PARISHCATECHISMCLASSES2017–2018

Catechism classes are scheduled tobegin inourparishwith anORIENTATIONSESSION forparents/guardians andchildrenat10:15a.m.onSunday,September17thintheparishhall.OnceagainwewillutilizethePflaumGospelWeekliesliturgically-basedcatecheticalprogramthatprovidesweeklyhandoutswithashortdescriptionoftheSundayGospelplussuggestedactivitiesanddiscussionstartersforeachagelevel.Inkeepingwiththeseasonsandfeastsoftheliturgicalyear,childreninclassandwiththeirfamiliescanhavefunwhilelearningaboutJesus,hisChurchandtheteachingsofourfaith.

Those who would like their children to take part in catechism classes are asked to submit a completedREGISTRATIONFORMforeachchildassoonaspossiblesowemaybetterassessthesituationandbesuretohavetheadequatematerials required. A catechism registration feewill help defray some of the costs of running our program.Nevertheless, this requested fee should in noway be considered a reason to refrain from enrolling children forwhoseparentsthefeewouldimposeanunduehardship.

As a rule, each Sunday children participating in our parish catechism program gather in the parish hall with theirparents/guardians by 10:15 a.m. for some initial prayers and announcements. Then children break into their variouscatecheticalgroupsandproceedwiththeircatechiststotheirdesignatedclassrooms.Catecheticalclassesaredividedintothe following age groups: SEEDS (Preschool), PROMISE (Kindergarten – Grade 1), GOODNEWS (Grades 2-3), VENTURE(GRADES4-6)andVISIONS(Grades7-8).Parents/guardiansareaskedtoreturntotheparishhallby11:15a.m.tobereadytopickuptheirchildren.

WEAREINNEEDOFVOLUNTEERSTOSERVEASCATECHISTSandassistantsforeachdesignatedcatecheticalgroup.If youarewilling tohelp in anyway,pleaseadvise SharonCamier (ourPastoralAssistant) or FatherRobertPolz (ourPastor)assoonaspossible.Letusallprayforthecontinuedsuccessofourfaithformationprogramforchildren.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

WINNIPEGHARVEST:Membersofthecommunityareaskedtodonatewhatevertheyareableofnon-perishablefooditemssuchascannedmeat,cannedbeans,cannedsoup,cannedfruit,riceandpasta. ItemsareneededtobuildfoodkitsthataredistributedtoManitobanswho receive food from Winnipeg Harvest. Here at Saint John XXIII Parish we serve as aWinnipeg Harvest outlet every secondWednesday throughout the year. Parishioners withnon-perishablefooditemstodonatemaydropthemoffinourWinnipegHarvestDonationBoxlocatedunderthepamphletrackatthesouthentrancetothechurch.

KNITTING GROUP: The next gathering of the Knitting/Crocheting Group will be held onWednesday,September20th from1:00to3:00p.m.downstairsinRoom10.Allwomenandmenwho canknitor crochet are invited toparticipate. Over theyearswehavingbeencreating "welcomebaby" layettes tosupport mothers and babies assisted by Villa Rosa or Thrive Community Support Circle(formerlycalledPregnancyandFamilySupportServices)andsometimesforotherworthwhilecauses. Wegreatlyappreciatedonationsofyarnandother sewingmaterials. THELIVINGSACRIFICE It’sLaborDayweekend!Whowantstowork?Nobodyintheirrightmind.Ofcourse,plentyofpeopleinoursocietywillbeworkingrightthroughtheweekendsotherestofuscanrelaxandtendtoourbarbeques.Theymakethesacrifice;wegetthebenefit. Mostofuswillgobacktoworkeventually,neverfear.Evenretireeshavetaskstoperformthatproperlyfallunderthetitleof labor:yardwork, laundry,housekeeping,volunteering,caringforfamilymembers.Evenchildrenhaveworktodo.It’sSeptember,isn’tit?Thatmeansbacktoschool;let’shearacollectivegroanofsympathyforthekids. There’snoescapingthemanyresponsibilitiesthatcomewithbeingalive.Wehavetoseetobasichygieneeverysingleday,likeitornot.Wehavetomaintainourhealthbymovingourbodiesandsayingyestononprocessedfood.Wehavetouseandfeedourminds,too:Startalisttodayofnewbookstoreadbeforetheendoftheyear. WhyallthistalkofworkonLaborDayweekend?Becauseworkisgood.Theworkwedotomaintainourselves,orforthe sakeof thosewe love,or tomakea livelihoodareall vital towhat itmeans tobehuman.Daily, youand Iproducesomething: maybe it’s a meal, a clean-shaven face, or a 10-page report on the present economy. Maybe we bathechildren—orelders.Wemayteach,takeanorder,preachadecenthomily,plantseeds,pickvegetables.Wegiveourtimeand attention to peoplewhoneed it: familymembers, coworkers, sometimes strangers.We give our “living sacrifice ofpraise”toGod—yes,ourprayerisconsideredaformofwork.Thewordliturgymeanspublicwork. Our pastor, Father Robert, and our pastoral assistant, Sharon, are consideringstartingupthisfalltheRCIAprocess inourparish. Tentativeplans includeinitial inquirysessionstobeheld immediatelyfollowingMassonWednesdayevenings.TohelpusmakepreparationsfortheRCIAinourparish,pleaseletusknowifyoumightbe interested inparticipating. IHATETOTELLYOUTHIS,BUT... Tobehonest,Idon’tliketoday’sreadings.Ifindthemtroubling.Likeyou,I’minthetruth-tellingbusiness,yetIhardenmyheartagainstthismessage.Scriptureisnotwishy-washy,andthesepassagesareclear-cutdiamonds,andjustassharp.Jesus lays out the invitation—no, the obligation—to confront each other with wrongdoing in the spirit of benevolentcorrection.Mostofusprefertodecline,becauseit’sanickybusiness. A fewcaveatsare inorder. First,wehave tobe sureweknowwhat “right-doing” is. That involves takinga fearlessmoralinventoryofourselves:sortingoutthedifferencebetweenourpersonalpreferencesandGod’sowntruth.Thisinitialstepiswheremostwould-berescuersgowrong.Beforeapproachinganotheraboutthesplinterintheireye,we’dbestgettheplankoutofourown.Ithelpstobeginbyseekingcounselfromsomeonewiseandasking:AmIdoingthisright?DoIhavethefactsstraightbeforeItakeonthespiritualworksofmercyknownas“instructingtheignorant”and“warningthesinner”?Orisitmoreacaseofbeingcalleduponto“counselthedoubtful”oreven“forgiveoffenses”? Oncewe’resurewherewestand,wefacethesecond,equallyimperativetask:benevolentcorrection,withtheaccentonbenevolent.Toooftenwecomeoutswingingthesledgehammerofrighteousindignationinstead.Thestoriesofparentsscreamingmoral instructionattheirchildrenorspouseshurtlingaccusationsateachotherarelegion.Evenifwewhispertheneedtoreconsideracourseofaction,wemustcheckthatwe’renotsmilinginwardly,enjoyingthesuperiorpositiontoomuch.Self-righteousnessisthekillerofeverygoodintention.Itbearsrepeating:Self-righteoussmugnessbefoulsthemoralhighgroundandmakesitstink. Tobesureour intentionsarepure,wemightask:Do I feelmotivatedby love,orbyangerordisgust?AmIcalm,orrousedtodobattle?DoIaimtohelportobludgeon?Ifourintentionisanythingbutlove,we’renotpreparedtoengagethespiritofcorrection. When I’m inthesinner’sseat, Iadmit I rarelyrespondwell tocorrection initially.Ego-death isnodifferent fromanyother:MostofusmovethroughElisabethKübler-Ross’stagesofdying:denial,anger,bargaining,depression.Ifwefollowalltheway to the fifth stage, acceptance, we’ll profit from correction. Obviously it takes asmuch spiritual preparation toreceiveas tooffer thegiftof instruction. Justasyoucan’texpectababy towalk, youcan’texpectaperson todowhatthey’renotspirituallyequippedtodo.That’swhyJesusisclearthatthiskindofinterventionhappenswithinthefamilyoffaith.Spiritualmaturityisneededtoengagethisprocessandinformsitssuccess. –AliceCamille

TheministryofaltarserverisoneofseveralimportantministriesintheChurch’sLiturgy.AltarServersassistthePriest(andtheDeacon) invarious liturgicalcelebrations,especiallyweekdayandSundaycelebrationsoftheMostHolyEucharist.SomeAltarServerresponsibilitiesinclude:lightingthe altar candles, bearing the cross and candles in processions, assisting with incense and holywater, approaching the Priest (or the Deacon) whenever necessary to present the book, to helpreceivetheoffertorygiftsatMassandpreparethealtar,andtoassistinanyotherwayrequired.

Bothyoungerparishioners,fromaboutgrade4or9yearsoldandup,andadultparishionersareinvited to consider assisting in thisministry in our parish. Altar servers are expected to conductthemselvesinareverentandrespectfulmanneratalltimes.FormostMasses,serversshouldgatherinthebackoftheBlessedSacramentChapel(i.e.nearthesacristy)andbevestedatleast10minutesbeforeMass.DutiesafterMass,tohelpcleanupthesanctuaryandhangupservers’vestments,mayrequireanother10minutesorso. Preparationforthisministrymay include“onthe jobtraining”,adultmentoring,andsomescheduledrehearsalsbeforemajorcelebrationsoftheliturgicalyear.
