Catapult Plus Program Expectations

Congratulations!! You’ve worked hard to become a better leader and make your community a better place … and we want to hear all about it!

The ‘Catapult Plus’ program has been developed to foster the lessons learned at camp and to keep motivating

you to be your best. This means that Catapult is here to work with you throughout high school to help keep

you on track to reaching your full potential. We’re very excited to offer a new summer conference for you to

reunite with your own Catapult group while meeting new Catapult friends as we help build upon your

leadership talents.

In exchange, we’ve asked for some work from you. But this

work isn’t for us, the projects are designed to benefit YOU!

Through doing this work, you’ll find yourself on a path to

self-discovery and you’ll be rewarded by becoming an even

better leader, making good choices and be well on your

way to reaching your dreams!

All participants will be required to demonstrate leadership

initiatives by:

o Leading a service project during the school year

o Being involved in extra-curricular activities

o Setting personal goals each year

o Demonstrating a commitment to life-long learning

Detailed guidelines and assistance in all of the above areas are provided for you in this booklet. And - we’re

always available to help! Catapult Plus is all about learning by doing. Projects won’t be marked as a pass/fail.

However – if you don’t do your part to honour the commitment you made by signing our Catapult Plus contract,

then we may choose to release you from the program. Extenuating circumstances will always be considered of

course.

The whole reason for creating the new Catapult Plus program is because we believe in you and we want to do

everything we can to help you create the best possible future for yourself. The activities are designed to help

you grow as a person and most of you are already active and meeting this commitment. But - we recognize

that life can throw curveballs at us that make participation in school clubs or sports teams almost impossible.

If you find yourself in this situation, then we will help in any way we can. As long as you are trying your best ...

and you demonstrate your commitment to the Catapult principals of effort and honesty ... then we will look at

your situation and make whatever concessions are needed to help you move forward.

We look forward to staying in touch during the year and seeing you again at the conference!

All the best,

CATAPULT LEADERSHIP SOCIETY

1: Community Service Project

It was through the generosity of our sponsors that you were able to attend Catapult camp free of charge. It is also through their generosity that we can offer you the Catapult Plus program free of charge. These programs have a combined value of $5,000 per student!! The only thing our sponsors ask of you in return – is to use your Catapult experience to act as a leader and help enrich your community.

A community project is a commitment to recognize and assist the needs of others without pay. By participating in a community project, you will learn about leadership as well as the value of human kindness and the rewards it brings to both the individual and the community.

It’s entirely up to you what you’d like to do ... and whether you want to act alone, recruit some friends to help, or team up with other Catapulters. The more people involved though – the more we expect from you! We’ve included a list of suggestions for you below. It can be as simple as organizing a clean-up day of your neighbourhood playground to creating a new club that will meet regularly to achieve a desired outcome.

Don’t worry about whether your project will be a huge success or not. It’s about recognizing a need, taking a risk by reaching out to make a difference, and learning by doing. No marks will be assigned but prizes may be awarded at the summer conference!

Many of you are already leading projects that will qualify for this program requirement. If you are unsure – just ask us! NOTE FOR 2013 – An Optional Alternative!! Because this year is half over already, we realize that time may pose a constraint to planning and executing a community project between now and June. Therefore, for 2013 you may choose to commit to community volunteer hours instead. Should you choose this option for this year – you will still be expected to plan a project for NEXT year and present your plan at the summer conference. Optional Volunteer Hours Commitment:

o you will be required to perform a total of 5 hours of volunteer service by June 30, 2013 o you can volunteer at more than one organization if you choose o volunteer hours must be confirmed by someone at the organization o existing volunteer commitments WILL qualify

If you choose this option – see the guidelines on Page 18. The following “Project” pages will be information only for now. But you should read through them before making your final decision. And - these pages will come in handy when it’s time to prepare your conference presentation!

1: Community Service Project

The Basic Steps

Step 1: Select your project – Your project will be more rewarding to everyone involved if you focus on something you’re passionate about, so be sure to pick something that interests you. It must be something that you actually plan and carry out – simply volunteering at a charity and following a supervisor’s instructions is not considered a project. Step 2: Consider whether you need a project advisor – if your idea is complex, you may need a project advisor (an adult in your community who is willing to share his/her expertise to provide guidance). If you’re unsure if you need one, or can’t recruit an advisor for yourself, then let us know and we’ll help. Step 3: Complete your ‘Strategic Plan’ (page 9) and submit it to us for advance approval - Approval will be

granted based on the following criteria: (1) your strategic plan has been submitted in acceptable fashion, (2) the proposed project is in-line with our goal of giving back to the community, (3) the project has a good chance of success and (4) genuine effort has been demonstrated. Submit Part A by February 20, 2013. We will review your general concept and get back to you within one week. If your general concept, has been approved you can move to Part B which is due March 7, 2013.

Step 4: Execution – Once you receive approval, you can start and complete your project whenever you like, as long as its before June. It will be important for you to keep notes during all stages of planning and executing your project so you can report your results to us. You can use the template on pages 11-14 to help you! Step 5: Submit your final project summary to CATAPULT (pages 15 &16)

Step 6: Prepare a 5-minute oral presentation – You’ll need to prepare it prior to arrival at the summer conference. Step 7: Present your Community Service Project to an audience of your peers at the Summer Conference The objective is to share ideas and experiences so that we can all learn from each other. It’s also an opportunity to practice your public speaking skills!!

Here are some ideas to get you started but feel free to come up with your own:

Schools – take on a leading role on a major student council project or student committee, create a SMILE Club for disabled students, or create a new club for your school or your old junior high

Sports - coach for your favourite sport, or create a children’s group to play sport-type activities, organize a sports lunch group at an elementary school

Seniors homes – plan a craft day, or arrange an entertainment visit

Conservation projects – organize a recycle depot drive or create a clean-up project

Churches – become a Sunday school teacher, or create a youth group to help the church community

Neighbourhood – organize a crew to help shovel driveways for the elderly or infirm, or a program to help them with their groceries.

Local charities – organize a bottle drive or other fund-raising event for one of your favourite charities

Use your social media savvy to create an awareness campaign for your favourite charity or social issue

The Idea – Part A

NAME:_____________________________________________________________________ SCHOOL:_____________________________________________________________________

Note: Your project is about your own personal growth. It can be large or small – you decide. It is meant to help you do something that challenges you to grow as a leader. It is not a competition so choose something you know will challenge you that helps someone/something that is meaningful to you. A large project could make a big difference in your community or a small project could make a big difference to you based on the challenges you may have to face at home, school, and/or work. Be brave…be bold…and have fun!

Other Catapulters who will be involved in this project: (*Every Catapult Plus participant is expected to submit this report regardless if it was a joint project with other Catapulters)

* Note – these questions were developed to help you think through your planning requirements in detail. You may find several questions will not apply to you, depending on the size and scope of your project.

Critical success factors:

2 What do you think is the most important thing to ensure your success? (eg. the event requires a sunny day)

2.1 What steps will you take to maximize your chances of ensuring this success factor?

2.2 What do you think is your biggest threat that could interfere with a successful outcome? (The secret is to realistically try to identify issues that might come up so you can devise ways of avoiding them, or if that's not possible, dealing with them in ways that cause minimal disruption.)

2.3 How will you proactively plan to minimize this threat?

Location:

3 Where will your project take place?

3.1 Do you require any special permission to use your planned location? If so, provide details.

If there is to be more than one Catapult Leader, tell us how you will share the responsibilities.

5.1 Will you be looking for other people to help you?

5.2 If yes to 5.1, how many volunteers do you think you will need to recruit and what will they do? eg.

- 3 cookie bakers - 2 sellers - 1 promotions person

5.3 Who do you plan to recruit? (ie. other catapulters, other students at your school, members of your church …)

9 Do you think your project is complex enough that you may need an Advisor?

9.1 If yes, do you have someone in mind? Please tell us who and why you picked that person. (if no, do you want us to help you find one?)

9.2 Have you asked that person, and did they agree?

9.3 Have you reviewed your strategic plan with this person?

1: Community Service Project

Oral Presentation

Everyone attending the summer conference will be required to make a presentation about his/her community service project whether you completed one or you opted to perform volunteer hours instead. Oral presentations should last between 5 and 10 minutes depending on the size and scope of the project.

If you completed a COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT, the most important topics for you to cover are:

- a brief description of your project - why you selected this project - who was involved other than yourself (if anyone) - what worked well and what you would do differently - your assessment of the overall success of the project - what you learned as a leader from this experience This could be a lot of information to cover and you may not have time to cover everything in 5-10 minutes. Choose what you feel is most important to share with the group so that they can learn from your experience. This is also why it is so important to plan your presentation in advance of arriving at the conference, and practice it (with a timer). If you require more than 10 minutes, or if you are planning to present with another Catapulter who you shared the project with, please let us know in advance.

If you completed VOLUNTEER SERVICE INSTEAD, the most important topics for you to cover are:

- a brief description of your proposed project - how it will benefit your community - why you selected this project - if it will require other people to help you - what you think will be your biggest challenge You should present on an idea that you think you may want to do next year. You can always change your mind – especially after hearing the other Catapulters’ ideas at the conference! Your presentation should last no longer than 5 minutes. It is very important to plan your presentation in advance of arriving at the conference, and practice it (with a timer). If you require more than 5 minutes, please let us know in advance. Note – our Strategic Plan template may help you as you plan your proposed project. GUIDELINES

- You should practice your presentation OUT LOUD. Several times. - You may bring in your notes to help guide you through your presentations (Alternatively, you can bring

“cheat sheets” - recipe cards with brief notes) - Presentations may be accompanied by visual aids such as pictures, videos, diagrams, and/or handouts.

Use of technology will require advance notification so we can have it ready for you. - When it’s your turn – if you are nervous, try taking several deep, slow breaths. It will calm you down.

(But you shouldn’t be nervous – it’s just us Catapulters ready to cheer you on!)

- We’ll be learning about public speaking at the conference, so this is a great opportunity to practice your skills!

1B - Volunteer Hours (optional alternative to service project)

FOR 2013 ONLY: Because Catapult Plus was not offered to you until midway through this school year, you may opt to perform volunteer service instead of completing a community service project. If you are already volunteering in your community, all you’ll need to do is fill out these forms!!!! Please note - you will still be expected to plan a project for NEXT year and present your idea at the summer conference. Here’s what you’ll need to do if you choose this option:

You will be required to perform a total of 5 hours of volunteer service by June 30, 2013

You can volunteer at more than one organization if you choose

Volunteer hours must be confirmed by someone at the organization

Participation in school clubs and teams will not qualify; however, volunteering to help a teacher with a special project or organizing a team fundraiser will qualify. If you’re unsure, ask us!

Please complete the attached report and return to us by June 30, 2013

Remember to consider and/or complete the strategic plan to help you plan your project presentation at the summer conference

2: Extracurricular Participation

Catapult’s objective is to build strong leaders for schools and communities across Nova Scotia. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that we want you to get involved. It is through these experiences that you will develop your confidence and pave the road for a rich life of experiences. Your extracurricular involvement also helps to build a solid resume that will help when you wish to apply for a job or to university. Most of you are involved already – which is how your grade 9 teacher saw your abilities and nominated you for Catapult. So for most of you, this component will not require anything further from you. Except – we’ll ask you to complete our simple end-of-year report to tell us what you became involved in.

You can be involved in any of a variety of organizations/groups. Such as:

student council

school advisory groups

sports teams

school clubs

community groups

volunteering for local charities

NSSSA

Junior Achievement

Duke of Edinburgh

4H Club

church groups

cultural groups

peer mentoring

CAN’T FIND A CLUB TO JOIN?? We recognize that it is not always possible to join school groups that require nomination or a specific skill set. If you find you are not able to get involved in your school’s government, clubs or teams and do not plan to participate in any other activities, we’ve come up with an alternative project for you. You can choose to participate in “The Good Experiment”. Studies show that when you do something nice for someone, it gives you a natural high that can last for weeks, even months. A

group asked five Canadians to do one good deed every day for 7 days, just to see how it made them feel. They documented their experiences on their webcams and you can too! Following their lead, if you choose this as your extracurricular participation, we propose that you conduct a good deed every day for 7 days and document your experiment (written, oral or video) and send it to us. You can visit their website for ideas: http://www.peopleforgood.ca/. Catapult will not post your video on the website unless you would like us to … and you are not obligated to join the movement or their Facebook page. You may want to try this experiment even if you are involved in other groups.

3: Setting Personal Goals Setting goals is a healthy, positive habit no matter what stage of life you are in. This worksheet is a great place to start thinking proactively about your life and the things you’d like to accomplish this year.

The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don't define them, or ever seriously

consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan

to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.” -- Denis Watley

INSTRUCTIONS

- Choose at least THREE goals you would like to proactively work towards this school year. Attached is a long list of ideas for you to consider. Read them but think creatively - you are not limited to these ideas! Once you’ve decided on at least 3 goals for yourself, then complete the “Goal Plan” on Page 23.

- When you are finished, hang your Goal Plan on your closet door, mirror or other prominent place where you’ll see them every day and remind yourself of your plan.

- At the end of the year, review your Goal Plan and assess for yourself which goals you achieved, which

need more work, which need modification, etc.

- Finally, answer a few general questions for us about the process. We won’t assess you on your choice of

goals or whether or not you achieved them – but we’ll want to be assured that you’re taking the goal

setting concept seriously.

HELPFUL HINTS

- Remember what Mr. Phil told you – writing your goals down on paper significantly increases your chances of achieving them.

- Your goals should be something you genuinely wish to achieve and is within your personal power to achieve.

- Think long term AND short term! Where you want to be in 10 years may mean you need to set some goals today (ie if you want to be a Doctor, then you need to set goals NOW to get high grades.)

- Goals are flexible; as you work towards one you may discover you don’t want it after all. Or a better idea may come up midway. That’s okay. It’s your plan... and you can make changes to it.

- It’s not just about coming up with some goals – it’s that extra step of thinking clearly about the actions you need to take in order to maximize your chances of reaching those goals.

- When thinking about your goal, be SMART :

Specific - who/what/when/where/why

Measurable – how will you verify achievement?

Attainable – be realistic!

Relevant – they should enrich your life!

Time-bound – focus on goals you can achieve between now and June.

Remember that you are the guide to your own life - take control and enjoy it!

4: Commitment to Life-Long Learning

Any successful leader understands the need for lifelong learning. Your education is important to your future – and the more you have, the more doors will open for you. The more importance you place on your education, the more effort you will put into it … and this can translate into scholarships. But we realize that not all of you are high academic achievers or university may not be a goal for you. And that’s okay. But whether you pursue formal post-secondary education or not – your education will not cease the moment you leave high school. Education is all around you…at school, work, internet, newspapers, radio, family & friends, coaches and team leaders. Staying open to learning new lessons throughout your life is so important because lifelong learning is key to lifelong success.

You can learn through a variety of skills. For example:

Increase a class grade on a test or assignment

Increase your GPA

Take an additional credit

Learn how to play an instrument

Learn how to sew or knit

Learn a new sport

Learn a new language

Learn how to drive

So what will you need to do for the Catapult Plus program? Demonstrate to us, in a written paragraph or two at the end of the school year, what you did that shows us you are committed to your life-long learning. Some of you may be focused on getting top grades, you may be focused on getting a passing grade, you may be focused on learning to play the guitar. Your commitment to education will be different for each of you and we want to hear what you're doing towards your lifelong learning experience this year.
