The month of October is a time when I invite us to renew our commitment to being disciples of Jesus Christ. Earli-er this month, we sent a 2018 Commitment Form to all registered parishioners to help you write down your commitment to Christian discipleship in the areas of Prayer, Service and Offering. I invite you to return your commitment form at Mass on the weekend of October 28-29 or send it to the parish office by November 13. In order to help us learn how discipleship is lived out in our parish, I asked several parish staff members to describe how their department lives out the call to Christian discipleship. Last week we heard from the Pastoral Care Department. This week we hear from the Liturgy and Music Department. In the coming weeks, we will hear from our school (October 22) and the Faith Formation Department (October 29).

It is in relationship with others and sharing the Good News that we are formed and fulfill our mission as disciples. When it comes to our lives of faith, we need the assurance of a stable, faithful, and thriving community that provides both support for living for Christ and opportunities to share Him. The coming together of God’s people to praise, worship and serve Him in the liturgy provides the foundation for our lives to bear fruit for God and celebrate our Lord as we share our time in prayer at Mass, Adoration, and in our homes. The liturgical ministries allow us to share our gifts in creating the environment, enabling and enhancing sung and spoken prayer, welcoming the newcomer, proclaiming the Word, and preparing for the Eucharistic banquet that proclaims and celebrates our Lord in our midst. —Dr. Ray Bannon, Director of Liturgy and Music

Proclamation about the Council of Catholic Women Archbishop Hebda has issued the following Proclamation: Whereas, this year of our Lord, two thousand and seventeen, marks the one hundred sixty seventh anniversary of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis; and whereas, the Archdiocesan Council of Cath-olic Women has been a vital organization in the Catholic life of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis since the time of its formation on March 25,1933 by Archbishop John Gregory Murray; and whereas, the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women con-tinues to encourage affiliates to work closely with their respective parishes in meeting spiritual and human needs by creating a spirit of unity through prayer, enrichment and service in fulfilling the Mission of Christ; and whereas, the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Min-neapolis wishes to recognize the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women's immeasurable contributions to the progress and welfare of families, parishes, communities and the poor of the world; therefore be it resolved, that I am pleased to designate October 15, 2017 as the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women Recognition Sunday in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

—Most Reverend Bernard Hebda, Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis."

My gratitude and prayers go out to the members of the Council of Catholic Women. Thank you for all that you do to enrich the life of our parish.

God Bless You, Father John Mitchell

One of the many blessings we have at our parish is the Eucharistic Adoration chapel. The adoration chapel is open to everyone. It is a quiet place to go to and get away from all of the noise of the world. Whether you come for a few minutes or spend an entire hour, it is always time well spent.

Our chapel is open Monday through Friday beginning at 7:00 am and closing at 11:00 pm. We are in need of volunteers to cover the following times:

and 3:00 pm (partner) Thursdays: 8:00 am (partner), 11:00 am and noon Fridays: 7:00 pm (partner) and 10:00 pm

School News

Rotary Club Visit Students in our Third Grade were visited by the Rotary Club of Fridley and Columbia Heights. The Rotary Club members talked about the service they commit to as part of their club and how they give back to the community. One of their service projects is to present third graders within Columbia Heights and Fridley with dictionaries that the students are able to use in school and take home to keep. Using a dictionary does not need to be a lost skill! The Rotary Club members had students look up a couple items in the dictionary. The third graders were very excited to have re-ceived the gift! We are grateful for learning about service from our fine citizens in the community. Thank you Rotary Club!

Word of Life “We must listen to God, who speaks to us. Having a well-formed conscience doesn’t mean we have all the answers to the complex problems in the world, but it does mean that we are sensitive to the needs and struggles of other people.”

Why Do We Do That? Catholic Traditions Explained

Question: Who is Ignatius of Antioch and what example does he offer us in Christian living as we celebrate his feast day on October 17?

Answer: As Bishop of Antioch (the modern day city of Antakya, Turkey), Ignatius witnessed to the faith during the reign of Emper-or Trajan, who ruled from 98-117. Persecution of the Christians broke out in Antioch, and Ignatius was captured and taken to Rome for martyrdom in the arena.

On his journey to Rome over land and sea, Ignatius writes seven letters to various churches. These letters give powerful glimpses into the theology and practice of the early church, along with in-sights into the role of a bishop as pastoral leader. Ignatius is the first to use the term “Catholic Church” to refer to the various Christian communities of the Roman Empire. The best known of his letters is the one he wrote to the Romans. Ignatius addresses influential Christians who might be tempted to intercede on his behalf, thus sparing him from martyrdom. As Christ willingly offered himself as witness to God’s total love, Ignatius, too, desired to be “food for the wild beasts,” so that he could become “the pure bread of Christ.” Eucharistic living was so crucial to Ignatius that he was willing to die in order to model himself on the Lord who willingly offered all.

Live The Liturgy—Inspiration For The Week Pope Francis constantly reminds us of the wideness of God’s mercy and its unconditional character. God is always patiently loving his children and opening the doors to his heart. We must, however, freely choose to accept God’s invitation and join in the feast of his love. We desire many things and we have restless hearts. We often attempt to quench our desire with things that are short-lived and shallow. All of us long to be satisfied and at peace. How do we announce to the world, in ways that are convincing and without judgment, that it is really God whom we seek?

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful “Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful.”

—Luke 6:36

Gospel Meditation

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time “My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?” Today’s Gospel parable is unsettling in several ways. The various images of rejection, mistreatment, and violence paint an unpleasant picture. Guests refuse to come to a feast, servants are killed, troops are dispatched. The King continues to try to fill his dinner hall, and then when someone finally does show up, the King throws him out for wearing the wrong clothes. What is going on here?

The message would have been a poignant one for his Jewish lis-teners. As the chosen people, they were the first to receive the “invitation” to share in the kingdom of God. But the chief priests and elders were uninterested in accepting Jesus and his authority; thus they didn’t show up for the feast. But what about those who did come? Something is expected of them as well. Donning a “wedding garment” is like being properly prepared to enter God’s kingdom. Just showing up isn’t enough.

Here it’s important to pay attention to the details. The King first calls his poorly dressed guest “friend.” The approach begins with mercy and kindness. But the man gives no defense for himself, and displays no desire to change. It’s as if he doesn’t really care to be there at all.

The question this raises for us is whether or not we are “dressed” appropriately. We may hang around the banquet hall—going to church, professing to be Christian—but are we sincere guests of

the King of kings? Do we truly ac-cept Christ’s teachings and live by them, or are we just showing up? The splendors of the invitation Christ gives us should not be taken for granted. We are called to share in a royal feast. May we all be grateful guests.
