SOUTH JUNIORS PLAY 100 CLUB GAMES

If you look at the Colts Premiership photos in the Colts Corner you will be lucky to see 1-2 players

from each photo who go on to play 100 Senior club games for the Bulldogs. Congratulations to Marcus

Kerin who played his 100th A Grade match in Round 8 against Lions, to Sam Maule who played his 100th

senior game (94A+6B) in Round 9 against Port and to Clayton Milera who should play his 50th senior

game (37A+13B) on Sunday against Centrals. Sparky is a dual A Grade premiership player and is the

son of SAFC legend Mick. He has carried on the family tradition of being a key defender in spite of

his pleas to Bolesy to play him up forward. Sam has developed into a key defender also and is the son

So you may ask, why do we put in the time and energy into the Junior players when so few go on to

play many games for the club? The club has a role in the community of instilling confidence, physical

fitness, self- esteem, teamwork, ability to follow instructions, listening skills, respect and feeling

part of a club and team that will hopefully make them good citizens. Junior players who may not do

well in a classroom environment may do well in sport and many who may not go on to play many A or B

grade games may become excellent Committee members or club volunteers. Many thanks to the past

and current Junior coaches for the time and effort they put in and the Junior coaches who have been

involved with Marcus and Sam over the years such as Craig Ritter, Adam Grantham and other Junior

coaches who should be commended. Many thanks also to Colts sponsors who assist with funding such

as : Senvion , Greg Edwards Century 21 Terry Gardiner Meats, Hello World (Under 18s), Pat Hynes

(Under 18s), Office Café, Willark Constructions, Sports Power, KFC, Hungry Jacks, McDonalds,

FROM THE PRES.

The (shortened) 2018 season is already past the half way mark with all grades looking like finalists.

We wish them and their coaches all the best for the rest of the season and ask you all to get behind

them in any way you can. Quite a busy month around the club as the contents of this newsletter will

prove. Many people have put in numerous volunteer hours in various roles/ways and continue to do so.

The recent SAFC Family day was a perfect example of what this club can achieve on the back of our

volunteers. Thank you if you fall into this category and continue the good work you are doing. If not

please consider where you can be of assistance to OUR great family club. Become a member (if not

already) or encourage others to join, support Friday night meals and bring others with you, support

upcoming club events…all the little things that will help improve this club. You may like to check out

sanfl.com.au/volunteer and consider nominating one (or more) of our great volunteers for a

Volunteer of the Year Award. Nomination and entry terms are found there and entries close

Wednesday 1st August so don`t delay. Club membership is growing but we still need more of you to

sign up (family ($35)/single ($25)/pensioner). All senior players (over 18) are required to do this and

all junior players should be part of a family membership. To finish on a sobering note can we all lay

off the umpires without whom we would not have a game. Before you shout “advice” to them think

about how that portrays you and our club. Believe me umpiring any sport is not an easy task. Consider

their view of incidents which frequently are not the same as your view from the boundary. Finally if

you have better eyesight than our umpires feel free to join them and show us all how it is done! Mick

The MAC Seminar was well attended by both players and

interested parents at South Augusta Football Clubrooms.

Michael from SAPOL provided an excellent presentation

for 1 hour on various subjects including safety driving,

speeding, seatbelts, driving under the influence of drugs

and alcohol and general rules. Players and parents were

attentive and learnt a lot and the link with tragedies in

Page 3: BULLDOG BULLETIN JUNE 2018communitywebs.org/safc/assets/bulldog-bulletin-june-2018.pdfCameron McDonald (from Golden Grove), Greg Shirley (from OS), Kriston Thompson, Jarryd Warren

other football clubs was important in that message. Players were provided with a meal by the

Football club after training and the Ladies Committee was thanked for catering for the night. It was

pleasing to see some of the Under 18s at the seminar as well and their parents who saw that the

presentation was important to their future driving.

The MAC Football round will be held on Sunday 15th July vs West Augusta where a medal will be

presented and players will be asked to wear black arm bands to honour those who have been killed in

car crashes.

INDIGENOUS GUERNSEY 2

SGL has programmed a Multicultural Round (thanks to our 2017 initiative) in Round 12 on Saturday

21st July (v Solomontown in Port Pirie). As in 2017, the new guernsey has been designed by Lavene

Ngatokorua and is kindly sponsored by Senvion (specialists in wind energy solutions). Thanks to Mark

Whitehead for pursuing this generous sponsorship. As we will be playing in Port Pirie we will have a

guernsey presentation and auction the night before (Friday 20th July) and a function at the club

after returning from Port Pirie. We would like to see lots turn up for this now annual event.

SPECIAL SCHOOL CLINC Eight of our regular volunteers attended the PA Special School coaching clinic- Frank, Josh, Cody and

Jackson Tuip, Cameron Reid, Kelvin and Angus McInnis and David Williams. As expected it was

another rewarding experience for all involved.

WHITE RIBBON ROUND

As a progressive community minded club, we were proud to be approached by the White Ribbon

organization to see if a White Ribbon Round can be included sometime this season. The SGL have

advised that this won`t happen this year but may be programmed for 2019 season. White Ribbon

supports the elimination of violence towards women.

PLAYERS INFORMATION

Just a warning that players cannot leave the bus while arriving from Port Pirie after the game with

opened containers of alcohol walking to the club over council dry areas and unlicenced areas.

Page 4: BULLDOG BULLETIN JUNE 2018communitywebs.org/safc/assets/bulldog-bulletin-june-2018.pdfCameron McDonald (from Golden Grove), Greg Shirley (from OS), Kriston Thompson, Jarryd Warren

Those returning after coming back in a car to the venue they can’t come in with opened containers

can’t come into the club with their drinks they have with them because they will be refused entry.

FAMILY FUN DAY HUGE SUCCESS!

Thank you to all the great volunteers who once again tirelessly worked cooking, serving and running

this great day. Despite the weather being a little unpredictable the crowd numbers probably doubled

from last year!!

Ignite Cheer & Dance Group were invited to perform and despite the misty rain they entertained the

crowd and gained valuable exposure for this community minded organisation. Thanks to Madeline

Little and dance crew.

U7s and U9s were also unstoppable in the unfavourable weather conditions. Some players even

doubled up on games to make up the numbers. Thanks to the coaches, players and parents for their

efforts.

Many thanks also to Alan Phillips for his technical knowhow, for running the scoreboard screen,

advertising our sponsorship, grand final snippets and Ignite video clips.

The Lions Club braved the elements to supply the crowd with hot donuts and chips. Also on offer at

other stations around the complex was hot soup, BBQ, fairy floss, and some fantastic home cooking

from the Colt’s cake stall. Great club members again volunteering and supplying food to add to the

success of the day.

Face painting & the bubble station drew a crowd of excited kids. Megan Collins doing a great job once

again. Almost 50 little faces coming away with fantastic artwork.

Unfortunately the weather didn’t enable Bec’s Jumping Castles to be used for the whole day. We

thank them for their patience & support and look forward to working with them again next year!!

Many thanks to Major Sponsor Senvion who provided funding for this great day and enabled

many children, junior players and families to attend and enjoy the day.

The Social Committee & Management Committee members dedicate many hours of their time and

efforts to ensure that the South’s family come together on this day. Look out for this event earlier

next year & bring the family along. Let’s make this a tradition for our juniors and families to enjoy!!!

Next event is Christmas in July!!! Dust off your “ugly” Christmas jumpers & come along to enjoy one

of Stitchy’s famous roasts.

The famous Red & White Ball is being planned for August and will be another event not to be missed!!!

Keep a look out for the advertising & tickets will be on sale soon!! Social Committee

SPONSORS UPDATE

Intersport are keen to support South and before the year kicked off they arranged a night where

South members and staff could go to the store and buy anything within the store and “South”

products were discounted, this proved to be reasonably popular. Mark Hanlon now has a deal where

if people went and purchased any goods at Intersport and mentioned they were a South person he

would accumulate a percentage of the sale to be given to the club in the way of goods or vouchers at

the end of the year. If the person was an Intersport rewards card holder the Intersport discount

would still apply, so in affect if you had a discount card from Intersport the holder receives a

discount and the club receives a credit in the store.

Great to see Greg Edwards from Century 21 become a Silver sponsor for the club and he has

requested that he would like to support the juniors as gives them a bit of extra drive maybe to

continue on playing. Many thanks for your contribution Greg.

BILLY`S CORNER

Former player and 5AU DJ Eamon Power was at the club last Sunday night. He was back in Port

Augusta for work. Eamon played 11 A Grade games in 1978 and says he regularly catches up with 1983

Premiership rover Chris Pelle (42 games 1983-1985) down Strathalbyn way. Eamon says he was happy

to move on from 5AU before the current station manager took over a few years after his departure!

Great to see Gavin Chandler, previously of BC Boys play up the club after the game against Lions.

Gavin was well received by the appreciative crowd and he even bought his fans from Woomera along

on the night. Great to hear some live entertainment at the club in a no pokies environment.

The first players auction was won by Harry Waterworth Syndicate who bought Kriston Thomspon,

( over $1,500) ,2nd was Peter Trewartha Syndicate who purchased Matt Downey and the Hey Hey

Syndicate who purchased Azel Stuart was third prize , well done to the players who had a great last

3 weeks and let’s hope they get a few beers out it.’ Many thanks to all of those who supported the

auction. Get your syndicate going for the next Auction on the 29th July 2018 after the Lions match

at Port Augusta

The A Grade must be close to a club record for consecutive wins, in 1938 the A Grade were

undefeated Premiers but there were only a limited amount of games in the 3 team competition that

year and in 2000 under Coach Boof Rivers South won 10 games in a row which was thought to be a

club record. Ask Harry Waterworth about the 1938 team as he remembers it and his comparison to

the 2000 team!

The club offers it condolences to the families of Geoff Benfell, Michael Gloede and Ian Allanson who

have passed away in the past month.

Geoff Benfell last played football for South in 2006 and played 25 A Grade games and 50 B Grade

games. Geoff also played and captained the B Grade Cricket side recently, playing A Grade over the

years as well.

Michael Gloede is the brother of the several South players including David, Paul, who coached the A

Grade and John Gloede who was also a player for several years.

Ian Allanson, a hardworker for Willsden as Treasurer over many years had sons who played several

years for South Football club, Brett and David. David also played Cricket for South in A Grade

premierships. We wish the families our best wishes at this sad time.
