BULLDOG BULLETIN JUNE 2013 BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE SOUTH AUGUSTA MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE SOUTH AUGUSTA 101 YEARS IN 2013 CHECK OUT THE WEBSITE ON : http://www.communitywebs.org/safc/ Management Committee Report The Seniors teams are not performing well at the moment and its important that the fans continue to get behind them by travelling to Pirie to supporting them and getting up the club to provide that encouragement. This is when the true fans come out, take a mate or work colleague to the club for a beer or two and a meal on the Friday night or after the game, we are still only 2 wins from the top four so if the lads can turn it around soon we still have a chance for the finals. On a better note the under 18s are in top position and playing well despite 5 of their better players in the A Grade at the moment. The player’s auction concluded last week with Brett Johns winning over $1,100 when the combination of Mark Horner, Brandon Hurt and Carmen Kernahan receiving the most points over the 3 week period. Dale Khan and Kingsley Schupelius family won second prize worth $355 with the combination of Brock Laube, Georgia Irvine and Tyson Black and third prize was won by Mark Lukich with the combination of Jason Lukich, Clayton Milera and Carlee Margatich. Many thanks to Graeme Jones the auctioneer who once again did a great job for the players auction to raise to total pool to $3,700 with over $1800 going back to the football operations and the other members who supported the auction by buying other players. Well done to the Indigenous players from the juniors that represented the Port Augusta team at the Power cup in Adelaide. Port Augusta won the Cup this year and Under 18s players Corey Laughton and Billy Jo Martin represented the club well over the week of matches with the final being played before the Port Power match against Geelong. Pictured is Captain Corey Laughton with the Cup. Events in the next month Saturday 22 rd June Souths vs Port at Pirie followed by cheap meals DJ at the club after the game.

Ben plays Full forward in the A’s and kicked 4 goals in the premiership win last year. Daniel Brusnahan, brother of Simon Brusnahan also played 50 club games. Chris Heron reached 150 A Grade games and he has played in 2 A Grade premierships in 2006 and 2012 playing on the wing or on the ball, resting as a forward, he is known for his spectacular leaps often taking great marks.

Central oval update- From the Transcontinental Paper 5th June 2013 There has been a mixed reaction to the approval for the Central Oval development from local football club presidents. While all the presidents were supportive of the development some were concerned with how the project was being carried out. Under the development plans South Augusta Football Club will have their clubrooms at Central Oval. South Augusta president Gary Kernahan was supportive of the development approval. “For the good of the town it’s terrific news,” he said. “It’s a whole new ball game for sport.” Mr Kernahan said South Augusta members had voted to move to Central Oval but finer details would have to sorted out before a move is made official. “We are in the process of discussing a move to Central Oval,” he said. “We are still waiting to talk to the council about how it will work. There is a lot still to happen before we make the move however we looking forward to continuing dialogue with the council to make the move happen.”

Page 5: BULLDOG BULLETIN june 2013 - communitywebs.org · Title: Microsoft Word - BULLDOG BULLETIN june 2013.doc Author: shirlem Created Date: 6/20/2013 10:30:28 PM

Central Augusta Football Club president John McAuliffe also said the development was positive for the town but had concerns. “I see the project as a sporting precinct as positive for the town,” he said. “And if the lighting and playing surface improve it will be positive for football as well.” However Mr McAuliffe said he would have liked more consultation. “I do not like the way the whole process has been put forward and carried out, he said.” “I would like to see more communication and transparency.” Mr McAuliffe also said that if Central Oval were to become South Augusta’s homeground it might pave the way to play more games at Central Augusta’s ETSA Oval. West Augusta Football Club president Brenton Harris also thought the project will be good for the city if executed properly. “I think the development is a step forward for Port Augusta, but the council need to ensure they get it right and take into consideration the requirements of all the sporting codes that will be using the facilities,” he said. “As sports in Port Augusta is one of the largest forms of entertainment and social interaction for young people in the area we need this type of investment to entice more people to get involved in sports to keep them occupied.” Mr Harris also said the project could see SANFL or AFL games played in Port Augusta. “If it is done right, there is consultation with the footy clubs and the SGL, it will be great for football and I envisage larger crowds, especially with football and netball at the same venue making it a family day out,” he said. “If the oval surface and facilities are of a reasonable standard there is great opportunity to host AFL pre season games plus in the future even a round of the SANFL.”

You are invited to the 1993 Premiership Reunion to celebrate 20 years since the big day. Date: Saturday 17th August 2013

Player profile of the Month- Mark Gillard

Mark travels from every week to play for Souths from Adelaide and he has been invaluable this year with 2012 top Ruckman Alan Margatich being injured for most of the time so far and other talls such as David Robinson having work commitments. Mark, together with Brock Laube, have been shining lights in what has been an indifferent start to the year. Born: 18/8/90 Darwin

Previous Clubs: Virginia, Orrorroo Position: Ruck/ Forward Currently studying: Double degree in Sport and recreation management and Aboriginal studies. Favourite Food: Everything, Favourite drink: Beer Other sports: Cricket, Basketball, Best movie watched: The Godfather Part 1 and 2 Best book read: Muhammad Ali, his life and times, Who would you have dinner with if

you had the chance: Kobe Bryant, Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Rock, James Gandolfini. Best moment: Winning last years A Grade Grand Final What do you like about South Augusta: A proud club, made me feel welcome from Day 1, Good Food ( well done Whitey)

Colts reports Look at the current Budget and you’ll notice that 25 of the 32 names in the 2013 A Grade list played Junior football for Souths so juniors are very important to the future of the club. Under 15’s Report The lads are going well and are currently in top position with 1 loss and 6 wins and this has been done with 4 players consistency coming up from the Under 13s each week. Ten players were selected in the North Adelaide trials to represent Port Augusta and 1 player Trent Ritter will play in the carnival in the school holidays against other SANFL under aged Under 15s teams. Dallas Barnes and Hamish Boully have made the Under 14s North Adelaide teams for the carnival, well done lads . Ritts Under 13’s report

The U13's are travelling along well. Although we have not managed to beat Westies either of the times we have played them, we have not lost to the two Centrals teams. Congratulations to the boys that got picked for SAPSASA, Marshall Stuart, Mitchell French, Rowan Irvine, Angus McInnis and Will Bolitho who was also won the best Port Augusta player for the week. Recent Bulldog of the day winners are: Marshall Stuart, Stefan Horner and Will Bolitho. Jake Collins

Under 11’s report The under 11’s are going along very well at the moment. Jason and I are currently working on systems, hard ball gets, linking plays, defensive running and creating space. The young men continue to show enormous courage in tight situations and are still aggressive at the ball. There are too many good players to name however it is very encouraging to see the older men reading the balance in the game and are able to shift momentum, whilst it’s also encouraging to see the younger men finding a lot more of the ball. Keiron Keeler Under 9s’ report The Under 9’s have had a better few weeks, kicking more goals than the first month, and notching up 2 good wins. Some stand out players for the past month have been Tyreece Fielding, John Weimer, Beau Renshaw, Ty Franks, Heath Green, to name a few. A special mention goes to Issac Waye who picked up his second Bulldog thus far this season, but more importantly, he has shown some outstanding skill and toughness when battling the older boys in the Under 11’s. It has been fantastic to go watch the Under 11’s play each week and see 6-7 Under 9’s playing good footy for both South under 11 teams. Ryan Struck

BILLY’S CORNER

Trevor White’s wife Joylene who together with Trevor do so much for the club in the catering department also is multi-skilled and plays the bagpipes. Joylene has been playing bagpipes for 52 years, just as well Trevor enjoys the sound or perhaps can’t hear too well!. Sadly the Port Augusta Bagpipers have only 2 members left and played their last gig at the club on Saturday night in front of an appreciative crowd. Some would say there are a few South members who have plenty of wind and should have taken up the cause!

Trevor wants to thanks the Shamrocks Netball club for their help with the catering and the teams involved with the Friday and Saturday night teas. The Players teams are performing well together on the after the game teas and the Football Committee starred after the last game, no help from Coutts and Buck. Trevor says that the Laube, Barrett and Grantham teams are the best performed at this stage of the season with customer service, cleaning and attitude. The winning team wins the prestigious Hennessy trophy for best performed during the year including a free tea voucher from the club, second prize gets a fishing trip with Couttsy, keep up the good work boys.

The football break weekend often brings on the boys trips away and several of the lads ventured to Lucky Bay near Cowell for a spot of fishing. Highlights of the trip included Conrad and Todd Kernas walking 17 kms back to base from Cowell being picked up 1 km from home at around 5am in the morning, that’s great training lads. The worst fishing award went to Graham Coutts who was unlucky over the 2 days closely followed by Gazza Kernahan who looked better suited to cooking, cleaning and looking after the lads than fishing.

Kelly Grantham and Brian Shillabeer are back from their overseas trips with Denise and Cheryl and although a full report of the trip has not yet made to the Bulletin, word is that Kelly travelled everywhere and couldn’t find a dart board regardless of England being the world champions! That was his excuse anyway when Kean beat him the first game after he returned.

DECIDING ON WHAT CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE South Augusta is a MAC ambassador and as such needs to spread the message on safe driving. Here is the latest Bulletin from the Motor Accident Commission. For the ordinary person, the decision to buy a car is usually the second greatest expense that you will ever need to consider (after buying a house). For organizations, decisions on the company fleet are an important part of business decisions. Don’t base your decision on vehicle selection purely on economic reasons, with a cheap vehicle being selected with no consideration regarding its safety rating. Research shows you are five times more likely to survive a serious crash when driving a safer car. Consider the ten points of choosing a vehicle a safe vehicle:- 1. Look for a vehicle with a safety rating of 4 stars or more. Many dealerships are displaying the safety ratings of 4 and 5 star rated cars with the stickers and swing tags. Look out for these stickers and tags when making your purchase decision.

2. In many cases, reasonably priced vehicles score more stars than some of the more expensive models. So check the vehicle’s star rating and the safety features that you can expect in most 4 and 5 star rated vehicles.

3. For a car to get a 5 star rating, it must have Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Different manufacturers have different names for ESC - for example Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP). ESC is a computer-based system that helps drivers maintain control of their vehicles, particularly in adverse conditions such as wet weather. It continuously monitors a vehicle’s speed, steering wheel angle, direction of travel and cornering acceleration, automatically applying individual brakes if there is a risk of skidding or overturning.

4. Crumple zones protect the occupants by absorbing the energy generated on impact during a crash. Specially designed crumple zones give way, whilst maintaining the structural integrity of the cabin to protect the driver and passengers.

5. Most new cars now have driver and passenger airbags. However it is important to realize that these alone are not an adequate safety measure in a serious crash. There are many 2 and 3 star rated vehicles on the road that have airbags but are lacking in some of the other safety features.

Page 10: BULLDOG BULLETIN june 2013 - communitywebs.org · Title: Microsoft Word - BULLDOG BULLETIN june 2013.doc Author: shirlem Created Date: 6/20/2013 10:30:28 PM

6. To protect passengers in side impact crashes, we recommend cars that are fitted with side and curtain airbags. Curtain airbags usually drop down from the top of the side window, creating a cushion between the occupant and the side of the car and protecting the head and shoulders. Side airbags usually activate from the seat or door panel, protecting the torso. 7. The cabin of the car is designed like a cell, making it impossible for the engine to breach the compartment in a front-on crash. This also ensures that the steering column, dashboard, roof pillars and floor panels are not excessively pushed inwards onto the driver and front-seat passenger. Ideally, all doors should still open and close after a serious crash.

8. The oldest and still the most effective vehicle safety feature is a seat belt. Increasingly car manufacturers are installing three-point lap-sash seatbelts in the middle of the back seat, instead of the single lap belt which is not as effective in a serious crash. Check that the car has a seat belt warning chime to alert the driver when seat belts have not been fastened.

9. Seatbelts should be fitted to all seats in the car, not just front seats, to prevent serious whiplash in a crash. Whiplash is a leading cause of injury in minor crashes and can cause significant spinal, neck and head injury in more serious cases.

10. Ensuring the vehicle is roadworthy and that all devices discussed here work correctly is important. A proper regime of servicing the vehicle is important to consider before buying the vehicle and to maintain once it is purchased. There are other considerations apart from safety – shop around for a competitive finance rate if financing; check the personal property security register to ensure it is not encumbered; make sure warranty is in writing as should be any contract that you sign; and consider the appropriate insurance to place on the vehicle.
