TRAInInG SEMInARSTwo separate classes offered from 8:00AM-9:00AM

8:00am-9:00am battery Maintenance and Monitoring: (California Room 4) Maximizing the lead Acid battery’s Reliability and

life in Standby Applications Presented by EnerSys The reliability of battery backup systems is critical

in maintaining the robustness of infrastructure. Telecommunications, UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply), and Utility sectors all rely on battery power backup systems to communicate, control, and power mission critical equipment. This presentation will identify and understand the importance of battery maintenance and monitoring, which can affect the lead acid battery’s reliability and life. It will also examine the pros and cons of alternate battery systems.

8:00am-9:00am new Revenue opportunities for Independent Carriers (Redwood Room) Presented by Fujitsu Network Communications With the on-going demand for bandwidth by consumers, new

opportunities are arising for independent carriers to boost revenue. One such application is for small cell front haul and backhaul. Small cells are inevitable as Mobile Carriers compete with each other to provide better coverage and capacity for LTE services, particularly in rural areas with poor or non-existent cellular coverage. These small cells need a reliable, high bandwidth network to haul their traffic to the Mobile Carrier’s network.

In addition, Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) services are

abounding. Ethernet is the dominant service for many independent carriers and the ability of carriers to deliver these Ethernet services with minimal expense yielding a maximum return is critically important to independent carriers. Further, teaming up with municipalities to provide broadband services to enterprise and residential customers to promote commerce is a new trend that independent carriers can explore. This talk discusses the above mentioned opportunities and how rural carriers can strengthen and grow their business.

TRAInInG SEMInAROne class offered at 9:15AM-10:15AM

9:15am-10:15am DAS – what Is It and How Can it Help You Generate (Redwood Room) More Revenue from Your Existing Fiber network? Presented by TE Connectivity This session is an introduction into the different types of

Distributed Antenna Systems and their benefits. The presenter will discuss in-building, outdoor, and Large Venue DAS, and how each of them can augment a Wireless Carrier’s network capacity. The presentation will also briefly cover the neutral hosting concept and how Telcos may participate in that space.

KEYnoTE opening Keynote Speaker: 10:30am-11:00am Steve Gleave, Senior vice president of Marketing, (California Room 4) MetaSwitch networks The Rise of the Software Telco J.B.S Haldane, the British geneticist, biologist and physiologist

has been quoted as saying that theories have 4 stages of acceptance: From “worthless nonsense” to “I always said so.” For network operators that have long ordered and deployed their control and application logic bundled tightly with proprietary hardware, the path to becoming software-centric can be viewed as more challenging than exciting. Conversely, over the top and “post carrier” operators have known no other way than to build their core communications services in the public cloud - cost-effectively generating new sources of revenue while obliterating legacy markets. Can traditional operators really adapt, and compete? Can a private or public cloud really host the brains of a real-time, programmable communications services? What will the software-centric architecture actually look like? And how soon will it be before traditional operators embrace this new network paradigm and utter the words “the software telco. I always said so.”

1:00pm-2:00pm Designing line power for FTTH networks(Redwood Room) Presented by Alpha Technologies Line power, or network power, offers a safe, highly reliable

alternative to local power for Fiber to the Home (FTTH) networks, and eliminates the cost and maintenance of batteries located at the customer’s premises. Line powered FTTH networks enable the service provider to re-use embedded copper cable and reap the many benefits of remotely powering the Optical Network Terminals. Though designing a line powered FTTH network requires an additional layer of planning and design for the OSP copper cable, the engineering process is straightforward. This seminar will provide an overview of line power, how it can be used to power FTTH networks, and the best practices for designing a line powered FTTH network.

TRAInInG SEMInARS Two separate classes offered from 2:15PM-3:15PM

2:15pm-3:15pm Disruption & Trust: Ingredients of Success for the (California Room 4) Communications Revolution Presented by MetaSwitch Networks Communication services are under attack. Skype alone has

a 78% market share for software VoIP, much of which is driven by users replacing their landlines with such apps. As a wireline service provider, you will need to take advantage of this transformation swiftly. Building on your relationship with the customer, using their phone number as the anchor for services and delivering services how and when they demand on Smartphones, PCs and Tablets, in a way that over the top/cloud UC providers cannot, will consolidate your position. Differentiating your service with both carrier grade quality and innovative new services and APIs ahead of OTT/Cloud UC providers will allow you to leapfrog your competition. Reimagining how services are stitched together and delivered, whether it is providing a branded client for messaging/collaboration with the ability to add voice/video or creating alternative pricing models will increase revenue both from your existing customer base as well as attracting new customers.

2:15pm-3:15pm Fiber Characterization(Redwood Room) Presented by S & S Solutions Fiber Characterization is paramount to ensure proper

network operation in today’s higher speed networks. This discussion will provide attendees who are interested in gaining an understanding of fiber optic network capabilities and technology with a detailed discussion of the ITU G.650.3 Fiber Characterization standard and the importance within your networks.
