Our Definition of Gifted

Gifted kids are people who think in a different way. They are more aware of the surroundings and act upon those thoughts about it. They are usually imaginative and love a good challenge. But just because you’re gifted doesn’t mean you’re the same as other gifted people. You usually just relate better (like minded peers). Gifted kids are real people so they shouldn’t be treated differently. And most importantly you can’t associate them with any certain look.

About Gifted Kids

Gifted Kids is a one-day programme providing a special curriculum for gifted and talented children. In Gifted Kids, we are able to not be afraid of being ourselves, because there are people that are Gifted and therefore understand us.

What is Gifted Awareness week?

Gifted Awareness Week is celebrated in New Zealand from the17th to the 23rd of June as an opportunity to draw attention to gifted people, the nature of giftedness, and gifted education in New Zealand.

As Gifted Kids, we will be taking on projects and coming up with ways to raise awareness about our ‘gifted’ education and abilities / differences.

Intellectual Giftedness

Intellectual giftedness is an ability higher than average. It is different from a skill; skills are learned or acquired behaviours. Intellectual giftedness is believed to be innate and it can be either general or specific. When combined with a challenging curriculum and the ability to acquire and execute skills, intellectual giftedness often produces academic success.

Myth One:

Intelligence is inherited and does not change. Gifted students, therefore, do not need any special services. Some things are inherited but not all therefore gifted kids do need special guidance to work up to their full potential.

Myths Two and Three:

Giftedness can be measured by tests. This is not true because some gifted kids get nervous in tests and do not work to their full potential. There is no need to identify gifted kids at early ages. This is false because giftedness needs to show itself from an early age.

Myth Four:

All gifted kids are nerds and have no friends. This is not true, because most gifted kids have a lot of friends, and some gifted kids are gifted at sports and others at academics.

Myth Five:

Gifted kids are model students and always get good marks and results from schoolwork. Some gifted kids are model students but not all, some can be troublemakers. Not all gifted kids get good marks in school, because gifted kids are gifted in different areas.

Myths Six and Seven:

Gifted kids don’t need any special guidance. Gifted kids are born gifted but without the right guidance they might not know or use their giftedness.

Gifted kids can easily tutor other kids. This isn’t always true because some gifted kids often get stressed when other children don’t learn as fast as them.

Myths Eight and Nine:

Gifted kids always work up to their full potential. This is not true, because some gifted kids are lazy, and do not work as well as they can. Teaching gifted students is easy. Some teachers think that teaching gifted kids is easy because they are naturally smart and do not need much help. This isn’t true because gifted kids need to be constantly challenged, and excel in different areas.
