BASICS OF THE FAITH How much do you know about the sacrament of Holy Orders? What’s the difference between bishops, priests, and deacons? Would you like to learn more about this sacrament and the graces it bestows? Join us for our next Basics of the Faith session on Sunday, February 2, 2014 from 8:45 to 10:15 am in the Maximilian Room (Rectory side entrance). Our topic will be Holy Orders. The session will include a PowerPoint presentation and time for questions. Coffee, tea, and cake will be provided. To be added to our mailing list for information on upcoming sessions, contact Anne Chavez at [email protected]. Outlines and narrated PowerPoints of previous topics are available at www.basicsofthefaith.org by clicking Basics of the Faith. This is an ongoing monthly series; you’re welcome to attend any individual session. No prior knowledge or preparation is needed.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR CONSECRATED LIFE—

FEBRUARY 2 In 1997, Pope John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. They have consecrated themselves to God by the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience and seek to live their baptismal promises more intensely. Here at St. Max, we were blessed to have the Norbertines from Daylesford Abbey in Paoli join us in celebrating our weekend Liturgies. They are designated by “O.Praem” which stands for “Ordo Praemonstratenis,” and they follow the Rule of St. Augustine. Daylesford Abbey is a Roman Catholic community of priests, brothers and lay associates of the Norbertine Order. The order was founded on Christmas Day in 1121 by St. Norbert in the French village of Premontre. Their charism is to balance prayer and contemplation with action. They do this by means of singing the Divine Office, praying for the salvation of souls, doing penance, and devotion to the Eucharist and the Blessed Mother, especially under her title of the Immaculate Conception. In a special way, please remember in prayer those priests who have been a part of our weekend ministry and who help with our penance services. Fr. Ted Antry Fr. Tom Rossi Fr. David Driesch Fr. WE NEED A FEW GOOD MEN! The St. Maximilian Kolbe Knights of Columbus are hosting a Membership Recruitment Open House on Tuesday, February 11th at 8:15 PM in the Maximilian Room. Pizza and refreshments will be served. Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to all Catholic men, 18 years of age or older. Being a Knight is more than camaraderie. It is being involved with your community. It is supporting St. Maximilian Kolbe Church and School, as well as other worthy charitable causes. Parish Religious Education Program Updates:

On January 11th, Archbishop Chaput celebrated a Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul for all the Parish Religious Education Programs throughout the

Archdiocese. Four catechists from our parish attended and received an award in recognition of their anniversary years served:

Mrs. Joanne McManus 25 Years Mrs. Valerie Childs 20 Years Mrs. Carol Patterson 5 Years Mrs. Katie Sullivan 5 Years

Mrs. Kekette Jurchak has served 5 years but was unable to attend the Mass.

Our congratulations and gratitude to those Catechists!

Despite three snow cancellations to our classes, each grade has been working hard: Our Kindergarten students learned about the birth of Jesus and the visit from the Wise Men. They will soon be learning about the sacrament of Baptism and how much God loves them. Our First Grade students have mastered the Sign of the Cross, the Our Father and the Hail Mary. They are busy working on the Trinity..

Our Second Grade students are becoming more aware of Jesus’ great love for them and learning to understand and participate more fully in the Mass. This will help them be prepared to receive Jesus in their First Eucharist during the Easter season. Our Third Grade students are learning the Apostles Creed and studying about God the Father as revealed to Abraham, Moses and David. Next, they will explore Jesus, as God the Son, through His nativity, ministry and miracles. Our Fourth Grade students are completing the Ten 5-Commandments. They have studied them, memorized them and learned to refer to them in their daily lives. They will now begin to study the Beatitudes. Our Fifth Grade students have spent a great deal of time learning the mysteries and praying the Rosary, learning the seasons and colors of the Liturgical Calendar, reviewing the sacraments of Reconciliation, Conformation (as 5th grade lays the groundwork for Confirmation preparation) and Holy Orders and intensely covering the Mass—its prayers and parts as well as the roles of the priest and the congregation.

Our Sixth Grade students are preparing intensely for the Sacrament of Confirmation, to be received on Thursday, March 27th. In order to encourage the concept of service to one another, our candidates have each participated in three Community Service Projects either in the parish or in the community. In order to assist with choosing a Confirmation name, each candidate has reviewed the lives of various saints and chosen one to whom they feel they can aspire to or emulate. A thorough Saint Report has been completed and turned in by each student. These reports will be displayed in the vestibule of church the weekend of February 8th and 9th. Please take a few moments to admire these reports and be re-enlightened by these humble and amazing members of the Church! Our Seventh/Eighth Grade students spent the early days of Advent studying the history of the Jesse Tree symbols and sharing that knowledge with the Third Grade classes. AS they tun to a nw semester, they will return to their study of the Bible using the Teen Bible Timeline and continue intermittently with the many service project they perform. On Tuesday, February 11th, we ask our parish to pray for these students as they attend a special evening Retreat. The Confirmation Retreat will cover the 5 parts that comprise the Rite of Confirmation and will help deepen their knowledge of this great sacrament. By the end of the Retreat, the candidates will be fully aware of the Gifts bestowed by the Holy Spirit and express their desire to be more fully united and affirmed in their faith.
