • 3 TPs for each Imposing officer. • 2 TPs for each Competent officer. • 1 TP for each Confused officer.

Bombardment phase (CDB p.10) If an unmodified dice roll of, 2 for the Austrians, 2-3 for the Italians or 2-4 for the Prussians & Germans occurs for any artillery firing this result is an automatic BS result and it is immediately applied to the firers.

Maximum ranges are:

Bombardment Definitions

BS = Bombarding Shaken (BS) - bombarding base(s) take one level of shaken. Bombarding bases will not fire in next bombardment phase or give support in this turn. All units must limber up and move back one full move.

BCF = Bombarding Cease Firing (BCF) - bom-barding base(s) will not fire in next bombardment phase or give support in this turn.

BNE = Bombardment No Effect (BNE).

TBS = Target Base Shaken (TBS) - target base takes one shaken level.

TSF = Target Shaken & Fall Back (TSF) - target base, plus any base behind and in contact with it, take one shaken level and fall back 1BW.

Close Combat, Pursuit & Morale

Polemos — Bruderkrieg 1866 7

Pursuit Modifiers (CdB -Page 21)

Army Morale (CdB - Page 23) At the start of the game, multiply the number of subordinate officers under the direct command of the CinC by: • 2 - For Italian & German army’s critical morale factor. • 2.5 - For the Austrian & Prussian army’s critical morale Factor. The result is the army‟s critical morale factor. Each time a subordinate officer‟s force becomes spent, throw a D6 and deduct the result from the army‟s critical morale. Once the factor falls below 0, the army is broken in defeat.

Firstly decide on a Minimum number of bases in your army. You will keep generating formations until this minimum is reached or exceeded. Roll for the Grading of the CinC and any attached Army assets if available as detailed in the army list. The first formation to be generated in each army list is an Infantry Division. Dice as directed to decide the number of Brigades in the Division, Battalions or Regiments in the Brigade and their type and class. Then Dice for the grading of the commanding General and the number of and type of the Corps or Divisional Artillery units if available as detailed in the army list. Once the first line Infantry Division is complete, dice at random for what the next formation will be; this may be a Cavalry Formation or Allied Bri-gades or even other units like Royal Saxon Army for instance, or even another Infantry Division. Continue to dice again for the composition, type and class until this formation too is complete.

Once any other type of formation has been gener-ated, the formation which follows will always be a line Infantry Division; therefore line Infantry for-mations will always equal or outnumber all other type of formations within your army. When the minimum number of bases you decided to start with is reached, continue to dice for the formation you are currently generating until it is complete. Do not stop generating part of the way through a formation, only when it is complete. You may therefore exceed your minimum by some mar-gin.

Historical Situation Elements of the Prussian Second Army used the gaps in the Riesen Mountains to enter Bohemia. The 5th Corps, as it exited the gap near the village of Nachod, was al-most caught on the march. Leading the Prussians to advance apace and take the hills above the town of Wenzelsberg. The Austrians, for their part, were on their way to take up position in Wysokow, and block the main road. However seeing the Prussians the Austrians wheeled straight into the attack and approached the Prussians positioned on the hill. The Austrians were brutally shot down as they attacked up the hill; the needle gun allowing the Prussians to sim-ply fire more effectively than the Austrians who were attacking with the bayonet and armed with muzzle-loading rifles. The Prussian cavalry now entered the fray, riding down the road attempting to stop the Austrians finally getting to Wysokow. A fierce cavalry engagement ensued. The Prussians now moved forward to occupy Wenzels-berg as more Austrians began arriving; this turned into a bloody confrontation with fighting in the village sweep-ing back and forth with neither side giving ground. After a couple of hours of hard fighting the Prussians finally began to fall back through the village, but somehow managed to hold on until support arrived. As more Aus-trians arrived at the battle the focus of the attack changed to Wysokow where the battle was decided. As the newly arrived Austrians broke into the town the Prussians were trying to force their flank.

Terrain The terrain is very flat and open with the area being cov-ered by grasslands and cornfields with a few rice fields as well. The villages are on small hill shown by the contours as that kept them from flooding and the woods and tree lined canals causing some problems for the troops. Terrain Effects: Steep Hills +1

Cavalry may not advance to contact.

Steep slope Impassable to artillery except on road, when they count as shaken, whether travelling up or down All troops count shaken after ascending a steep hill. Towns & Villages:

May only be negotiated by columns 1BW wide, moving at 1BW per turn.

Counts as level 2 obstacle to units in combat. Obstacle level 2 to fire. Enclosures, farmland, rough ground, Artillery limbers, wagons:

Cavalry may not advance to contact.

All troops half speed except infantry with Skirmish capability 2.

Counts as level 1 obstacle to units in combat. Obstacle level 1 to fire. Woods:

Infantry move 1BD, unless Skirmish capability 2, which move 1BW.

Impassable to other troop types.

Counts as level 1 obstacle to units in combat. Obstacle level 1 to fire. Mountains are all impassable. Wenzelsberg & Wysokow are both 2 town bases in size. Nachod, Methau, Kleny & Schonow are all 1 town base in size.

Objectives The Austrian objective is to take and hold both Wenzels-berg and Wysokow. The Prussian objective is to prevent the Austrians taking and holding Wenzelsberg and Wysokow. The game starts at 8:20am and has turns of approx 20minutes and ends at 15:40pm.

Historical Outcome

Around Wysokow the Prussian needle gun forced the Austrians into the attacking, the columns they used proved useless against the rifle. Subsequent and outstandingly brave bayonet charges, high casu-alty rates and continual attacks were in the end a waste; the Austrians were finally a broken force and withdrew from the field. Well over six thousand Austrians fell to the Prus-sian for the loss of about a thousand men.
