Letter from the

If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep
on walking.
~Buddhist Saying
With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all
things are attainable.
~Thomas Foxwell Buxton
Now is that lovely time of the year when the OMS students
have the opportunity to show how much they know! The start
of spring brings a time of renaissance or rebirth. Just as a
renaissance man excels in all fields, our students have been
champions in athletics, art, academics, civics, mathematics,
music, science, technology, and writing!!
The Florida State Assessment (FSA) is beginning April 10th for
8th grade, April 18th for 7th grade, and April 24th for 6th
grade. Make healthy choices during testing weeks and do
your personal best!
Oakridge continues to thrive with its talented student body,
exemplary staff, and spirit of kindness and community!

Special Olympics
Ms. Martin and her students were excited to participate in this year’s Special
Olympics on February 10! The Special Olympics are a time for students with
disabilities to shine! Many times these students don’t get to participate in events
such as basketball games and science fairs. They deserve to be able to show their
many talents, and the Special Olympics is one of the events that gives these
students that chance.
This year is especially exciting because this is the first year Oakridge is
participating! Ms. Mart in, the special education teacher, has decided to have her
students participate in Basketball and Arts of All. Make sure to follow these
special students as they participate in exciting events such as the Science Fair and
the Academic Challenge!
Big thanks to Ms. Martin for making such a rich, educational experience for her
students!!

7th Grade Visits FGCU
Volume 2 , Issue 4
On May 11th, the 7th grade will visit
Florida Gulf Coast University. They
will be touring the campus, academic
classrooms, sports facilities, and
student housing. To learn more about
the trip, I interviewed Mrs. Howell, a
7th grade science teacher.
about the future:
It is never too early to start thinking
about this because colleges base
their admission on a student’s
achievements in high school. Since
many of our Oakridge students begin
taking high school crucial courses in
the 8th grade, 7th grade is the perfect
time to start having discussions
about possible career paths.
On March 28th all the 7th grade
students took the Kuder Career
Interest Assessment. Based on their
survey answers, students were able
to see possible career choices. If
students investigated further, they
were able to see average earning
potential as well as education
requirements for those positions. The
trip to FGCU will give students a
chance to see their desired majors
are very close.
Last year we were able to visit
student housing and dorm rooms.
Students saw the university’s library
and dining options. The 7th graders
were also invited into classrooms
where FGCU students were able to
give a brief overview of their college
experience as well as answer
questions that the OMS students
had.
Middle school students will be
given the opportunity to see what
an actual college campus looks
like, as well as opportunities that
are available to college students.

7th Grade Mock Trials
Civics in Action! The 7th grade Civics classes conducted Mock Trials on March 22 and
23, 2017. Students became prosecuting and defense attorneys, jury members,
witnesses, a bailiff, and the accused. After carefully analyzing several cases and
working on the case during spring break, they prepared their remarks and questions.
The Media Center was transformed into a courtroom. Mr. Manento presided over the
trials as Judge Manento and, as a former teacher of the law, offered advice and
recommendations after each trial. Periods 1 and 4 presented the case of The United
States of America vs. John Wilkes Booth.
Students learned how to prepare arguments, analyze information, apply rhetorical
devices, and perform the civic duties of American citizens. In addition, they had great
fun, and they all did a fantastic job!
Thank you Ms. Forrest, Mrs. Pignatiello, and Mrs. Polanco! Thank you Mrs. Ferreira for
filming the trials. And thank you, of course, to Judge Manento!

NJHS Washington D.C. Trip
This year the OMS NJHS team had plans
to travel to Washington D.C. over spring
break. We asked our very own 7th grade
Civics teacher who accompanied students
last year, Mrs. Polanco, why she thinks it is a
good idea to be going on this trip.
“I think it’s a good idea for the 8th graders to
go on this trip because they have already
been through 7th grade Civics and are
learning world history now. They get to see
the heart beat of the United States of
America.” We also asked what the objective
of the trip was and her response was, “To let
the students explore many historical
elements of the US.”
Unfortunately, Nature sent the gift of snow to
DC, and the trip had to be postponed to
June 5 - 7. So it will be summer in the city for
our NJHS students who have worked so hard
this year!
Ms. Poulos, National Junior Honor Society
Advisor, will be travelling with her NJHS
students.
