Lots happening as the summer rolls in and things wind down a bit at the parish. We have Confirma on in June and later the gradua on of our seniors from Old Mission Montessori School. We have a Vigil for Pentecost at the Serra Center from 9:00 p.m. ll midnight and later on the beau ful solemn Feast of Corpus Chris . Our Guamanian sisters and brothers are preparing once again to build the altars on the lawn in front of the school and for the pro-cession with the Blessed Sacrament a er the 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon Masses. We have a new Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. She is Kim Sco , coming to us from the Diocese of Orange where she worked in the same posi on for eight years in a parish in Tus n. Kim is originally from Philadelphia and is married to Gary. They have a young daughter, Kiara. Kim will oversee and direct the Confir-ma on Programs 1 and 2, and the various Post-Confirma on Youth Ministries as well as Young Adult Ministry. We welcome Kim and her family to our parish family and wish them great happiness and fulfillment among us. When you read this I shall be far away in my na ve Ireland. It’s been two years! I will have some me with my mother and my sisters and celebrate 40 years since taking my vows as a Franciscan. We are six surviving-friars from a group of eleven who made profession at the Franciscan Friary in Killarney many (many) years ago, and we will be ge ng together to pray, reminisce and…well…how can I put this…stay up late!!? Last weekend saw Pope Francis in the Holy Land. He met with the Patriarch of Constan nople to pray for peace and unity among Chris ans and for a more toler-ant and compassionate world. I was taken with the ad-dresses of both church leaders and I par cularly liked the words from the Patriarch given at the Holy Sepulcher, the place where Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Morning. Here is part of his address:

The first and greatest message from this emp-ty Sepulcher is that death, "this last enemy" of ours (see 1 Cor. 15.26), the source of all fears and passions, has been conquered; it no longer holds the final word in our life. It has been over-come by love, by Him, who voluntarily accepted to endure death for the sake of others. Every death for the sake of love, for the sake of anoth-er, is transformed into life, true life. "Christ is risen from the dead, by death trampling down death, and to those in the tombs He has granted life."

Do not, then, be afraid of death; but do not also be afraid of evil, despite any form that this might assume in our life. The cross of Christ amassed all the arrows of evil: hatred, violence, injus ce, pain, humilia on – every-thing that is suffered by the poor, the vulnerable, the oppressed, the exploited, the marginalized and the dis-graced in our world. However, rest assured – all of you who are crucified in this life – that, just as in the case of Christ, the cross is followed by the resurrec on; that ha-tred, violence and injus ce have no prospect; and that the future belongs to jus ce, love and life. Therefore, you should work toward this end with all the resources that you have in love, faith and pa ence. Nonetheless, there is another message that emanates from this venerable Tomb, before which we stand at this moment. This is the message that history cannot be pro-grammed; that the ul mate word in history does not be-long to man, but to God. In vain did the guards of secular power watch over this tomb. In vain did they place a very large stone against the door of the Tomb, so that none could roll it away. In vain are the long-term strategies of the world's powerful – everything is eventually con n-gent upon the judgment and will of God. Every effort of contemporary humanity to shape its future alone and without God cons tutes vain conceit. Lastly, this sacred tomb invites us to shed another fear that is perhaps the most prevalent in our modern age: namely, fear of the other, fear of the different, fear of the adherent of another faith, another religion, or anoth-er confession. Racial and all other forms of discrimina on are s ll widespread in many of our contemporary socie-

es; what is worst is that they frequently even permeate the religious life of people. Religious fana cism already threatens peace in many regions of the globe, where the very gi of life is sacrificed on the altar of religious ha-tred. In the face of such condi ons, the message of the life-giving tomb is urgent and clear: love the other, the different other, the followers of other faiths and other confessions. Love them as your brothers and sisters. Ha-tred leads to death, while love "casts out fear" (1 John 4.18) and leads to life. God bless you, Fr. Adrian

Muchas cosas suceden al entrar el verano y las cosas co-mienzan a relajarse un poco en la parroquia. Tenemos la Confirmación en junio y más tarde la graduación de nuestros estudiantes de la Escuela Montessori. Tenemos una Vigilia de Pentecostés en el Centro Serra de 9:00 p.m. hasta la media-noche y más tarde la hermosa Fiesta Solemne de Corpus Chris . Nuestros hermanos y hermanas de Guam se están preparando una vez más para construir los altares en el cés-ped a la entrada y la procesión con el San simo Sacramento después de las Misas de 10:00 am y 12:00 del mediodía. Tenemos una nueva Directora para el Ministerio de Jóvenes y Jóvenes Adultos. Ella es Kim Sco , que viene a nosotros desde la Diócesis de Orange donde trabajó durante ocho años en la misma posición en una parroquia en Tus n, CA. Kim es originaria de Filadelfia y está casada con Gary. Tienen una hija, Kiara. Kim se encargará de supervisar y dirigir los programas de Confirmación 1 y 2 y los diversos Ministerios de Jóvenes, así como el Ministerio de Jóvenes Adultos. ¡Le damos la bienvenida a Kim y su familia a nuestra familia pa-rroquial y les deseamos mucha felicidad y plenitud entre no-sotros! Cuando ustedes lean esto ya estaré muy lejos, en mi erra natal, Irlanda. ¡Ya han pasado dos años! Voy a pasar un em-po con mi madre y mis hermanas y celebrar los 40 años des-de que tomé mis votos como franciscano. Somos seis Fran-ciscanos sobrevivientes de un grupo de once que profesó en el convento Franciscano en Killarney hace muchos (muchos) años, y nos vamos a reunir para orar, recordar el pasado y... bueno... ¡¡¡¿Cómo puedo poner esto... estar despiertos hasta tarde!!? El fin de semana pasado el Papa Francisco estuvo en Tierra Santa. Se reunió con el Patriarca de Constan nopla para orar por la paz y la unidad entre los cris anos y por un mundo más tolerante y compasivo. Me acogieron los discursos de los dos líderes de la iglesia y me gustó especialmente las pa-labras dadas por el Patriarca en el Santo Sepulcro, el lugar donde Jesús resucitó de entre los muertos en la mañana de Pascua. He aquí parte de su discurso: El primer mensaje y el más grande que sale de este Sepulcro vacío es que la muerte, nuestro “úl mo enemigo” (cf. 1 Co 15,26), la fuente de todos los miedos y pasiones, ha sido ven-cida; ya no ene la úl ma palabra en nuestra vida. Ha sido derrotada por el amor, por Aquel que voluntariamente acep-tó someterse a la muerte por los demás. Toda muerte a cau-sa del amor, a causa de otro, se transforma en vida, en vida verdadera. “Cristo ha resucitado de los muertos, por la muer-te, la muerte hollando; y a los que están en las tumbas la vida dando”...

…Así pues, no teman a la muerte, pero no tengan tampoco miedo al mal, independientemente de la forma en que se pre-sente en nuestra vida. En la Cruz de Cristo confluyeron todas las asechanzas del mal: odio, violencia, injus ca, dolor, humi-llación –todo lo que sufren los pobres, los indefensos, los opri-midos, los explotados, los marginados y los ultrajados en nuestro mundo–. Sin embargo, tengan por cierto, todos los que son crucificados en esta vida, que, igual que en el caso de Cristo, la Resurrección sigue a la Cruz; que el odio, la violencia y la injus ca no enen ninguna salida; y que el futuro es de la jus cia, del amor y de la vida. Por eso, hay que empeñarse en este sen do con todos los medios posibles de amor, fe y pa-ciencia. Además, hay otro mensaje que surge de esta venerable Tum-ba, ante la que nos encontramos en este momento. Es el mensaje de que no se puede programar la historia; que la úl ma palabra de la historia no pertenece al hombre, sino a Dios. En vano vigilaron los guardias del poder secular esta Tumba. En vano colocaron una piedra muy grande bloquean-do la puerta de la Tumba, para que nadie pudiera moverla. En vano hacen sus estrategias a largo plazo los poderosos de este mundo – todo está supeditado en úl mo término al jui-cio y a la voluntad de Dios. Todo intento de la humanidad contemporánea de programar el futuro por su cuenta, sin contar con Dios, cons tuye una vana presunción. Finalmente, esta Tumba sagrada nos invita a vencer otro miedo que es quizás el más extendido en nuestra época mo-derna: el miedo al otro, el miedo a lo diferente, el miedo al que sigue otro credo, otra religión u otra confesión. La discri-minación racial o de cualquier otro po está todavía generali-zada en muchas de nuestras sociedades contemporáneas; y lo peor es que frecuentemente incluso impregna la vida reli-giosa de los pueblos. El fana smo religioso amenaza la paz en muchas regiones de la erra, donde incluso el don de la vida es sacrificado en el altar del odio religioso. En estas cir-cunstancias, el mensaje de la tumba vivificante es urgente y claro: amor al otro, al diferente, a los seguidores de otros credos y de otras confesiones. Amarlos como a hermanos y hermanas. El odio lleva a la muerte mientras que el amor “expulsa el temor” (1 Jn 4,18) y conduce a la vida. Dios los bendiga. Padre Adrián
