Malaysia’s much-awaited flower and garden festival kicked up a storm once again this year with exciting colours and varieties of flora beyond your imagination. Themed as ‘Mesmerizing Colours’, FLORIA Putrajaya 2014 promised an exhibition of Begonias of various species that are native to moist subtropical and tropical climates in specially designed gardens and exhibits from 14-22 June 2014. This year being the 7th time this international flower and garden show was hosted, Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPj) organised a bigger and better FLORIA Putrajaya at its new and permanent site at the waterfront in Precinct 4.

PUTRAJAYA FLOWER & GARDEN FESTIVAL 2014

Mesmerizing Colours

This year, the event showcased a record number of designs from international participants comprising garden designers, florists and International Floral Societies & Associations. Among the exhibits were the indoor garden displays and outstandingly creative outdoor garden displays. While local and international expertise showcased more than 80 outdoor garden displays under various categories such as from government agencies, corporate bodies, private sectors, associations, growers, universities as well as secondary and primary schools.

The garden showcase came with a theme for each of the category and challenged the designer to think “out of the box” and to design a garden which had not been seen before. Highlights of FLORIA Putrajaya 2014 were the Wedding Gardens, Urban Gardens, Designer Gardens, Fantasy Gardens, Futuristic Gardens, Begonia Garden, Royal Garden, Innovation Garden and Indoor Pavilion.

As in previous years, ILAM was involved in the Designer Gardens by showcasing the creativity of local Landscape Architects in 5 garden showcases. Several ILAM representa-tives were also involved in the judging process for the outdoor garden showcase in various categories.

The Enchanted Wedding GardensThis year, the organiser challenged the garden designers with a themed garden design. The entries from Government sectors were given a challenge to design gardens incorporating a wedding theme. One of the outstanding gardens was the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) creation named “Celebrate Love”. The garden, divided into several sections, brought visitors through the journey of love from finding love to walking down the aisle, a wedding reception, family formation and retirement. The garden brought back nostalgic memories with the use of antique furniture and collectables. As night fell, the garden transformed into a colourful and romantic enclave with performers dressed in wedding attire, enchanting visitors walking past each section of the garden. It was a magical experience for all.

Urban Garden with a TwistCorporate gardens with the theme urban garden gave opportunities to designers to innovate and showcase something different. Most of the designs adopted recycled materials and transformed their space into a display of creative elements in the garden, exemplified by Alam Flora’s Garden showcase which proved how a small space in the urban area can be innovative, with multi-tier storage and water elements using mostly recycled materials. While Taman Botani Shah Alam showcased a gigantic canopy made with thousands of recycled drinking bottles.

Hanging Garden of PutrajayaOne of the highlights of FLORIA2014 was the organizer showcase of Hanging Gardens constructed using stacked shipping containers to create green spaces wrapping the two level garden with water cascading from the upper level. Garden elements such as walls and interior furniture were presented in bold colours to bring out the cheerful ambiance of the interior. Additionally, dry branches were used to wrap the garden perimeter to create a secret garden within the compound of the container garden.

The Glade: A Forest BeautyBy: LAr. Rozita Abd HamidAward: FLORIA Garden Gold Award

This garden encapsulates the ambiance of an enchanted forest; picture a maiden strolling gracefully through the glades as the sun shines, turning the glade into a golden forest with beauty and colour.

The Miracle of Rain By: LAr. Cyrus ChongAward: Floria Special Jury Award, Floria Garden Starlight Award

The sculptural garden was constructed using umbrellas to form the centre piece of the garden with splashing water drops forming the rain. The installation brings the message of climate change, water conservation and the importance of water in our life.

The Journey of TransformationBy: LAr. Ragubalan Bhaskaran

This particular garden creatively used several mirrors to represent self-reflec-tion as part of the journey of life. As guests walk through the garden and see the reflections, they are encouraged to improve shortcomings in life and at the end of the path, the colourful plants represent success and perfection.

ILAM Designer GardensThis year, ILAM was represented by 5 Landscape Architects namely LAr. Rozita Abd Hamid, LAr. Cyrus Chong, LAr. Ragubalan Bhaskaran, LAr. Zarina Mohamad Napia and LAr. Hazmi Hafaz.

The Continuum of BegoniasBy: LAr. Zarina Mohd NapiaAward: FLORIA Garden Creative Award

This garden design was inspired by the Begonia’s colourful flowers and its notable leaves. Various species of Begonias are planted here in a sinuous curve of different levels and heights, reflecting the characteristic of the plants. The garden also used several recycling materials such as gabion walls, and recycled plastic bottles and aluminum cans.

The Garden Art By: LAr. Hazmi Hapaz

The design of this garden used a series of geometrical archways to form different colours of frames which enclosed the beautifully captured beauty of the garden in every corner.

UTM Award Winning Exhibits at FLORIA 2014Behind every success there is a presence of effort, passion, creativity and dedication, and under the keen eye of LAr Dr. Sapura Mohamad as the staff in charge, with the help of En. Hassan Sahat, En. Mohd Azhari Amin and the support of the Faculty of Built Environment Department, the Landscape Architecture Department has again brought glory to UTM among other previous achievements, by winning the Gold and Silver awards under the first introduced category - “Decorative Wall” in the recent FLORIA 2014 Flower and Garden Festival hosted by Perbadanan Putrajaya. 14 landscape architecture, both second and final year students have translated the concepts of “Blush of Early Morn” for the Gold award entry and “Vertical Spectrum” for the Silver award work into an abstract manifestation of art, form and space which caught the judges’ eyes. Heartiest congratulations to the well-deserved victory.

The inaugural Malaysia Design Festival or MADE2014 was successfully organised by the Malaysia Design Council (MRM), in collaboration with professional design associations such as the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM), the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), Malaysia Institute of Interior Designers (MIID), Malaysia Industrial Designers Association (PEREKA) and the Graphic Design Association of Malaysia (WREGA).

The opening ceremony, held on the first day of the event, was officiated by Y. Bhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Haji. Zainuddin, the Chairman of the Malaysia Design Council (MRM). This was followed by a short introduction of each participating association. Immediately following the opening ceremony, a keynote speech entitled ‘An Insight of Design’ was delivered by William Harald-Wong, from The Design Alliance Asia.

This event was packed with exhibitions from each association and featured a series of design talks from all design disciplines. ILAM talks were presented by our members, LAr. Norliah Abd. Wahid with the title “Symbiosis” and Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Nurhayati Abdul Malek’s, “Design with Nature”.

Although this is the first of its kind organised in Malaysia, the event gained media coverage and was also listed in the Malaysia Book of Records as the design festival in which the most design associations participated.

Sky Beach & Water Based Activity DesignThis talk is the extension and more elaborate version of Nicole’s previous ILAM CPD talk on “Skyrise Greenery” such as:

• Design concept and parameters• Research on other beach pools, maintenance, sand choice• Installation methods & details: filtration system, heated pool and its cold air and other technical design criteria.• Running cost of the pool and hot Jacuzzi• Maintenance

Nicole Van Den Steenhoven is an experienced Landscape Architect at Bukit Kiara Properties who has been involved in the designing and developing of four different rooftop gardens of VERVE® Suites, Mont’Kiara. Her expertise covers the path from conceptualisation, design, and implementation, to maintenance of projects’ landscape, from the perspective of the client.

Creating Unique Aquatic Play Experiences with Grasslands and Slide Activity CentresA well designed play space helps shape the world that surrounds it, and most importantly, the people that play within it. Your choice of play features, structures, colours and themes all work together to invoke emotion and create the desired experience. To demonstrate this concept, this talk will spark your imagination by exploring two distinct product offerings that will deliver unique play experiences – Grasslands, and Slide Activity Centres.

Hutchinson has seen the successful completion of hundreds of projects and credits his achievements to listening, communicating, and taking action. Drawing from his past training in conflict resolution, Hutchinson has a unique ability to overcome the many challenges that can arise during the planning and construction stages of a water play project and works hard to synchronize the many different voices along the way, which include: area representatives, landscape architects, aquatic designers, local health authorities, municipalities, engineers, and contractors.

Mountain and VolcanoscapeCreativity & Prosperity

10-12 August 2015Mataram, Lombok

INTRODUCTION2015 marks 200 years since the largest volcanic eruption ever recorded in modern history occurred here in Indonesia. The eruption of Mount Tambara, a 4,300m high mountain and one of the tallest peaks in the Indonesian Archipelago, created new landscapes, buried three kingdoms and killed about 17,000 people. It also impacted global climate and created political and social impacts.

The phenomenon of Tambora, have inspired ISLA - Indonesian Society of Landscape Architects to call for landscape architects in the Asia Pacific Region and the world to contribute towards the sustainability and prosperity of what we call mountain and volcanoscape. The landscape created by the eruption of Tambora is an example of huge challenge for landscape architects to plan, design, and manage areas sensitive to disasters.

ILAM-Playpoint Hari Raya Open House

Date: 16 August 2014Venue: Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur

It is of tradition that ILAM hosts a Hari Raya Open House each year to celebrate Aidilfitri and to allow members to meet and greet. This year, the event was held with the collaboration of Playpoint at Le Meridien, KL Sentral, and was attended by more than 120 participants.

The event kicked off with a product talk by Playpoint, followed by a special playground design talk entitled “Kompan Design Studio – The Next Generation in Playgrounds” by Samantha Jeffrey.

An incredible feast began after these talks with an amazing array of buffet spread, replete with traditional and local dishes. It was indeed a rare occasion where members had the opportunity not only to celebrate a major festival together, but to spend time mingling with colleagues and friends.
