The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Note from Father Craig Timmerman… You are beloved! Today we celebrate the Solemnity
of the Assumption of Mary, the 4th Glorious Mystery of the Rosary. What a joy to us, there is
both a man (Jesus) and a woman (Mary) Body and Soul in Heaven. All of the human race is
represented here – all masculinity and all femininity are redeemed!
I want to give an update on the progress of our Church committee discussing tabernacle,
statues, stations of the cross in St. Peter Church. We have now had 4 meetings together,
each 1 1/2 hours. Once we met with Fr. Aaron Johanneck, the director of the Office of
Worship for the Diocese of New Ulm. We hope to meet soon with a liturgical expert to create
a design and move forward. The most important guide we are using is a letter we received
from The Office of Worship back in 2017. Fr. Aaron told me he worked closely with Bishop LeVoir at the time
they wrote this letter. This letter was written at the time the Diocese asked us to change the way we were
bringing the Eucharist into the Church during Mass. We already made that change. However, the last
paragraph said this:
“This might also be a good time to begin a conversation about placing a tabernacle in the sanctuary of the
church. While the Church does speak of special chapels set aside for the reservation of the Blessed
Sacrament, this is recommended particularly for churches or shrines in which many funerals or weddings are
celebrated or in which there are frequently many visitors not so much to pray as to observe their ‘artistic or
historical treasures’ (cf. Eucharisticum Mysterium, 53). Additionally, these chapels are to be located close to
the sanctuary and clearly visible to the faithful (cf. GIRM, 315). In Sacramentum Caritatis, Pope Benedict XVI
directs that if these conditions for such a chapel are not possible, ‘it is preferable to locate the tabernacle in
the sanctuary, in a sufficiently elevated place, at the center of the apse area, or in another place where it
will be equally conspicuous’ (see #69).”
As you can see, the Office of Worship is pretty clear what they are asking us to consider at this time. I think it
is very important to point out that when we built our Church, the Office of Worship recommended we build it
the way we did and put the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel. So this is a change from that time to now.
Those who built this church did such an amazing job! It is well built and we are not saying they did something
‘wrong’. In fact, they were doing what the Diocese asked them to do! We have had 2 new Bishops since we
built our church and we continue to grow in understanding how to apply the Second Vatican Council. Our
committee has read the GIRM and other Church documents to help us decisions. These give instructions for
Mass that direct where to put the tabernacle, the importance of statues and images in the church (including
Stations of the Cross).
There are 2 basic important pieces we are seeing: 1) our church is a church. 2) This is a place where we
welcome the community for other events as well. I know #1 sounds obvious, but it is a good point. When we
welcome people here, we are welcoming them into a Catholic Church. So it’s okay for us to have Catholic
things in our church. They are still welcome for school events, concerts, etc. But the primary purpose of our
Church is a place for the People of God (the Church) gather to worship God.
As I mentioned in my homily a couple weeks ago, God’s presence here bonds us together. The Diocese has
said we should reserve the Blessed Sacrament both in our church body and also in our chapel, so people
have a place to pray during the day, when the church is locked for school security. Also, if we have an
event where the Blessed Sacrament would not be properly respeced (concert in the church or a visitation in
the chapel) we should remove the Blessed Sacrament from that tabernacle and place it in the other to
reserve it during this event. I am so grateful to our committee and their time and effort. They have really
entered into our discussions, even visiting other churches to see how they look. We hope to have a
schematic ready soon.
Lastly, Our Lady reminds us that she became the Mother of God by receiving the presence of Jesus into her
womb. Just so, we receive Him into us at every Eucharist. When we ‘eat his flesh and drink his blood we have
eternal life’ (John 6). Today, Mary was assumed into heaven to dwell there with God forever. What we do
here at Church leads us to live with God, the angels and saints forever in heaven. We are SO PROUD of our
Church - it is a physical place that makes this reality come alive in us!
Remember, You are beloved!

HOMILY
THE NICENE CREED
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of
heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I
believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten
Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God
from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the
Father; through him all things were made. For us
men and for our salvation he came down from
heaven, (At the words that follow, up to and
including ‘and became man’, all bow.) and by the
Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and
became man. For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day in accordance
with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come
again in glory to judge the living and the dead and
his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy
Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from
the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the
Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through
the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and
apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the
forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the
resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to
come. Amen.
