Support Group for Families of Incarcerated Persons The Diocese of San Jose, through the Office of Restorative Justice, has formed a support group for family members of incarcerated persons. This group meets at 7:00pm on the third Tues-day of each month at the Women’s Gathering Place (First Presbyterian Church) 49 North 4th Street, San Jose 95112. The purpose of this group is to provide support, encouragement, and prayer during this difficult time.

For further information, please contact Merylee Shelton at [email protected] or at (408) 218-1928 (call or text).

Sacred Linen Ministry The distinctive linens - called purificators – that we use at each Eucharistic celebration are the responsibility of a minis-terial team of Cathedral parishioners who wash them at home for our community. We are very grateful for their dedica-tion. If you would like to participate, we invite you to call the parish office. We will put you in touch with Fr. Jeff who will talk to you more about it and provide the proper instruc-tions. Thank you.

Happy Thanksgiving! This week I want to thank everyone that helps with our liturgies. Starting with our priests Fr. Joseph, Fr. Jeff and Fr. Hector. Their strong leadership and faith are a great gift to this community. There is a lot of necessary time on their part stud-ying and preparing their homilies each week. We also want to thank Deacon Greg Ortiz for his work here with Baptisms, funeral vigils, being present at liturgies and preparing homilies when needed. Greg has a full time job and a family in addition to his ministry here. The following is a list of the other groups of people that help with the Masses each week: Mass Coordinators Lectors Eucharistic Ministers Sacristans Altar Servers Julie Wind, the choir and the instrumentalists Ushers and Sextons The Altar cloth group that washes, irons and prepares them for Mass each week. Environment volunteers Jim Del Biaggio and his staff in the gift shop that keeps us supplied with candles, wine, incense and many other supplies that we need for liturgy. The two groups of collection counters that come every other week. This community relies on everyone. Thank you for the many gifts that we receive around the table and we continue to count our bless-ings. Tanis Zuccaro

Discover the keys to the mystery of love and relation-ships! The Dominican cloistered nuns of Corpus Christi Monastery and guest Jim Brady will unravel this mystery

in a five-session series based on the groundbreaking “Love and Responsibility” by Karol Wojtyla (Saint John Paul II). Some of the issues to be addressed include: What makes a true friendship? How does attraction lead to either selfless love or a relationship in which someone is being used? How do I know if I am in a relationship of authentic love or just another relationship doomed to failure? If eve-ryone is made for spousal love, how is this desire recon-ciled with vocations to the priesthood, religious life or ded-icated singlehood? …and more! Each second Saturday from 9:15-11:30 a.m. (Mass available at 8 a.m.) September 9, 2017 | October, 14, 2017 | November 11, 2017 | December 9, 2017 | January 13, 2018 Cost: $45 (includes books, materials) Corpus Christi Monastery | 215 Oak Grove Avenue | Menlo Park, California For more information or to register, please visit www.nunsmenlo.org or contact Sister Joseph Marie, O.P. at [email protected].

S aint of the Week Saint Agnes of Assisi (c. 1197 – November 16, 1253 Born Caterina Offreducia, Agnes was the younger

sister of Saint Clare, and her first follower. When Caterina left home two weeks after Clare’s departure, their family attempted to bring her back by force. They tried to drag her out of the monastery, but her body suddenly became so heavy that several knights could not budge it. Her uncle Monaldo tried to strike both of them but was temporarily paralyzed. The knights then left Caterina and Clare in peace. Saint Francis of Assisi himself gave Clare’s sister the name Agnes, because she was gentle like a young lamb. Agnes matched her sister in devotion to prayer and in will-ingness to endure the strict penances that characterized the Poor Ladies’ lives at San Damiano. In 1221, a group of Benedictine nuns in Monticelli near Florence asked to become Poor Ladies. Saint Clare sent Agnes to become abbess of that monastery. Agnes soon wrote a rather sad letter about how much she missed Clare and the other nuns at San Damiano. After establishing other monasteries of Poor Ladies in northern Italy, Agnes was recalled to San Damiano in 1253, as Clare lay dying. Three months later Agnes followed Clare in death and was canonized in 1753. Her human remains, along with her sis-ter Clare, were interred in the basilica of Saint Clare in As-sisi. Reflection God must love irony; the world is so full of it. In 1212, many in Assisi surely felt that Clare and Agnes were wast-ing their lives and turning their backs on the world. In reali-ty, their lives were tremendously life-giving, and the world has been enriched by the example of these poor contempla-tives.

This week’s Gospel speaks of how Jesus’ disciples are to conduct themselves as they await the King-dom of Heaven. In the preceding passages and in last week’s Gos-pel, Jesus taught that there is no

way to predict the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven. His disciples must, therefore, remain vigi-lant and ready to receive the Son of Man at any time. Jesus’ parable talks about Christian disciple-ship using economic metaphors. Before he leaves on a journey, the master entrusts to his servants a different number of talents, giving to each accord-ing to their abilities. A talent is a coin of great val-ue. Upon the master’s return, he finds that the first and second servants have doubled their money, and both are rewarded. The third servant, however, has only preserved what was given to him because he was afraid to lose the money. He has risked nothing; he did not even deposit the money in a bank to earn interest. This servant is punished by the master, and his talent is given to the one who brought the greatest return. Read in light of last week’s parable of the wise and foolish brides-maids, this parable teaches that God’s judgment will be based on the service we render to God and to one another in accordance with the gifts that God has given to us. Our gifts, or talents, are given to us for the service of others. If we fail to use these gifts, God’s judgment on us will be severe. On the other hand, if we make use of these gifts in service to the Kingdom of Heaven, we will be re-warded and entrusted with even more responsibili-ties. This Gospel reminds us that Christian spiritu-ality is not passive or inactive. Our life of prayer helps us to discern the gifts that have been given to us by God. This prayer and discernment ought to lead us to use our gifts in the service of God and our neighbor. God’s grace allows us to share in the work of serving the Kingdom of Heaven. - Loyola Press
