Guest speaker is Mark Osborne, senior consultant for Core Education, who has worked with schools changing to MLE. He was Deputy Principal at Albany Senior High. We will talk about why things have changed in NZ education/ and the workplace because of technology and the knowledge now accessible to everybody, and what it means for learners today. 1974 Part 5 As I mentioned last week, New Zealand was pretty isolated in the mid-seventies compared with today. It went further than that, however. As classroom teachers we were comparatively isolated as well. In those days, we were required to provide reports that contained gradings on a 1 – 5 scale across a number of subjects. You may have been the recipient of such reports. Looking back I shudder at the lack of accuracy of this data. In essence, each classroom teacher was given an instruction to grade each student using the 1 – 5 scale (from memory 1 being the top 5% and 5 being the bottom 5%) with
a certain percentage of students needing to fill each level. Very little guidance was available to help the classroom teacher make these decisions and, as I have mentioned in earlier articles, there was often little reliable and valid student achievement data available to assist the teacher either. Each classroom teacher went about placing their students according to the Department of Education requirements and, for the most part, there was very little moderation amongst or between teachers across the school. I would describe it as being pretty much hit and miss and I would suggest I was responsible for quite a few misses. As an aside, if you were the recipient of a 1 way back then, you should consider the mark well warranted and if you received a 5 you could dismiss the result as being built on a falsehood! Today, not only as a country with the rest of the world, but within schools and, increasingly between and amongst schools, we are becoming more interconnected. Moderation of student achievement data is to the forefront of our professional endeavours. This helps to ensure that, through moderation, the achievement assessment of a student in one class would be the same in any other class of the same year level in the school. We are achieving this. The challenge now is to consistently achieve this across schools and this is not as easy as it might appear but it is well worth working towards as it improves our professional knowledge and practice.
(As an aside, this is why comparing national standards data amongst and between schools at present is pretty much a waste of time as ‘apples are seldom being compared with apples’ because of differing interpretations schools can make when assessing students.)
In terms of student achievement we have come a long way since 1974 and
we have some way to go.

Campbells Bay School Year 4, 5, and 6 students have had access to these competitions for the last 13 years, and many have enjoyed considerable success. The competitions offered are as follows:

Who should enter these competitions?
The competition is a chance to extend your child in subject areas they enjoy success in. They are open to students in Years 4, 5 and 6. We suggest that you avoid entering for subjects in which your child is still developing mastery. If your child enjoys a challenge, they will love this opportunity. If you are new to the competitions, we recommend that you visit the New South Wales University website for practice questions. Parents can purchase previous competition booklets from the same address: www.etc.unsw.edu.au. The New South Wales Competition also offers a writing competition which we have not offered before. I am looking to offer this next year if there is enough interest. This competition will cost more than double the others offered now, between $24 and $28 depending on how many entries we have. This year Campbells Bay School will be participating in the Shore to Shore Fun Run/Walk on Sunday 29 of March, at 9.00am. This year the Shore to Shore organisers are using a new bus. Because of our success last year they have challenged our school and community to do better.
We have prizes for the top classes this year. The three classes with the highest percentage of entries with receive sports equipment vouchers for the class to spend. This will be gear the class can use at morning tea, lunch, golden time etc.
The are two entry fees, the $7 fee is for participation in the Fun Run/Walk and the $12 fee also includes a timer for the competitive runners or those who like to keep their time. Also bus tokens are available on registration $3 each. We will still be having a sausage sizzle, however, due to new online registrations it will be pay when you arrive at the finish line. More details closer to the event.
This year all entries are made online at www.shoretoshore.co.nz. This includes entry and bus tokens. Please make sure you register with Campbells Bay School team to be included in our end result. Teachers having fun! Our teaching staff recently took part after school in a session of professional development on teaching PE. They had heaps of fun learning skills to pass onto the children.
Put the Boot In
Former students of the school have come up with a great idea to help those less fortunate than many children who attend CBS. 'Put the Boot In' ask that any spare sporting boots are sent to school for distribution to less fortunate children. Boots in clean and usable condition are most welcome. Just send them to the office at school. Thank you to our former students who are acting in the best traditions of: ‘Not Self But Service’.

Cricket
Super 8s Primary Schools Cricket Tournament
Last week CBS sent five teams to Takapuna Cricket Club to compete against other local schools in a format which involves all players batting and bowling. Our players all did themselves and the school proud, showing improvement in their skills over the day and displaying good sportsmanship. Most of our girls were new to cricket, but showed that they could learn quickly, winning three of their games and losing two very closely, placing them second equal overall. The Year 5 team was impressive, also placing second, and well done to Toby Douglas who was named Player of the Day. On Thursday we entered two Year 3 and 4 teams who greatly enjoyed their experience and congratulations to Oliver Dixon who was named Player of the Day. The Year 6 team played on Friday in rather soggy conditions, but still managed to display some great cricket only losing to a strong Willow Park team. Thank you to our coaches and all the parents who helped with transport and came to support the players. More photos can be viewed on our google site—sports—cricket.
Former CBS student Sam Brotherton has been selected to be part of the recently named All Whites squad to play Korea Republic on 31 March. The squad will have seven days training together in Seoul before the game which the coach, Anthony Hudson, sees as vital time to see if his new recruits are up to the standard. Sam says he is "buzzing, a dream come true". Hudson said that he is one of the players identified not just for ability and performances but also in terms of strength of character.

NZ Police Training From Monday 16 March to Friday 20 March the NZ Police will be conducting training exercises at 46 Aberdeen Rd Campbells Bay. This training will take place between 9am—5pm. The training will include the use of demolitions and loud noises may be heard. At times you may see members of the NZ Police carrying firearms.
